Slow MBA WiFi compared to iMac

I have an iMac 27" model late 2012.  I also have a Mac Book Air 11 inch mid 2011.  The two are sitting next to each other.  Both are on WiFi talking to my Time Capsule.  I use speedtest.net to run speed tests.  The iMac reports download speed at 29 MB/sec (my cable company service rate is reported to be 25 MB/sec).  Upload on the iMac is about 6 MB/sec.  I run the same test on the MBA sitting next to the iMac and the reported speeds are 8 MB/sec down and 5 MB/sec up.  My wife's even older iMac (mid 2010) sitting much further from the TC than my iMac or MBA reports 28 MB/sec down and 6 MB/sec up.  What could be causing the speed difference between the iMac and MBA even when they are next to each other.  All three computers are running Yosemite.

Are they both at the same distance from the Router?
Is the iMac connecting at top speed of the Router?
Open Network Utility in Applications>Utilities>Info tab, select Airport/Wifi & what is the Link Speed & are there any Errors/Collisions on the right?

  • Very slow/stalling wifi connection on iMac

I recently purchased the iMac 21.5" Core i3 3.06GHz- I was quite exited about my new computer as I've been thinking about switching to Mac for a couple of months. I was amazed with the software compared to Windows, but so far I'm very dissapointed with the wifi connection.
I connect to a router which is two floors down in the same apartment building (we have an agreement to share the connection with my neighbors)- D-link router using WEP- authentication. On the same spot where I placed my iMac, I regularly get 2-3 out of 5 bars and speeds of approx. 250 kb/s with my corporate Windows7 lenovo PC. However, the iMac wifi connection is very slow- I'm not sure of the exact speed, as the connection is very unstable- sometimes webpages load quickly, but sometimes a simple web-page takes forever. The key issue is downloading files- when downloading a file, the speed starts at 250- 300 kb/s at first, then quickly drops to approx. 50 kb/s, a then usually stalls and the download is rarely finished.
I have tried browsing apple support for help, and found advice to adjust MTU in AirPort settings, and I experimented with various DNS, but niether of these seems to help, my web-browsing and page loading times seem to have improved, but downloading files is still almost impossible. The problem si very frustrating, since I get reliable speed and connection on my lenovo PC on the very same spot as the iMac.
Based on reading internet discussions on this topic this seems to be a rather wide-spread problem with the iMac, and I'm wondering if anyone here has a similar experience and any suggestions for a solution? Can it be an issue with the aluminium body which has poorer reception, and I simply need to move my desk to different location in the apartment?
    Thanks, I appreciate all suggestions!

    Hello,
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON?
The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of System Preferences>Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.
    10.5.x/10.6.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

  • Low WiFi compared to iMac

Not a tech nerd here so please be simple in any explanations...
3GS iOS4 on wifi speedtests at about 6.5-7.5 mbps (fwiw on 3G [with full bars] it tests at about 0.25-0.30mbps). Wife's iPhone (same os) tests the same.
Our iMac, whther on Airport mode or hard wired to the Netgear router, routinely tests at about 14.5 mbps.
My old Gateway PC laptop is similar to the iphone ospeed on wifi but also slow when hardwired. So, I initially figured it was just another case of mac being superior to the pc...but then why would the iphone also be so slow?
    Thanks

You mean that you are using Internet Sharing with iMac - correct?
If that is what you are talking about, try turning everything off and start over. Create a new ad hoc network. I don't know that OS you are running on the iMac, but go into your system preferences, turn off Internet sharing, turn off Airport, restart the Mac and the iPad and then create a new network. Turn on Airport and go through all of the steps again.
I use my iMac at work for the iPad Internet connection since I don't have WiFi and I will have an issue trying to connect every once in a while and I just start all over again and it has always worked for me.
Or just try restarting or rebooting the iPad, turn WiFi off and on again, forget the network and restart the iPad .... Just try some basic stuff.

  • MBA - slow internet/wifi then photo stream is enabled

I have problem with very slow internet /wifi connection when photo stream is enabled. I run some test. I'm conecting MBA to internet by WIFI network. When photo stream is enabled, ping reply time to my router is around 1000ms - 2000ms. When I turn off photo stream, ping reply time is around 1ms, and internet works fast. I've tested MBA with difrent access point and there is the same problem. I have 2.5GB of photos on iCloud.
What can I do to fix this?

Photo Stream uses a lot of bandwidth. The fix is to disable it.

I have only just got an iphone 4 which I immediately updated to ios7 so have nothing to compare it with. But it doesn't even see networks that come up clear on the macbook. Same thing for a colleague in the same spot. previously I had an android phone which picked up just fine.

