Slow Macbook Pro After Mavericks Upgrade

I have a mid 2010 mbp 15" 2.66 GHz Core i7
Before I upgrade to Mavericks I had Mountain Lion, and the computer was rebooting randomly, so Apple gave me 3 years extended warranty and they replace the mother board.
Then, I upgrade to Mavericks and after that all the apps in the mbp feel like sluggish. Now to open any program takes a lot more time to start than before and apps crashes all the time.
In the other side, the mpb began to have display distortion problems (see the picture below) and is very slow to do any task.
The last thing I did was formatting and reinstalling mavericks and it is a little faster now, any way, the distortion problems continues and when I compared the speed with my best friend's macbook air, I realises that his, is very faster than mine which its higher technical specs  .

  • CS4 Install DVD does not mount on Macbook Pro after Maverick upgrade

I upgraded a Macbook Pro to Maverick from Snow Leopard. I want to install CS4 but when I put the DVD in the Superdrive, it spins and spins and eventually says that the DVD is blank. I have successfully mounted other DVD's so I don't think it is a drive problem. I have also tried the DVD in a newer model Macbook Pro and it mounts successfully. Does anyone have any idea what is causing the problem. More important, is there a different method I can use to install CS4?

I am not saying that the CS4 applications will not work but Adobe has never tested All CS4 applications on MAC Maverick. It might or might not work.

But yes if that works, its good. I just wanted to keep you updated in case in future if the application gives you any issue with the performance.

  • One more slower MacBook Pro after Yosemite upgrade

    Hello,
I noticed on queries like that of GreenVal1984 that it helps to have a EtreCheck report pasted.  Because my MacBookPro - especially Apple Mail, iCal, and Spotlight within the Finder - has slowed down since I have upgraded to Yosemite, here is the system report.  I ran AdwareMedic and got nothing, but not sure what "mds stores" is which may be using energy. Any way you can help me declutter the energy use or find what is slowing it will be most appreciated!
    Problem description:
Since installing Yosemite, my MacBook Pro has significantly slowed down, especially Apple Mail.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

That is because that sync ability (for contacts and calendars) has been removed. Use iCloud instead.

  • "Error Disk too Slow" Macbook Pro 2011 - Maverick and Yosemite - The Great Grand Mystery Unfolds!!!

    Hey everybody,
Logic Pro X user here, have a late 2011 Macbook Pro, upgraded to 16gb of ram, 2.8ghz intel core i7, running latest version of Mavericks and more recently on a separate partition I tried Yosemite with a  clean install of only Logic Pro X.
I use Apogee Quartet as my audio interface, I have a OWC Mercury Elite Firewire 800 external drive that I record to, all LPX files are on my internal drive.
Before Mavericks I had 0 issues with this setup, no with just one sole drummer track, or one single audio or software track, I get the various disk too slow errors after a few seconds.
I have tried reinstalling LPX, I tried a clean partition with nothing but Logic Pro on it (both Mavericks and Yosemite).
I have reset my PRAM and used Apple Hardware diagnostics as well as memtest (i think it was called) and even reverted back to my old original RAM that came with the computer.  All hardware tests passed, I have verified and repaired disks from disk utility as well as from the recovery partition.
I have worked with Apple a bit over the phone doing these things, I have also read just about every thread on this pervasive issue.  And its ruining my experience as a user.  I absolutely loved Logic on Mountain Lion, no issues whatsoever! I'm considering reverting back to it actually.
On a side note I also have a HDMI Tv connected through the thunderbolt display, and a self powered USB hub that I connect my wireless mouse, iPhone cable and WD MY passport drive (which I only use for Time Machine).
I'm basically at my wits end and open to anybodies suggestions, I even tried resting the SMC and several other things advised in these forums.
I'm Stil under Apple Care and wondering if going into them is my only hope left.
I find that garageband acts the same, but I have no other system issues! its so bizarre, performance on all other programs is totally fine, its only when I want to record that I get issues.
For the record I do have some 3rd party VTS (Arturia V collection, EZ drummer 2 and AMplitube) but when I did the clean partition they weren't there and I still had the disk to slow error, so I'm not convinced its because of those.
Also Since the partition I obviously have played with my storage but I still have 75 gas of space on the mavericks partition (out of 500gb ) and on Yosemite partition I have 125 gbs available and on my Firewire external drive I have about 150gb left on a 500gb drive, so I'm not convinced its a space issue either (especially since before Mavericks Mountain Lion seemed to work just fine.)
HELP! Please help...I'm so exhausted trying to fix this on my own, and admittedly I've run to the end of my own capacity and don't know where to go from here.
Thank you for any suggestions, sorry for the long post, and if I have left anything out please let me know, this is my first post.

