Slow Mac, Disk Warrior Help!

Okay, I used Disk Warrior like you told me. I built a directory graph which said that 34% are out of order. Optimized directory have zero items out of order.
When I to Repair Permissions, I get the same error after trying 3X, (2903,-8902).
Any ideas what that means?

"You" proably means "us" or something. The important thing to do is "I am starting to do preventative maintenace" with Disk Warrior.
Throw SuperDuper into the mix.
Rerun the Combo Update.
Then sit back and relax and don't fret, and never ever use older version of OS X for repairing permissions. And make sure you are current (so you should be running from an emergency partition, as well as having your backups and such).
Install OS X on an alternate drive and update.
Backup or clone to sparse disk image and keep safe.
Label new volume "Emergency" and keep it cleaned.
Keep your working system backed up also. Sparse image is great for even 100GB images.
Now if you need to you can restore, clone, migrate.
And there is always the Google Cloud:

Sounds like it could be you are using an older version of DW than 4.1.1??

  • SLOW Mac Book Pro  help appreciated.

Hello friends. I was searching the forums for help to understand why my Mac Book Pro is suddenly so slow... I found and ran etreCheck... so I'll copy and paste it here... the one item in read was that time machine is not configured.... anyway, here you go:
    Problem description:
A few weeks ago, my Macbook pro started running slow… the spinning icon just keeps spinning… it takes so much longer to restart my computer now… 10+ minutes… more than 1/2 of my hard drive is free…
This problem is more evident when I go to close a webpage or program or when I sync Itunes.
    Thanks, G

  • Disk Warrior help

    hi, here's my situation.
2.5 dual with 3.5 gigs of RAM. Running Tiger. hard drive i believe is a Hitachi (whatever is the default drive) and is 160 gigs.
I was editing in DVPSP 3 and it kept quiting on me. so i restarted. when i did the OS did not come up instead i got the folder with the flashing question mark. not good. it happened to me last year and i knew that i was in trouble.
I rebooted with the install cd. i then went to disk utility and tried to repair the disk. i got an error saying, "Invalid B-tree node size." from what i researched this means the drive is corrupted but not a hard drive failure, correct? i also looked for the start up disk but the drive was not detected there as well. all i saw was the install cd.
I also have another internal hard drive installed. a 250 gig drive that i use for all my video work. it just so happened that the drive i was working on last night was my main drive (the 160 gig drive) as the 250 gig drive was full. this drive seems to be ok.
I bought disk warrior last night which i installed on an Imac I have. I hooked this up to the 2.5 dual via a firewire cable. from the Imac i started Disk Warrior and i could see both my drives on the 2.5 dual. i selected my damaged drive and selected "Rebuild."
I realized it was going to take a few hours so i went to sleep. this morning it was done and i read the report, saying it had built a temporary drive. like the dummy that i am (and being half asleep didn't help) i accidently cancelled everything. i didn't click on "Replace." ah!!!
so i re-did everything while i went to work this morning. so when i get home later today, after i click on "Replace." everything will be good? i realize some stuff might be lost but i want to at least be able to boot into my system. i have a lot of photos that i want to save and also the latest project i was working on.
is it true you can also "Preview" the new drive and be able to back up files right then before it replaces your old drive.
any advice will be greatly appreaciated! thanks.

