Slow MBP - Help

I've got a pretty much maxed spec MBP and it seems to be running real slow even when I'm running not much in the way of demanding software. Right now I'm running one Safari, one MS Entourage and one Mail... and the MBP fairly regularly hangs for 6+ seconds when I ask it to perform a new task. For instance if I click on Dashboard it hangs, has a think, I get the spinning beachball and 5-10 secs later Dashboard pops up.
When my MBP is left alone for 15 mins, screen saver comes on and I come back and click on the mouse, again, I get the spinning beachball and a good 5-10 second wait for my MBP to come back on line.
If I look at StatBook Pro while in Dashboard I can see that virtually ALL my 2GB mem is being used in various different forms even though I'm running what I consider to be a pretty undemanding software set.
Any ideas...??
Many Thanks
MBP 2.16Ghz 2GB Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I do have that widget installed. It's my favorite! Sadly I am :ahem: at work and do not have access to my machine.
Another fun thing you might want install is "Menu Meters" (find it via version tracker). Launch it from the System Preferences. From there it will put numbers up in your menu bar such as processor usage and memory totals.
One other thing to note: I lauched PowerPoint a couple of times and noticed that it didn't free up the processors after I closed it! It was running them at 100%. Using command-tab, see if you have any Applications showing that you aren't actually running.

  • Slow MBP: Help with EtreCheck and MacOS X reinstall

    Hi there,
I've already posted about my MacBook Pro which is really annoying me.
I know 2GB RAM is not enough, but I can't afford buying extensions and would like to cope with this laptop for another 6 months, then probably get a PC as many programs that I need for my studies are not working with Mac.
Anywho, I've been told that my EtreCheck report looks awful and I need to clean up my mac. My friend used to install a lot of unnecessary stuff on my laptop and I suppose I have a lot of leftovers.  Could you please help me with this? I am currently backing up my files with Time Machine. Once I finish, what should I do to completely reinstall and clean up my laptop?
Please help a woman in need!

    Remove Clean My Mac: http://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/how-to-uninstall-cleanmymac-2
If you are not using TeamViewer, remove it also. If you had it running while you ran Etrecheck, then it doesn't need to be removed.

  • My I photo is taking forever to load. When it does load everything runs super slow. Help!

My I Photo is taking forever to load my pictures. When they finally load, everything I do  in I photo is super slow. Help!

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • Need help restoring a very slow MBP ... no OS Disc

I have been asked by a colleague to 'sort out' her MacBook Pro.
It has been running increasingly slow and often becomes non-responsive.
Now it is not letting me log into the normal (not administrator) account - accepts password and takes me back to login.
The administrator account wich does not get used has no problem logging in - but is equally as slow.
She doesn't have/can't find the OS discs to reinstall.
Also, when plugging in an ext. HD, Time Machine does not recognise it as an available device... is it safe to manually move files onto the HD?
Someone has suggested creating a new user account, moving files over, deleting old account.
Will this have any impact on the slow running of the MBP in general?
    About This Mac:
    Mac OS X
    Version 10.6.8
Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 6GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
I have been waiting for 'Opening System Profiler' to load assuming it will display more information but I have been waiting for 20 mins now.
    Please Help!
(I'm relatively new to Mac products, used Windows for years!)

You only have 2GB of RAM, which is not enough to run OS X 10.10 smoothly (it's the bare minimum requirement to run it at all). Consider buying more at http://eshop.macsales.com (there are other vendors as well). Find the correct RAM for your model by searching for your iMac's model identifier - iMac8,1. Also look at their installation videos.
You have several failed Apple launch agents, you may need to re-install OS X to fix that. Boot the computer while holding down the Command ⌘ and R keys at the same time. This will boot to the Recovery partition. Choose the reinstall OS X option.

  • Slow MBP... Help with EtreCheck Results please?

