Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution. The results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What other changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • Mac Pro slow down after Yosemite 10.10.2 upgrade

    Upgraded in January.
I get the spinning color wheel all the time.  Programs crash.
I've run adware medic a few times, and etrecheck.
First run through, adware found Genio.
Since then, it hasn't.  Etrecheck still says it sees it, but Adware doesn't. Still no good.
    I reset SMS and PRAM.
This machine is slow. Previous to the upgrade, this machine was very fast!

  • Bluetooth keyboard and Word 2008 for Mac after Yosemite

Bluetooth keyboard (apple) on 27 " iMac (mid 2010) won't work in Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac after Yosemite. It is paired and recognized and works normally otherwise.  Mouse works fine, too.

Follow up: After trying a number of different approaches I finally shut off the iMac and let it stay off for several minutes and then restarted it. This is something I had read that another user had tried and had worked for him. To my surprise, the keyboard now works in Word 2008. I have no idea if this will continue to work, or if it might work for any of you, but I would give it a try.
    Process:
    Shut Down your Mac
Let it stay off for several minutes
Power up and check to see if your bluetooth keyboard works in Word 2008.
    Good luck!

  • Why can't I log into my mac after yosemite

I had to restart my mac after it froze. It does this a lot since I downloaded Yosemite. When I restarted there were two accounts mine and a guest user. I enter my password and it says it can not log into my account at this time because of an error. ***!! My password is correct I know it is what the **** is going on and can anyone help me fix it please?

You're using the "legacy" (pre-Lion) version of FileVault, and the disk image file on which your home folder is stored is corrupt.
This condition is quite difficult and time-consuming to recover from. If the procedure suggested here is too hard, get help from someone more experienced. One option is to make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store. Legacy FileVault is obsolete and should not be used under OS X 10.7 or later.
If you have another user account with administrator status and can do so, log in to it and skip to Step 4.
    Step 1
Start up in Recovery mode. The OS X Utilities screen will appear.
    Step 2
    Select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Select your startup volume if not already selected. Pull down the menu labeled Select the user account and select
              System Administrator (root)
Follow the prompts to set a password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
    Step 3
At the login screen, click Other... Enter "root" (without the quotes) in the Name field, and enter the password you set in Step 4 in the Password field. You should now be logged in. Do nothing while logged in as root except as indicated below.
Open the Users & Groups preference pane. Create a new user and check the box marked
Allow user to administer this computer
Restart and log in as the new user.
    Step 4
Load this web page in Safari.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
sudo dscl . -delete users/fubar HomeDirectory
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the TextEdit application. Paste into the window by pressing command-V. Substitute the short name of the affected FileVault user for the word "fubar".
Triple-click the edited line and again copy to the Clipboard.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window. When prompted, enter the password of the user you're logged in as. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return.
    Step 5
You should now be able to log out and log in as the FileVault user. Your files still won't be available. FileVault is inactive.
Locate the disk image file named "fubar.sparsebundle" or "fubar.sparseimage" at the top level of your home folder. Again, substitute the short user name for "fubar".
    Step 6
Try to open the file. If it won't open, try to repair it in Disk Utility. If it still won't open, restore it from your most recent backup. Keep trying older backups until you find one that works. If you don't have a backup, the data is lost, perhaps beyond any hope of recovery. There's a slight chance that you might be able to repair the disk image using an expensive third-party application called "Disk Warrior." If possible, go to a "Genius Bar" where the software is available for use by the "Geniuses" at no charge.
    Step 7
Copy the files from the mounted disk image to the corresponding subfolders of your home folder. The Library folder is invisible in the Finder. Open it by holding down the option key and selecting
              Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Open the copy on the disk image by selecting
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
    and entering
    /Volumes/fubar/Library
in the text box that opens. Again, substitute the correct name for "fubar".
Log out and log back in.
If there isn't enough disk space available to complete this step, unmount the disk image, copy the disk image file to an external storage device, delete the original, and try again.
    Step 8
Back up all data, then delete the disk image file.
    Step 9
Delete the user you created in Step 3, if applicable.
    Step 10 (optional, but recommended)
Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading "Disable the root user."