    Hi, Roberto and ds_store—
I'm writing to share a few thoughts, fwiw, in addition to ds_store's helpful reply. Though I consider myself a relative newbie to such maladies (particularly in OS X), I've unfortunately also experienced disk corruption within the last 10 days. . .
    (1) Re: "this means the drive is corrupted but not a hard drive failure, correct?" — probably. But this is something you can easily check. I'd suggest two things:
](a) Booting from your Install Disc, open Disk Utility and select your HD. Note the "S.M.A.R.T. status." Hopefully, it says "verified."
](b) While holding down the option key, boot from your Install Disc again. This will provide you with 2 or 3 choices of "boot volumes" for startup. Select Apple Hardware Test (AHT). Run in Extended Test mode. Among other components, this will provide results evaluating your logic board, mass storage (HD), and memory (RAM).
If Disk Utility reports S.M.A.R.T. status "verified" and AHT indicates that mass storage has "passed," these provide a strong indication that your HD probably has not suffered any significant hardware failure. (Note that this is not definitive without further diagnostics that an Apple-Authorized Service Provider can conduct.)
    (2) Another benefit of running AHT is that it may provide an indication of other factor(s) that caused your Power Mac to suffer from such significant disk directory corruption. Imho, this is a question well worth your attention. (In my case, it was bad RAM. Not only didn't DiskWarrior work initially because of this — but the directory would have probably become corrupted again because of the RAM problem, even if I had been able to replace the directory with one "rebuilt" by DW.) Assuming DW does work for you (which seems likely, based on what you've described), you may benefit from running Disk Utility and DIsk Warrior again in the near future as a means to evaluate whether there is an ongoing source of corruption. Keep in mind that DW focuses on disk directory maintenance and repair — other HD maintenance/repair functions require TechTool Pro or other utilities.
    (3) Re: "a lot of photos that i want to save and also the latest project i was working on" — if DW is successful, your data may be fine. But if it proves necessary (and directory corruption isn't too bad or is improved by DW), you may be able to recover your unsaved data using FireWire Target disk mode, with your PowerMac as target and iMac as host.
    (4) Re: "is it true you can also "Preview" the new drive and be able to back up files right then before it replaces your old drive?" — I haven't tried this personally with DiskWarrior, but it should be feasible, according to the details described in the "What to Look for During Preview" section (pp. 30-33) of the DiskWarrior Manual that you can read from its CD.
I hope some of this is useful to you. Good luck!
    Dean

  • Mac Pro- Damaged Disk/Permissions - Disk Warrior unable to fix, please help

Hey, I am really hoping I can solve this over the discussion board. My Mac Pro 1,1, with OSX 10.6.2 installed, has been acting up really badly lately. Random crashes, really slow, and my Radeon XT1900 is about to die, I think; the fan almost never turns off.
But the main issue I'd like to address is my damaged home disk. I booted up from the install disk and used Disk Utility to "Verify and Repair Disk" on my home disk. It said that the "Header has some minor damage," the repair finished and DU reported that it had repaired the volume and everything was fine.
However, after booting up from the HD, I went back into Disk Utility and did another "Verify Disk" to double check. It came up with an error stating: "Disk Utility stopped verifying 'Home' The disk needs to be repaired. Startup your computer with another disk and use DU to repair this disk."
So I booted from the install disk again, ran Disk Utility, and it said that everything was fine. So I booted back from HD, ran DU - only for it to report the same error as before. Why is DU reporting a problem when booting from disk, but it says there is no problem when running from the install disk?
I decided to get Disk Warrior to see if that would help. I used it to "Repair Disk Permissions" and also "Check All Files & Folders". Disk Warrior then stopped saying: "An unexpected error occurred while attempting to perform the file operations. Restart from DW disc and try again. ERROR CODE (2903, -8902)."
Here are some screenshots of the errors from Disk Warrior and Disk Utility (booted from HD). image: !http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/9789/duerror.png!
    image: !http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/9269/dwerror.png!
So my main question is: Why, after Disk Utility, running off the install disk, reports that it "repaired - some minor damage to the header," does it then report the "header is damaged" when booted from the system?

