Slow Modem Users-Please Test Download Speed & Report Back

Dear iMac G5 Users,
Several of us have tested download speeds using our built-in 56K modems. Nobody has been able to get our iMacs to download at anything over about 29 kbps or 3.6 KBytes/sec. That looks to be about half of what is advertised. (No surprise really - I can only burn DVD-R's at half Apple's advertised speed). My old G3's modem will easily download at least 5.8 KBytes/sec or 46K. That's much more reasonable for a 56K modem.
Could you users check your download speed at some place like: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and post your results here?

I did the Speakeasy test from my home, and I got 24 kbps. However, this is the same speed
I got on an iMac DV with its built-in modem.
Yesterday I took my G5 iMac over to a friend's house; I wanted to test the modem
speed from a better line, and to verify that the airport card worked properly.
When I connected, Internet Connect app reported 50667 kbps.
When I did the Speakeasy test, it reported 43 kbps. This location used to
get 40000 on a Bondi iMac when it first came out (OS 8.1) so I figured this was about right.

  • Resetting my modem has killed my download speed bu...

Hi there, can anyone suggest a reason and hopefully a cure for this?
After teething problems with my connection initially (sorted by 2 engineer visits), I'd been getting "reasonable" 4-5mbps download speeds over the last 3 months. Gradually download speeds degraded to under 2mbps and and I felt obliged and intrigued to see if a modem reset would improve matters.
The first reset led to a lot of dropped connections, but since a second reset, the connection seems to be consistent, but only a 0.48mbps download speed!!
I've been getting a consistent circa 0.9mbps upload speed during the last three months, which is ok and this seems unaffected by the resets. I'm getting the stats from Speedtest.net.
So my question is will the modem find its download speed in time or do I have a noisy line (sorry no phone to check) or is it something else. I'm also a bit unclear why these BT modems are so flakey when it comes to resetting them.
    Thanks in advance

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal  this test would help establish any line problems and a cheap corded phone would be beneficial  - about £5 from argos
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • SLOW Xbench User Interface Test

    Hi all,
    MBP early 2008 2.5GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD (130GB free), 10.5.7 and all updates.
Since I got this machine, it has not seemed any faster than my 867MHz TiBook running Tiger. Today I ran Xbench twice and it showed an extremely low User Interface Test result (12.91 at 59.25 refresh/sec).
I know Xbench hasn't been updated for awhile, but looking at a few other Intel Mac scores, I didn't see any scores even close to this one.
So, has anyone else run Xbench? Anyone care to give it a try and report results on that part of the test?
    Thanks
(PS I've run all the maintenance I can think of, checked Activity Monitor, etc etc etc. Next step is to reinstall OS, but rather not if there's anything more to learn about this first.)
(PSS First run I had Time Machine turned on and external FW HD connected, so disconnected that. Also, just remembered I am running File Vault, and wondering if that's the culprit.)

    no idea...
    but try to disable filevault...
If you want to dream on the old days and to see what Apple don't want us to use now, make a ram disk (it will not be consistent after a reboot, as Apple prevent it... )
try to run a xbench on it...
    yes, 908 ...
try to run your hardisk benchmark.
yes, only 27 or a little more...
So, what all the buzz around with flash disk is just bullsh.t, as , since 1995 at least, Apple made RAM disk, and BOOTABLE until the G3...
I'm quite sure that we could have a 400 % more quick os X sytem if we could run it on Ram disk...
I used it for second life, as browsers can have another cache location (or, I didn't find how to do it)
it's about 20 % faster, and it is not shocking the hard disk, as the more you write and erase, the more your disk work.
Sorry to be a little of topic, but a Xbench thread could be good in that 'using your mac book pro , original" just to see how we can speed it a little bit, or not
(I use "Make RAM Disk 1.0", no bug , on 10.4.11)

  • Is there way to automate testing download speed

I'm having big trouble with my IP with speeds bouncing all over the place. I would like to automate Safari going to Speakeasy in a new Safari window, selecting Los Angeles, waiting for test to complete, snapping a screenshot of the results, with that screenshot put in a specific folder. Is this possible, & if so, how do I do it? I would like to do it say every hour.
    Thanks,
    Harris