    Problem description:
My MBP is running incredibly slow! For instance, just typing sometimes bogs the system down, and it definitely cannot handle multitasking like it used to, or open programs quickly.
In June of 2014 my Hard Drive crashed. It was under Apple Care and they replaced it. I lost Apple Care in July, and since June it has progressively gotten slower. When Yosemite came out, I reformatted my computer as new and restored from an external hard drive back up. I have watched the activity monitor and the RAM doesn’t seem to be under any pressure (solid green all the way across), and the CPU doesn’t seem to go that high either (50%). I have tried all the initial steps of uninstalling what I thought could be slowing it down (i.e., Norton and some other things) in addition to taking away all start up programs except dropbox.
I'm willing to do just about anything to get this computer through another 18 months... and if someone could find a way to get 36 months out of it I'll give you a million points.
Thanks in advance for the community's help. You guys rock.
P.S. Had a little issue with Carbonite a while back. I think it is taken care of though.

I use the freeware, EasyFind 4.9.3, to search for and delete unwanted files.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning

    Hi epwebb,
The good news is that you have a good MBP. It seems to be hugged by that google crapware that you have on your Mac. They spy on you, use the bandwidth that you pay for and hugging your Mac obviously at your cost.
Your Mac should be motoring. Look here and here to get the Mac to perform as it should
    Have fun

  • MBP slow/freezing HELP!

    Hello guys!
    I have this MBP 13'' Mac OS X 10.7.5 running a 2.4GHz i5, 4GB RAMs and 500GB storage.
The problem started yesterday when I was typing on Word and I copy pasted something from the net (chrome browser) then it froze.
I waited for around 5minutes and still frozen with the spinning wheel, then I decided to turn it off by pressing power for 10 seconds restarted my
MBP then now it running so slow on start-up and apps are very slow to open like around 5 minutes. Every action that I try to do like clicking on the
apple in the upper left it freezes showing a spinning wheel and it will take time to show the drop down options.
I checked disk utility and it said that HD is ok, done verify/permission verify and repair.
I checked the activity monitor noting the ram/CPU usage and its normal it even tells that 2GB of ram is not use.
It shows not responding in the activity monitor if you open an app for around 5mins then it opens or it will crash.
I already done the 2 kinds of reset and did not work.
BUT it opens normally in Safe mode.
    Please help. thanks!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press thereturn key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press returnthree times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Upgrade to Mavericks results in a slow MBP

    Hi-
Upgraded my mid-2010 MBP to Mavericks a few months ago and it's been very slow (takes a long time to launch processes/switch between processes). I was hoping the speed would fall in-line after a few days like it has for so many others; unfortunately it has not. Creating a new Safari or Chrome tab also takes an inordinate amount of time.
The computer has 4GB of RAM, which is fully utilized. From ActMon, it doesn't look like I'm swapping much (or in some cases at all). I generally have ~10 Safari tabs open at once, Mail running in the background, and iTunes running in the background. If I can't get any resolution, I'll try a "dd if=/dev/zero of=/<machdd>" and start over with a USB flashdrive install.
Any help is greatly appreciated - attached is the EtreCheck.
    Thanks!
    Tim

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • 10.6.5 is causing kernel panics in Safari -- 6 mo. old i5 MBP, Help!

    Hi everyone,
I have a 6 month old MBP 15" i5 with a 128GB SSD. I ordered it brand new from Apple, never opened the case, screwed around with the RAM, etc. which I believe is a main factor in Kernel Panics.
I have repaired permissions after booting from the original CD and without, as well as verified the disk which "appeared to be OK." I've also run the Apple Hardware Test off of Application Disk 2 by holding "D" at startup, and no errors were found.
Externally, I have a LaCie D2 Quadra HD daisy-chained with an Apogee Duet into FW800, and an iPhone dock into USB. Everything else is Bluetooth.
I have never once experienced a kernel panic with this computer until the 10.6.5 update the other day -- and I've used my computer the exact same for the last 6 months. After that, I've experienced 3 kernel panics this week alone -- all three in Safari. Usually when I'm doing a lot, or I've opened a lot of tabs, or even when I navigate to certain pages without any tabs open, it doesn't matter -- the beach ball appears for a few seconds, then the slow gray-colored transition appears with the "you need to restart your computer" message. At this point, I simply don't know what to do. I think the key lies in the kernel panic logs. Here are all three:
    1:

If someone could help me debug these, I'd greatly appreciate it. There are other active threads right now with people having the same issue but the difference is that a lot of them have installed RAM after the fact, creating some kind of conflict. Regardless, I think 10.6.5 may have corrupted something, or is corrupt by nature.

