Help! Trying to put together a soccer video for my son's team; when I try to slo
motion a clip by 65-80 percent, I keep getting dropped frame reports and it's
very strobe-ish. looks horrible. I've turned off the RT unlimited, tried making a subclip and slo-moing that, can't seem to find the right formula. Any ideas??

It sounds like you need to 'render' the segment(s) in order to get smooth playback on the timeline. Exporting the file (to QT) will force the render or you can hit 'command-R'. Is there a colored bar on the timeline above the clip(s)? That's the sign that some rendering is required.
Otherwise timeline playback just tries to do its best. Tweaking the controls can limit the distortions and warnings you see, but only rendering can make them go away.

Slow Motion Problems

I've been using FCP now for many projects, and this is the first time I have had this problem. I will use slow motion on a clip and render it. But when I play the clip back, it will skip ahead in the clip, and then freeze. For example, people walking down the street. The clip is 3 seconds and I slow it to 6 seconds. As people are walking, about every 5 frames the picture jumps. Then at 4 seconds into the clip it freezes and plays that frame for the remaining 2 seconds. I never had this problem before, and I'm at a loss as to what is wrong. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm almost at the point where I want to just reinstall the whole FCS!

It depends on the formats you import. Are you slowing your footage down -100%? make sure you have constant speed checked. Maybe your time remapping it.

Slow Motion Problem with Motion 3

Hi, I am new to using Motion 3 and am having major frustration trying to get slow motion to work. I have applied a speed reduction to a short clip about 5 seconds in lengh. I've tried reducing the speed to 50% on one and about 10% on the other, booth using Optical Flow. But for some reason the resulting clip is very jerky and I have no idea why it is doing this. I have tried it with multiple other clips but it is till doing the same thing. Does anyone have any ideas? Please I am desperate to resolve this problem!

Haven't heard a thing, but snce backward works and forward doesn't I think it is definitely a bug, not intentional. Slow motion problem publishing from imovie to idvd

The problem is with publishing a film to idvd from imovie. The slow motion clips "glitch up" when viewed on idvd but run smoothly when viewed on imovie. The visual of the slow motion clip pauses as the audio continues. The movie picks up as normal after the slow motion scene ends. There is another point in the movie where a non-slow motion scene does the same thing (visual pauses and audio continues) until the end of the entire movie. The glitch stops before the credits (which is not filmed fottage). How do I fix this?

hmmmm..I would double check the other clips. Other than that I am stumped. Maybe someone else will have some ideas.

Twixtor slow motion problem

Hello, I was using twixtor to modify some footage I have and make it slow motion but for some reasons everytime I turn the speed down the footage is blurred and it has some kind bad frame timing. I modified the frames from the composition to be exactly like the ones from my footage so there shouldn't be any problem.

I took a look at the footage and it looks like the frame rate is wrong. It's hard to tell because you put up an FLV file and didn't post the original footage. The FLV does not contain all of the frames and the frame rate doesn't match the movie because there are a bunch of repeated frames.
Here are a few thoughts.
You shot with a DSLR so there are some rolling shutter problems that must be fixed to keep the car from distorting. There are plug-ins for that. Fix the rolling shutter problems (jello cam) first.
You may have interlacing issues and 3:2 pulldown issues. Make sure that every frame of the movie is properly interpreted. You can do this by dragging the original clip into the new comp icon, then doubling the frame rate of the composition, then interpreting the footage as interlaced. If the footage is interlaced you'll see a different frame every time you advance one frame. If you see 2 or 3 different frames, then 2 duplicate frames, the footage has 3:2 pulldown. You must remove it. If, after you set footage interpretation to separate fields you only see pairs of frames, then the footage is truly progressive.
Once you have the footage properly interpreted make sure that the interpretation is exactly copied to the appropriate fields in Twixtor and experiment with all the settings, isolate the background, and you should get acceptable results.
None of these suggestions will work if your footage is misinterpreted. If you want to post the original footage to You Send It or Dropbox I'll gladly take a look when I can.

Slow motion problem

I'm using Shake's adaptive re-timing, but when I set the video to anything less than .5 speed (like .33, or .15) the rendered footage looks jerky and jitters back and forth when it interpolates the frames.
I don't think this could be due to the deinterlacing, because it's the same despite what I set the deinterlacing to.

