Slow MacbookPro 2011 15 inch i7

My Macbook pro (2011 i7 2.22GHz QuadCore) is being very slow. Normally when I boot up the computer it takes around 30 seconds or show to display the desktop but after installing Microsoft office 2011 the start up became very slow and the overall performance of the computer has become very slow. I dont know if the installation of Microsoft Office is causing this or is it because I edit and render videos from screen flow and iMovie and the computer becomes really hot. But I dont know what is causing this the beach ball icon pops up when im triing to interact with other applications. Any suggestions or ideas of what might be causing this? This only happened suddenly.

First, you're quite correct: 4 gigs of RAM is perfectly fine with your MBP. Maybe following the advice of RegretYen wouldn't be a bad idea. Run Activity Monitor as you perform normal tasks, and the very least, you'll determine how Disk Activity and Network are doing.
I use Office 2004 on my MBP, but I know that the current version of Office loads online templates when it's booted. It is possible that this is cutting into the speed. Office 2011 is highly dependent on the Cloud - which means you should see spikes of activity whenever its being used.
What's the bandwidth of your internet connection?

  • Windows 7 & Bootcamp 3.1 freezing up in new Macbookpros 15 inch i7.

There is a major problem with Windows 7 running on Macbookpro 15 inch - i7 laptops. Due to some bug issues in Bootcamp 3.1, whenever you install a software in Windows 7, the Bootcamp drivers get corrupted. You will notice that little diamond shape icon of Bootcamp is missing and speakers are in mute state but itself.
Just uninstall Bootcamp drivers using Control Panel and reinstall from the original Macbookpro DVD. It is better to copy the Bootcamp folder on your C: drive since you will be needing it every time you install a new program in Windows 7.
Hope the programmers at Apple realize the issues and fix it in Bootcamp 3.1 instead of telling the customers that it is not Apple issue it is Windows 7 issues.
    Hope this helps.

  • IGrabber won't install on MacBookPro 2011

I use iGrabber to transfer my VHS tapes to CDs. It is version OSX 1.4.6 and I'm trying to install on my MacBookPro 2011 and it's telling me it can't install. It works fine on my iMac.

Did you upgrade your Hard Drive at some point? I discovered upon trying to upgrade my Intel Mac Mini to leopard that I had been using a HD with an Apple Partition Map, which was default on a HD upgrade I had installed. It worked fine with Tiger, but Leopard would not install. Leopard requires the GUID Partition Table on the hard drive. You can check it with disk utility.
If that is the case, my solution was to clone my drive to an external HD, reformat my internal drive with GUID, then clone back and install leopard. (if you do the straight upgrade, be careful to remove all APE application enhancers from you Tiger system 1st. I didn't & got the blue screen)

  • My MacBookPro 13 inch mid 2010 version 7.1, I want to update it to OS XLion, but my apple id is cant buy paid apps, what should i do?

My MacBookPro 13 inch mid 2010 is still currently Mac OS X version 10.6.4, i want to update it to OS X LION, to improve my macbook use, but i dont know how, im currently updating my software but still dont know i also cant buy paid apps on my apple id bcoz i dont have a credit card, what should i do to upgrade my macbook?? thanks for your response!

    Hi ..
Make sure your Mac meets Lion's requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
OSX v10.6.6 or later (V10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available spare
From here > Apple - OS X Lion - Technical specifications
You can purchase an iTunes gift card which can be redeemed and used to purchase Lion.
Choose your iTunes Gift Card - Apple Store
Gift cards can be redeemed by clicking Redeem under Quick Links right side of the App Store window.
Read BEFORE upgrading to Lion > Lion upgrade questions: Apple Support Communities
    Mac OS X version 10.6.4
You need to update your system software before you can download Lion.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click Software Update ...
When purchasing apps from the App Store including Lion, take into account the total purchase price may include any applicable taxes and fees.

I see an impressive collection of LaunchAgents, Launch Daemons, Internet Plugins and drivers for who knows what. At this point I would like to suggest a completely clean install of your system (after making a complete backup of course).
At the very least uninstall the Kaspersky software completely, and the same with what remains of the terrible CleanMyMac software.

