Slow network browsing in Illustrator CS3

One of our customers use CS3 on Powerpc's.  They have many small files in many directories on a 2008 SBS.
The network connection is okay (copying 140 MB takes 3 seconds).  Browsing tre AFP shares from within the finder is also okay.  The first time this takes some time but for the rest of the day it goes fast.  Only after restarting it takes a while to open the first time.
The problem they are having is opening the share from within Illustrator.  Each time this takes a long time (10 to 30 seconds).  First the small watch appears and then the rotating circle.
Does anybody know if this inherent to Illustrator?
Thx,
Dushan

Hi Mike,
I've tried working in groups and
also using one big share containing thousands of directories.  Each directory contains apx 2 to 10 files of each less
then 150 KB.
I'm aware that on a Mac when openeing a share it also first checks the content of the subdirectories which takes time.  They can live with that because it's only in the morning when opening it for the first time.  After that it's okay in the finder but not in Illustrator.  There must be something different between looking for files in the finder and browsing for them in Illustrator.
I've also deleted the ds_store files and used the appropiate command to avoid them being created again.
The thing that bugs me is the fact that all was okay when they used 2003 SBS.  It was only when we installed 2008 sbs that it slowed down.  I even installed a extremeZ-ip on the server but still the same result with Illustrator.

  • Slow network browsing (at times)

Hi all: Ever since we installed our new servers (January-February) we have been experiencing slow network performance. We currently run OES11 SP2 servers and use Novell Client 2 SP3 for Windows 7 (IR9 and 10) on Windows 7 64-bit workstations. We also use ZCM 11 SP3 clients. All our workstations are members of the same domain (functional level 2008 R2).
Here is what I observe. Right after completing a successful login access to any OES server takes 2-3 seconds for the directory list to display. Once one server has been accessed we do not see the delay to other OES server. Browsing and access to the domain servers seems unaffected. But after a few minutes and symptoms return. I have tried various remedies detailed in a few TIDS and Cool solutions but none seem to help. I have elevated the Novell network providers to the top of the provider list. Wireshark captures don't show any smoking guns.
    Suggestions? Thanks, Chris.

The first thing that I recommend you do is turn off Autotuning.
From an elevated command prompt on the workstation: netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
The second thing that I recommend you do is turn off Remote Differential Compression.
From an elevated command prompt on the workstation: Netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
I would suggest that you try this just on one or two workstations first and see if the situation improves.
Please do let us know how it goes.
    Cheers,
I may be wrong here but I just want to clarify:
From an elevated command prompt on the workstation: Netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
I believe this Disables Receive side scaling, not Remote Differential Compression.
To disable Remote Differential Compression you can either remove it through the "Windows Components" in Add/Remove or Run:
    ocsetup MSRDC-Infrastructure /uninstall
Along with the above I run the following in a Run Once Bundle on all machines:
netsh.exe int ip set global taskoffload=disabled
netsh.exe interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled
netsh.exe interface tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh.exe int tcp set heuristics disabled

  • Intermittent slow network browsing

    Hi,
We are experiencing a weird issue with network browsing from Windows 7 x64 enterprise edition on a Server 2008 R2 share.
What happens is when a user browses a network share and selects a file, it takes +-20 seconds to select the file. If multiple files are selected it takes even longer before it responds. When it does respond, going up and down in the folder hirarchy goes
fast, but when selecting any files (not opening, just selecting) it takes very logn to respond.
While waiting for it to start responding I can open and close other programs on the PC, use Windows Explorer to browse the local hard drive all without issue. Something else that makes it weird is I browse the exact same folder and select files from another
device and I can select files without issue.
So at this point one starts to think the issue is with the local computer, but this happens with about 40 people (not everyone) but not always at the same time. And the issue is also not the local server, because it happens on two different server shares.
To be honest I'm not sure if this issue is client side, server side, network or whatever. Originally I thought network, but why does one person experience it, and the person right next to him does not have the issue? But 3 hours later a different person
    has the same issue.
My gut feel is it's not a network issue, because while this happned, I ran a continous ping to the user's computer, and it did not drop a single ping, and latency stayed below 1ms the whole time.
Any deas where to start? What I've done, apart from trying to figure out if the issue is on the server or on the client, is I've bypassed the DFS-N share and accessed the share via \servername\sharename and that gave the same issue.

