MacKeeper is a big source of CREATING problems, not solving them. Sorry that their scam got you. See Do not install MacKeeper.
Also try removing uTorrent and BitTorrent and see if there is an improvement. If you frequently download torrents, that's a good way to get malware. It might be worth downloading Sophos and having it do a scan: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-ed ition.aspx.

Slow Mac with recurrent spinning ball of doom
Please help,
My Mac has always been slow since I had it and migrated my PC content to my Mac. I have run EtreCheck and hope that this might illuminate the cause of my issues, but worry that it may not. ANYTHING I ask the Mac to do will be slow and inevitably cause a spinning ball for a while. I have kept the system up to date. I have a lot of photos in iPhoto but can't imagine this can be the cause?
Any help is much appreciated. The Etrecheck output is below:
Many thanks.

Diagnostics Information: ℹ️
Jan 16, 2015, 01:20:19 PM /Users/[redacted]/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Finder_2015-01-16-132019_[reda cted].crash1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be a series of messages in the Terminal window like this:
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The messages won't be spaced equally apart in time, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the last message you saw. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

MacBook 2009 Slow with Mavericks - Help Needed with EtreCheck Report
I just completed my upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks last week. I finished applying all of the software updates after the initial install of Mavericks. The only problem is that my computer is running a lot slower than before. This seems to be common for 2009 MacBooks, so I ran EtreCheck but am not sure what else I can do to improve my performance. Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You need to have CrashPlan run while you are away from Mac for extended periods of time.
Update all of your Web browser Internet extensions and plugins, also.
Especially, make sure your Telestream Flip4Mac video plugin is updated to its latest version.
There have been user reports of issues with earlier versions of Flip4Mac plugin and Mavericks.
Also, if you have any connected, third party devices, like non-Apple keyboards, mice, drawing tablets, hubs, card readers, etc, you need to go to each device makers' websites to update the drivers for these devices to OS X Mavericks compatible versions, if available and applicable. -

Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549) - Time since boot: 31 days 7:16:27
Computers can run for months on end if they are setup for that (e.g. a server) simply rebooting a laptop will help to flush any RAM that has been leaked & clear out old temporary files etc. It may make it run better.
Your hard disk is a spinning disk - if you want better performance upgrade to a SSD for better read & write times (the whole OS should run quicker).
More RAM could help too, you can upgrade to 16GB if you want to do so.

Slow Macbook pro - etrecheck report
Hi,
My macbook pro is slowing down. I download torrents, think this may have caused it.
As suggested in some other forums I ran etrecheck and the report here as follows. Any help to improve the speed is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode.
PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1269 ' 0.5 0.25 10 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 1 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1 350 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144 20 2000 Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
[Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
Please close this window.
[Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal.
They speak only for themselves, and I may not agree with them.

Hi, I'm having a lot of trouble with my Mac stalling, pinwheeling, applications not responding etc.
It was getting worse prior to recently installing Yosemite (from Mavericks). After installing Yosemite is came to an almost complete standstill. After implementing steps 1-6 from High Tech Dad http://www.hightechdad.com/2014/10/23/13-tips-optimize-mac-yosemite-installation / it improved significantly, but is still slow and stalling at times. Can anybody offer further help?
Thanks

Large online photo files cause slow Mac with spinning color wheel
My Mac Mini has been gradually getting slower to launch apps, any app, and now usually includes 15-30 seconds of spinning color wheel. Sometimes I get the wheel and delays while browsing. Finder windows populate slowly with file icons/names.
This behavior seems to have started, and gradually increased, since upgrading to 10.6 about 8 months ago but it also seems to be related to viewing large photo files online, since Snow Leopard.
One repeatable problem is viewing a large 2 or 3mb photo file online. I notice in Activity Monitor that Safari (both 4 and now 5 at 64bit) will dramatically increase the Real and Virtual Memory used, and not decrease even after the browser window is closed. In a few minutes the User CPU % will max out (at about 75% while System uses 25%) and the Mac while freeze for several minutes (Safari not responding) until CPU usage goes back to normal, but the Mac will be so sluggish then that I have to restart. I usually Force Quit Safari.
I have Repaired Permissions (1000s of Airport Utility were repaired but the JavaVM permissions report fixed but are on the list of repairs again a few minutes later) with Disk Utility and Cocktail, scanned with VirusBarrier X6, monitored network connections for months using Little Snitch and usually leave open Activity Monitor for checking out the action. I have read a lot of support docs and forums but I can't find the problem.
Any idea how to rid myself of this bizarre behavior?start with http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/sbbod.html