Retiming techniques have their limits. You can get optimal results beetween 0 and 50 percent max (normal speed to half speed). After that limit, the software doesn't have enough informations to reconstruct the huge time gaps between two frames, especially if the footage represents a high speed movement.
Keep in mind that the retiming possibilities are for retiming, not for slow motion, there is no miracle at this point.
For slow motion videos, use high speed cameras. Most DVCproHD cameras have the ability to record at 60fps full frame, that's a good start.
For interlaced video, if you accept to loose image quality on the vertical resolution, the 25i format can be converted in a sort of 50p, that's not bad for low budget projects!

Jerky Slow Motion with FCE

Hi,
I have final cut express 4, and I'm making a movie, part of it is pictures, and the other part video. I decided to make the pictures HD because they look better, but my video is SD. However, when I make a master sequence of my pictures and video sequences, slow motion in my SD video looks interlaced and jerky. I got rid of the interlace with the De-interlace filter, but I can't get rid of the jerky slow motion. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Actually, what I did was I put the HD pictures into a non-HD master timeline, which is basically what iDVD would do anyway, and the pictures looked better than if I made them in SD, and that way, my slow motion looked fine.

I'm having problems slowing a clip down. I know how to do it but when i change the percent to 50 from 100 i get a message tha says "general error" and the viewer window turns red and says unable to display video.

It may be that you are trying to slow down the clip and its soo long that its bumping into another clip. From what i believe, the speed will not allow you to go longer than you have in an area for a clip. Try making it a video track to perform this action on.

Slow Motion Problems With Twixtor Pro in AE CS5.5

Hello forum! I recorded some footage at 1080p and at 60 fps. My shutter speed was 1/1000 and the ISO was 3200. After importing my footage and applying twixtor pro to a solid and setting the color source to my footage, i get a lot of ghosting effects. Some other things i did with Twixtor: Changed speed % to 20, Cahnged Frame Interp to Motion Weighted Blend, Changed, Input Frame Rate to 29.97, and Finally Changed Warping to Inverse w/ smart blend. Maybe this will help. If you were going for a target slow mo of 1/2 speed and your playback was going to be at 30 fps then you'd shoot at 60 fps. If you had a film camera with a normal shutter shooting at 60 fps wold give you and exposure of about 1/100 of a second. That means that if you have a video camera that will shoot at 60 P, or even 60I that your shutter speed should not be any faster than 1/100 of a second. Slowing down 60P or 60i footage is easy, It only gets hard when you want to slow something down to 1/4 or even 1/8 normal speed.
Let's take 1/8 speed. IOW one second of real time takes eight seconds of playback time.
If your project was set to 24 fps that means your target filming frame rate would be 8 X 24 or 192 fps. That means your shutter speed would be somewhere close to 1/400 of a second or half the duration of the frame rate. So I guess I should have said frame rate times 2.
Setting the shutter to 1/1000 will give you an unnatural look to the slow mo because the edges will be too sharp. There are some occasions when you want that crystal sharp image in slow mo, but you have to be able to film the original scene at a high frame rate. Images with very sharp fast moving edges give Twixtor a very hard time. The edges end up creating weird ghosting that can’t be interpolated away. It’s just too much information for the motion vectors to successfully recreate. 1/8 speed is about my limit for Twixtor. If the camera was capable of 60i or 60p that that means doesn't mean I could slow down that original footage to 1/16 speed. It means that at 1/8 speed I'd have twice as much original information to work with and would therefore get a better result. It also means that I'd still want a shutter speed that was no faster than 1/400 of a second.
Did you follow that? First rule of slow mo: Film at as high a frame rate as you can with your camera. Second rule: Try and emulate the shutter speed of a film camera that is over-cranked. Third rule of slow mo: Don't try and slow down too much. The amount of slowdown you can successfully achieve depends entirely on the movement in the frame. Unfortunately, the faster the motion, the harder it is to slow it down using software interpolation.
I spent several months working with re:vision fx on deinterlacing and speed changes in interlaced footage. This advice comes from several hundred experiments on several types of footage and from 40+ years behind the viewfinder of film cameras. I hope this helps.

Premiere Pro cc 2014 slow motion problem

hey guys , i have an urgent problem ,
i was shooting a fashion film few days ago with 2 cameras 5d mk 3 and 6d , the 5d footage was at 1080p 23.967 ( for wide shots to be able to crop move etc. ) and the 6 D was at 60p ( for the slow mo stuff )
all footage was all I ( least compression )
now i was editing to a 720p sequence all was fine till i got to the 60p footage and it started to do ghosting and then i accelerated the footage a bit it got choppy here it is :

i am not over cranking the slow mo ,
here is my steps maybe i did wrong :
right click on the clip > Modify > interpret footage > select assume this frame rate 23.967 > press ok
then i picked a piece of the clip and dropped it to the timeline
i attached a screenshot of the sequence settings and the footage settings.

