Slow mac...very slow

I have tried all the obvious things..disc repair, mac cleaner.. I did try to delate kodak easy share because I did recently install that and it told me it couldn't be delated due to kodak wireless listener is in use. Does anyone know how to find this and delete it? Also I have a shared file under shared but it is blank and I have no idea how it go there. How do I delete that as well? any other ideas to help with the speed? I can't even play a movie, it constantly gets hung.

1.
The first thing to do is check that your hard drive isn't too full. (I hope your nick doesn't mean that it is )
Highlight the "HD" icon on your desktop and then hit Command + I to get info.
In the information window that opens, check "Capacity" and "Used".
If "Used" comes to more than 80-85% of "Capacity" it's time to get rid of some stuff off your hard drive.
Identify big-ticket items like movies, music, etc. and remove them. If you still need them, save them to an external drive or burn them to a CD/DVD.
In order to function, your computer needs to create all kinds of temporary files and needs to move stuff around on your hard drive. If it can't find the space it needs, this will noticeably slow down your computer. In extreme cases it could crash your computer.
2.
"Kodak Wireless Listener" may be in your Startup (i.e. Log-in) Items.
To see these items open System Preferences--> Accounts-->your Account (whatever it's called)-->Login Items. If Kodak Wireless Listener is there, uncheck the box next to it or if you don't want it, remove it completely by clicking the "-" sign.
Then log out and log back in again.
See if any of this helps.

    Hello,
I have installed mountain lion on my macbook pro ,but it made my mac very slow. Would someone please tell me how  to uninstall this one and reinstall snow leopard? I tried to do it by my original CDs but macbook  pro didn't let me to do it.
    Thanks

It would be easier to just fix whatever is making your machine slow.
I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.
Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

Hi, likely somethiung else, but Free Sophos...
    http://www.sophos.com/products/enterprise/endpoint/security-and-control/mac/
Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Mac Very Slow to Start Up

My MacBook Pro has become very slow to run in the last few months, mostly since Yosemite installed.  My system boots up, then needs a log-in.  After log-in it takes about 20 minutes for the desktop to completely display.  The dock shows up, as does the desktop background, but the icons and the menu across the top of the screen take the longest to show up.
Apple Mail is also extremely slow to load up, as is iPhoto.  Mail is worst, taking about 20 minutes to show up with messages.
I have run disk utility several times both in the normal mode and also using Command + R and ran it from there.  No problems found.  A few items needed repair in Command + R, otherwise, no issues.  I ran both the Permissions sets and also the Repair disk.
I have several gigabytes of mail as well as iCloud files stored on my account.  Could this be part of the problem?  Also, around 150 GB of photos in the iPhoto library.
Advice on what to check and how to accomplish this would be very much appreciated.  Waiting for a good 20 minutes to initially use my MBP (2011) is becoming a real nuisance.  (Then several more minutes to use Apple Mail which does not start automatically, neither does iPhoto).
    Thank you!

Thanks for your reply.  It is very difficult to pick a portion of the log, but here is a section from late in the boot process which was begun at  4:33.  It takes 20 minutes to come up to full screen with dock, icons, etc. following a log-in.  I saved the file in a Word document in case you need more information.
Looking at the log I see references to apps which have been removed from the system.  How do I completely all references to these?

  • Mac very slow after hard drive repair and won't recognize scanner

All of my files were wiped out when I mistakenly turned on FireVault. I had it repaired at my Apple store. It worked fine for a while but in the past month or so it has become v e r y slow--I have to wait a full minute or two to open a Word doc! I don't know if it has anything to do with the repair. I did get a WD back-up after the repair--could that be slowing it down?
Last week I installed Snow Leopard and I hoped that might speed things up again but it hasn't. However, my computer no longer recognizes my HP scanner. I can print but I can't scan. (HP C6180 All-in-One)
    Any ideas? Thanks!

Thank you! I spoke with AppleCare who suggested I install the new iLife that came with the Snow Leopard bundle so I did that. I also downloaded the app. from the HP site you linked me to. I haven't actually tried to scan yet but it appears to have solved this issue.
My computer is still VERY slow. AppleCare suggested I remove some things from my Start Up and it seems to have improved the speed a little, however it still takes a long time to boot up, open apps., etc.
My Apple Care expires in less than a month. If it is my Hard Drive going, what do you think my chances are of getting a new (free) HD from Apple? I bought my iMac in Jan 2007.
    Thanks!

