Slow motion (constant speed) rendering problem. ATTENTION PROs!

I have tried almost everything to try and fix my problem and now I am going insane!
I am editing a short promo featuring constant speed adjustments and video filters. When I render the video seems to drop frames and jutter. Why is this when i have only reduced the speed of the clips by 50% or 75% ? ?
I have put it through compressor several times and printed the video onto DVD to see if the problem lies within any other program, but i believe my problem is with final Cut HD.
The footage is HDV interlaced. I have made sure the frame blending options are checked although this makes no difference and have rendered it I dont know how many time.
Do I need to bring the original rushes out of the bin and adjust the speed again from scratch...essentially start again?
HELP! I am going mad!
Mac Book Pro (2ghz intel / 2gb memory)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Final Cut Studio HD

I have done it!
I firstly made a quicktime movie, using current settings, to create a single HDV clip. I then created a new sequence, titled HDV, and opened up the sequence settings. Going into the video processing tab I changed field dominance to 'upper odd' and motion to 'best'. I then dropped the new HDV clip into the timeline. At this point I sent this new clip to Compressor and chose the 'best quality 90min 16/9', MPEG 2 two pass + Dolby. EXPORT....HAPPY DAYS! The results are great. Perhaps I could make it better by stopping the footage down to SD first?

  • HT3176 How can the slow motion playback speed be adjusted on Apple TV (pause and clicking right/left)?

I am looking to adjust the paused slow motion playback speed of Apple TV. On one of my Apple Tv's when paused I can click right or left to view tv in frame advance (or one second advance) on a different Apple TV there does not appear to be any advance even after multiple clicks. But, it will jump 10 seconds when paused and left or right is held down as it should.
Third gen. (A1427) Apple TV Software version on both 7.0.3

Unfortunately with that speed you are not going to have a good experience with HD streaming. I would make sure everything is set to stream SD. Go into the settings - iTunes Store and you can switch there for any purchases/rentals made through them.
If you use Netflix (or other streaming sites) go into your account(s) and see if you can switch to a lower quality stream. I know Netflix has that in place.

  • Slow-motion blinking after rendering.

Hey! I have a big problen on Premiere Elements 10. When i time-strech a clip, and i render it. It starts blinking blue! Like every 5 frame or so. I noticed this after editing for while, so it would be best if i did not have to start all over again. Can anyone help me with this? This is a big problem for me sice i edit a lot of skateboarding vids, where slow motion is a must.  Please ansver quick

Also, what model of camcorder did this video come from and what format and resolution is it?
When you started your Premiere Elements project, which settings did you select?
If you are using non-camcorder video or you haven't properly set up your project, it could lead to the issues you're describing.
Also, how much did you slow your video?

  • Slow motion jerkiness when rendered to DVD

I've upgraded to iMovie HD 6 and I am working on projects that I started in iMovie 4. This has happened because I am working on 5 or 6 projects at the same time and I have only now got to the point where I want them on DVD.
All slow motion clips look fine in iMovie, but when they are rendered to DVD they are incredibly jerky. BUT, not all of them. This seems ridiculous, if they were all jerky OK, but only some of them.
Does anybody have a solution, or do I have to re-install iMovie 5.
Please don't suggest JSE software as there are far too many clips to be exporting and re-importing.
    IMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

As a bug, some early iMovie HD version (AFAIR v5)didn't deinterlace slo-mo clips. This produced terrible shaky motion on an interlaced TV if the source material was interlaced.
Later versions fixed this. If this is the case, then you must re-render those clips, re-import and render them or use JES Deinterlacer to deinterlace the shaky clips.

  • Slow motion and speed changes blurry jittery - SOLUTION!

I Have had a few issues with slo mo and sped up stuff going blurry or jittery on me.
This is from HD from a HC3 down converted (camera does this) to SD anamorphic (pal).
I think i have found the solution - and welcome any exra content from more experienced heads than mine.
Of course there are limitations to how far you can slo mo before you get the jitters - anyway- here is my hot tip!
Change your speed (fit to fill , or modify speed) of the clip in the canvas (leaners - watch your sound timing - it can be thrown off if you have locked off ausio tracks) open up your clip from the canvas by double cliking it, tap the motion tab, cross the motion blur box - adjust the sample setting from 4 to 32 (i dont know exactly what this does but this is the key!, drop motion blur down to 0 %.
RENDER! voila! This has quickly resulted in some speed changed clips that hold their form rather nicely (no blurring or strobing , jitters etc - that have plagued me in the past - i'm doing lots of sport stuff where speed changes are common)
Hope this helps other relative newbs out there! And if anyone would care to comment on why this works i would be all ears!