Please report the exact version of Premiere as displayed in the About box. "CC" is not specific enough given that there are now 9 releases under that banner. Nor is "the most recent update of CC" as that could apply to CC7.2.2 or CC2014.1.
If you're on 2014.1, then another customer with no video in the monitors resolved it by disabling GPU acceleration (set Renderer to Software Only on File>Project Settings>General.) No Video in Source or Program monitors with PremierePro 2014 update. And at least two customers have reported that clearing the prefs resolved performance issues on Mac.

Slow motion looking bad

I have tried to slow a video clip down to 30% speed. It looks smooth when played back in FCE, but when exported to a QT movie, it becomes jerky with brief stuttering of frames.
I have tried the techniques described in other posts but nothing seems to work. First, I tried it with just frame blending. Then I superimposed a copy of the clip, and used the de-interlace/flicker filters without frame blending.
The original footage was shot on Super-8 film, transferred to DVD, and converted to DV.
Any suggestions as to how to make the slowed clip play smooth after exporting would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried the Toltzman solution ? It works only for 50% slow down, but it seems to work better than the standard Speed command. Let me quote it from an old post:
"When you slow down a clip in FCP/FCE, the application does not use the 60 (or 50 in PAL) fields/second of interlaced video, which can help to achieve very smooth 50% speed video.
Here is a recipe for converting your 60/50 fields per second in to 60/50 frames per second for a nice, smooth slow motion effect at 50% speed.
Slow motion in FCE using both fields of Interlace video to get smoother slow motion at 50% (uses all 60 fields).
1) layer two copies of video in timeline over the top of each other.
2) apply a de-interlace (1) and blink (2) filter to the top copy and set the de-interlace to use the Upper field. Set the Blink filter to an on duration of 1 and an off duration of 1.
3) apply a de-interlace filter to the bottom copy and set it to Lower field.
4) Set the speed of each layer to 50% and turn OFF the frame blending.
The top layer and bottom layer should now be interleaved. The top layer will contain only the upper field (repeated across 2 frames) and the bottom layer will have the lower field (repeated across 2 frames). The Blink filter will switch back and forth between the layers to use all fields as frames.
If your field dominance is different than NTSC DV, then you'll have to reverse the de-interlace settings on each video layer

What is the suggested frame rate to record in for fast / slow motion processing from a clip recorded

I want to create a video however I only have 1 dslr camera and I want the ability to post process the clips I record to be either in slow motion or fast motion. I don't want to have to record something in 24fps then 60fps. is there an ideal frame rate for both. What are some of the best practices for this in regards to recording and post processing in Premiere Pro.

The ideal is to shoot in different frame rates, one for real time footage and one for fast or slow motion clips. This is called under and overcranking. It means you have to decide when shooting whether the clip will be real time or not.
Less than ideal is to shoot everything at one frame rate and then slow it down or speed it up later. It's less than ideal because the effect is never as perfect as the ideal method. Especially in PP, which does not do very well with slow motion to the point I recommend using After Effects instead. (At least with 24 fps media.)

Problem with slow motion reversed clips

I've imported clips into iMovie 11 and can apply slow motion through Clip Adjustments. When I try to do both Slow Motion and Reverse all I get is a still clip. I tried both copying an existing Slow Motion clip and tried to reverse it and tried applying Reverse and Slow Motion at the same time to a normal clip without success. I've tried it with and without Stabilization. Any ideas?

You are not alone! But I have not found a way to resolve the problem either! Could it be a fps problem?

For disk repairs use Disk Utility. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

Can Slow Motion Be Done in FCE?

I have a video file that was shot in 720p60 (1280*720p @ 60FPS). I was hopping to be able to slow down this clip to 50% of its actual speed and get that nice slow motion effect. I shot it in 60FPS so that I would not get the choppy look of 30FPS when you slow it down. However, from what I can tell, FCE does not do a very good job of handling 60FPS footage. So my questions is, did I overlook something, or am I going to have to fine an other program to do this with?

Would I not still get the same choppy quality you usually get when slowing 30FPS down to 50%. I was wanting the completely smooth slow motion like you see in professional productions. Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't you get the 50% slow motion effect just from playing a 60FPS file at 30FPS?