And yes I did upgrade my apogee drivers to the recent ones they just released.

  • Quirky Macbook Pro After Memory upgrade and big movie project

    Hi all,
Last December I made a movie for a class project with imovie. I noticed that the processor temp got up to 180-190 degrees for long periods of time (I use Intel's CoreDuo Temp reader to tell). Ever since then my MBP has been real flaky and weird. I wonder if I burnt the chip or something. Here are some of the issues
Applications crashing (Apple and 3rd party)
hard time finishing big tasks (i.e. they start but then crash towards the end)
major slow downs at odd times
    Overall loss of performance
    Beachball for no reason
    WILL NOT ARCHIVE!!!
WILL NOT TRANSFER BIG FILES TO EXTERNAL HD!!!
(those two are big to me)
I found a great app called fancontrol 1.1 and since then my temps have been down. wish I knew about it before my project. It's as if I can't trust this thing with anything more than surfing the net. Even that has been messed up lately.
I recently bought an extra gig of memory (I used 667 mhz ddr2 sdram bumping it to 2gb total) and that made things worse. Apps and performance are a little more unstable. I then completely wiped the hard drive and reinstalled the OS and all the updates and it still runs noticably slower than when I first got it. Stability got better but not at the level I would expect with 2gb of ram. I barely made it through making a movie yesterday. Had a crash at end of burning the DVD and had to re-render everything.
My biggest fear is that since I have one of the first Macbook Pros (I was one of the waitlist people) that I am screwed out of my warranty. I think it expires sometime this month. I use this thing everyday and I can't afford to upgrade. I'm pretty savy with macs and I've done about everything I can. Any advice or insight will be much apreciated.
    MacBook Pro 1.83 ghz 2gb Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Among other things: Have you performed the firmware updates required for your particular model?
Have you run diagnostics? Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One and after the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests several times.
Check that you have properly installed the added RAM. It's quite easy to insert it improperly. Remove the new RAM module to see if the problems cease. If they do you have a defective module.
Under heavy load it's not uncommon for the CPU core temperature to reach 83-85 ºC. Normal idle temperature may range between 40-45 ºC.
Otherwise, take the computer to an Apple service center for service.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.

  • Lost built-in camera on Macbook Pro after Mavericks update.

I'm about a year into owning a Mac so still learning a lot about navigating the system. I recently (Feb 28, 2014) "upgraded" from Mountain Lion to Mavericks and have now lost acessibility to the built-in camera. It shows up on facetime and photobooth, but not in image capture. In Skype it works briefly before turning off and requires a computer restart to turn on but then only works briefly before turning off again. I am unable to find it in system preferences anymore so can't check settings. Is there a way to restore previous settings?
    MacBook Pro, 15in, Mid 2012
Current operating system: OS X 10.9.2
    2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

The built-in camera shouldn't work in Image Capture which is for use with a photographic camera or a scanner. As for Skype you might check if you have the most recent version. If you do, then I would contact the developers about the problem. It's clear that the camera is working with Photo Booth and FaceTime. That suggests there is no problem with Mavericks.

  • Safari and iPhoto judder when scrolling on MacBook Pro after maverick update. Anyone else having this problem?

Is anyone else having this issue? How can I solve it?

  • Bluetooth issues on Mac Pro after Mavericks upgrade

I have a 2010 Mac Pro and I currently use a Logitech DiNovo for mac keyboard and the Apple Trackpad.  They were both working perfectly fine before upgrading to Mavericks.
After the upgrade, I started experiencing latency issues in which both the keyboard and the trackpad would stop responding (not disconnecting).  I have already reseted the PRAM and SMC.  If anyone has any suggestions as on how to resolve this issue feel free to leave them here.
    Thanks!

