If it was me, I would be using a 500GB SSD boot drive, or 250GB ($119)
Old rule "Less is more" and if you want a production system to run fast and be rock solid, avoid anything not essential. Might want an alternate user accounts or even dual boot or run some stuff in an OS X VM.
I would rearrange the memory and add more: 3 x 4GB on one bank and gradually upgrade bank B to same.
Finally, upgrade to 8-core 3.2GHz or higher
Did everything run better with Mavericks? Did you keep it on a clone?
Did you upgrade in place or do a clean install? those often have different outcomes.
A 5,1 should flatten any bumps easily and perform very very well. Different configurations for Adobe vs FCP-X and others.

My MacPro is aggravatingly slow. Even when no apps are open I can hear it working all the time.
I've run Console and get hundreds of the following message:

I have used EtreCheck after reading another post on this forum. Here is the result. Does anyone know what to deduct from this?

Is Bitdefender Antivirus Software installed?  I see it listed in your diagnostic reports.  You don't need such software.
Same is true for Rapport.  You never want to run two applications that attempt to do the same thing.  And again, you don't need such software.  Take a look at your add-on software for applications that attempt to provide additional security or virus-protection... they usually do more harm than good.  Been running my system, without such software since OS X 10.0.  You're buying a placebo.  Windows requires such software, your Mac doesn't.
Try booting into Safe Mode to see if the performance improves?

You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. In addition to the files listed in the support article, you may also have to remove the following in the same way:
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.Installer.completer.download.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.Installer.completer.ltvbit.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.Installer.completer.update.plist
    ~/Library/Application Support/IM.Installer/Completer.app
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.
After removing the malware, remember to reset your home page in all the web browsers affected, if it was changed.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
If you find Apple's instructions too hard to follow, ask for an alternative that doesn't require you to trust a black-box application without knowing what it does.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • Very Slow MacPro 3GHz Dual Xeon running Snow Leopard

I upgraded to Snow Leopard when it was released.... at the same time my computer hard drive has started to fill up.... I have currently only 20GB left from an original 500GB HD. My computer has become so sluggish... I can hear the HD constantly crackling... and Photoshop has become a night are to you... I used to have a 60GB scratch disk... but due to two HD's being fried over electrical outages I now have to use my main HD as scratch and I won't be able to free up space until my new DROBO system arrives.
Can anyone tell me if what I'm experiencing is normal for a computer running at nearly total capacity or could this be a more sinister issue involving problem with Snow Leopard and Photoshop CS4.

  • Seagate Barracuda ES ST3750640NS 750 GB - slow random access in MacPro

I installed four Seagate Barracuda ES ST3750640NS 750 GB disks in my MacPro (5GB RAM). They are mounted as two RAID-1 arrays (mirrored, no speed up).
It seems that also those (not just the non-ES, …AS version) suffers from slow speeds (<1MB) in random access with small blocks. How much this is representative of typical access with Mac OS X I cannot tell, but still this looks like some kind of incompatibility of the drives' firmware with a MacPro.
Does anyone have experience on how to correct that?

All of the Seagate 7200.10 model hard drives have slow Random Read performance. None of the different model numbers change this fact. There is no fix for this and you will probably only notice this issue when opening a large library with Aperture or some other application that depends on a large number of small files to read.
The Randowm write performance of the Seagate 7200.10 models is actually very good. In addition, the large block copy capabilities of the 7200.10 models is exceptional.
Xbench tests make the Seagate 7200.10 model performance look much worse than it actually is.

  • Need Help: Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 Slow Performance on MacPro

We installed Adobe Acrobat pro as part of Design premium on MACPRO twelve Core 2.93 with 10GB Memory and 27inch Display running OS 10.8.4
We opened high resolution pdf file 170MB with 330pages with 300% Zoom, when we scrolled trough the pages, the respond is very slow and sluggish. We Zoom in to 100%, scrolling still sluggish.
We try to reseat the memory, repair permission,  reset PRAM and the problem still the same.
    Can you help me?

