SLOW Mac Pro rendering on compressor

Hi all,
I've just purchased a mac pro with 2x2.8GHZ XEON quad. I've upped the Ram to 4GB and it's carrying an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT. I'm running Final Cut Studio and it is VERY slow on rendering. I'm working with HDV footage and outputting it to Quicktime 7 Streaming (300Kbps). It is taking over 24 hours+ to render 4 hours of footage in compressor. I've upped the priority to "HIGH" but I'm at my wits end as the whole process does not seem any faster than on my first edition MacBookPro. I've checked and the processor never really gets above using 30% of its total power. It's not a Ram problem (its almost always got 1Gb plus free) and it cant be the hard drive. It's also not a problem that seems to be related to the type of file I'm outputting as it is slow on all renders.
Does anyone know how to force my computer to use almost all of its power on these heavy tasks because at the moment I hardly see the point in having such a high powered machine?
All help very much appreciated!

Unfortunately most software including Final Cut Studio aren't efficient at multi-core processing. This should change when Snow Leopard comes out. For now you can set up a virtual cluster in Qmaster with a separate instance for each physical CPU core in you Mac. The only problem is you can't use a cluster when exporting directly from Final Cut Pro. You have to export to a file and then open compressor then bring that file in. Here is a simple guide to set it up http://www.benscottproductions.com/etc/Virtual_Clusters.html
The guide suggests configuring half as many instances as physical CPU cores. I set mine to 1 instance per core but this is entirely up to you.

  • PAINFULLY slow Mac Pro 2.66

About a week or so ago I bought an Apple refurb Mac Pro 2.66
It is replacing a Dual 1.8 G5 with 2GB of RAM. My plan was to "suffer" with 1GB of RAM in the Mac Pro for a while until RAM prices went down. At the same time I bought a MacBook 1.83/512MB to replace my iBook 1.33/512MB laptop.
Right to the point, the Mac Pro pages out of control, all the time. Even closing windows causes extreme paging. To put it into perspective, my Mac Pro pages significantly more than my old iBook that only had 512MB of RAM. It is so slow I can't even do work. I was going out of my mind. Then, I figured I'd boot the Mac Pro off of the MacBook and run all the disk utilities I could find just to make sure nothing was wrong. Oh I guess I should also say first that the MacBook is just as slow, although with 512 - 64 MB of RAM, it has an excuse at least. So I booted the Mac Pro off the MacBook over Firewire, and started running tests. All the tests were fine. The directory wasn't scrambled. The disk was barely fragmented, no volume problems at all, S.M.A.R.T. tests all passed. But then I noticed something. The machine was no longer paging. Booted off the MacBook's drive, it was acting like a machine with 1GB of ram. It has its slow moments but over all it was fine. Apps opened super fast. It was as fast as I thought the Mac Pro was going to be. So at this point I started to get suspicious of the hard drive. Despite passing all tests. So I googled it's model number and found a manufacturers spec sheet. The first thing I noticed was this quote:
"Super-quiet drive is almost inaudible. Difference between idle and seek can hardly be detected by human ear, making drive operation almost silent."
My drive spins up nice and quiet, but seeking is so loud, I can hear it across the room. So now I'm really starting so suspect something is wrong. Both computers have been so slow, I've barely been using them lately but I have much work to do.
--also as an out of order note, I do run Adobe software, but all the slowness observations happen even when running ONLY intel native apps. Running PPC stuff just makes it worse but its still painfully bad without them.
So hows this for a theory. I've been told that intel code is optimized more for fast execution likes larger amounts of ram, so a system short on ram feels the pinch more. That, plus the fact that 64MB is being used for video RAM, is making my MacBook legitimately slow. The Mac Pro on the other hand, has a hard drive problem which is causing super slow paging. So I'm hoping that once the drive is replaced, I'll be able to work on the machine normally, or almost normally.
To give you an idea of how bad the paging is: remember when we used system 7 and would click on a program, and stop everything, walk into the other room, and come back when the application was opened. Thats what I do now on a 1 GB machine. Even switching between apps can take a minute or two.
    What do ya think?