I just found another post from another user that has the same setup as I have (DiNovo & Apple Trackpad).  In this post they inidicate that the issue is being caused by the logitech software (Logitech LLC) even by version 3.8 which indicates Mavericks support.  After removing the logitech software I have not seen the issue again.  Below you will find the link.

after purchasing two 2 GB memory modules of the proper type for your model MacBook Pro (one example can be found here), you can follow the instructions in the little white printed booklet which originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro for replacing the modules.

  • Display Profile No Longer recognized in Final Cut Pro After Mavericks Upgrade

I have a 27" 3.4 GHz I7 imac. and an Apple 30" Cinema Display  After the Mavericks upgrade my viewer window suddenly has completely crushed blacks and is extremely dark.  Projects previously exported out look perfect in both Quicktime and Preview. I can export a project and it looks fine, just terrible in FCP.  It seems that it is related to my calibrated display profiles.  FCP will not recognize them now under Mavericks and worked fine with Lion.  Switching to the generic imac or cinema display profile will hold after the change and make the viewer look normal.  I downloaded FCP 10.1 didn't fix it.  Any ideas why this is happening now?

After researching this quite a bit and seeing this Very very dark video in FCP X viewer. I was able to fix the problem by building a matrix based profile. This problem dated back to the first FCP release for some, but I never experienced it until updating to Mavericks.  It seems that Mavericks is the problem, since nothing changed with FCP. I read somewhere else that another color calibration software tool was having an issue that Maverick's broke LUT (Look Up Table's}  I'm surprised that I am not seeing more photographer's/videographers with this issue. It may just be that those that are using calibration don't have softaware that builds LUT profiles by default.

  • Optical drive won't burn: Macbook Pro after Mavericks update

I have just updated my OSX to Mavericks on my Macbook Pro, late I know but I was trying to avoid any software conflicts.  My Optical Drive can't burn either CD or DVD.  It plays them and recognises them but won't burn. Error message:
The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.
I have tried compressed air, restarting, updating software and have looked through this forum for possible solutions but everything I've tried hasn't worked.
I burnt a DVD yesterday with no issue and then updated my OSX last night and know it won't work.
Please help, on the verge of a meltdown with a heavy deadline looming

The built-in camera shouldn't work in Image Capture which is for use with a photographic camera or a scanner. As for Skype you might check if you have the most recent version. If you do, then I would contact the developers about the problem. It's clear that the camera is working with Photo Booth and FaceTime. That suggests there is no problem with Mavericks.

  • Slow internet access after Mavericks upgrade

I have been experiencing very slow internet access since I upgraded to Maverics OS.
The Wifi connection is unstable.  Sometimes it looses connection.  I did not have this problem before.
Is this a problem experienced by others?  Do you have any steps on how you got this resolved?

what is the model of your wireless adapter?

  • Basic Apple applications won't open on Mac Pro after Mavericks upgrade

    Hi,
I'm having issues opening a number of basic applications including Quicktime and Itunes
Through the App store I have updated everything, the last one I was holding out on was updating Itunes. I did that last night and now today Itunes won't open.
I click the image in the dock, the icon briefly bounces upward and then after bouncing down does not open or display any kind of error message.
I am running a 2008 Mac Pro w/ 2x2.8ghz quad-core, 10gb of RAM, these issues began after updating to Mavericks.
Many other apps including FCPX, Adobe Premiere CC, VLC, App Store, are all working fine.
It seems to be an issue with just basic Apple software - please help!

Thanks for the suggestions... tried changing resolution and that had no effect, and I've checked my Perian and DivX installations in System Preferences and both say they are completely up to date. I upgraded Quicktime today to 7.5 before all of this became a problem -- but I don't know how to upgrade iLife. In Software Update everything is completely up to date (eg each of the iLife apps).
Oh well, iMovie is not very useful to me anyway -- just somehow annoying that it fails to work. No point flogging a dead horse!!
Any other ideas gratefully received... many thanks in advance

  • I can't open email links on my macbook pro after recent upgrade

Has anybody else had this problem and successfully resolved it. I have tried deleting all website data in case it was a problem with cookies, but it hasn't resolved the matter. Any help would be much appreciated.

Oops sorry! I found the answer on another forum site. Have no idea why but safari was no longer selected as my default browser, it was set to Google Chrome  so when I changed it back all works well. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