We are currently forcing the entire message (writeTo(ByteArrayOutputStream)) to minimize our MessagingExceptions. Should we only do it when get an Exception ?Writing out the message doesn't really help. JavaMail doesn't cache the data from the message so when you access
the data later, it's still going to go back to the server. If you want to ensure there's only one place where you might
get an exception while accessing message data, you need to make a complete copy of the message (e.g., using the
MimeMessage copy constructor) and then operate on the copy. Although the problem with that approach is that it's
very inefficient; you might as well be using POP3 instead of IMAP. I think you need a better approach for dealing
    with exceptions...
Also, when you say that IMAP supports what we're trying to do, do you mean that (assuming we stop calling the writeTo method) its only the part.saveFile() call that actually downloads or fetches the attachment from the store?Yes.

  • SBLiveWare 3.0 iso torrent for SB0100 on 9x/2000 - Please test download for

    http://www.msfn.org/board/Creative-SBLi've-5-SB000-Li'veWare-30-t229.html
    http://www.mininova.org/tor/707836
In hopes of helping out some folks on another thread in the above forum I have been attempting to provide an iso of my retail box SoundBlaster Li've 5. SB000 Creative install cd. They were interested in working vxd drivers and software on 98SE for the SB000 that included the old SoundBlaster 6 emulation for both Windows and MS-DOS Mode that the old Li'veWare 3.0 provided.
It appeared that the torrent tracker I included when creating the torrent would often be reported by my torrent client as not working, so I added some more free trackers using a list on a how-to page for folks to add to their torrent clients. The denis one appears to be reported as working by my client.
Those folks were piecing together how to install some of the Creative software that the older Li'veWare releases did not have the inf for the SB000 included and so both the drivers and software were a struggle to get installed and working, but my cd actually came with this model card and so should offer the whole setup seamlessly.
?The only thing needed to get the vxd to install is to copy the cd to the hard dri've and change the AUDIO. INI where it has to install WDM's for 98SE and Me from a value of to a value of 0. (Change the file from read only so you can change the file, then make it read only again.)? Then just run setup from the hard dri've and it'll install everything fine. It's how I used to use that card on 98SE.
But I need more than the couple of guys over at that forum to at least start downloading the iso from my hard dri've. The torrent website deletes torrents that have no activity over so many days, and my Comcast cable upload speeds make more seeders really necessary for anyone to get the torrent download moving at an acceptable rate.
I also don't want to keep my computer on forever. Just a quick upload of this for anyone interested. Maybe someone who pays for access on one of the normal download/upload sites anyway can be helpful? by downloading this, making rar files out of it, and posting it for others to download on a more long-term basis. I just want this to be a few quick days for my involvement if possible.
Since I've seen no activity on folks getting the download yet, I just wonder if it's setup correctly. Can someone help out by at least trying to get it's

Yes, it finished and I see it there at the link on my previous post.
No one has replied that they've checked it out yet on my thread over at msfn.org, but then I just put the working link up and there likely aren't too many folks interested. ?
It was just that I go back a long way with the folks on that 98 forum and couldn't see letting them suffer trying to piece together the old Li'veWare just for that card when Creative already did the work for them on that cd. Most folks who wound up with the SB000 didn't buy it retail like I did, and Creative never released the old 9x/Me drivers or software for it besides that cd that few have.
Badboy has an image of the later cd's that install the 252 drivers and the newer style software on 9x/XP/2000 but on Windows 98SE/Me the older VXD's and the SB6 emulation offer better 9x performance. No parametric EQ, and the PlayCenter needs updating for CDDB and some security fixes but the PlayCenter update is still offered by Creative legacy downloads I think.