  • Slow Macbook 13 inch early 2011

    Hello,
Recently I have been using my Macbook extensively.  I have noticed that it seems that everytime I open the lid of my macbook use it right from sleep mode it gets quite bogged down from going from sleep to actively using it.  The wait times are getting quite annoying and I don't use many programs or have many running (Pages, ITunes, Calender, and Mail).  Also my Hard Drive is not even close to full.  I currently just have the baseline model with no added memory or anything.  I am just curious is there any way to boost the time it takes to restore from sleeping mode, It will just have the pinwheel spinning and cannot do anything.  Hopefully there is some program that can see where my ram usage that will show why my computer is being bogged down.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities,
I too have a 13" MBP however I have the i7 model. I have found that when opening the lid it takes anywhere from three to eight seconds to fully resume normal use. I think that it may just be the fact that the HD has to start back up however I'm not certain, so don't quote me on that. My other theory is that OS X Lion is what is taking it so long to resume because it requires a password to come out of sleep. My Mac has not slowed down after about five seconds (on average) after sleep. After that pinwheel goes away within five seconds it resumes its normal speedy lifestyle. You can see how much memory is being used by opening the Activity Monitor app. How long does it take to resume your mac after sleep (seconds). And how long are your normal wait times. Knowing these times will help me better diagnose your problems.

I noticed another thread where they've been use etercheck tool in order to pinpoint issues and get some support so I was hopefull that someone would kindly give me some feedback, here is my report:

              3.70 GB  Page-outs

Your Mac has been running for 23 days and since you have 4GB of RAM it may help to reboot once a week or so. Quitting browsers occasionally may help too.
You have 3GB of 'Page-outs' (in the Virtual Memory Statistics). This suggests you have run out of RAM at some point & the OS had to move the info onto the disk - this is a slow process, so you either need to run less apps or install more RAM. Cleaning up old apps may help reduce the amount of RAM you need, so run EtreCheck again in a week or so & see how the 'Page-outs' are doing.
Your boot disk is getting rather full, its is a spinning hard disk, so the performance will decrease the more data you store on it. The data fills from the outside edge towards the middle of the disk, the outside is fastest. If you can free up more space that can help you get better read & write speed. A 1TB disk will perform better with your ~460GB of data. I'd also back it up and boot from recovery mode & verify/ repair the boot disk http://pondini.org/OSX/DU6.html
Another option is to clone the disk to an external & then restore it back onto the the system - this effectively 'defragments' the disk, just have several backups if you plan to do this.
Check that any Huawei software is up to date - HWNetMgr and HWPortDetect are installed as startup items. If you don't need them look for uninstallers or instructions on Huawei's site, it's best not to load items into the system level if they are not needed
Virtualbox looks like it may be from last year (version 4.1.14), it is loading the extensions into the system, so it's important to update it.
See if your login items are causing issues…
Logout of your user account (in the Apple menu)
Log back in, but hold shift as you press the login button. This will disable the login items in your user account. If the Mac is better like this you know you need to remove or update login items.
Running uTorrent as a login item may use system resources that could be used elsewhere.
I'll mark this up like the other reports & add an explanation of the sections below the report.

