SLOW macbook white - exposé, dock, dashboard, everything!

I've always been wondering why my mac gets relatively slower than I expected. It has 512 MB of ram, and recently I've been thinking whether I should get a 1 GB chip to replace one of my built-in 256's.
I've read these claims from apple that it's supposed to run like 5x faster than the ibook or powerbook. But I have this feeling that my friend's older powerbook runs even faster on the same amount of ram. I'm the type of person who likes opening a large number of programs at the same time, and that just doesn't work with my macbook right now.
I especially hate how the dock's magnification feature gets too slow sometimes. Exposé and the dashboard also work slower than usual at times. Another major problem is Microsoft Office, which I understand is still running under Rosetta. I've also tried using Adobe CS2, but it was simply impossible so I had to uninstall it. Right now I'm using Chocoflop, a universal freeware version of photoshop.
Do you think upgrading to 1.25 GB would solve all of these problems? It will cost me a lot, so I'd like to try out any other possibilities for now.
Macbook White Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Ditto!!
The reason I bought a macbook in the first place was because everyone who owns a mac raves about the speed and ease of use and the fact that you can open lots of programs and keep them open.
This macbook has slowed down, frozen, restarted and generally caused me more frustration and hasel in the 2 weeks that I have owned it than my poor quality Dell laptop ever did.
A waste of money buying the mac??? I really hope not!
It makes me extremely grumpy to think that I now need to spend extra money to upgrade a brand new product only to get it to run like it should!
Boo!!

  • Scroll lag/high scroll latency (not slow or jerky) MacBook White Early 2009 (MacBook 5,2)

I'm having a strange problem that's not easy to explain. It will probably take one or two reads!
I have two Macs, one has the problem, the other does not:
    2009 MacBook White 2GHz Core 2 Duo - 8GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - NVIDIA 9400M 256MB Dedicated - OS X Lion (HAS PROBLEM)
    2009 Mac Mini 2GHz Core 2 Duo - 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - Intel GMA 950 64MB Shared - OS X Lion (DOES NOT HAVE PROBLEM)
The problem is with scrolling with a mouse wheel or trackpad in various apps, iTunes in Album List display mode is the example I'll use.
I have the same iTunes library with around 4,500 tracks on BOTH Macs.
When I scroll the list initially everything is fine but with repeated consecutive scrolling actions either in the same direction or alternating (with any mouse wheel, magic mouse, built in trackpad or magic trackpad) the response slowly gets further and further behind the physical action to the point where I will stop the physical scrolling action and iTunes continues to scroll mimicing my previous actions (including any slowing, speeding up and direction changes) for 5 seconds or more until it catches up. It's NOT jerky, it just starts to lag behind.
The strange thing is that if I open another app (like Terminal), move it completely out of the way so that the entire iTunes window is visible but the other window still has focus and then scroll the iTunes window without it in focus there is no delay at all and the responses map the physical scroll actions 1 to 1.
I did have MagicPrefs installed but have uninstalled it. I've tried shutting all apps asside from iTunes and it makes no difference. I've tried an SMC reset, no joy. There are no repeating messages in console.
Any ideas? It's bugging me a lot.
    Thanks!
    Marc Roberts

Compare what's going on in Activity monitor (Applications > Utilities > Activity.monitor.app) when you are getting the delay and when you scroll withoud delay with a different input window selected.
Do the same with your mac that doesn't have the problem, and see if there's any obvious differences. Post back here any processes that are consuming a lot of CPU time, and the page in/outs/swaps.

  • I have a MacBook White.  Everything worked great with Snow Leopard including Mathematica, and all Pogo games. I downloaded Lion two days ago and now neither program works.  The box states that I need J/Link, and/or java runtime.  Help.

I have a MacBook White, early 2009 model, just downloaded/installed OS X Lion.  Everything worked well with Snow Leopard - Mathematica, pogo.com games. Now, with Lion, I am getting a box that states I need J/Link, and/or java runtime.  Software update feature states all software is up to date.  Help.