Unless you yourself did a full fresh clean install of the OS, that is the first thing to do.
Second, don't migrate any files except data to the Mac Pro. And definitely not PPC program files, install those, but don't use Migration Assistant.
It sounds like your system is just suffering from "molasses effect" of a poorly installed and updated system, and that someone used Migration Assistant on it.
2GB of RAM is nice, but if you are running heavy files or memory hungry, 4GB would be nice.
You may want to setup a boot drive, a scratch drive, and a data drive to help spread the work over multiple drives. Also, the OEM drives do tend to be slow and sluggish, and you want your boot drive to be your best, whether 300GB or 500GB best of class, or 10K Raptor.
Wipe the drive, zero-all, do a fresh system install and update, and I think you'll find it behaves. Clone the system before installing 3rd party so you have a known good system state and don't have to customize everything again.

  • Slow Mac Pro

    We have a MacPro 3,1
Dual quad core , with 6 gig of memory.
The start up takes about 9 minutes.  I understand that it is probably becuase the computer is trying to load some old software package.  I have unintalled anything that looks suspicious, but it still starts slow. I have attached the system start up log.  Can anyone tell me what is going on?

  • Mavericks Slow Mac Pro 4.1

Been poor since upgrade to Mavericks.  I had hope 10.9.2 would help but not the case. Browsed about and found a thing that said do a SuperDuper backup, erase boot drive, clone back.  Seemed an improvement for a short time but soon the spinning ball was back.
I noticed in another thread mention of the backup battery - mine is the original (October 2009).
Most of the spinning ball activity is with Apple basic programs:
Mail:  Very slow to open a Reply or Forward, also seems unable to do anything when a message is being Sent.
Safari:  I have a lag with my Oceanic (TW) cable so some might be that BUT:  Close a tab and get the ball, swipe back with the trackpad and get the ball.
Text Edit:  Random times, no real specific cause.
Cocktail:  Now noticeably slower to Open.
General:  Seems slower to change from one program to another.  Also, occasional spinning ball for no apparent reason.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Doug

    Thanks.
    Mac Pro 4.1, NVIDIA GT 120, 12GB, 10.9.3 boot drive WD WD3000HLHX
Upgraded from 10.8 to Mavericks.  Mountain Lion worked nicely.
    Running through your helpful list:
Don't see why but would my old GT 120 contribute?  I read something about the OS using the GPU for a little help.  I don't game and only have 1 24" 1080p ViewSonic monitor so doesn't seem I would be taxing the video card.  Might Mavericks be looking for help my GT 120 cannot provide?
Boot Drive - The Velociraptor is overkill on a 3GHz bus and the OSX partition is only about 25% used.  Doesn't seem that would be a problem.
I found the  Slow Mac After Mavericks   before the original post here.
I did item 1: using SuperDuper - no change.
I sort of did item 2: but only a regular "Fastest" erase and only the OSX partition.  Mavericks does not have the old number of passes secure erase.  I assume going to "most secure" would do the additional passes.  I did do a new install Mavericks on another disc with import from my original boot drive.  This could drag in extra stuff but I really don't have much loaded on my computer.  I then did a SuperDuper of OSX back to the boot drive.  If you think a most secure erase and a clean install would help, it can be done.  Windows 7 has had many updates since my purchase January 2011 so it is reinstalling Windoze I would really like to avoid.
Did item 3: and have used Combo for update to 10.9.3.
Item 5: applies and no way to get around that.
The applicable link in the spinning beach ball (temporarily, but frequently) does not seem to be it.  Activity Monitor seems to think I have no need for this much computer because most of its capability is idle.  HandBrake is the only time it even breaks a sweat.  The one app I never see it in is SuperCard mentioned by the OP.  The problems do not seem different with SuperCard running or not.
I do thank you both for your responses.  Unfortunately, it is likely Apple wants to help me decide to buy a new computer.  I have been getting a new Mac every four years since 1985 so it is time.  If they had not gone to that wastebasket with no optical or hard drive bays, I'd have done it.  If I buy new, it will be a Mini and all the associated junk.  Where is the expandable desktop Mac in the Apple lineup?

  • How do I clean up a SLOW Mac Pro?

Hi - Finally time to clean up this Mac Pro.  It's gettting slower and slower.
May I please ask for your suggestions?
    Thank you

    Usually you don't
What does slow mean or behavior, what apps.
I wish I had $1 for every such question I see, more so on OS X forum. But also earlier today -
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3790641?tstart=0
Do a clean install after you format a new drive and then after all the updates and insuring it works use Setup Assistant.
    There is no magic bullet.
Maybe do two Safe Boots. Repair the disk drive. =
Maybe you already deleted all the browser cache.
Move the home folder to another drive.
Add more RAM. Buy an SSD.
Unplug and disconnect all the devices other than kb and mouse.
Mac Pro normally don't slow down over time unless you have crashed and froze and haven't repaired the boot drive. Or you have been using the same system drive through two full OS upgrades. A new OS is great time to buy and use a new drive and keep the old one handy as dual boot backup.