  • Another slow mac after Mavericks...

Hi, I know I need more memory for sure, but could you please advise whether that will most likely fix my slow mac based on my EtreCheck? My concern is investing in old laptop if that will not solve and I should better off think of a brand new. Thanks in advance for your help. Cheers!

I am having problems with slowness, too - ever since installing the latest Yosemite update I downloaded a few days ago.  EVERYTHING - Safari, QuickTime, MS Word for Apple, the DVD Player, everything - runs slowly and I get the "rainbow pinwheel of frustration".  It's taken me three minutes to type these few sentences.  It's really starting to frustrate me.  Here is my EtreCheck report:
    Problem description:
Since I installed the latest Yosemite update (10.10.2), EVERYTHING runs slowly.  I get the rainbow pinwheel whenever I click on anything on Safari, and have trouble typing via Safari; videos stop and start on QuickTime; MS Word for Apple runs slowly - EVERYTHING seems to be slowed down.  It took four minutes to get the above sentences typed.  Please help me escape the “rainbow pinwheel of failure”!

  • Slow moving Mac after Yosemite

I have a Macbook pro mid 2009.  I loved this computer until I downloaded Yosemite.  Now it is very slow.  It also gets extremely hot to the touch on the bottom of my computer after just a few mins of running it.  I’m close to throwing in the towel and getting a PC.    Please Help!

You're running in the absolute bare minimum ram to run just the OS, anything you try to do on top of that will slow your mac to a crawl. Take a look at OWC for upgrade options http://eshop.macsales.com

  • Slow MBP after Yosemite install and other concerns

    Hi
There are a few discussions on this topic, they did not help due to the fact that I have no clue what to do or if I even have a problem.
    The problem:
My MBP is slower after I installed Yosemite, sometimes the wheel of death pops up and freezes what I am busy with in Safari. Apps take longer to open than usual.
I have added EtreCheck results from this morning.
    Please give advice on:
    How to improve the speed.
Whether there is there something in the results that I should be concerned about.
    Hardware that should be updated.
Should I get an app to delete or prevent unnecessary files (from apps?) from being saved without my knowledge.
    Thanks

    Hi epwebb,
The good news is that you have a good MBP. It seems to be hugged by that google crapware that you have on your Mac. They spy on you, use the bandwidth that you pay for and hugging your Mac obviously at your cost.
Your Mac should be motoring. Look here and here to get the Mac to perform as it should
    Have fun

  • Apple TV won't wake up mac after Yosemite update

    Hi all,
Yesterday, I upgraded to Yosemite and to iTunes 12.0.1.26. I have a mac mini (late 2012), an Airport Extreme Time Capsule (latest model), and an Apple TV 3 (A1469). I upgraded my Apple TV to the latest software version when iOS 8 came out.
When my computer was running Mavericks, Apple TV would see my library even when my computer was asleep, and would wake it up. After upgrading to Yosemite and the new iTunes, after my computer and the Apple TV go to sleep, the Apple TV can no longer wake up my mac. Sometimes it will remember it has seen the library and simply would not connect. Other times, it would just ask me to turn on home sharing on my computer... When my mac is awake, home sharing works fine.
This is a very annoying problem, and I suspect it is related to iTunes, and not to my Apple TV. I should mention that my iPad and iPhone are experiencing the same -- they see the shared library when the mac is awake, and do not see it when it is asleep.
I have tried to turn off home sharing on all my devices, to wait, and to turn it on again. I tried resetting the PRAM on my mac. I reinstalled the Apple TV software. I restarted all my devices. Nothing worked.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Do you have a solution, or is this a bug (that will hopefully be fixed soon).
    Thanks!