What about the incredable lag time from clicking on a program to the time it opens (or the time till the loading screen starts)? I wish I could record it and play it so I could see if thats normal from other members... the icon just sitting there for over 35 second (I just counted 36 till the loading screen popped up) at first I thought it was me not clicking hard enought cuz the mouse button I have is real stiff (any ideas on that?) but no it takes that long just to get to the app loading screen... this happens every time same amount of time with the 3 programs I use the most, prolly more but I know for a fact world of warcraft, uTorrent, and Google Chrome. I would just chalk it up to slow hardware but they load real quick in windows 7 and once this bad spot is loaded the program runs so fast and nice afterword. Maybe some tweeks? I wonder if this would happen in Snow?
The coment "few outdated programs" Ive seen alot its not just a few its a lot and since games are not Apple's strong point I would think they would want to keep as many as they could...
An example of the rants you will see from a lot here. Don't be put off as these problems are generally user specific, and these same old comments come out after the release of every OSX I can remember. When Lion is upgraded  to the next OSX you can gaurentee these forums will be full of people screaming about how great Lion was. Happened with Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard.
So come to think of it you may be better off Googling sites that give you unbiased views on Lion, rather than expect any positive comments here. For every one complaint there are probably 100,000 people with no issues.
    Cheers

You do realise that wiping the disk means that everything on the disk is erased. Everything. Photos, music, emails, ...
So the first piece of advice is to make sure you have a back up of everything.
You need the OS disk to reintsall the operating system. You will use that disk first to erase the drive, then to reinstall the OS.
Here's the link for the US.  http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
As for MS Office, you will need the original disk that it came on to reinstall it.

  • My sister's MacBook white is running slow lately

My older sister got her laptop back in 2012, and its ran like a champ since then, i even updated it from OS X 10.6.8 to OS X 10.7.5 and it ran even better!
but lately, it's started to lag when doing normal tasks, like running basic safari applications, loading and shutting down programs, and even minecraft runs slow even though it ran at maximum graphics settings perfectly! the computer's free storage is 70.61 GB out of 189 GB while the BOOTCAMP has 60.18 out of 60.18
free space. i thought it might just be that my sister is a computer slob, and has 36 files sitting right on the desktop! and from being a Windows user, i know that spamming your desktop with icons gives your exlorer.exe (or in this case, Finder) a back ache. I'm baffled here, haven't used Macintosh OSes for longer than 3 years, but i've used windows for 12 years (i'm 18) and currently i'm taking IT classes, so i should know a thing or two, but i'm stumped : /

  • 2009 Macbook white slow to boot after upgrade from 10.5.8 (Leopard)to Mountain Lion   SSD

Ok, I have a 2009 Macbook White w/ 2Gz Core 2 Duo, 2Gb RAM, 120Gb HDD and NV9400M graphics.   Mountain Lion finally tempted me to do the upgrade and I wanted to take the opportunity to upgrade to SSD as well.    Here's what I did:
Originally my 120Gb was partitioned as 90Gb on 10.5.8 and 30Gb on Bootcamp for Window Vista.
I upgraded Macbook from Leopard to Mountain Lion while it's still fitted with the original HDD.   Gotta give credit to the lads at the Genius Bar who helped me with the clean install while keeping the Bootcamp partition intact!
I then took out the HDD, stick it into a USB3.0 HD enclosure, then put in my brand new SSD. (Plextor 128Gb SATA3).   I booted from the 10.8 recovery partition on my old HDD via USB, partitioned the SSD, then 'restored' the HDD's Mac OS X partition (now 10.8) onto my SSD.   Relatively painless process, and as a PC geek, I can't complain!  :-)
Here's the situation:    Now that I've gotten Mountain Lion to run on my 3yr old macbook white on my brand spanking new SSD, I was actually expecting really snappy performance but no.   I noticed now it takes much longer to boot:  I was so 'convinced' that the combination of SSD + Mountain Lion would give me such a significant boost that I couldn't care less to write down the previous boot time.     Right now it takes about 40-50 seconds for me to even see the 'apple' sign and another 15-20 secondds to get up & running.   That's without anything running in the background as it's still a clean install.
Read a few old posts it seems a common issue but given that I have a clean install, I wanted to make sure I haven't done anything wrong.
Last but not least, I also noticed while I booted from the 10.8 recovery partition from my old HDD, there's also an option of doing 'clean' reinstall of 10.8 on my SSD.    I tried that but it ended up being a HUGE wait.    The estimated time just kept growing and when it hits 6hrs, I cancelled it.   What does it do and is it normal to take such a long time to complete?   I rememeber the upgrade from Leopard to Mountain Lion took abt. 1.5yr...

    Actually just noticed something interesting:
If I press and hold down the option key when I switch on the macbook, I will get to the boot screen whereas I can choose between my main partition and the recovery 10.8 on my SSD.  Once I select the main partition, I'll be able to complete the booting, total time is abt. 30 seconds.
So my guess is that if I don't force the boot screen, then the computer is running some process in the background that WILL eventually boot from the main partition?
Is there any setup I can do/tweak to get the computer to boot straight from the main partition?