Don't rely on just Apple First Aid, or trust it with finding and repairing.
Sorry you had to wait this long to get Disk Warrior.
You should always run DW from another hard drive.
Install a fresh clean copy of 10.6.x on a small 30GB partition for emergency only.
you can use that to boot from to run repairs and maintenance using Apple and Disk Warrior.
Don't bother using DVDs or CD to boot from.
It sounds like you are running DW and DU from hard drives, but not clear which or from where (and when).
Always use the SAME version when repairing permissions, never use an older version OS or of Disk Utility.
CLONE your system. Always have a couple bootable backups.
Choice is Apple Disk Utility Restore; SuperDuper; Carbon Copy Cloner
If a drive does have errors, be ready to restore and have backups on hand if it comes to that.
System (OS and apps) probably only change weekly or even monthly.
You can backup /Users to its own backup partition more often, and use Time Machine plus another method there.
Personally, I tend to run DW directory repair first and sometimes only, and only then check files.
TechTool Pro 5 is what I use for checking files, disk media for weak sectors, and some other problems not covered by Disk Warrior; and, because it can run concurrently on multiple volumes and drives.
It is 'iffy' to verify a live system and get an accurate read of its health, but I'd say Disk Utility is "out of its depths, and league" when it comes to finding and repairing, and for the errors it is encountering on your system.
Isolate the sytem from data and media files and libraries as much as you can and still easy to manage.
Most errors are with system or boot drive.
Radeon X1900 needs to be removed, carefully inspected, and any dust in the vents, air intake portion and exhaust, cleaned out. Right now the only real upgrade there is the ATI 4870 for now (Apple's or flashed).

  • External Hard drive "not readable", does not show up in Disk Warrior either. Help me, please!

I have a 500gb G Drive Slim that is almost brand new. I accidentally pulled the cord out when it was connected, and now when I try to open it, it says "not readable by this computer." This is what I see when I go into disc utility:
I called G Drive, and they told me to download Disk Warrior 4. I did, and this is what I see when I open it:
My hard drive doesn't show up...i'm not sure if i'm doing something wrong but I just paid $100 dollars for this and I'd really like some help. I read the manual and it wasn't helpful at all.
    Please help me!

Make sure it's format is Mac OS Extended (Journeled).
To check it's format, plug in the External HDD and search Disk Utility in the spotlight. Click the External HDD and go to the Partition tab. If it isn't Mac OS Extended change it and format it.
You shouldn't need any of these external applications to use it. I have one and use it like a flash drive.

  • Disk Utility and Disk Warrior error on internal hard drive....PLEASE HELP!!

After running idefrag on my internal Western Digital 120gig hard drive. The drive did not appear after I rebooted my mac. I opened Disk Utility and the drive is there but grayed out. I used "repair disk" under First Aid and it gave me this error:
Verify and Repair disk “HD 120”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid B-tree node size
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Then I tried using Disk Warrior 3.0 to rebuild and it gave me this error:
error ""WD 120 GB" cannot be rebuilt. The original directory is too severely damaged. The disk was not modified (2155, 2179)".
I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this, but I need help as most of my important data is on this hard drive. What else can I do?
    I am on a g4 quicksilver with 10.4.3 installed.

Sorry to hear about your problem but unless you are working with very large files such as with video editing, etc., using a defrag utility is not required with OS X and no defrag utility should be used on a hard drive without a backup first.
The current Disk Warrior version for Tiger is 3.0.3 and if Disk Warrior cannot repair the drive/directory, it must be in bad shape which was caused by using idefrag.
You can try using a data recovery utility such as Data Rescue (Prosoft Engineering) which includes a free trial version.

  • Real Time Help Needed: Disk Warrior and Setup Assistant

My system disk crashed a couple of days ago. I installed a clean system on a firewire attached disk and ran Disk Warrior against the failed drive. DW says the disk is too damaged to replace the directory structure. So, I'm in the process of copying over files that it was able to provide access to via the Preview disk. However, I'm wondering whether I can run setup assistant against the Disk Warrior Preview disk to get back the content of the keychain? I had a lot of passwords stored and don't have a backup.
    Anybody offer any help?

Actually, I just remember another step that probably has something to do with this.
The directory entries for ~/Library/Mail and the individual mailboxes were corrupt, so Disk Warrior recovered the contents and put them in two arbitrarily named folders. I copied the contents of the Library/Mail folder into the new system's Library/Mail folder. However, I wasn't sure where to put the mailboxes. I looked on my other Mac system and it had a Mailboxes folder inside the Library/Mail folder, so I created new folder called Mailboxes and copied the recovered mailboxes into the new folder.
Another point that's probably related. The MessageRules.plist file exists in the Library/Mail folder, but the I don't see the rules when I open Mail.app. It looks like Mail.app isn't seeing the contents of Library/Mail.
    Any thoughts?

