  • Download iOS 8 once to Mac Mini Server and upgrade all iOS devices in the network

Is it possible to download iOS8 only once to the Mac Mini Server and use it to upgrade all eligible iOS devices (iPhones and iPads) in the same LAN?
I tried the following methods and they are just not working:
    1. Connect an iPads Mini with Retina Display to the iTunes on Mac.  I chose Download Only. Once downloaded the iPad Software Upgrade, I upgraded the connected iPad to iOS8.  Then I connect another iPad (used to be on another Mac) to the same iTunes.  I had to download iOS 8 again.  It's not using the same downloaded iOS 8 file. (I did the same thing for an iPhone.  Same result.)
    2. I turned on the Caching Service (not Software Upgrade Service, i.e. for Mac Software) on the Mac Mini Server from the Server app.  I then repeat step 1 above and got the same result.  It seems that the Caching Service does not cache the iOS 8  Software Upgrade like what it does for other apps.  (I think I may need to use some Apple Scripts but I have no such experience.)

Yes, it should work that way.  However, I was told by an Apple Support that there was a problem and thus Server 3.2.1 was unable to do so.
I paid for Server 4 and it better provides the expected Caching Services for both iOS Software and Mac Software through the iOS and Mac App Stores.

  • Cannot start Mac mini server after changing permissions

I have a two-day-old Mac mini (server version) and all was OK until I decided to change the permissions on both hard drives (and all enclosed folders and files) to give read/write access to administrators. I received quite a few error messages about invalid kernel file extensions (I think) which I elected to ignore or override. Then when trying to log off, the machine hung.
Safe reboot does not work. I have rebooted using <Command> S and get the following amongst the many messages:
    Bug: launchctl.c:3557 (23930):17: ioctl(s6, SIOCAIFADDR_IN6, &ifra6) != -1
then at the end of display, I get the following as the last 4 lines:
launchctl: Dubious permissions on file (skipping): /Library/LaunchDaemons
launchctl: Dubious permissions on file (skipping): /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
launchctl: Dubious permissions on file (skipping): /etc/mach_init.d
    AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement: initialization complete
There are no peripherals and I cannot try re-installing Snow Leopard for two reasons. First, I have no disk. More importantly, there is no CD drive - this is a Mac mini.
    Please help!

doing this completed scrambled your system. you now have no choice but to reinstall Snow Leopard.
and in the future NEVER use "apply to enclosed items on ANY system created folders. and certainly NEVER EVER use it on the whole system drive.

  • Instability in 2012 Mac Mini Server after Yosemite 10.1.1 Install

I bought a NEW 2012 Mac Mini server on clearance in the online Apple Store last month. I had a 256 SDD installed as startup drive along with Yosemite earlier this week. It crashes, freezes and randomly restarts. Not sure where to start with trying to figure this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It happens under various circumstances but here is the report on the latest that happened a few minutes ago. I had clicked on the Desktop Icon "Macintosh SSD", the boot drive. I got the spinning wheel and then a spontaneous restart.
I apologize if too much of the report is included here. Not sure where to stop.

Glad that you got it solved, John. That model was only replaced at the end of last year, it is not that old and far better in terms of flexibility than the current models. Although the current models are growing away from SATA and towards PCI which, in its logical conclusion, will be faster ito access (read and write), speeds.

  • Mac mini unusable after upgrade to 10.5.6

I upgraded a Tiger 10.4.11 Mac mini to Leopard using the 10.5.6 DVD.
After the upgrade, the computer is so slow it is unusable. Spotlight it indexing but that does not seem to be the cause of the slowdown. I checked the system log, and it shows "memberd" is crashing continuously.
I used launchctl to remove memberd from the launch list and the computer works normally again.
How can I prevent memberd from being launched every time I restart the computer? What could be starting it?

If memberd is constantly crashing, there's something else wrong with your system that is causing it to do so.
Simply stopping memberd isn't a solution.
Have you tried the usual troubleshooting techniques of running Disk Utility to make sure your hard drive verifies OK, and running a "Repair Permissions?"

  • Mac Mini lagging after upgrading to Mavericks

Upgraded Mac mini to Mavericks.  System before was running great with no lag time and fast with the internet along with different applications, email, uploading photos, no problem.  After upgrading to Mavericks noticed lag times in logging into different applications, browsers, email and definitely uploading photos.  Did a speed check on four different sites and all were over the 15mps up and 1 down with my internet provider.  Before I had 4 up and 1 down with my internet provider before provider upgraded everyone to the 15 up and 1 down, it was fast so no problems before.  Any suggestions before I drive to Des Moines for a Genius bar appointment?  Thanks much appreciated.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • My new Mac Mini Server - what upgrades?

    Hi,
I have just purchased a base model Mac Mini, and a copy of Server.
It is my intention to store all of our media on an external USB3 drive  (with music, movies and other stuff it's 3TB)  I have also connected an iMac (months old) and a 17" MBP to the server via Ethernet. All of this is going through a brand new Airport Extreme. The iMac will write files to a second USB3 drive.
My questtion is - what to upgrade?
I just installed more memory, now 8GB. But is it worth upgrading the 5400 rpm drive to a 7200? Adding an SSD?  I am unsure whether I will see any benefit, as the files will not be written internally to the Mini. Make sense?
I would also like to ask about settings - should the Mini be set to never sleep, and allow drives to spin down? Any help is much appreciated.  :-)
    Hugh