    Hi Jacovzy,
According to your detailed description, it seems this client issue. However, we need to verify it.
Since you are in domain environment, please logon this Windows 7 Enterprise x64 edition computer with other domain user account to check if all user logon in this computer have the same issue.
If yes, it should be the client issue. We could perform a
clean boot to check if there is caused by some third-party software conflicts.

  • Slow network browsing to NetApp SAN (help)

    Hey folks,
I have two location seperated by a WAN link (1Gb).  I have a couple Mac's at the main location and a couple at the alternate location.  The Windows 7 and XP boxes at the alternate location exhibit NONE of the problems that we are having with the Mac's. It's frustrating.
No matter if I am on a Windows box or a Mac at the main location I never have a problem.  At the remote site I have problems with only the Mac's.  They take sometimes two minutes or more to show the contents of a network folder.  I can put a Windows 7 machine right beside the Mac and plug it into the same switch and it has zero problems.  What gives?
I've tried everything I know.  I've followed threads on here that recommend changing a few things in the SMB.conf file.  That didn't help as I did it as well.
The Mac's are running a combination of either 10.6.8 or 10.7.x.  Both Mac OS's have problems.
I'm the network admin and I have access to all of the network/server equipment including our Cisco switches and routers.  I cannot find the problem.  I originally
If I click on "Connect to Server" and then specify the SMB path with our without port 139 specified it will come up and prompt for credentials (on the first time only) and then open up the folder.  Then I drill down through a folder or two and get to a folder that has about 4200+ pictures in the folder.  Each pic is about 4 Mb in size.  That is when it will sometimes take 2-6 minutes to get anything to show up.
I've tried turning of generating the thumbnail preview in Finder and that didn't help either.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!
    David (MCSE, MCP+I, Linux+)

    Grant,
I work for an NFL team and they are game photos.  Believe me, we need them and we have software that can look through those photo's like it's no big deal.
Windows 7  and Windows XP have no problems loading the content of the folders.  Your answer didn't really give a solution.  And no, we are not going to go through those photos and categorize them more.  They are from one game.  Each game has that many photos.

  • Illustrator CS3: Very Slow Open, Very Slow Save

    Hello all,
I just recently have been issues with Illustrator CS3. Up until about a few weeks ago, it had been running flawlessly. Now, whenever I try to open up any EPS or AI, Illustrator will literally take at least a minute to open it. This happens with a complex 2mb AI files, but also for a tiny simple files consisting of a 1" square on a blank artboard. No matter the file size, it will take around a minute to open it up.
    Opening a 44kb .eps: 75 seconds
    Opening a 210kb .ai file: 67 seconds
    Saving a 76kb .eps: 56 seconds
Export to grayscale PNG: 66 seconds
Export AI Layers to SWF Files: 2 seconds
    This is ridiculous.
Saving is the same issue. It takes a ridiculously long time to save even a blank document.
It's not my machine (2x2.66ghz Intel Mac with 5gb ram, OSX 10.5.6). Photoshop feels a little sluggish too, but not to this extent. InDesign, Flash, Dreamweaver, Acrobat all run perfectly. I even uninstalled all the CS3 products and reinstalled to find the same issues. And now that I've been given a time sensitive job, I need to get this program running quickly again.
I'm not sure what I can do to solve the problem, aside from trying to reinstall OSX and start fresh. Any and all help is appreciated! Thank you!

Well, I reinstalled Mac OS X before even trying those methods. It was less of a hassle than I thought it would be. Solved the problems with Illustrator. Everything is running fantastic.
But, I was just working in Photoshop, opening about ~20-30 small PNG's at a time to resize, grayscale, etc. I opened up about 60 at once to make things go quicker. They all opened up, with a little bit of lag. Now, if I even try to open up 10-15 PNG's at a time, they load very slow, like the problem I was having before with Illustrator...
Is there anyway to reset some memory settings? Or clear some cache? I believe this is what caused my issues with Illustrator before (opening too many files at once.)