  • Troubleshooting itunes after upgrade to Lion 10.7 (Macbook white)

Hi, I have a MacBook (white model 2008). I updated the OS X 10.5.8 to Lion 10.7 . Everything seems ok, except that itunes is not working, the app doesn't even open. A message appears saying that the app is not compatible with the OS X.
I tried to uninstall and reinstall itunes, but the message keeps poping.
Is there anything i can do to use itunes with this OS X?

    Hello AdryZav
Where are you opening iTunes, in the Dock or the Application Folder? Try opening it from the Application Folder or in Launch Pad as the dock may be referring to a previous link that is not the current version.

Just Wondering how come that a 1800$ macbook pro with 2.9GHZ, corei7 burnes slower then my old macbook white 2009???? Burning Cache is double on my old macbook 2048KB, on the new one is just 1024..... kinda thinking everything else is slower on my new macbook even though I got "MAVERICKS" on....

    Hello Chris,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Normally for this issue I would recommend the following troubleshooting article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573
Since you have already gone through some of the troubleshooting by doing a SMC reset and PRAM reset, and if all other troubleshooting the aforementioned article guides you through doesn't result in a resolution, refer to the following part of the article:
If you tried all of these steps for your display and the video issues persist, contact Apple technical support or take your Apple computer to the nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only)
    Take care,
    Alex H.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
    Uninstall "Sophos": http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/120838.aspx
    Uninstall "MacKeeper". Read below.
Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 required more extensive work to uninstall all its components.
If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.
If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.
what does this mean?:   Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemite
The message is merely informative. If there is anything to be inferred from it, it's that the programs shown have not been updated by you or their developer.
The items shown are not doing anything.
        MacUpdate Desktop
You don't need that garbage either. Always obtain software from legitimate sources.
    "MacFUSE" is outdated.
        /etc/hosts - Count: 1
If you have no explanation for that modification, read Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file.
    Battery: Health = Replace Soon
    Do that too: https://www.apple.com/batteries/service-and-recycling/
You inadvertently installed adware. You do not need to download or install anything to fix it.
For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware. Apple's instructions are linked in the Recovery Procedure near the end of that document. Read and follow them carefully. Pay particular attention to the easily overlooked passages directing you to restart your Mac when required.
    Lastly, you are using Google:
Google products including Google Chrome and Google Drive will burden any Mac regardless of its age or configuration. It litters a Mac with a plethora of root level system modifications in the same manner as a virus would, if such a thing were to exist, which it doesn't.
Google derives essentially all its revenue from advertising. Their products are "free" because you are the product Google sells.
Google Chrome was designed for the sole purpose of harvesting your personal information.
If Safari does not meet your requirements, I suggest Firefox. Unlike Chrome, Firefox does not alter a Mac's operating system, does not demand full-time root access for purposes known only to it, is not designed to harvest your personal information, and is not known to cause the degraded performance that Google Chrome is notorious for causing.
If you require Chrome and expect acceptable performance from your hardware, expect the need to replace it with newer hardware frequently.
Fix those problems by not using Google.

You have only about 10 percent free drive space left. 50gB is enough to run the computer but, if it gets much smaller, that can slow how Virtual Memory (VM) works as the system has to more carefully search the remaining space for qualified blocks to which to write data.
Adding RAM will reduce the writes-to-disk by VM but you should probably consider a little holiday disk cleaning of stuff you no longer use.
    This concerns me:

That is a LOT of log-in items for a compute with 4GB RAM. Some are hard to avoid but Excel is a big program that can be easily launched from the Dock. I don't know what "Inspiration 8" is but likely the same advice will apply.

  • Using Wireless in Windows 7 on Macbook White

Hi, I recently purchased a Macbook white and have both Mac OS 10.6.2 and Window 7 installed using Bootcamp.
However after setting up everything in the Windows 7, including drivers from the Mac OS installation disc; the network adapter (Broadcom 43xx) has no driver, i scan thru the disc, found a Broadcom driver and reloaded it, and yet did not help. So the Windows 7 could not setup wireless except connect directly to the router.
    Can someone advice.
    Thanks and Regards
    Jonathan Ong

I hv found a way to install the driver from the Mac OS disk...

  • Can I upgrade HD to 750GB, 7200rpm on 13-Inch 2008 macbook (white)?