As Simon Slavin writes: learn about your server and profile your activities, and find the bottlenecks.  You've got some initial setup for your network probably including local DNS and maybe VPNs and firewalls and related gizmos, and a whole host of other Server.app and system and networking-related details to become familiar with.
There are lots of ways to spend money.   Buying hardware piecemeal or upgrading incrementally and particularly without a plan or goal, or upgrading some component that isn't your bottleneck, can both get expensive.   Have a plan.
There are massive lists of device bandwidths around, but you need to learn about and find the performance bottlenecks first.
If you're on a budget, also consider where you're going with your general configuration.  Your plan.  Your 3 TB is comparatively small by current standards.  That's the capacity of one current-generation disk.  If you're planning on increasing aggregate storage past that 3 TB value, then you might decide to pick different storage hardware for an incremental upgrade, for instance.   You might look to use a USB 3 multiple-disk-bay storage or a Thunderbolt multiple-disk-bay rack for storage, for instance.  Also consider whether you're adding storage or servers over time, as if you're not likely adding servers, then direct-attached storage is usually cheaper.  If you're adding servers or serving a whole lot of data via the local network, then you're getting into networking speeds and feeds.
Given you're on top-end WiFi gear, as a guess GbE Ethernet and either direct-attached or network-attached storage are probably going to be on your upgrade plan, when you get to that.  An internal SSD will be screaming fast here if you're getting throttled by the internal HDD (again: know your bottleneck!), but you're going to spend far more for an equivalent capacity of SSD than with the "rotating rust" HDD storage.
But yes, buy your mom or your spouse or your significant other a gift, and then spend some time learning about your new gear, how it works, and where its limits are.

  • Mac mini server, server app broken after mavericks

I bought mac mini server and upgraded to mavericks but my server app doesn't upgrade, I've checked in my app store and it ask me to buy the server app again.. when i try to open my server app it tells me: You can’t open the application “Server” because it is not supported on this type of Mac. any ideas how to fix this?

No, I didn't I thought it was covered when I bought the Server 2.0 when I bought mac mini server..

  • MAC MINI SERVER WITH Mountian lion....

I purchased a mac mini "server" after Mountian lion came out I did the upgrade in OS only to find out my "Server" function will not work on Mountian Lion.... what's up apple....I've been a fan for 6 computers and didn't expect this.

Restore your previous installation or purchase Server 2.0.
The "server" part of te system has been broken out into
a seperate add-on application instead of being tightly integrated
as a seperate version of OSX.

  • Server app not responding after upgrading Mac Mini Server

    Hi all,
I (like many of you) upgraded my Mac Mini Server yesturday. The install went well, except that when I start the Server.app, I end up with the default Server.app window and an eternal beach ball cursor...  it checked into the apps and system logs and nothing coming out of Sever.app.  However, there is a possible trace on slad...  Anyone with similar problem or suggestions ?
    thanks!

    The program is unresponsive.
I looked at the console. I don't what it means but the screenshot is attached

  • Mac mini Server mid.2010 upgrade to Mavericks?

Hi, my Mac mini Server (2.66GHz Intel Core Duo, 8Gb RAM) running OS X 10.8.5 does not propose me to upgrade to Mavericks through "Software Update". Does it mean it's not safe to upgrade? Why do I read that a Mac Mini more recent than 2009 can run Mavericks?
My Mac Book Air upgraded through "Software Update" so I did not do anything with the Mac mini yet. Any advice on wether to upgrad or not is appreciated. I do not use the Server part, I understand that if I upgrade to Mavericks I'll have to pay for the upgrade of the Server should I need it.
Basically my question is why doesn't the Software Update propose me to upgrade my Mac mini.

OS X Mavericks requires an Early 2009 or newer Mac mini. As your Mac has got an Intel Core Duo processor, you shouldn't be able to upgrade, but to check this, open the Mac App Store and try to download OS X Mavericks. The Mac App Store will show an error if your Mac is not compatible.
If it's compatible, you will have to purchase OS X Server after upgrading. Make a backup of your files with Time Machine and check that your applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

  • Slow Ethernet on Mac mini server

    Set up:
    Mac Mini Server - Mid 2011 - i7 Quad 2GHz - 8GB RAM - OSX 10.7.3
    13" MacBook Pro - Mid 2009 - Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz - 8GB RAM - OSX 10.7.3
Both wired in to Virgin SuperHub Switch/Router and physically next to each other
    Hi All,
Bit of a strange one this but I recently upgraded my cable connection to 100MB line from 50MB. As everyone does, the first thing I did was to test my new toy on speedtest.net. I was overjoyed to see my MBP fly directly up to 104Mbps dl speed. However, my Mac Mini Server peaked out at somewhere around the 60Mbps range. At first I thought it was flakey network connection and so duley tested at random intervals during the day, one device after another but always with the same (or similar) result. As stated above the kit is physically next to one another and both on Ethernet. I have also tried swapping over LAN cables, difference ports and new cables all together but no change. Next I tried to change the MTU settings on my Mac Mini Server but again no improvement (plus the MBP is still on the standard Auto config 1000BaseT Full-duplex with a standard Ethernet MTU of 1500.
The hardware spec states that they have slightly difference NIC's installed but the MAC Mini Server is the newer of the two and all software is up to date. Any idea's pls?

Hi BD, thanks for responding again.
I've disabled TM while I test and I dont think Spot light is doing anything. I've also run the test now tens of time at all times of the day.
RE console, i've looked and nothing jumps out (although im no expert there)
Re connection priority, yes top of the list, infact diabled everything else while I test also.
One other point, the Mac Mini Server does have the server addition of Lion OSX, sorry i didnt make this clear earlier. I normally only run the TM, Web, Profie Manager and Files sharing servivces - no are them are under much load at the moment although, again, I even disabled all of these while I test and no change to the result.

  • Mac Mini server won't boot after logoff, any suggestions?

My mac Mini Server will not boot after administrator logoff, I get a gray screen with the spinning progress wheel, but nothing happens.  Any suggestions?

Can you boot into single user mode? If so, run fsck and post the results.