In all truth 170mb is pretty big for a PDF. Even with a rockin' setup like that, it's about the equivalent of 30 copies of Atlas Shrugged (891 pages). Being high res, and that size, it's not a "quick" file. My mini has 4Gb and a Core i5, I'm pretty sure it would drag on it.

  • MBP to MacPro Network Connection Deadly Slow

I recently purchased an Intel MBP, and am connected to my home network wirelesly via a Belkin N1 router. Connecting to the Internet works just fine: speed is good, connection is strong, etc.
But connecting to shared drives over my home network - specifically, those on my MacPro - has become deadly slow. It can take hours to transfer files of a few MBytes. The MacPro is connected to the network via Ethernet. It has four full drive bays. The Internet performance (e.g., web browsing) on the MacPro is fine.
I previously has a PowerBook G4, and it did not have this problem - network speeds worked fine. It's only after I moved to the MBP that this started.
This problem occurs even if a connect the MBP to the network with an Ethernet cable.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
    MacBook Pro/PowerMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    William:
I've got DHCP turned on in the Belkin, so it's handing out IP addresses. The router does connect to a switch, and I haven't tried a different port on the switch, or resetting it, but I will.
One other thing to note - I have a Mac Mini as well; the Mini runs wirelessly. The connection from the MBP to the Mini has slowed down as well.
I was going to pick up an Airport Express router this afternoon and try it. If nothing else, I'll have a nice collection of Apple hardware...
    Thanks for the feedback.

  • New 2012 iMac slower SD renders from AE than a 2007 MacPro?

    Hi there -
I just purchased a new iMac for our small production house.  99% of the time, we are loving the machine: the performance, the stability, the speed, are all significant improvements over our 5 year-old Mac Pros.  We have run numerous tests comparing the performance of our new iMac to our old MacPros and on average, the new iMac is performing 2-4 times faster than our Mac Pros.  However, we've run into one specific issue where our iMac performs worse than our older MacPros, and unfortunately, this one issue is a major part of our everyday work flow and currently prevents us from converting all of our old Mac Pros to new iMacs.  I'll try to be as brief yet detailed as possible so you have all the specs.
Our problem is when we render out standard definition Quicktime Animation MOV's out of Adobe After Effects CS5.5, our new iMac performs 30-100% slower than our 5-year old Mac Pros.
Here are the machines we're comparing:
    Mac Pro (OS X 10.6.8)
2 x 3 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon, 10 GB RAM,
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB VRAM
    vs.
    2012 27" iMac (OS X 10.8.2)
    3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, 32 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB, 3 TB Fusion Drive with (128 GB SSD)
Both machines are running Adobe After Effects CS5.5 and are using the exact same projects and assets.  Source files were stored on the desktop for each test, and outputs were sent to the desktop. We have also manipulated Multi-Core Processing settings and RAM-Allocation settings and while we saw slight differences in render times on the iMac, it was never close to competing with the MacPro.
Here are some of the other test results we get that meet our expectations:
                      - Encodes out of Adobe Premiere Pro are about twice as fast on the new iMac
                      - HD renders out of Adobe After Effects (both H.264 and Quicktime Animation) are about twice as fast on the new iMac
    Other tests
                      - We have downloaded a trial version of AE CS6 and have gotten similar results (SD renders are slower on the new iMac than our older MacPros).
Does anyone have an idea what is going on here?  Is there some way that the operating system, hardware, or Adobe software treat these files differently so that standard definition renders would be much slower than a 5-year old Mac Pro?  Considering our new iMac has far superior processors and memory, we are not surprised that our HD renders are much faster now on our new machine.  But we are just baffled on how it could be performing worse on SD exports.

I am having the exact same problem. I purchased an Imac and it was deliverd last week. I installed CS6 Production premium and went to work in after effects on a project that rendered very slow on my 2011 macbook pro 2.2 quad core I7 with 8gb DDR3 ram and an intel HD 3000 512 MB.
My new Imac has the exact same specs as yours and I figured it would fly through the render, but in Premiere and AE the results are the same, my macbook pro is equaling and even surpassing the speed of the render time.
I am very frusterated that the preformance is like this. If someone has answers please pass them on.