  • Indesign extremly slow (Mac Pro)

    Hi all,
my InDesign is very slow since i have updated from CS 4 to CS 5.5.
It seems to be pretty slow when i place some PDF into the .indd.
Also in low-quality settings it was incredibly slow and the cpu-usage
was far over 100%. How can this be?
I have tested the System in 32 and 64bit-mode.
    System specs:
    Adobe CS 5.5 (latest updates)
    Mac Pro 3,1
    Dual-Quadcore 3 Ghz
    10 GB Ram
    NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GT
    OS X 10.6.8 (latest upates)
I hope there is a solution.
InDesign is also pretty slow on my PC.
    i5-3570K
    DD3-2133MHz
    Ati HD-7950
    edit:
I have changed one settings now in InDesign.
While moving an object i cant see the content now
in real-time. This is a performance gain.
But i still wonder how bad the InDesign-engine is.
While my computer is able to render a complex
3D-scene in an amazing fps-count, InDesign
has huge cpu-load with some flat 2d stuff.

The speed of the application can be related to many things, including:
    RAM
    Live pre-flight running
    Live spell check running
    Display set to High
    Other applications running
    OS
You mention waiting for an update for Mavericks - there are already a few threads in this forum about issues with Mavericks - check them out.

  • Re: Slow Mac Pro Laptop

    Hi,
I have a MacBookPro8,1 that I purchased a few years back. Recently it has been taking a while to boot up and Safari has been freezing quite a lot. I have updated all software but hasn't helped. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ed

You may be able improve the speed with some software work but it could also be your disk is corrupt or failing.
    Try an SMC Reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Is it faster now?  If not, proceed.
    Backup your data immediately:
Before proceeding you should make sure you have a current backup.  If it has been getting slower over time your disk could be a failing slowly.  SATA drives have two retry modes: short and long.  They can continue operating as read errors are increasing.  The long retry cycle is very long and can cause significant performance degradation.  If it has started long retries then it is likely to get worse and eventually fail.  SSDs also have a failure mode where the fail slowly.
    Time Machine Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
    Most commonly used backup methods:

Methodology to protect your data.  Backups vs. Archives.  Long-term data protection:

Try the remedies at http://www.macworld.com/article/2026650/mac-troubleshooting-what-to-do-when-your -computer-is-too-slow.html
    Safe Mode:
    - Reboot the system in Safe Boot mode.
    - Power on the Mac and when you hear the bong, hold down the shift key until it is booted.
    - Be patient, this will take some time while it checks the filesystem.
    - Restart.
Run Disk Utility (found in the Applications folder):
-In Disk Utility look at the S.M.A.R.T. Status.
If it says the disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired then stop.
Your system could be in danger of failing at any time and you need to replace the disk soon.
      Back your system up twice.
(You will need a second external disk for the second backup.)
Consider using Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper! for the second backup to clone the disk.
Jump to the Hardware replacement section.
Repair Disk Permissions and Verify Disk.  If Disk Permissions reports errors, don’t worry.  That is normal.  If Verify Disk reports errors then they need to be repaired.  Otherwise skip to the reinstall OS X section.
    Repairing your system disk:
    - Boot in recovery mode.
(Boot and when you hear the bong hold down the
Command and R keys simultaneously until you see the recovery screen.)
    - Select disk utility.
    - Select your system drive.
    - Repair Disk.
    - Did it complete without errors?
If not you may need a new disk or SSD
or you may just need to reformat the drive.  Seek expert help.
If it completed normally then reboot.
-Did it boot faster and is it more responsive?
    Reinstall OS X:
If it is still slow you should reinstall OS X.
    - Boot in Recovery Mode again.
    - Follow the instructions to reinstall OS X.
    - Now does it boot and run faster?
    Hardware replacement or upgrade?
Hopefully by now your Mac is back to its normal speed.  If a hardware repair is indicated take it to an Genius bar at an Apple store for a free diagnosis and estimate of repairs.  If it is under warranty or AppleCare they will repair it for free.  If not, you can compare their estimate with DIY repairs or repairs from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
    Genius reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ .
or find an Apple Authorized Service Provider https://locate.apple.com/country
You can speed it up further by upgrading some hardware.  For the following memory, disk or SSD replacements and upgrades check out OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/, Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/ and Kingston http://www.kingston.com/us/.  You will need to know your Mac the year and season your Mac was first sold and model number which can be found here:
     > About This Mac > More Info… > System Report > Model Identifier:
If your Mac has 2 or 4 GB of RAM, consider an upgrade to 8 GB (if the memory is upgradeable).  An 8 GB memory upgrade is only $100.  When I upgraded a MacBook from 2 GB o 8 GB it booted thee times faster.
If your Mac has a disk and it won’t repair properly or is low on disk space, consider an upgrade to a 1 TB, 7200 RPM disk. Check out a one terabyte HGST 7K1000 7200 rpm, SATA III drive from OWC or consider an SSD.
If your Mac has a disk, consider an upgrade to an SSD.  120, 240, and 480 GB options are common.
OWC has SSD replacements and upgrades for MacBook Airs and Retina MacBook Pros.
Good luck.  May the software fixes do the trick.