I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro. I recently updated to Lion, and now it's running slow. Keep getting pinwheel and only running a few apps like Safari and iPhoto at once. Should I go back to Snow Leopard and how do I do that?
Thank you! I've to check it, if I'm back at home.
As already described at the following thread from gmka (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4324046?start=60&tstart=0) , I think it's necessary to enable Spotlight again after installing the supplemental update. Is that correct? -

Your partitions are also messed up.
I'm guessing here you have "Untitled" as a OS X boot volume and your user data on "My Mac"?
If you keep everything on one partition and all data (users, programs OS X) on the first 50% of the hard drive, it will perform at it's best virtually forever, or until the machine dies of hardware failure.
It's rather easy to defrag once or twice in the life of the machine using the method I have outlined here.
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
Since you might have software and bad sector issues, I suggest you backup user files off the machine (not to TimeMachine, to a regular storage drive) and then (more RAM of course)
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
and do this + fresh install for optimal Snow Leopard speed on that machine. (ditch the extra partition)
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
For Snow Leopard Speed Freaks
Make sure to use the Disk Utility > Erase with Security > Zero all Data on the hard drive (2 times best), this will map off many bad sectors that are there or have occured due to shock damage and will slow read performance.

My Snow Leopard machine is incredibly fast, even faster than many Macs with later (bloated) OS X versions.
It's because Snow was written to be fast on older 32 bit processors, so it screams on more recent machines. -
I am having trouble with my Mac Book Pro which I bought in August 2012. It has suddenly started running very slowly every time I try to poen something. I have completed an etrecheck report - can anyone help?

EtreCheck report for slow Mac.
Hi. Like so many I experience frequent crashes (well, not me personally – my computer!) on my 2011 iMac since installing Maverick. Safari, Mail, but especially Pages, all crash. Worst of all, things have got much slower. I still have 222 of 500 GB of hard drive available. I see from others' questions that I should get an EtreCheck report. Here is the result. I'd be very glad if someone can spot a problem that might be slowing things down. I have the same problems with my MacBook. I'll do the same with that later. Many thanks.
Yep, I haven't configured Time Machine yet, since my only external hard drive is being used with my MacBook.

MacKeeper
AppCleaner
ShinySoft
All must be removed.
Given the extent to which that Mac has been corrupted by those programs and for other reasons that follow below, I strongly recommend that it be completely erased and reconfigured from the ground up. Please write back for instructions should you decide to to that.
Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components. Never install such junk on a Mac.
If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.
If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.
I recommend you uninstall Shiny Soap Agent. It appears to be a remote access tool (RAT).
You may have legitimate reasons for having installed remote access software developed by a company in Slovakia, but any remote access tool can easily be used for nefarious purposes.
http://shinysoap.com/remote-support
Shiny Soft's relationship to Teamviewer seems questionable to me, and their command of conventional English spelling does little to inspire confidence in a tool that can be used to remotely control a Mac:
If you were not aware that such software was installed, I recommend nothing less than completely erasing your Mac to ensure it has not been altered in a malicious manner.
You should avoid all utilities that make absurd claims such as "clean your Mac with a click":
They are all scams, in one form or another. If you're fortunate, all you will lose is the money and time you invested in using such garbage.
May I suggest that you review the following setting in System Preferences?
Although you may easily override that setting, it will serve to protect you from inadvertently installing garbage. The overwhelming majority of Macs I come across have the MacKeeper installer file already present in their Downloads folder, often multiple copies of it. The downloaded file itself can do nothing until it is opened and installed, and the above setting (known as Gatekeeper - not to be confused with MacKeeper) will prevent that from occurring.
Use caution when playing Minecraft. Scam artists often use promises of enhanced game privileges to gull users into installing remote access software. That alone might explain the presence of Shiny Soap.
When discussing any Mac related concern you should purge the word "clean" from your lexicon. It's misleading in that it implies neglecting a Mac will cause it to somehow become "unclean", and after all who wants a filthy Mac. The emotional connotation results in many Mac users represented on this site relating tales of misery after using garbage "cleaning" apps. Avoid them as you would a social disease. -
Problem started after I unintentionally downloaded some adware 4 days ago. After lots of aggressive ads slowed down my browser I downloaded and ran AdwareMedic which seemed to do the job and browser was back to normal. Then, possibly a coincidence, everything on the computer started running slower. I've backed up everything and have run a EtreCheck report.
When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