  • Iphoto library seems to slow down my new MacPro.

so far no one at at the Apple store can have a solution why the new MacPro is RATHER  slow.
some did suggest that the iphoto library MAY BE  too big...
also, when I work with it ..( it contains over `12000 items) ..it machine works hard and slow.
    who can help ?
    establish another library ?
safe the pics on an external harddrive ?
    appreciate your ideas and help,

Open the Activity Monitor when iPhoto is slowing down your Mac and see what processes is soaking up all the CPU cycles.  Also check the Console for messages during that time.  It can also give info as to what's slowing things down.
Do you have any anti virus software installed or have used MacKeeper, CleanMyMac or similar type of software on your Mac?

  • Why is Motion 4 Upgrade running sooo slow on my brand new MacPro 8core?

Hi I realize that buying an 8.core MacPro in 2012 is buying a 3-year old machine, and FinalCut Studio, with FCP7, & Motion 4 Upgrade is buying an ancient software nobody at Apple seems to care much about anymore, but it happens to be the software I need for the work we are doing.
I used to run Motion 3 on a MacPro G5 and it ran pretty well. But I did NOT expect that Motion 4 Upgrade would run at an absolute achingly slow snail's pace on a brand new Intel MacPro that has more than twice the processing power of my ancient G5. You spend all this money to upgrade and would expect that an Apple software like Motion should run amazingly fast on this much firepower.
That said, i'm hoping that someone can give me a clue to help me figure out how to make it run better. At least fast enough to be able to try out a few effects on some, say, text, on a 20 second animation and not have to wait 25min for a render three letters of text.... ???!
Could my MacPro have a massive hardware defect? I also run Final Cut Pro 7 and also find it does not perform particularly fast. I am no newbie, having used these softwares for years and also work as an editor. I've thought maybe it'S some problem with RAM filling up and eventually choking, since it seems the longer I work on something the slower Motion gets. But everything i've tried has failed to improve it, even reinstalling. I'm running Lion (10.7.4) and have found that it has been a nightmare getting it to run correctly. Could that be a cause? It's causing me to get depressed and give up on Macs. Never thought I'd say that!
    Thx for any help!
    fj

UPDATE: After quitting and reopening the same project that was extremely slow, it performed better? I then worked in it for a while and it seemed to work ok, but then after I clicked on the layers editor to close one of the layers Motion just ground to a halt! So it seems there is a bug within Motion, at least on my machine. If I close and reopen the same project the performance returns.
Is there a possibility that the version I purchased has a bug? Is this a bug others have? Or is this an issue with my MacPro? In any case, it makes working on anything of any kind of complexity in Motion 4, even low complexity text effects, virtually unuseable.
Any feedback from others as to this problem? Input greatly appreciated!

  • Actiontec M1000 modem (wired) - AEX(g) - MacPro is SLOW

I've connected my Actiontec M1000 DSL modem via E-net directly to my MacPro - and that works great, just what it should be (~7Mbps).
But when I connect the modem to my AEX via Ethernet, the connection gets slow - but not just slow, it seems like every page request needs about 10 seconds while nothing happens, then BAM - the page pops up instantly. The Activity Monitor confirms this - network activity is near zero after the initial page request, then spikes after ~10 seconds.
The M1000 has DHCP server capability plus other stuff I don't understand. I've set up the AEX thus:
    Connect using: Ethernet
    Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
IP Address, subnet mask, and router address are given
DNS servers are given and greyed out
    Domain name is given: domain.actdsltmp
    DHCP Client ID is blank
    Ethernet WAN port: Automatic
    Connection sharing: Off (Bridge mode)
Channel conflict with neighboring networks is not the issue (I'm on 11 (auto); they're all on 6 for some reason).
The network is my MacPro, a Tivo, and a couple of iPhones.
I used to have a 2wire wireless gateway that delivered ~12Mbps just fine, so I don't imagine it's the "old" network. Hmmmm.
It certainly seems like an issue with my AP network, but what?