Red items are loaded at the system level (not necessarily bad, but they have the potential to modify the OS).
Blue items are loaded at the user level
Pink items are to get attention :^)
    Cleanup:
All the usual caveats apply, backup before you modify the system, delete the items (or move them to another disk or folder if you are worried about deleting the wrong thing) but ensure the originals are gone or updated.
Use the Finders "Go menu > Go to Folder…" when you need to open the hidden ~/Library (your users library).
Reboot for the system changes to take effect.
    How to find updates:
The critical launchd jobs & kernel extensions use reverse domain notation e.g.
com.logmein.hamachi.plist means look at http://logmein.com for updates (if you don't recognize it removing it may be appropriate)
In short: You want to try to update or remove all the system level items.
    Startup Items: Stored in /Library/StartupItems/
Startup Items have been discontinued by Apple since Mac OS 10.4. They are responsible for making changes at a system level. Remove them all or spend time ensuring ALL related software is up to date. You need a very good reason to have anything installed in here. The developers are ignoring Apple guidelines by installing these - not a good sign.
    Kernel Extensions: Stored in /Library/Extensions/
Kernel Extensions also load third party code, but they insert it into the 'core' of the OS. These can be safe, however you must ensure the related tools or apps are up to date, otherwise the system is basically built upon quicksand. Remove them all & see if the OS works better.
    Launchd jobs: several types
    LaunchAgents          - Stored in /Library/LaunchAgents
    LaunchDaemons       - Stored in /Library/LaunchDaemons
User LaunchAgents   - Stored in ~/Library/LaunchAgents
These are all background jobs, they are not necessarily bad, but if they are loading old code it could be doing untold damage to the performance & stability of the entire OS. Focus on the System level jobs (the ones inside /Library - the system level) also remove ['failed'], non-system jobs.
EtreCheck gives a status on launchd jobs…
    [loaded]                  - a running job
[not loaded]            - jobs that are set not to run, basically harmless, remove them unless you plan to use the associated software (if it is up to date)
[failed]                    - jobs in a crashed or unknown state, it could be forking processes or using all the system resources, remove these.
    User login items:
Applications and helpers that are managed inside 'Systems Preferences > Users and groups > Login Items tab'.
These are loaded at the 'User level', consider removing all of them whilst you troubleshoot.  When you decide to re-add them ensure the software is up to date.
    3rd Party Preference Panes: & Internet Plug-ins:
    /Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
Once again these items all must be up to date, or remove them from your system. If the prefpanes manage additional software use the uninstaller or see the developers site for uninstall instructions. You can also right click to remove 3rd party preference panes in System preferences
Read the list of Internet plug-ins carefully, there are often duplicate Flash player versions that won't help stability, it's just wasted space too.
Don't forget to also update Safari's extensions in it's preferences (if you have any).
Re-run EtreCheck after cleaning up to see if items have returned (some apps will reload the background jobs when re-opened, so either update or remove the software).
Hope that isn't too daunting, the OS should be better if there are less old items running at the system level.
Ask if any of it needs clarifying.