  • Illustrator CS3: Very Slow Open, Very Slow Save

    Hello all,
I just recently have been issues with Illustrator CS3. Up until about a few weeks ago, it had been running flawlessly. Now, whenever I try to open up any EPS or AI, Illustrator will literally take at least a minute to open it. This happens with a complex 2mb AI files, but also for a tiny simple files consisting of a 1" square on a blank artboard. No matter the file size, it will take around a minute to open it up.
    Opening a 44kb .eps: 75 seconds
    Opening a 210kb .ai file: 67 seconds
    Saving a 76kb .eps: 56 seconds
Export to grayscale PNG: 66 seconds
Export AI Layers to SWF Files: 2 seconds
    This is ridiculous.
Saving is the same issue. It takes a ridiculously long time to save even a blank document.
It's not my machine (2x2.66ghz Intel Mac with 5gb ram, OSX 10.5.6). Photoshop feels a little sluggish too, but not to this extent. InDesign, Flash, Dreamweaver, Acrobat all run perfectly. I even uninstalled all the CS3 products and reinstalled to find the same issues. And now that I've been given a time sensitive job, I need to get this program running quickly again.
I'm not sure what I can do to solve the problem, aside from trying to reinstall OSX and start fresh. Any and all help is appreciated! Thank you!

Well, I reinstalled Mac OS X before even trying those methods. It was less of a hassle than I thought it would be. Solved the problems with Illustrator. Everything is running fantastic.
But, I was just working in Photoshop, opening about ~20-30 small PNG's at a time to resize, grayscale, etc. I opened up about 60 at once to make things go quicker. They all opened up, with a little bit of lag. Now, if I even try to open up 10-15 PNG's at a time, they load very slow, like the problem I was having before with Illustrator...
Is there anyway to reset some memory settings? Or clear some cache? I believe this is what caused my issues with Illustrator before (opening too many files at once.)

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

    Hi there,
Yes I'm trying to install the whole of logic studio. I'm starting to wonder if the dvd drive is faulty?
    Thanks

  • Firefox Mac Very Slow

This has been happening from the past few iterations of Firefox (I'm on FF 18 at the moment, and I can recall it happening since at least Firefox 15.
Firefox is a HUGE HUGE resource hog. I have permanently switched to Chrome but still use Firefox for some private browsing (no, not for that, it's so I can log in to Tumblr / Gmail on alternate accounts and not have settings saved which annoys me)
Firefox has caused actual physical damage to my laptop - it continually thrashes my CPU on the easiest tasks such as switching tabs or scrolling past a GIF image on Tumblr. My CPU usage skyrockets to 99% and I've even seen it go to 127% which I didn't even think was possible.
The thing is, I have Chrome open with the following tabs:
    Hotmail, Facebook, Tumblr, Forums, 9GAG.
    And FF open with:
    Gmail, Tumblr.
If I load two identical pages on Tumblr, particularly if there is a video embedded, Firefox will bring my macbook to its knees, making switching windows a laborious process. Opening a new tab causes CPU hitching, so much so to the point where I can type a full address into the address bar, take both my hands off the keyboard and raise them up in the air before Firefox catches up and puts what I typed into the bar. Using CMD+1/2/3/4 etc to switch tabs takes about 3 seconds, on Chrome it is instant.
I have no addons installed on Firefox, no theme. Just adblock plus. No other extensions or plugins. Just stock FF and ABP. I have tried reinstalling and resetting Firefox to no avail. This is a problem with your browser that many others have reported.
I'm not the kind of douchebag who expects reimbursement but I'm pissed off that because of the thrashing of my CPU directly caused by FF, the following negative effects have taken place on my Laptop:
High temperatures in the 90c+ rating -
    - Causes the fan to spin much faster than it should, which:
    • Causes the bearings to wear out,
    • Makes the fan a lot louder than it should be over time,
    • Decreases the life of the fan.
    • Decreasing the life of the CPU
    • Has caused the glue on the feet to soften, the rear feet have now fallen off. If you think it is a coincidence, let me remind you that the CPU is at the rear of the laptop.
    • Lack of feet on rear of laptop have caused numerous scratches and scrapes.
The point is, Firefox, a browser, with two tabs open, one of them being a rarely-active email tab, is throttling my CPU to the extent that Final Cut Pro rendering would throttle my CPU.
I have had enough and decided to see if opera can fit my browsing needs. For the first time in a long time, I have closed down Firefox and, hey presto, my laptop fans have died down and the temperature of the CPU has receded to a normal 60c.
Fact of the matter is, Chrome is just an all round better browser. The only thing I miss from Firefox is using three fingers on the track pad to get to the top and bottom of pages quickly. Other than that I haven't looked back and have been enjoying a fast, smooth, heat and noise free browsing experience.
Nevertheless I would like to continue to use Firefox for my Private Browsing needs, unfortunately I will not be doing so until Mozilla takes a long, hard look at performance improvements to this most sluggish of browsers.
    Macbook Pro Mid 2010 model
    Mac OSX 10.6.7
Firefox 18 (and now that I've closed it, it'll be Firefox 19)
4GB RAM, 2.26GHz Dual Core CPU