  • Leopard user: please test themes of iMovie 6.0.4 with 4:3 DV

    Hello,
it looks as nobody has a solution for my problem with themes. Either nobody uses themes any longer or there is no one who had this problems and knows a solution. To be sure I would like to have someone test the following:
    - ingest a few minutes DV video (4:3 aspect ratio)
    - place clips onto the timeline
    - add a lower third of the "Passage" theme using a part of the video for the drop zone
    - apply this clip after positioning the playhead in a clip in the timeline
Does iMovie render this clip using 4:3 aspect ratio or do you get a varying letterbox?
Is the rendered clip brighter than the original?
Is the rendered clip placed at the playhead position or at the end of the sequence?
Please post results to this thread.
    Thanks,
    Dirk

I have been using Mac OS X 10.3.9 with iMovie HD 6.0.3 so I haven't been able to use the themes which need at least 10.4 before.
Anyway, I jumped straight to 10.5 two months ago so now I can test it.
Yes, I see the same issues (PAL):
I get narrow black letterbox bands at top & bottom and the rendered clip brighter than the original (the rendered clip is also deinterlaced with blend mode).
Is the rendered clip placed at the playhead position or at the end of the sequence?
I didn't quite understand that. The rendered clip begins at the start of the underlying media clip.

  • Intel Modem Users please read

There's an issue with Intel Modem drivers that's holding up the 2.6.16 kernel release, as explained by tpowa here. If you're using either of these drivers, please post here, to give him an idea of the numbers involved.

Yeah, I'm on the mailing list.  I'm just concerned about the whole "NO NON-GPL!!!!!!!" thing.  I don't use a hell of a lot of non-free, but the idea of simply refusing to allow them is badbadbad imo.  But then, I'm not RMS.
Well, GPL is by design incompatible to anything else.
I won't post an opinion now, since I don't have that modem anyway.

  • Very slow download speed on ipad 2

Okay folks I need your help.  I have just installed an Airport Extreme (newest model) wirless router and a new Motorola Sufboard modem and my interenet download speed is pretty good on the pc (23-25 Mbps).  However, when I run the speed test on my ipad 2 it is pathetic (.14 - .18 Mbps).  My iphone 4 is getting about the same download speed as well.  I have reset all devices, tried forgetting the network and then signing on again, but nothing helps.  What could be causing the slow download speed on the Apple products?

Okay I got it.  I went into the Airport Utility and changed the channel selection from automatic to manual and then I changed the channel to something different.  There are a lot of house in my neigborhood and I guess the default channel 6 was just way over crowded.  Just did another test on my iphone4 and got a download speed of 18.33 Mbps.  The ipad2 yielded a new speed of 24.24 Mbps.  Much better now.  Thanks!

  • Very slow download speeds on windows vista using boot camp.

Ok this is my problem. When ever I try to download something from the internet on my windows side the download goes very slow. When I go on my mac side and do the same download it goes a lot faster. So then I went to speedtest.net and my download speed came back around 5000 kbps, when I go into my windows side it goes about 500-1200 kbps. How can I get my download speeds to 5000 kbps like it is on my mac side? I have been trying this for a long time and trying many solutions. Any help will be appericated!
    Thanks!

    Start by troubleshooting networking.
    Drivers for your Windows chipset.
Include more details as to router, firmware, what MAC you have even?
I would never disable firwalls or AV and security settings but you don't want to have two firewalls running.
Most people complain that Windows is faster and their OS X is slow.
Also, wired or wireless? you have not given us anything to go by.

  • 3meg DSL Download speed running at dial-up speed

Since last week I’ve been getting DSL download speeds that are basically dial-up speeds.  I have the 3 meg plan and for the past 10 years or so, I came close to a 2 meg download connection speed regularly.
Last week my download speed basically disappeared.  I spent hours on the phone with Verizon Tech Support during the week.  (Their standared 72 hours to assign a service call after creating a service ticket is bogus.) A Verizon DSL tech spent 5 hours at my house on Saturday and said the problem is on VERIZON’S END with their servers.  He did it all, replaced internal wires, used his modem for the tests, checked speeds at the NID, took the router out of play, tried to get new wires from the service on the street, and still could not resolve the issue.
I show the correct 3360/864kbs connection on my DSL Modem (Actiontec GT701D) but my download speed is averaging 33K to 60K using 4 different speed tests.  DSL disconnects at random also. My upload speed is typically around 700kbs – where it should be.