I'd perform a "hard" reset or a "factory default" reset of the AX. Seems that whenever a new cable modem is connected to my AEBS, some internal parameter is messed with and a hard reset is necessary. It may actually be a requirement of your Actiontec modem rather than the AX itself.
Here's the link describing how to reset an AX:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1450
Read the whole thing first. Not that you could hurt anything, it's just that you can perform several types of resets using the same button and you'll want to know which one is required for the firmware that happens to be installed on your AX.
Try the "hard" reset first. Before you try it write down all its present settings so you can initialize it properly. If that doesn't work perform the "factory defaults" reset.

  • On MacPro Windows XP slow - is it Bootcamp?

I have MacPro with 2 dual core Xeon processors 2.66 Ghz , 3GB Ram, 3 hard drives. The last 6 month I've used it mainly under Bootcamp and Windows XP because of software availability issues.
Last month I've become desperate - computer was working so slow. For example to start Maya took 70 sec, after I click on a file with .txt extension in file manager I have to wait a minute or 2 for notepad to open.
So I did some research, downloaded some utilities to configure computer, to tweak configuration, cleaned up registry, unfragmented hard drives. After a week of work I still had the same problem,
what I've learned that there is no way to use more than 2 GB of RAM under bootcamp and that only one processor is used for all operations, only for rendering system uses all 4 processors.
Then I've decided to go back to Mac OS, installed Maya for Mac and Parallels and miracle happened, now my computer is so fast. To start up Maya under Mac OS takes 25 sec, it uses all 4 processors for all operations and all 3 GB of RAM. I still need Windows to run some applications but it seems to run much faster even if it uses the same Bootcamp partition.
So now I'm trying to figure out: is it Mac OS X so much faster than Windows XP or Apple's Bootcamp slows down Windows and on a Windows computer Windows XP is fast.
    What do you think?

is it Mac OS X so much faster than Windows XP or Apple's Bootcamp slows down Windows and on a Windows computer Windows XP is fast
I don't believe it's either. I think it's simply Windows XP having problems. Windows XP should go like any PC with similar hardware. All Boot Camp does is allow a GUID partitioned drive to have a NTFS/FAT32 partition on it such that it appears as a C drive to Windows. That all it does. Additionally, drivers are supplied for Apple specific hardware.
I would check the state of your Windows XP installation.

  • Why is my MacPro so SLOW at everything?

Ok, I 've been using my MacPro for the past 2 weeks and I must say it has been a headache. Hopping between apps is really slow and the overall system performance in slower than my older 1.8 GHz DP G5.
I do a lot of heavy Photoshop (CS2) work daily and it has been a nightmare. Once PS is open every other app struggles. Illustrator shuts down everytime I try to switch between it and Photoshop. Its as if the clipboard cannot store any medium size file in memory. Even when working on small files the machine struggles to run multiple apps.
I only have 1GB of ram installed. Is this a bare minimum or something? How much better will another 1GB make my machine. I've heard that MacPro's need lots of ram to function smoothly is this true? Is there something 'on' by default that is bogging down my machine?
Please help. I'm losing precious production time each day.

Hi just got a question for you.
I'm a graphic designer and I have used a 1.8 DP G5 with 1G of RAM for distilling my files and such.
I have recently been working on a imac G5 2.0Gz with 2g of RAM.
All my cs apps work fine creating my ads in illustrator and photoshop doesn't lag to much in comparison to the PowerMac....until I start distiling and postscripting files in Indesign and Acrobat Distiller, at which point time stands still for hours on end, I really need to buy and "PRO" mac, i can't keep creating my pdfs this way.
Since I've started my own business I can't use my ex-bosses DP G5 anymore so I need to buy one.
Here is the question, Do you think a Pro mac is faster than the imac G5 when using Adobe CS, and if not should I buy a Power Mac G5, even do we all know Apple will give the PowerPC machines the booth in the next 24 months or so?