  • Disk Warrior refuses to install on any mac computer

Have tried getting help from alsoft... no luck.
Anyone know how to install disk warrior on my hard drive without getting the stupid corrupted prefs file warning?
first, there is no pref file... second... how can it be corrupted if it doesn't exist? I get the same error trying to install it on any computer ( which obviously doesn't have a pref file setup yet for disk warrior).
Is this a built in bug in that disk warrior always gives the same installation warning no matter which mac I install it on?
I paid $136 for Disk Warrior, can't return it and it will not install on an imac, ibook running either panther or leopard.
Anyone know of a good fire sale for this piece of crap software? Sorry I even bought it.
How can I force disk warrior to install on any mac computer?

It says there is a corrupted prefs file for Disk Warrior. Funny since there was no previous install and no such file exists... please explain how that could be?
After paying $136 I do have a right to rant for poorly designed software that won't install since it means I'm out a lot of money for something that won't work. That is unless Alsoft wants to provide a refund... they didn't respond after I asked for a refund to return the software so I'll take that as a, "NO!" Buyer beware!
I do live in Canada. We are still paying more for software than in the US. I have version 4.1 and it is for intel and power pc (neither installation worked for a week).
As stated, after trying a week later and ejecting the CD before installing into my utilities folder.... suddenly the installation worked. Maybe they should have a line that says eject CD first before installing if that is an issue?
Still no idea why it wouldn't install but obviously other people are going to run into similar problems at some point in time. For a product that has a lot of hype about it being so great, obviously there are some bugs to work out.

i just restarted my mac then suddenly when it boots, disk utility came and says different option like repair disk, get help, reinstall OSX and I tried to click disk repair but it says that I am um able to repair the disk

It sounds like your hard drive either has a software problem that Disk Utility cannot fix or that the HD has failed (mechanically).
Your Mac may have booted either to your recovery partition or to internet recovery in an attempt to repair the drive- I can't tell from your post.
I'll assume that it was the recovery partition.
Try to boot into internet recovery (hold down option command R at restart), and see if you can repair your HD with Disk Utility. You should also repair permissions while you're there.
If that doesn't work, try to boot into single user mode (restart, hold down ⌘S until you see a black screen with white text) and repair your hard drive. Here's a reference with directions: Repair Your Hard Disk in Single User Mode | Everything Macintosh
If that doesn't work you have a few options:
If your mac originally came with installation disks, you can try to boot from the installation disk and then see if you can repair the HD.
There is a small chance that Techtool Pro 7  will be able to repair your HD if Disk Utility can't.
If none of that works then your HD has probably failed and will need to be replaced, which is not too difficult to do yourself if you can use a screwdriver.

  • Hi, internet on my Mac (OS10.9.1) suddenly became very slow.  Could anyone help me to figure it out the problem?  Thanks.

Hi internet on my Mac(OS10.9.1) suddenly became very slow.  Could somebody help me?  Thanks.

    Try resetting everything:
power down everything: modem, router, and computer
power up each item in turn in the same order: modem, router, and computer. Let each power up completely before moving on to the next.

  • Disk Warrior - Mac OS Services Failure

Having used DW 4.4 on a Mountain Lion Macbook I am unable to replace the rebuilt directory with the above warning.  Any ideas how to combat this?
    Regards

Try this, from a post on another site:
If an application on OS X has damaged the Journaling data, then when you try to run Disk Warrior, you may get this error:the new directory cannot replace the original directory due to a mac os services failure. You may be able to work around this problem by temporarily turning off Journaling via Disk Utility:
    Open Disk Utility
Select the Volume of the drive
Hold down the Option key on the keyboard
Go to the File menu – select Disable Journaling
Now run Disk Warrior again. Afterwards, you can turn back journaling.
If you continue to have problems, you may need to clone or backup the drive to an external, reformat the internal drive, and clone back or reinstall Mac OS X and restore your data. Alsoft may have additional suggestions.
    Regards.

  • Disk Warrior error: "The Disk is still in use ( 2153, 4903)"  HELP!

