Slow macbook dragging files

My macbook pro os x 10.9.5 is slow just dragging items into folders. it is occasionally slow moving items to trash. would re installing a different version or the same version again fix this problem because over time it has become annoying. i have pictures of all my memory and processing attached below can you tell me if there is anything standing out or 3rd party items pleaseeee

Probably, as well as chat support, though not all of them are available all day every day.
There are a number of ways to contact AppleCare, all of them are provided in the Contact Us link. They are different contact means for different countries which is the reason I don't suggest anything more specific than that.
As far as I know, if you are in the United States, and you contact AppleCare by phone, there will be an option to have them call you back at a time that's convenient for you. There should be no need for you to to wait on hold at all.

  • My Time Capsule will not work through Time Machine but need to back up because my hard drive is corrupt. I hard-wired it to my MacBook Pro and have been dragging files to capsule in finder window. Will I have problems since it's flashing yellow constantly

My Time Capsule is constantly flashing yellow and it will not preform periodic back-ups. When I tell it to from the icon on the top task bar, it freezes MacBook...every time. I am now dragging files from internal HD to TC found in Finder after hardwiring it to laptop treating it as an external HD.  Can in trust it to store files and photos as my MacBook is telling me to back-up because my internal HD is corrupt and may need replacing?
    Thanks in advance.

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

  • How can I drag files from my macbook to my external hard drive?

Hi! I can't seem to drag files to my hard drive using my macbook pro? How can I do that?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
What happens when you try to drag a file to the external drive? If it just doesn't copy, it's because the external drive is formatted in NTFS, and OS X can't write in NTFS hard drives. There are some solutions:
    1. Buy a third-party application like Paragon NTFS, which will allow you to write in your external drive.
    2. Format the external drive with exFAT or FAT32, so you will be able to use the external drive with PCs and Macs.
If you choose the last one, copy all the data from the external drive to a Mac or PC before erasing the disk. I recommend you to use exFAT because it hasn't got the limitation of files bigger than 4 GB, so you have to format the external drive on a PC. That's because, if you do it in the Mac, PCs won't recognize it

  • Updated to latest operating system on MacBook Pro and now won't let me drag files onto a flash drive.

Updated to latest operating system OS X Mavericks on MacBook Pro and now won't let me drag files onto a flash drive.

The Flash Disk must be NTSF formatted. Writing to NTFS requires 3rd party drivers (Tuxera, Paragon). Reading from NTFS however does not require these. So install NTFS drivers, or format the drive in FAT32 from Disk Utility.
    Hope this helps :-)

  • Dragging files to a DVD is very slow

Since a couple of months dragging files to a DVD player takes minutes.
I'm not talking about the burning process but just about dragging files from my harddrive to my dvd folder. This used to be a matter of seconds but since a while (I believe since the mavericks update) once I drop a couple of hundred files on my dvd I get a spinning wheel and it takes minutes until it stops and the files are in the folder.
    I'm running OS 10.9.1 on a 2009 2.66 quad core Mac Pro with 16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 and got a HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GH41N
Any Idea what can be causing this problem?

More than 50 files spread out at one level makes the Finder slow. Put those same files inside a folder, and drag and drop the folder,  and things usually speed right up.

  • I can't manually drag files to/from my external hard drive to my macbook air!

My laptop is running on 10.9.4 (freshly installed, quite literally two days ago).
I have all permissions to read and write on my hard drive, and it is formatted in MS-DOS (FAT32). It worked yesterday when I moved music on the laptop but now when I try to move other files (even within the hard drive itself) I can't. Help please! The only way I can move anything to and from the hard drive is to copy-paste is but I cannot manually drag anything.

Can you drag files to or from any folder?

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
    Uninstall "Sophos": http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/120838.aspx
    Uninstall "MacKeeper". Read below.
Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 required more extensive work to uninstall all its components.
If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.
If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.
what does this mean?:   Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemite
The message is merely informative. If there is anything to be inferred from it, it's that the programs shown have not been updated by you or their developer.
The items shown are not doing anything.
        MacUpdate Desktop
You don't need that garbage either. Always obtain software from legitimate sources.
    "MacFUSE" is outdated.
        /etc/hosts - Count: 1
If you have no explanation for that modification, read Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file.
    Battery: Health = Replace Soon
    Do that too: https://www.apple.com/batteries/service-and-recycling/
You inadvertently installed adware. You do not need to download or install anything to fix it.
For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware. Apple's instructions are linked in the Recovery Procedure near the end of that document. Read and follow them carefully. Pay particular attention to the easily overlooked passages directing you to restart your Mac when required.
    Lastly, you are using Google:
Google products including Google Chrome and Google Drive will burden any Mac regardless of its age or configuration. It litters a Mac with a plethora of root level system modifications in the same manner as a virus would, if such a thing were to exist, which it doesn't.
Google derives essentially all its revenue from advertising. Their products are "free" because you are the product Google sells.
Google Chrome was designed for the sole purpose of harvesting your personal information.
If Safari does not meet your requirements, I suggest Firefox. Unlike Chrome, Firefox does not alter a Mac's operating system, does not demand full-time root access for purposes known only to it, is not designed to harvest your personal information, and is not known to cause the degraded performance that Google Chrome is notorious for causing.
If you require Chrome and expect acceptable performance from your hardware, expect the need to replace it with newer hardware frequently.
Fix those problems by not using Google.