It just says what was running at the time the panic was logged

but it'd be tough for Safari to create a panic of itself, and the others are all apple & unlikely to be a problem... which'd suggest hardware then, but it's easier/quicker to remove those 3rd party kexts than to run hardware test or reinstall/update again.

  • New broadband connection - very slow- please help

    Hi,
On 3rd of May (last Thur) I got my new phone and broadband installed. My broadband speed is soo slow that I have to buy internet dongle to get back onto proper internet.
I know about 10 days stabilization period- phoned to India couple of times and being told after 10 days I will get a better normal connection. I just dont belive that. Today is 8th day of 10days waiting and there is no changes at all! I need internet for my uni.

    thank u in advance
    1) I am connected to the master socket. I've tried to connect to test socket but things weren/t going improve.
    2) Tried wireless connection and used ethernet cable. For both connections the broadband is slow.
    3) Done the quiet line test- no faults.

  • Slow MBP. Should I upgrade to a new computer?

    Hi all,
    Situation:
I have one of the very first macbook pros with 1.83ghz core duo, 80 gig hard drive and upgraded 2gb of ram. Lately, my workhorse of a mac has been slowing WAAAAAAAY down or freezing, specifically, while using keynote and numbers at the same time, or other high performance needing apps like movie editing software. I've noticed this happening even before installing leopard and there have been lots of problems after installing leopard (I didn't do an upgrade, I wiped my hard drive and did a fresh install).
During a recent project where I was putting together a presentation, my mac was intermittently freezing and unfreezing while doing some calculations. I was so frustrated that I hooked up my external hard drive, which has a backup install of Tiger, and did all my work using Tiger. It worked flawlessly.
Oh yeah, it's been running about 20 degrees hotter than usual, too, for the past few months. I use Fan Control and I've been trying to monitor the temp using that
    Question:
    - Is it my hard drive or just an overused, first-gen, slower, intel chip?
    - Is it Leopard that's causing the problems?
    - Would a new internal 7200 rpm hard drive in my MBP (which I'm confident in doing) help or should I just save up and by the latest and greatest MBP when I get the cash?
By the way, I've done several diagnostic tests and everything comes back fine.
Thanks in advance for your comments.

I just talked to a buddy of mine who works at apple and he suggests that my processor is in the mid-range of handling Leopard. It's very disappointing.
Yup, Leopard runs handily on processors as slow as a 1 GHz G4, the kind my parents have in their old eMac, with only 1GB of RAM. Leopard runs notably faster than Tiger did. While your processor isn't a Core 2 Duo, it's still more than twice as fast as Apple's stated minimum spec, and it's Intel, which anecdotally seems to run Leopard better than PowerPC processors do.
So the good news is there's something else going on, and you don't need to upgrade unless you really, really want to.

  • Slow MBP after Yosemite install and other concerns

    Hi
There are a few discussions on this topic, they did not help due to the fact that I have no clue what to do or if I even have a problem.
    The problem:
My MBP is slower after I installed Yosemite, sometimes the wheel of death pops up and freezes what I am busy with in Safari. Apps take longer to open than usual.
I have added EtreCheck results from this morning.
    Please give advice on:
    How to improve the speed.
Whether there is there something in the results that I should be concerned about.
    Hardware that should be updated.
Should I get an app to delete or prevent unnecessary files (from apps?) from being saved without my knowledge.
    Thanks
    EtreCheck version: 2.1.6 (109)

    Hi epwebb,
The good news is that you have a good MBP. It seems to be hugged by that google crapware that you have on your Mac. They spy on you, use the bandwidth that you pay for and hugging your Mac obviously at your cost.
Your Mac should be motoring. Look here and here to get the Mac to perform as it should
    Have fun