    Attenuation (Downstream/Upstream): 119/30
This performance drop off is totally unacceptable.  What’s really interesting is that my service call has been closed out as “resolved”.  Which is obviously has not.  I am now being forced to go through support again to “diagnose” my problem.
I’ve been researching (painfully) these speed issues and have determined they are a chronic problem going back to at least 2006 for many DSL customers.  The issue seems to be they have oversold DSL services and overcrowd their local Central Office servers and routers.  There is supposed to be some performance issue regarding Redbank and Juniper switches.  Redbank is supposed to be more reliable and Juniper aren't so.  I also believe their latest “optimizing” software may also be part of the problem.
For the first time EVER, I am seriously considering converting to COMCAST because no one at Verizon (other than the DSL tech) will acknowledge they are the cause of my issue.
Anyone have a realistic idea as to what needs to be done at the Central Office to correct this issue?
    Thanks for your time.

Consider yourself lucky. I have had the 3Mb plan for over ten years and initially had regular speeds of 1.5 to 3.0...until a new development was put in a block away, they were connected to Verizon, and my speeds dropped to 205 kbps down/805 kbps up at the copper drop in my basement. Many calls to Verizon resulted in modem upgrades (currently the Westell 6100) and reassurances from Verizons foreign help desk that my service was performing normally. Promises of FIOS soon being available in my area (Cedar Brook, NJ) have kept me hanging on but I stopped holding my breath a few years ago.  Hopefully your service will be restored - mine most likely never will.

  • Download speed problems

Hello again, since Friday 10/10/14 my connection speeds have decreased, line seems to be reseting as my Bipac 7800 is showing an increase in download SNR and decrease in the connected speed, my normal speed is aprox 7000, the suprise is that the upload speed is showing an increase with a decrease in the SNR strange?. Attempts to lower the SNR using the Bipac 7800 have failed as the SNR is showing no change. Connected to Abbey wood exchange, simple things like refreshing tv and radio feeds in getiplayer took seconds now take 5-10 minutes.

    Hi All,
We are having an Transaction iview which is used by manager to generate reports, When the user tries to download the report to a local file the screen just hangs and nothing happens. We get an error at the IE status bar saying "Load: class Query not found". This the same when the user tries to upload selection criteria from an text file to execute the report. We are running EP7 with ECC5 as backend with Integrated ITS.

  • WRT54G download speeds

I have a 10Mbs DSL service. When I connect my PC directly to the DSL modem (Speedstream 6520), I can get full 10Mbs download.
When I set my modem to bridging mode and set up my WRT54G (ver. 6) between the modem and the PC, my download speed drops back to around 600Kbs.

  • IStat showning download speed, hd space decreasing while no download is shown

I noticed a download speed through my iStat Menus while working on my Mac Pro OSX 10.9 . I got info for my os hd.  after checking several times, the available drive space kept decreasing. I could find no files being downloaded, or open downloads. The only way to bring the download speed indicator back to 0 was to turn of my wifi and unplug my network cable. After doing that, my free disc space returned to the original figure. What can be going on here?

However, if you think it's wrong here are some suggestions that may help as wifi problems seem to crop up a lot on here and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a 'one fix' solution.
However, sometimes any one of the following can help although, unfortunately, not always. - in no particular order:
Check wifi security - if it's WEP change it to WPA or WPA2 (preferably, as it's more secure)
Change the wifi channel on the router
Create a new Network Location: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5289
    Reboot the router

How many thousands of Apple TV users have to scream their complaints before Apple will respond to the fury over the impossibly slow download speeds of movies bought through iTunes?

As jules says, your rate (currently at least) may be slow.
If it used to be good I wonder is your ISP is slowing ('throttling') your speed after you've used so many GB of a quota each day or month - check what they think you should be getting as a download speed.
While Apple's servers do occasionally play up, it's generally the ISP being slow not Apple.
If you're using Google's DNS servers that has caused issues for some.
Recommended speeds for near instant playback:
    SD         2.5Mbps
    720p      6 Mbps