  • Illustrator cs3 very slow saving

I use illustrator cs3 and for some reason it has become ridiculously slow to save files. If I export to some other file illustrator is very fast, but saving takes 1 or 2 minutes. I have turned off version cue and pdf clipboard settings, but didn't help.  I'm working on XP machine.

It appears that many have viewed this question, but know one has a solution. I do have an update. I uninstalled CS3 completely from my "C" drive and defragmented all drives on my computer. I then reinstalled CS3 on my "D" drive. With a fresh start I then loaded both updates to illust cs3 which is now version 13.0.2. Extremely slow saving problem remains, however exporting to a .png works like a charm. Seems alot of people coming here for answer, but no luck. If I stumble on anything I'll return.

  • Slow Illustrator CS3

Hi. I just installed Illustrator CS3 (with other creative suite programs) on my mac (had been happily using Illustrator CS before) and have found that it is frustratingly slow when I do my work from drawing, moving items, colors, etc. even with the basic paths and objects. I have tried deleting unconnected printers and rebooting my computer but nothing seemed to work. Please help.

A few things that may speed up your Illustrator:
In preferences turn off "Font Preview" which will turn off the preview of fonts in the Type Menu (it does not effect how fonts preview in your working illustrator file).
In preferences under Display Performance move the slider to "faster updates"
Also in preferences AND System Preferences turn off Version Cue. If you are an independent designer or user working on your own (as compared to someone working in a studio with other users who all have access to the same files on a server) then you really don't need this.

  • Replaced 2008 DC, now remote systems are slow to browse network

I just replaced our DC that also served as one of several DNS servers.  All FSMO roles were transferred to the new DC before demoting.
After doing so, the majority of our remote sites (connected via site-to-site VPN), can no longer access the UNC path of the file server also located in each remote site, and if they can, it is extremely slow.  However, this isn't happening to every
remote site.  Affected sites are also unable to access UNC path via IP address, although nslookup/pings resolve normally.  The temporary workaround is to remove all affected systems from the domain.  As soon as those machines are removed from
the domain and rebooted, accessibility to these paths returns instantly.

What did you replace your 2008 DCs with?
    Are you using WINS?
Transferring FSMOs wouldn't have anything to do with this. FSMOs are operational role holders that perform tasks for the domain and forest, and do not have anything to do with speed or authentication. However, I've seen slowness occur due to authentication
issues, especially with older operating systems and apps.
I've also seen issues with the TCP Chimney that can cause slowness.
TCP Chimney and RSS Feature May Cause Slow File Transfers or Cause Connectivity Problems

And if you replaced the DCs with 2012 or newer, you will also want to inventory your applications to make sure that nothing is using NTLM v1 or LANMAN, which no longer be supported in Windows 2012 R2.  So if you have any older apps that are using the
older authentication methods, they may no longer work.

  • Brand new iMac: super slow web browsing

Brand new iMac is super slow while browsing the web.
We have cable internet, and the iMac is connected via ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme router. We have a Windows machine connected to the same router.
The Windows machine loads web pages extremely quickly, the iMac takes 20 seconds to a minute to load anything.
Clearly there is a settings problem on the iMac. No idea what.
    It isn't the router.
    It isn't the broadband connection.
    It isn't the DNS server.
    Please help!

I'm not sure if you understood my original post, however, I will re-iterate it here.
I have several machines connected to the same network.
    MacBook Pro
    Windows machine
    iMac.
Only the iMac exhibits any problems.
Clearly, the ISP is not the issue. The iMac is connected via Ethernet to the same router as the PC.
Clearly the Mac is the problem.
Changing DNS server has no effect.

