Slow mac book. can anyone help?

my partner deleted iphoto. to try to reload it i put in my startup disks and tried to run them. now everything on my computer is running slowly, applications won't quit, its all gone wrong. what have i done? what can i do?

Have you tried force quiting?
Using a lot of the iLife applications can slow down your computer. Check to see how much cpu programs are using in activity monitor.

Just to directly answer a few questions...
...if you use Safari, Apple's built-in browser, you can create a bookmark by holding down the command and D keys at the same time. I don't use Safari that much - I prefer Firefox mainly for the fact that there's a plug-in or extension for most anything you can imagine.
There are two ways to transfer photos from your camera to your Mac - you can either use a USB cord (if your camera came with one) and plug it into a USB port and transfer photos or you can use the SD card socket on the left hand side of your MacBook Pro and take the SD card out of your camera and transfer your photos to your Mac.
You have to purchase, if you haven't already, Microsoft's Office for Mac to work with Word. Office 2010 on Windows and Office 2011 for Macs are very similar so if you're familiar with the Windows side you'll have no problems.

Most YouTube content requires the Flash plugin.
Uninstall your current copy of the plugin, then reinstall new > Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Make sure you uninstall the old plugin first.
When you are done, if you are using Safari to access YouTube, go to your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache.
Quit then relaunch Safari. Try a video on YouTube.

Your hard disk is failing and requires replacement. Replacement is not terribly expensive and can be performed by someone sufficiently adept with computer repair. If that's not you, an Apple Store can perform the replacement.

My TC is a 3rd gen.
I actually had to reset to standard defaults not only once but twice. The first time I simply returned to my old profile but that only led to the same message error on the network settings (i.e. IP by default, cannot connect to the internet). Therefore the second time around I kept my profile as backup and re-created a new one plus a guest one.
The airport utility then signaled to issues remaining:
1) Internet access was cut - this I solved by simply reseting the cable modem
2) There were no DNS Servers - I simply copied the ones I had from the previous setup and it worked
I did have AppleCare....
I'm online again and I hope for good.

PS. a small tip - I made captures of all my settings in Network settings, Airport Utility and Network utility using Grab in case of ... if anything it is just handy to get back settings that your are missing when setting up a new configuration

There are many reports of Soundflower being implicated in kernel panics such as yours. Try uninstalling it. It is also possible that it is conflicting with other software such as Apogee.

Third party system modifications such as these are often the cause of the error you describe, and you are using several of them. Research their vendor's websites for possible updates, or uninstallation instructions.

I recommend to check www.icloud.com, are your contacts shown there?
If not -> Something might be not set up correctly on you iOS devices.
Also.. Simple but maybe occuring: Contacts -> Preferences -> Accounts -> iCloud is enabled? (Should be by default if you have iCloud setup via the system preferences, but you never know..)