I've just ordered a 'Western Digital Scorpio Black 750GB, 7200rpm, 2.5-inch internal Hard Drive' to upgrade the internal HD on my Early 2008 13-inch Macbook (white). It is only subsequently I've thought to check if there may be any issues with this, and I've read conflicting information. Some sources say the maximum compatible HD memory is 500GB, some say the maximum rpm is 5400rpm, others say 750GB and 7200rpm are compatible with the 2008 13-inch Macbooks.
I don't want to open the sealed packaging of the new 750GB, 7200rpm Hard Drive if I'm going to have to return it. Can anyone conclusively advise if this Hard Drive will be compatible with my Macbook?
The Macupgrades website shows a 'Seagate Momentus' 750GB, 7200rpm drive as being compatible, but only shows the 'WD Scorprio Blue' 750GB version, which runs at a slower 5400rpm - it doesn't mention the faster Scorpio Black (7200rpm) version (scroll further down the page to view HD compatibility): http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/machine.php?name=macbook
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Tanja

Did you ever find out if this is possible? Did you try the drive and it worked out for you?
I'm actually considering the same drive, so I'd love to hear what happened.

  • Problems when installing OS X 10.6 to my Macbook White

So, I decided to upgrade my Macbook White OS X (10.5) with my sister's 13 inch Macbook Pro installation disk, but it won't work. It keeps saying that it cannot install in my Macbook, no matter what I do. In a moment of rash decisions, I (stupidly) erased ALL my data, thinking that that was the problem. Is there a way I can install the Mac OS X 10.6 onto my laptop, or should I buy a new set of disks with the Mac OS X 10.5. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The discs that ship with Macs are specific to that model of Mac, so your sister's iMac discs do not have the necessary drivers to run your MacBook--which is why it was telling you it couldn't install. (Not to mention, installing OS X from your sister's disc would be a violation of the terms of use!)
If you need to get your data back, you can try recovery software like Data Rescue:
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
And, most importantly, stop trying to use the MacBook until your data is recovered, as everything you do overwrites the old data blocks.
You can use the restore discs that shipped with your MacBook to reinstall the OS and software that used to be there. Or you can buy Snow Leopard, which is $29US and will install on your MacBook. However, you should probably use those restore discs first anyway, as the SL disc will not include the iLife apps--iPhoto, iMovie, etc.--but only the OS software. When you upgrade to SL thereafter, your iLife apps will remain and still be useable.

I've looked through several posts searching for my solution, not sure how to test my memory - may be my problem - that and i'm only running 2GB RAM.  I'd go upgrade that tomorrow if that would fix my issue.
also, battery seems to not last like it should, even after replacing the battery.
Any solutions or options for me?
    Thanks crew -
    Gary

Hi Gary, I may have a simple solution for you, and hope it's not too late.
    Try to uninstall AppTrap !
I have a MacBook Pro 15" with 16GB RAM and two SSD in it. So it can't be slow But recently I saw that my CPU was hot (70-75°C) and fans were spinning even with all apps closed. Same problem with the battery shorter than ever. In Activity Monitor I saw that AppTrap (that you have too) was taking 2,88GB of my RAM… So I disabled it on the pref panel and uncheck launch at start, and I quitted it in the activity monitor. My CPU becomes cool again (40°C) and fans stopped instantly.
I really hope this will help you !

  • Hp C5580 recognize connection to 13 inch MacBook White?

I have a new 13 inch MacBook White and a new hp C5580 All-in-One. I can print and copy, but when I try to scan to the computer from the front panel, it says "scanning problem - try to scan from the computer" and if I try to scan from the computer using the Device Manager, it says "Sorry, scanner could not be initialized - scanner not found." This in spite of the fact that I consulted both Hewlett Packard support and an AppleCare product specialist and in a three hour session deleted EVERYTHING hp, downloaded the correct driver from the hp site and installed it, tried numerous other strategies that I don't remember including unplugging and plugging back in, verifying and repairing permissions, verifying the disk (Hard Drive), trying a different USB port on the computer and God knows what else. The final step was to reinstall the operating system from the disk that came with the computer. Just for kicks I tried to scan again before using Software Update - still no luck. I need a brilliant idea from someone.

The only other computer that I have here is a nine year old iMac DV. I actually can use it with a nine year old Agfa SnapScan to scan pictures, transfer them to a memory stick and from the stick to the laptop, so I'm not completely out of business. The last resort that the Apple expert suggested was that I erase my hard drive, but I'm very reluctant to do this when it might not solve the problem.