    Hi Boaz,
I´m facing exactly the same with my Mini which is remotely controlled by a MacBook via Screensharing. Everything works fine unless the Mini goes to sleep. After that I´m not able to wake it up by the MacBook and Wake on LAN (Wol). Even the share is not listed in Finder´s sidebar anymore. It simply doesn´t show up in the share sections anymore. When I log on to my router I can see, that MacMini is not active and I can send WoL package from the router. That brings the Mini back alive, although it still doesn´t show up in the Finder sidebar. When I connect to the Mini via Finder "Connect to share" and type in: vnc://ip-MacMini I can use screensharing again.......
Also I faced the problem with indexed network phantoms....means my Mini was listed in network shares with several different indices e.g. MacMini(2) and (4) and so on..... I wasn´t able to connect and curiously these phantoms show up even when my Mini was shut off! Looks like bonjour or something else is not working properly....
I fixed phantoms by reseting my router (AVM firtzbox), which worked out perfect since yesterday and no indexed phantom is showing up anymore.....
Haven´t fixed the screensharing or waking up thing yet....
I was also taking part in beta testing program and reported these problems to Apple. In Mavericks everything worked really perfect!

You need more ram. But has it really been 3 months since you rebooted this computer? Restart it once in awhile and some of that slowness might go away.

  • Another slow Mac after installing Mavericks

    Hi,
I've been using Mavericks for some time now, but it is painfully slow, particularly when using Adobe software and OpenOffice.
I have read a few tips here but reached my limit on what I can do to solve it. I have uninstalled previous Adobe software, Font Explorer and other bits and pieces, but I am afraid to clean up further lest I delete something important... I have run Etrecheck and fixed a few things, but there are still a few red lines there. I have posted the results below. Any tips will be appreciated!

  • Slow mac after importing photo library

Hi, I have a macbook pro 2,9ghz intel core i7, 8gb ram, 1 tb harddrive (219gb free). I recently imported my old photo library, wich is quite big and now it seems my mac is slowing down... The library was kind of messy and i had some trouble organizing it so i ran the duplicator anhiliator and it found 35 GB of duplicates wich is now in the iphoto dustbin. Howver - iphoto is riunning very slow - I wonder if it is something in the way the photos are imported - the change in speed certainly happened after the import... It was previously a Picasa photo library - dont know if that matters? Does anyone now how to handle this?
    Thanks, Fritz

I'll try the wired connection tonight - I do have other devices that access photos/mp3's over my wireless network (eg. xbox360) that seem to have no difficulty with speed.
Do you think it would make any difference if I imported in smaller groups (maybe one folder/50 photos at a time) rather than trying to import my entire photo album at once (3000 photos). It might take a few days, but it is a process I could run in the background while I surf. Just curious if iPhoto cares - does it take the same amount of time to import 50 photos 20 times, versus 1000 photos in one shot...?
    thanks for the advice

  • Extensions Load Slow (Mac) After Latest Photoshop Update

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the below:
(On Mac - Mavericks) The latest Photoshop CC 2014 update has slowed down the loading of my two extension (these are extensions I have created in HTML5). Prior to the update they loaded fine. Also, when I uninstalled one of the extensions and then reinstall it I get error code -180 (no documentation on this error code), I click ok and then open Photoshop and the extension loads (but slow) and when I quit Extension Manger and reopen it the extension shows it is loaded.
No problems with the extension in Windows 7 after the Photoshop update. The extensions load as before the update.
Also, error code -180 is a mystery. I have searched the web and can find no reference to it. Any idea where Adobe lists their error codes?
Any insights on this issue will be appreciated - Sam
PS - When one of my extension pallets displays a blank window, I click in the pallet and the extension loads. Strange!

Please post your problem to Photoshop General Discussion so that it can reach more people and get better support.

That's not a Power Mac, it's a Mac Pro; completely different archtecture and Power Mac can't run beyond 10.5.8.
We'll have this moved to the proper forum.

    Hi epwebb,
The good news is that you have a good MBP. It seems to be hugged by that google crapware that you have on your Mac. They spy on you, use the bandwidth that you pay for and hugging your Mac obviously at your cost.