I know what you mean, I end up with an extra frame if I set an in and out point then insert/overwrite replace or superimpose.
I find the quickest work flow is to
    0. mark the in point at start of clip
    1. copy the clip, command c
    2. go to the end of the sequence, end
    3. paste clip
    4. change speed, look at duration of clip, change speed %, command j
    5. change duration back to original duration,
    6. cut clip from end of time line,
    7. return to in point and paste clip.
I find this does give me control over the clip, does not affect the timeline and is frame accurate.
I agree you should be able to change the clip speed without affecting the duration.
    The alternative is as Andy described, fit to fill, here is an alternitive way of doing/describing this process;
adjust the out point of the clip to the new point you want,
move the clip out of the space on the timeline where you want the clip with the speed change to go,
place the CTI in the space where you want the new clip to go,
double click on the clip you want to adjust, opening it in the viewer,
drag the clip from the viewer to the canvas and the fit to fill option will appear along with all of the other options,
this will also do what you want, I believe there is no one click solution.
Someone please prove me wrong! I would love to be able to "command j" in to the speed dialog box, click on a check box that says keep duration or in/out points and simply change the duration.

  • IMovie 09 - Slow motion and speed adjustment of clips

I was trying to adjust the speed of my clips in a project. When I double clicked on the clip, it told me that I needed to convert the clip before I can adjust the speed. So, I click the button to convert the clip but it doesn't allow me to adjust the speed.
Any ideas out there? Anyone come across this? Is there something wrong with my clip? Help...

This has been brought up before here.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1900630&tstart=0
It seems to be a combination of codec types and footage fps that causes this. Jon Walker did indepth test in that thread.
For example, interframe codecs like MPEG4 seems to prefer conversion. Intraframe codec movies (AIC, PhotoJPEG...) are less picky, but they need to be in NTSC compatible fps. (29.97 and 23.98, instead of 30 and 24.) Above thread was about a Quicktime movie from LX3 camera with 24fps. At its native 24fps it needed to be converted before speed change, but after conforming fps to NTSC friendly 23.98 in Cinema Tools, it became speed adjustable without conversion.

  • Cannot export slow motion w/o ghost images

    Hello everyone,
The home movies and video works in my computer look exactly as I want them to and they export to QuickTime perfectly in "DV Full Quality." My problem is that the movies export both to the camera and to the DVD burner with awful ghost imagery in the slow motion clips. With my earlier version of iMovie, the slow motion rendered just fine to the camera, so I could at least create VHS tapes to share with family and friends. Now the movies export with the jittery ghost images. Color and sound are fine, it's just the slow motion that creates a problem. I'm so frustrated cuz I upgraded to solve the problem and I feel like my works are "trapped" in my computer--I just want to send videos and DVDs to family! IF I upgrade (again) to a new computer (G5?) or the latest Toast, will this solve the problem? Is there anything that can be done? Please know that I am a novice in computer language and need to be spoken to like a small, small child... Sorry for the length of this complaint and THANK YOU for any help!
    Katiefish1

    Hello Bengt!
Well, as it turns out, I don't have iDVD (or whatever it is I need to activate iDVD in iMovie...), but, as I was trying to find it, up popped the prompt I was looking for and had tried to find in the iMovie "help" thingie -- "you have some slow motion clips that need to be rendered, ..." and my problems are now solved!
So, I couldn't follow your advice exactly, but, because I tried, the solution presented itself unexpectedly.
Thank you, thank you! I don't have to buy a new computer (today)

  • My 13" Mac Pro behaves like everything is in slow motion. Takes forever to do anything, on or offline. Would this be a software conflict or a hardware problem?

My 13" Mac Pro behaves like everything is in slow motion. Takes forever to do anything. Wondering if this is a software issue or a hard drive problem?

    Maybe some maintenance will help:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation.  TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible;  Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided.  Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.  Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Intermittant problems with slow motion and crash of Premiere Pro

Many complain about Premiere Pro's instability.
Since a couple of days I have the same problem. Every time I want to navigate from A to B, Adobe seems to either introduce a severe SLOW MOTION effect on it's own accord, that I never put in !!!, or it just CRASHES with an error message along the lines "Problem, Try again" or similar.
This is utterly frustrating !!! I have been trying for over 6 hours today to get this remedied, but no luck.
Looking back over the past days, the problems seem to have grown exponentially both in frequency and in duration.
Of course, this is not about the program, but about the Premiere Pro Forums.
Is there a 300-day refund period for Jives???
I suggest you use that opportunity Adobe. This is

    OK, that makes sense.
    OS: Vista 64 Business
Browser: Firefox 3.5.2 and IE 8.06
    Symptoms:
    1. The connection has been reset, try again. Often after 15 minute waits.
    2. Nothing happens, just waiting for Adobe and even after 30 minutes, still waiting.
    3. After posting, nothing happens. You press the post button, nothing for ages. You press Cancel, nothing.