  • I have two Macs: an MBA and the new iMac.  Is there a way to have iTunes and all the content in it identical on both machines?

I have two Macs: an MBA and the new iMac.  Is there a way to have iTunes and all the content in it identical on both machines?

Yes you can copy the content to your new machine and use Home Sharing to keep the content identical
Connect the two machines via an ethernet cable it is 3 times faster than Wifi. Turn wifi off on one machine to enforce ethernet connection
In System Preferences, Sharing turn on File Sharing
    Then
Copy the music/itunes folder from the Macbook pro to the music/ folder on the imac
Both machines should now have the same library
    Disconnect H the ethernet cable
Set up Home Sharing and under Settings at the bottom of the Home Sharing page. Select to transfer new purchases.
Do the same on the other machine.
Then when you r machines are connected by wifi and each time you start itunes it will transfer your new purchases
    Setting up home sharing

What is the make & model of your home Wi-Fi router that you are attempting to connect your G5 iMac to? Which exact model of iMac do you have?
What wireless security type is your router using: WEP, WPA, or WPA2? If you temporarily disable wireless security, can the iMac connect to it now?

  • Lumia 920 Facebook connection very slow over WiFi ...

Since the Portico update the connection to Facebook both in the People and Me hub as well as in the Facebook app is very slow over WiFi, whilst still good over 4G/LTE (with WiFi off). The connection to the Nokia account also appears to have a similar problem. All other accounts and apps have good speed over both cellular and WiFi connections.
    Any ideas anybody?
PS: FYI, a bit more info about the history and context: When I noticed the problem the first time after the update, I tried to solve it by deleting and re-adding my Facebook account on the phone. Unfortunately, that made me lose my Me hub tile, so I decided to do a full reset. That again unfortunately got stuck on the togg wheels, so I restored the phone using Nokia Care Suite with the latest firmware, and restored my accounts, apps and settings from scratch. Everythings seems to work fine now, except the above mentioned Facebook and Nokia account connectivity problem.

Did you somehow solve this problem?
I have the same issue here with my Lumia 920.
However I have already found out that it only applies to my home Wifi. All other Wifi networks i was connecting to did work flawlesly.
I need to note that all other devices on my home network are using facebook without a glitch. Only Lumia has some problems with it.

Why is the transportation C02e 4x higher for Macbook pro 15" compared to iMac 27".

Both are great machines but have rather different purposes...while the graphics are good on the MBP, the iMac graphics would be a major step up.  Especially if you want to do heavy duty photo or video work, and heavy game use.  If the MBP is getting hot and running the fans hard, that would point you to the iMac with its higher end graphics capability.
The photo and video work would be much easier with the larger screen and higier end graphics and faster cpu.

  • Is it possible to load my Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop CS2 on my wife's new iMac version 10.7?

    Greetings All,
Is it possible to load my Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop CS2 on my wife's new iMac version 10.7?  So far, no luck.  Message says: "won't support programs for Power PC"
Apparently it's time to dole out a chunk of change and upgrade.  Your advice, comments, suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks,
    George

    George:
Always an excellent idea to have a backup somewhere. Make sure you purchase an external drive that is big enough that you can create a few partitions. That way you can have a partition for the "clone" and then maybe two more partitions: one for your files as a backup and one for your wife's. And you can move the external around between your computer and your wife's, as long as they are both Macs.
And for cloning, I suggest and recommend Carbon Copy Cloner:

  • How can I fix a VERY slow App Store on My iMac 10.9.3 ?

How can I fix a VERY slow App Store on My iMac 10.9.3 ?

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
If possible, connect to your router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

I have an Itel based iMac on which I created a Wifi network using Airport. My iPhone5 uses the Wifi on my iMac and still works. My problem is that I can't remember the Wifi password and it is not in my Keychain. What can I do so that I can connect other devices to my Wifi?

Read the router's user manual on how to change your password.
If you are going to select another password, make sure it's one that you will NEVER forget AND no one else can figure it out.  Print it out & keep in a safe place.  A place that ONLY you know about AND never forget.

Had the same issue and finally solved it.  After the upgrade to Mavericks our 2 new Macbook Airs stopped connecting automatically to Wifi while the older machines the kids had still worked fine.
Bought a new airport extreme and problem solved.   Our Airport Extreme was about 5 years old and was probably not compatible with the new OSX.
BTW this was after trying everything people suggested on this forum and a 4 hour marathon tech support call with Apple where we reinstalled the OSX.
***** to need to spend $200 but glad the problem got solved.
New extreme is also mega fast so its all good.