  • Slow Mac Pro....Sometimes

Why am always waiting for what I type to show up in safari? If I type a web adress into safari, I sometimes might take 5-10 seconds to show, and while I wait I am getting the spinning beach ball. Anyone have any ideas, My Hard drive is not even half full, and I have 6 gigs of ram. I have the early 2008 model with dual quad 2.8's.

    Backup your drive with SuperDuper.
Repair the backup drive permissions and directory with Disk Utility followed by Disk Warrior.
    Then boot from the backup.
Still have trouble? Create a new user account to test with.
Answer this: when did it start?
    What type of keyoard?
    Swap out for another keyboard.
    Wired or wireless?
    Bad or pinched cable?
When did you last delete and reset Safari cache and history?
    ~/Library/Caches/Metadata
    ~/Library/Safari/
Keep Activity Monitor open so you can see what processes are using high cpu %.

  • Mac Pro + Shake problems

Just set up a bunch of Mac Pro Intel workstations to replace our dual and quad G5s. All clients are direct attached to fiber. All stations running 10.4.9 and Xsan 1.4.1.
New issues we're seeing are Shake cannot consistently render onto the Xsan volume (when it could perfectly with the G5s!). Sometimes the rendered QuickTime are 32k files. Not at all what we want.
Also the Finder has many display issues. Logging out or restarting helps to clear that up. But this is really bad. Terminal shows all files fine, but the Finder is corrupt.
Anyone else seeing these issues, or have solutions? Or is this just plain Intel Mac Pro + Xsan + Shake bug?

    Strange news!
Niklas Algren on the Shake listserv discovered something about the issue of Shake (on Intel Mac Pros) rendering 32k QuickTimes on Xsan volumes:
(Thanks to Chris Noellert on the Xsan list for sharing this workaround, which I have tested and verified).
Basically, Shake on Intel-based macs will randomly fail to render Quicktime fileouts with non-local destinations (nfs/smb/xsan). The console will echo error 43.
Now, for the fun part; it will only fail if the length of the complete output path is an odd number Smile
I.e. /Volumes/temp/abcd.mov will render fine, /Volumes/temp/abc.mov will fail.

  • Which Mac Pro? More cores=slower speeds? And most of us know the speed matters or FPU for music and I don't understand the faster is for the least amount of procs. And while I get the whole rendering thing and why it makes sense.

Which Mac Pro? More cores=slower speeds? And most of us know the speed matters or FPU for music and I don't understand the faster is for the least amount of procs. And while I get the whole rendering thing and why it makes sense.
The above is what the bar says. It's been a while and wondered, maybe Apple changed the format for forums. Then got this nice big blank canvas to air my concerns. Went to school for Computer Science, BSEE, even worked at Analog Devices in Newton Massachusetts, where they make something for apple.
The bottom line is fast CPU = more FPU = more headroom and still can't figure out why the more cores= the slower it gets unless it's to get us in to a 6 core then come out with faster cores down the road or a newer Mac that uses the GPU. Also. Few. I'm the guy who said a few years ago Mac has an FCP that looks like iMovie on Steroids. Having said that I called the campus one day to ask them something and while I used to work for Apple, I think she thought I still did as she asked me, "HOW ARE THE 32 CORES/1DYE COMING ALONG? Not wanting to embarrass her I said fine, fine and then hung up.  Makes the most sense as I never quite got the 2,6,12 cores when for years everything from memory to CPU's have been, in sets of 2 to the 2nd power.  2,4,8,16,32,64,120,256,512, 1024, 2048,4196,8192, 72,768.  Wow. W-O-W and will be using whatever I get with Apollo Quad.
Peace to all and hope someone can point us in THE RIGHT DIRECTION.  THANK YOU