I had the same problem and Googled it, and found your post and many others of the same style. I have found the solution. It was so easy. Go to Tools-Add-Ons to open the 'Add-Ons Manager' and remove any of your old extensions first. I removed five that were outdated.
Then go to Plugins and Disable all and everything here. You will be surprised how fast Firefox is after that. In addition, my Flash Player had to be updated.
When I see that I cannot view something and get a message that I need a plugin, I can enable that which I need. Also, I have a Macbook Pro just like you but it's 5 years old now and it has considerably slowed down since then. I can almost no more use iPhoto with my big photos from the Canon 5D. So part of this problem may also be your computer. Last not least, when you use Youtube often you don't want to miss Firefox because videos load so much faster than on Safari.

  • Bridge for mac - Very slow connect after installing sd card

    Hey guys,
after I installed a 32gb SD card,  the connection-procedure is really slow. The green bar fills in not 10sec but in 2 minutes now. What happened? Really the SD card? What can I do?
    Thanks!

    Hey guys,
I had to move the XperiaTransfer-Folder to my SD-card. Now, after I moved it, the date of 70% of the photos is the current date and nearly 900 images are dated for today. It's quite hard to navigate through the images now. How does the Sony Gallery app gather information? What can I do to fix it?
    Thanks

  • After mountain lion install mac very slow

After Mountain Lion install, my MacBookPro mid-2009 version is extremely slow. What could be causing it to slow down ?

There are a bunch of threads about this. Use the search function and see what others are finding out.

  • Recovering mac very slow internet

is there any way to speed up the 9 hours it takes to recover the os instead of downloading it with recovery drive

After you get it downloaded/installed. Redownload the the OSX via the Mac App Store>Purchases
Then Google for how to make a bootable verson to install on a USB drive.
I made one for ML but have not made one yet for Mavericks.

  • Slow system, very slow word and excel

    Hello there
Since I updated to 10.4.10 everything I do on my MBP seems to take a long time. To open a simple word or excel file takes about 15 seconds!!!
With 10.4.9 it was much faster
Any suggestions about speeding up the MBP?

Get Cocktail, run all the tasks on the Pilot tab once a week. Don't use any other tabs unless you know their meaning. Best maintenance app for newbies even though it costs a whopping $12 or $15.
Until Office for the Intel CPU comes out , the old Office for Macs are a little slow so wait (a complete waste of money upgrading just for faster opening, in my opinion even when it does come out) or at least try the above.

I am having problems with slowness, too - ever since installing the latest Yosemite update I downloaded a few days ago.  EVERYTHING - Safari, QuickTime, MS Word for Apple, the DVD Player, everything - runs slowly and I get the "rainbow pinwheel of frustration".  It's taken me three minutes to type these few sentences.  It's really starting to frustrate me.  Here is my EtreCheck report:
    Problem description:
Since I installed the latest Yosemite update (10.10.2), EVERYTHING runs slowly.  I get the rainbow pinwheel whenever I click on anything on Safari, and have trouble typing via Safari; videos stop and start on QuickTime; MS Word for Apple runs slowly - EVERYTHING seems to be slowed down.  It took four minutes to get the above sentences typed.  Please help me escape the “rainbow pinwheel of failure”!