  • Slow Motion Problems

I've been using FCP now for many projects, and this is the first time I have had this problem. I will use slow motion on a clip and render it. But when I play the clip back, it will skip ahead in the clip, and then freeze. For example, people walking down the street. The clip is 3 seconds and I slow it to 6 seconds. As people are walking, about every 5 frames the picture jumps. Then at 4 seconds into the clip it freezes and plays that frame for the remaining 2 seconds. I never had this problem before, and I'm at a loss as to what is wrong. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm almost at the point where I want to just reinstall the whole FCS!

It depends on the formats you import. Are you slowing your footage down -100%? make sure you have constant speed checked. Maybe your time remapping it.

  • Slow motion problem

I'm using Shake's adaptive re-timing, but when I set the video to anything less than .5 speed (like .33, or .15) the rendered footage looks jerky and jitters back and forth when it interpolates the frames.
I don't think this could be due to the deinterlacing, because it's the same despite what I set the deinterlacing to.
MacBook Pro 17" Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.8) 200 GB HD

Retiming techniques have their limits. You can get optimal results beetween 0 and 50 percent max (normal speed to half speed). After that limit, the software doesn't have enough informations to reconstruct the huge time gaps between two frames, especially if the footage represents a high speed movement.
Keep in mind that the retiming possibilities are for retiming, not for slow motion, there is no miracle at this point.
For slow motion videos, use high speed cameras. Most DVCproHD cameras have the ability to record at 60fps full frame, that's a good start.
For interlaced video, if you accept to loose image quality on the vertical resolution, the 25i format can be converted in a sort of 50p, that's not bad for low budget projects!

  • Slow motion exporting problems

Hi there I had posted a topic with this same problem a couple of weeks ago and got some great suggestions, but unfortunately have to report that nothing has worked! I have tried deinterlacing, got a plugin from the net which was meant to have smoothed the slow motion, all looks well in the FCP and also in the exported quicktime, so does anyone know why it looks terrible when I watch the dvd back?
an example is that Someone took a photo of the couple I was filming, the flash looks square! And when I moved the camera around while filming, the edges of people look square. Have an idea it may be something to do with pixels, but I dont know what!
I am really at my wits end trying to find solutions and am about ready to fire my mac out the window! Can anyone help and save the mac?

It depends on the formats you import. Are you slowing your footage down -100%? make sure you have constant speed checked. Maybe your time remapping it.

  • After rendering clip is in slow motion

    Hi,
I've been using Gopro shots, which were converted to AVI with Cineform, following the CS 6 issue:
Sequence setting, and clip rate: 1280x720, 100fps, avi. after the rendering the clip takes place in slow motion on the timeline.
    Why is that?
If I use the same clip in the setting 1920x1080 60fps render remains the original speed, so it will not slow down.
    Thanks, Alex.

The pc can handle the yellow line, but not some of the cross fades.
The clip plays in normal speed after exporting the 1280x720, 100fps.
It only slows down on the timeline.
Any solution or idea what the problem is?
i put it in 60fps sequence because it doesnt slow down after rendering.

  • Slow Motion Problem with Motion 3

Hi, I am new to using Motion 3 and am having major frustration trying to get slow motion to work. I have applied a speed reduction to a short clip about 5 seconds in lengh. I've tried reducing the speed to 50% on one and about 10% on the other, booth using Optical Flow. But for some reason the resulting clip is very jerky and I have no idea why it is doing this. I have tried it with multiple other clips but it is till doing the same thing. Does anyone have any ideas? Please I am desperate to resolve this problem!
Here is a clip of the resulting problem if it helps...

Haven't heard a thing, but snce backward works and forward doesn't I think it is definitely a bug, not intentional. Since Verizon really doesn't watch these threads, these forums are users helping other users, I suggest you go over to dslreports.com, register if you are not already registered (it is free), and then post in the Verizon Direct forum there. Actual Verizon techs are there to help, and you can report the problem and no one other than Verizon reps can see any of your personal or account info.