Thanks for your reply via email/msg. He wrote:
If you are interested in the actual design data for the Xeon processor, go to the Intel site and the actual CPU part numbers are:
    Xeon 4 core - E5.1620v2
    Xeon 6 core - E5.1650v2
    Xeon 8 core - E5.1680v2
    Xeon 12 core - E5.2697v2
I read that the CPU is easy to swap out but am sure something goes wrong at a certain point - even if solderedon they make material to absorb the solder, making your work area VERY clean.
My Question now is this, get an 8 core, then replace with 2 3.7 QUAD CHIPS, what would happen?
I also noticed that the 8 core Mac Pro is 3.0 when in fact they do have a 3.4 8 core chip, so 2 =16? Or if correct, wouldn't you be able to replace a QUAD CHIP WITH THAT?  I;M SURE THEY ARE UO TO SOMETHING AS 1) WE HAVE SEEN NO AUDIO FPU OR PERHAPS I SHOULD CHECK OUT PC MAKERS WINDOWS machines for Sisoft Sandra "B-E-N-C-H-M-A-R-K-S" -
SOMETHINGS UP AND AM SURE WE'LL ALL BE PLEASED, AS the mac pro      was announced Last year, barely made the December mark, then pushed to January, then February and now April.
Would rather wait and have it done correct than released to early only to have it benchmarked in audio and found to be slower in a few areas- - - the logical part of my brain is wondering what else I would have to swap out as I am sure it would run, and fine for a while, then, poof....
PEACE===AM SURE APPLE WILL BLOW US AWAY - they have to figure out how to increase the power for 150 watts or make the GPU work which in regard to FPU, I thought was NVIDIA?

  • Premiere Pro CC continuous crash and extremely slow renders on a new Mac Pro.

    Hello,
recently we changed our editing machines with the new Mac Pro with this configuration:
    - CPU 3,5 GHz 6 core Intel Xeon E5
    - 32 GB RAM
    - 2x AMD FirePro D700 6 GB
we work on a server connected to the Mac Pro in Dual Ethernet configuration.
The rendering of a sequence at 1920x1080 with 3 video tracks (video footage converted at ProRes 422 LT, a title on a linked After Effects Comp and a PSD graphic overlay of a small logo) of the length of about 3 minutes it takes about 4 hour... when it doesn't crash.
When it crash, usually when i simply scroll the timeline, i receive an error message very long (if you want I can send you a rtf file about it, it's too long to paste it here).
    These are my system information:
    - Premiere Pro CC 8.2.0 (65)
    - I've installed every updates available at this time
    - OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
Thank you very much in advance, and sorry for my bad english.

Thanks Andrea for your assistance in reporting that additional information. You have come across an intermittent bug which has been reported by other users with no reliable repro steps for us to follow in house. So it appears to be mainly system specific, but we're not even sure which sorts of systems demonstrate it yet.
One other thing to try is clearing your media cache files (from preferences > media panel). In the meantime,e the best thing to do is make sure you submit those crash logs to adobe whenever you get them. This helps us identify common thread among various users who may be experiencing the same problem. Also, if you have time, please file a bug report describing the steps that caused the issue in your case: http://adobe.ly/ReportBug
Please be as specific as possible when describing your steps. Without a repeatable case, a bug like this is very, very difficult to fix. Thanks again for your support.
To work around the sloe render for AE comp problem, please try right clicking on the comp in the timeline and then choose the "Render and Replace" command to transcode it out to a more easily handled format. This should help a lot with your performance slowness, and you will still have the ability to restore the original comp files if needed.

  • Rendering slowed to a grinding halt CS6 on brand new mac pro...