  • SLOW SLOW SLOW SBS 2011

    Hi --
I have an SBS 2011 Standard SP1 box that continues to be a major annoyance because of how slow and unworkable it becomes. This server is running on dual four-way 3-GHz Xeon processors, 16 GB of RAM and several terabytes of SATA-3 disk space. It is intended
to support the needs of THREE users. Right now, it is working essentially as installed; except for the antivirus program, all it's running is software installed by the SBS installer itself. It's providing file and print and email services to three users on
eight devices (three deskside PCs running Windows 7 Pro, two laptops (one running Windows 7 Pro, one running Windows Vista Ultimate), and three PDAs (two WM 6.5, one iPhone). And it does it dismally (except for email on Outlook and pushed to the PDAs).
Response times on this server start out passable right after the machine is booted and go downhill from there. Opening server shares or starting a remote desktop session might be OK after the server reboots, but after it's been running for a while it becomes
virtually impossible to get the machine's attention. Trying to open an OWA or RWA session is an ordeal no one wants to tackle. It can take one to two minutes after the user enters the URL for the challenge page to be returned from the server. And after the
user logs in, it can take up to six minutes for the OWA or RWA landing page to be displayed. From that point, response times on these apps are awful for the duration of the session. We haven't even attempted to set up and use SharePoint on this server yet.
The server and all other devices have gigabit connections to the LAN, with a 6 Mb pipe to the Internet.
The longer the machine runs, the more resource-bound it becomes. On Friday night, with none of the PCs logged in and no one logged in remotely (i.e. the only activity was Exchange pushing email to the PDAs), the server was reporting from 47 to 56 percent
of CPU usage and a staggering 95% of physical memory in use, claiming to have just shy of 600 MB of RAM unused. 45 minutes after I rebooted the server, those numbers dropped to 3% CPU usage and 3.9 GB of physical RAM in use. By Sunday afternoon -- in the middle
of a three-day weekend during which NO ONE logged into the system -- those numbers had risen to 35% CPU usage and 9.3 GB of physical RAM in use.
And I'm not quite sure I understand how these CPU usages are being reported, either. If I sort the process stack by CPU usage from highest to lowest, on many occasions the total CPU usage being reported does not match the individual CPU usage being reported
by the processes. And it's not a round-off problem, or a problem of one or two percentage points. One time I took a snapshot of the Task Manager window, and the sum of the nonzero CPU usages differed from the displayed total by 21 points.
About the only component that's working well on this server is Exchange. Whether on the internal PCs running Outlook through TCP/IP, the laptops connecting -- from anywhere -- via Outlook Anywhere, or the PDAs, mail comes and goes smoothly and promptly.
Mail arriving into Outlook hits the PDA an instant later. A reply from the PDA is readily available in Outlook's Sent Items folder. Contact and Calendar updates immediately propagate to all pertinent devices. Just don't try to use OWA ...
This server replaced an SBS 2003 SP2 box running on dual 1-GHz P3 processors, 2 GB of RAM and ATA-133 hard drives. That server also ran software that has not yet been installed on the new box, including the full installation of the Symantec Endpoint Protection
Small Business suite v11 (with the SEP server component managing the PCs). The new server is only running the SEP v12 unmanaged client; I have not dared burden it with any additional software. The old server dramatically outperformed this new platform. And
the old server also acted as the network's firewall and access control device, so it was doing more work than this new machine is doing here now ...
I have looked high and low for an explanation for this and have not gotten anywhere. Every piece of hardware has been rigorously tested several times; none has shown any problem. To the best of my knowledge, all programs, drivers, and firmware are at the
latest available revs and are all compatible with Server 2008 and/or SBS 2011. The server has three HP network printers installed. It has updated drivers and management software for the RAID controller, which we downloaded from the Intel site. It's running
SEP 12.1.1000.157 RU1 (unmanaged client only). Everything else it's running is right off of the SBS 2011 installation media (plus every available update from WU).
I've found one KB article that references the slow OWA and RWA issue (#2493361). Its solution is to install SP1 -- which this server already has.
I need to fix this ... What is wrong with this installation?
    Thanks
    CL

There is no third-party software other than the SEP package. We were having these issues before I installed the SEP client. I installed the SEP client only (not the full-blown package, v. 12.1.1000.157 RU1) after almost two weeks of running the machine with
no antivirus protection at all, which was making me uneasy.
And we've run the full SEP package on older SBS machines without issue. On the SBS 2011 box, we have the latest available version. All I've found that might implicate the antivirus program and explain what's happening on the machine is a reference to problems
with TDI drivers, but the solution it presented was to install SP1. The article did say to install Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, but the link to the SP1 page says to install it though Windows Update. Since this server is showing that it is running SBS 2011 Standard
SP1, and there are no outstanding patches or fixes to install, I'm assuming that the necessary patches are already installed. But again, we've had these problems with this server even before I installed any antivirus program.
The only other "third-party" software is the IASTOR driver and support programs for the Intel RAID controller. The original driver came from the SBS installation media. As part of the troubleshooting efforts to try to resolve the problems with this server,
I installed an updated IASTOR driver and application that I downloaded from the Intel site (v. 10.0.0.1046).
The three HP printer drivers all came either from the SBS installation media or from Windows Update.
The latest chipset and motherboard support drivers were downloaded from the Intel site. This included an updated graphics driver for the on-board graphics chip that came with the download package.
And that's it. This server has no specialized hardware. The only "extra" hardware is an external eSATA WD drive used for backups.
The server had multiple Intel gigabit NICs, but all but one were disabled since SBS 2011 only requires (and apparently can only work with) one NIC.
I haven't even installed Office on this server ...