  • Illustrator cs3 headache! Error loading plugins. ColorHarmony.aip DxfDwg.aip FHImprot.ap PNGFileFormat.aip TracingSuite.aip TrcingUI.aip

I have searched everywhere on both the net and the adobe website and there is no solution for this problem.  I have tried all suggestions, aside from reformatting my hard drive and loading everything from scratch. I have Adobe CS3 Master Collection which we paid quite a bit for and I find these errors and mistakes outrageous.  I have a Zune and I still hve to disable the launch using the Vista Task Manager in order to get PDF files to save using any progrm within the suite.
All of a sudden one day, I started getting the following error: Error loading plugins. ColorHarmony.aip DxfDwg.aip FHImprot.ap PNGFileFormat.aip TracingSuite.aip TrcingUI.aip
I have tried using the CS3 Script clean up tool, even at level 2. I have gone through and got rid of any vestiges of folders or files that have to do with Adobe CS3 Master Collection.  Nothing works.  The only thing that did work that I refuse to do is to make another User Account and use that account just for Illustrator so I have to switch users back and forth to send e-mails and such.
What is the fix for this?  Is Adobe paying attention?
Any words of wisdom?  I have read that even after paying the $39.95 for help from Adobe, they still dont have a solution.   Is t his a ploy to make some money off of fees during this economy?

Okay all, here is what I have tried; re-installed printer drivers, nothing, then:
I went to C:\Users\[your name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Illustrator CS3 Settings on Win Vista.
Found the following folders:  Brushes, Composite Fonts, Graphics Styles, Kinsoku, MojiKumi, New Document Profiles, Plug-ins, Swatches, Symbols, Workspaces.  All folders were empty except for the New Document Profiles which had the following: Basic CMYK, Basic RGB, Mobile and Devices,
Print, Video and Film and Web, as I said these are document files which I deleted before this re-installation and nothing. Same error as above.
The three files listed in the Illustrator CS3 Settings folders are: AI Color Settings, AIMenuFaceCache and IllustratorFnt.lst.  I deleted all three, IllustratorFnt.lst rebuilds immediately when I Open Illustrator CS3, however, the other two dont seems to rebuild until I receive the Microsoft Windows alert:  a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the rpgoram and notify you if a solution is available.  You'd think with the many times that this program has shut down automatically, someone would have a solution by  now!
There is no AdobeFnt.lst file as specified by Mylenium.
corrupt preference folder, the whole users preference folder: I do not see an AI.Preferences folder in this area neither, and when I reopen Illustrator there is still no Preferences folder.  Dont know how to get to the whole users preferences folder.  I have a done Search for Preferences*.* and I only get entries for ACT! 2008 CMR which we have installed here.
corrupt Illustrator Settings folder located somewhere in the Documents and Settings No, this does not seem to do anything, If I delete the entire contents under Illustrator CS3 Settings.
a corrupt or conflicting plug in from a thrid party which is what it sounds like.  Nothing in the plug-ins (Illustrator CS3 folder) and I haven't downloaded a third party.  I do see the plugins that this mentioned in this error: ColorHarmony.aip DxfDwg.aip FHImprot.ap PNGFileFormat.aip TracingSuite.aip TrcingUI.aip in the following C: Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS3\Plugsin\Extensions, but the system will NOT let me remove them.
a corrupt font(s) or font data base(s) or both.  Removed all possible fonts that the system would let me, and still nothing.
a corrupt color or monitor profile (this once happened to me)  Do not use Custom monitor nor color profies.
a conflicting haxie  running a PC
an update to something on your user account Hmmm all I have done are the recommended updates to Vista
conflicting software on the mac it is usually entourage or Quicken but they usually interfere with the keyboard shortcuts.  On a PC.
and on the pc world of course a virus that is affecting your user account because it has only found your password on that accounts and which you obtained via browser or e-mail.  Ran a full system virus scan and nothing.
The last and very unpopular amongst the pc world is a permissions problem in the pc world they always find a work around thuis issue rather than face the fact and why Adobe may have given up at this point.  Turned off the UAC account, but your right, when I tried to delete the mentioned plugins in the errror, it said i didnt have the permissions.
There can be other reasons. The reason Adobe could not find it is the problem on the pc is often denial that this is user induced it also a problem but to less a degree on the Mac.
Maintaining your system is important. I do regular scans and things.
For instance have you set your scratch to a hard drive hat has a lot of free space do you have scratch other than your start up disk? Have a huge hard disk and 4 gb of DDR3 ram.
How much RAM do you have these are less likely to be the problem since the new user account works.
If you want to get his running again try a few things and tell us what did not work and perhaps we can help with nrrowing it down.
PLEASE HELP YOU GUYS, THIS IS VERY BIZARRE, WHY WOULD ONE SEPARATE USER ACCOUNT WORK AND THE OTHER NOT.  THEY BOTH PULL OFF OF THE SAME PROGRAM FILE FOLDER RIGHT?