Unbelievably and excruciatingly painful slow rendering in AE CS6 on a brand new Mac Pro.
    My Pro:
    3.5 Ghz 6-core Intel Xeon E5
    32 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC
    AMD FirePro D700 6144MB
    OSX 10.9.2
    1) Internal 500GB SSD - (using 90gb for AE media cache)
    External Thunderbolt drives:
    2) 2 TB WD Black Caviar - (hosting all project assets)
    3) 2 TB WD Black Caviar - (rendering destination)
    Running After Effects CS6
The footage in my comp is just a bunch of illustrator files, and shape layers. There are 2 videos, but removing them does not improve the rendering. All the illustrator files are RGB. I am using effects on layers, but nothing out of the ordinary, a few displacement maps, some grain (non animated), some distort mesh (pre-rendering the distort mesh helped a little, but pretty sure there is something REALLY wrong here)
When its rendering, and I look at Activity Monitor, 85% of the CPU is still idle! I'm using Rendering Multiple Frames... 6 Cores for AE - 4 for others. 3GB for AE.
Of the 32gb RAM saving 4 for others applications.
For 25 seconds of footage, the task bar says something like 6 hours to render... and then it doesn't even finish. Even pre-rendering the distort mesh in a 4 layer pre-comp, for 25 seconds, took 25 minutes.
Someone please help, I'm not sure whats going on, but something is horribly wrong.

Not new to AE. Was rendering with animation codec, and have also tried using pro res 4444 to see if it will help.
    comp size 1920 x 1080 @ 60fps
Turned off RMFS - and while this helps with the RAM preview (also setting the RAM preview to skip 1)
    I was able to render using pro res 4444 @ 50% resolution @ 50% frame rate @ draft quality in 11 min (25 seconds) after pre-rendering 2 pre-comps.
Which is much better, but really don't understand why it could be taking so long.
I want to be able to RAM preview @ 60 fps - but every time RMFS is turned on it throws errors like "AE needs 2 or more playback frames" and I've also seen the error about it skipping frames and to allocate more memory to background processes. But no other programs running...
And I made a mistake: 12 cores, 8 for AE and 4 for other apps is what I had RMFS set to.

  • I have the current Mac Pro the entry level with the default specification and i feel some slow performance when applying after effects on my videos using final cut pro and also rendering a video takes long time ? what upgrades do you guys suggest?

i have the current Mac Pro the entry level with the default configuration   and i feel lack of  performance when applying after effects on my videos using final cut pro and also rendering a video takes long time ? what upgrades do you guys suggest i could do on my Mac Pro ?

256GB SSD  it shipped with will run low and one of the things to watch.
Default memory is 12GB  also something to think about.

  • "I've made a huge mistake." The laments of a new mac pro and ridiculously slow AE renders

I just purchased the late 2013 model of the Mac Pro with the following specs:
    Processor: 3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5
    Memory: 12 GB
    Graphics: AMD FirePro D700
It barely squeaks out a faster render than my early 2008 Mac Pro (which has the following specs):
Processor: 2 x 3.2 Ghz Quad Core Intel Xeon
    Memory: 16 GB
    Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
I obviously did NOT configure my new Mac Pro with the best features for AE CC.  I still have time to return the machine, and try again. I would appreciate advice from someone who can ID where I went wrong - and direct me toward a machine that will churn out faster renders. Thanks so much!

Sorry, I'm out of the loop on the newer chipsets so would have to defer to others in that respect.  There's a lot of reading to be done on multicore rendering in after effects; but you're best off running some test renders to see if its helping or hindering your comps and then base your decision for number of cores vs core speed on that.  Either way multicore rendering does require a lot of RAM. You should be getting OK render speeds if you're not using the ray trace renderer, certainly should beat out the old box, that might be something to look into.
I can't advise using those thunderbolt pcie chasis to add an nvidia card to the new mac pro trash can; the sonnet ones we bought have been finicky with our AJA cards and I can only imagine a full graphics card under load being worse performance wise.
I built my hack a few years back on an ivy bridge i7 with 32 GB of ram.  They have some newer guides for hardware choices and methods at http://www.tonymacx86.com/home.php
Although my build has been extremely stable, I will caution that putting together a hackintosh can be quite a pain even if you're an experienced system builder / knowledgable with *nix.  If Windows is an option that can be considered, I've heard good things about the HP Z series workstations but Quadro cards seem overpriced IMO compared to the Geforce series for the cuda cores / ram size (though purists will surely encourage you not to go the budget route).