Thought my Mac HD was fine but I ran Disk Warrior V4.0 on my Tiger drive from an external FW 800 drive with a sandbox bootable clone done by SuperDuper and I got this error message:"The Disk is still in use ( 2153, 4903)"
    Has anyone seen this?

Have you tried running it booted from your MacPro?

  • STILL NEED HELP w/ Disk Warrior pleeeaaase

Have had some interesting encounters with extensions: at startup, the system was hanging up at certain extensions, resulting in my manually uninstalling Tech Tool 3 and a new trial graphics program we tried out, called Silhouette. Have also cleaned the disk drive.
However, I am still unable to use the disk drive reliably. After turning off the TWAIN extension (which cleared up the remaining startup problems), the disk drive won't open upon request after I have inserted the Disk Warrior, which I have used successfully in the past. The last time the drawer would open when I clicked on the Eject Upper Drive icon on my computer was when I inserted the Disk Warrior. When I rebooted, twice the computer failed to recognize that there was a disk in there at all, booting all the way up to the OS 9.2 desktop without even an icon showing the presence of the disk. When I hold down the "C" key while rebooting, the screen remains a blank blue color, with no sign of startup. When I let go of the "C" key, the computer boots up fine, but the Eject Upper Drive shortcut doesn't cause the drive door to open. I killed the shortcut and created another alias for the desktop, but it doesn't work either. When I try to reboot and hold down the right button on the mouse, to cause the door to open while rebooting, an icon of a disk appears, with a question mark on its face. If I release the mouse button, the computer starts up fine...but the Upper Drive won't open and I can't see any icon to indicate that I have Disk Warrior in there.
I have been at this all day...does this make sense to anyone?

    Hi, Sandy -
The term 'optical drive' is a generic one - it refers to any drive which uses a laser (optical means) to read a disk. This includes a basic CD drive, a CD/DVD drive, etc.
The term 'optical drive' will not appear in System Profiler. Instead, it should appear on one of the "Internal ATA" buses as something like DVD-ROM or one of the other variants of that term. Since your G4 (MDD) has two optical drives, both should be displayed separately, but on the same Internal ATA bus.
If the drive in question is not listed, then there may well be something wrong with the drive itself, as Tom has suggested.
However, if neither of the two optical drives is listed, that would tend to indicate there is something wrong with the bus that serves both those drives - perhaps the cable has become disconnected at the main logic board, or the controller on that board may have failed.
Is there a way to force it open?
On older machines the answer would be yes - the outer drive door could be pried open, and the 'emergency Mac ejection tool' (a straightened paperclip) could be inserted into a hole on the inner face of the drive to manually eject a disk.
Not sure if the newer drives still have that hole, or if it has been relocated to the rear of the drives.
Okay - found an Apple KBase article that addresses that, complete with pictures -
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88215
It appears that in some cases it is necessary to remove the drive in order to access that hole.

  • Mac Mini has crashed - Disk Warrior and External Hard Drive Question.

I have Mac Mini that has crashed.  I purchased Disk Warrior and was able to boot from the CD.  Disk Warrior allowed me to see my files again but there is no way I can move them back onto my hard drive.  I cannot grab them.  Before I go into specifics....If I purchase an external hard drive and try to hook it up to my Mac Mini, will I be able move these files to this new external hard drive?  Is this a possibility?
Or will my new external hard drive need to go through a set up phase - which might be impossible since hard drive I'm trying to take the files from is technically dead?
Sorry - I'm a novice at these things.

Hello, no apologies needed for being a novice, great you asked!
YES, depends where you buy the Drive, it may need Formatting first to Mac OS Extended...
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/partitioning_tiger.html
(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Thanks to Pondini, Formatting,  Partitioning, Verifying,  and  Repairing  Disks...
    http://Pondini.org/OSX/DU.html
These generally come Mac Ready, & get Firewire if you have a Firewire port, much faster...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
Then in DiskWarrior, hold Option or alt key when selecting Internal to repair, that will do the best job of Scavenging the directory & provide a whole new Drive icon to copy or clone your info over to the external drive.