  • Finder crashes when I try dragging files in Yosemite

Upgraded to Yosemite (OS X 10.10) and am having trouble with Finder — when I try dragging files into new windows or documents the Finder window disappears and then reappears, sometimes in a previous window, authorities not. I searched and saw people are experiencing a Finder crash loop, but this isn't that. After the initial crash I can drag my files ok, at least until I use a different application, after which Finder will again crash when attempting to drag and drop. Any idea what's happening or what I can do? Thanks
    MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), OS X 10.10
    2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Slow Macbook Pro- please help, I don't understand previous advice.

    Hello all,
I have a very slow Macbook Pro running on Lion 10.7.3.
I looked up this problem on the forums before I sent this message but I didn't quite understand the advice. I have been on something called Disk Utility and Activity Monitor but don't really understand what I'm looking for. It seems a large percentage of my mac is 'idle' if that makes sense. Someone said to look at Page Out but I really don't understand what that means and what sort of numbers are normal.
I do have some storage left so I don't think it could be that. A lot of my gigabytes seem to be taken up by movies and 'other'. I've tried deleted a load of videos but it hardly made a difference. I have Mac Mail and it seems very slow on my Macbook compared to on my Ipad and iphone. iCal is also very slow on here and it always takes a while to load internet pages. It isnt the wifi connection.
Please help and bear in mind I am by no means a Mac whizz so you might have to talk in layman's terms!
    Thanks,
    Amy

If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
    Select the CPU tab.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
Launch the Console application in the same way as above, and select “kernel.log” from the file list. Post the dozen or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message.

You have only about 10 percent free drive space left. 50gB is enough to run the computer but, if it gets much smaller, that can slow how Virtual Memory (VM) works as the system has to more carefully search the remaining space for qualified blocks to which to write data.
Adding RAM will reduce the writes-to-disk by VM but you should probably consider a little holiday disk cleaning of stuff you no longer use.
    This concerns me:

That is a LOT of log-in items for a compute with 4GB RAM. Some are hard to avoid but Excel is a big program that can be easily launched from the Dock. I don't know what "Inspiration 8" is but likely the same advice will apply.

  • Can't drag files from itunes library (to anywhere) anymore.

Recently I've noticed I can no longer drag files from the library in my itunes. I can't drag them to playlists, and I can't drag them to the desktop.
I have repaired permissions and even tried removing the library.xml file and let it generate a new one, but I still get the same result.
I am on a mac os 10.6.8 Macbook Pro.
I'm not sure when ths started happening, but I wonder if it has something to do with an itunes update. I have the newest version and always dwnload the updates. I can still add files to the library by control-clicking the files and selecting the option in the dropdown list. This isn't an intentional change in the way the program works is it? Is no one else having this problem??

Iphone will sync or manually manage with one and only one computer at a time.
Syncing or manually managing to another will indeed erase the current content and replace with the content from the new computer.

  • Can't drag files from stacks to trash in 10.6.7

I have two stacks on my dock, downloads and documents. On my desktop (an Early 2009 model iMac), I have no problem opening a stack ("fan" view) and dragging a file from the stack to the trash. However, on my Early 2006 MacBook, I'm unable to do this. I was able to do it with 10.5.8, but I just upgraded it to 10.6, and then to 10.6.7 a few days ago, and now I can't.
I can still drag files to trash if I open the Documents or Downloads folder in Finder, just not directly from the stack, so it's just an inconvenience at worst, but if someone could help me fix this, I'd really appreciate it. I can provide more information if needed, but I'm not sure what would be useful.

I never even knew you could do that! Just tested it on my 10.6.7 machine, though, and it worked fine. I don't have a solution for you - I suppose you could try deleting the Dock preferences (com.apple.dock.plist) and reboot - but wanted to let you know it's not a problem in 10.6.7 so you can at least take a stab at tracking down and fixing the problem.

  • Can't drag files or folders.

I have just recently bought a Macbook Pro running Lion OS X 10.7.2.
I have been transferring folders within my 1T external using my mac. I was draging folders and files fine until suddenly one file had a blue highlight. It would not go away unless I deleted the file. When I did that, the blue highlight went to the next file. As soon as the blue highlight problem occurred, I was and am still unable to drag files or folders at all. This problem does not only occur in the external hard drive but throughout my mac.
This is the first mac I've had before, so im curious as to whether it's a simple problem such as me accidentily locking it somehow.
I have tried restarting the computer (which worked the first time only) and also checked and repaired the permissions for all users and the problem is still occuring.
I hope this is enough information to explain the problem I am having.
    -David.

Does the DVD-R have a very long name? If so, see:
*Unable to copy or move files from volume that has a long name*
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2053
If this seems to be the problem you'd probably have to try burning a new DVD with a shorter name, since you can't rename the present DVD.

  • Slow Macbook pro. Can anyone help please?

    Hi Everyone.
This is my first time here, so please go easy on me.
I have a slow Macbook Pro. No idea why so I googled it and google suggested I get these details via Etresoft.
Can anyone suggest why this machine is so slow after seeing this?
    Cheers