  • Can't open EPS files in Illustrator CS3 since installing CS6

I'm on Windows 7, and need to be able to open .eps files with Illustrator CS3. Since installing CS6 yesterday I'm no longer able to associate EPS files with Illustrator CS3. When I right click an eps and go to "open with", only Illustrator CS6 is listed. When I "choose default program", only Illustrator CS6 is listed. If I "browse" and manually select the Illustrator CS3 executable, it still defaults to CS6. Using the same process with .ai files works fine, there is no issue. However these .eps files are not behaving like .ai files. If anyone could suggest a solution to my problem I would be very grateful.
    EDIT:
Also, attempting to set the default program through the "set associations" control panel doesn't work, after selecting the Illustator CS3 executable it still shows up as CS6.

Some research solved my issue. Need to create a registry entry for Illustrator CS3 (v13) in the eps file extension section of the windows 7 registry.
    1. Navigate to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.eps\OpenWit hProgids
    2. Create a new "binary value" key called "Adobe.Illustrator.13" (leave the value blank).
That's it. CS3 is now a valid choice for eps files. Hope this helps anyone who has the same issue.

  • Illustrator CS3 will not open! Please help!!

I've been using illustrator CS3 all day (no problems since I installed upon purchase over a year ago) and this afternoon illustrator crashed. i tried to open it again and nothing. it brings me to the illustrator screen saying "initializing" and then nothing. the icon stops bouncing and my hard drive races like it's about to explode. i've done every fix that's out there (including the version cue update fix), ran Tech Tool Pro, repaired my permissions in the disc utility, made sure everything is up to date, cleared all caches and still nothing. i've deleted over 5 gigs of stuff from my hard drive to make more space for Illustrator and am now running with 30 gigs free. still nothing. illustrator starts up in the dock, the CS3 screen comes up, gets to "initializing" and then the icon stops bouncing in the dock and the hard drive races. i'm at my wits end. can anyone help?

Weird the EXACT same thing has just happened to me. Funny I did almost the exact same things you did before looking up in this forum. Have uninstalled and then Reinstalled. My Photoshop works but also discovered my Indesign doesn't work. I never installed the Version Cue thing because I had problems with that in CS2. Other things seem to be running really slow, I use a great spam program called spam sieve that has also been crashing. My Leopard boot disc won't read for some reason so am going to try to reinstall system files tomorrow once I can borrow a friends disc. Did you ever get it back working? what did you do.

  • Unable to print in Illustrator CS3

I am now encountering my recurring problem - trying to print one of my maps.  To give some background, this is for a boardgame and consists of almost solely Illustrator effects.  There is a small amount of material from Photoshop incorporated.  It consists of some 20 layers of various effects, and was generated in Illustrator CS 3 (13.0.2) under Mac OS X 10.6.8.
Over the years, I have generated a number of large maps, for various efforts.  These range in size from about 6-12 sq.ft.  All the maps are generated in Adobe Illustrator, ranging from Illustrator 10 to CS3.  The maps are generated on beefy hardware platform (MacPro, various iterations, lots of RAM), with no problems in generating the map artwork.
However, over the years, when it comes to trying to print of of these  maps, I am almost completely unable to print them.  I dont have access to a large format printer, so I try and print these using various small size printers, and tiling the pages.  However, this inevitablely fails.  I am unable to print on any printer, under any OS (Mac OS X or Win XP), with any hardware, with any settings I have tried.***
The current effort is an .AI file of about 100 MB is size. I have also saved this same file as a PDF (flattened layers from AI, ~100MB in size), and as a PDF without Illustrator editing capability (this reduces the file size to 12 MB).
I have tried using Illustrator or Acrobat to print these documents.  At best, I can sit there and watch the status bar creep to 100%, and then sit there for 15 minutes, at which point I give up.  At no time do any of the printers show any activity.
I have tried printing just one tile (page) of the map, and it does the same thing.
This is of course intensely frustrating to encounter this again.  I cannot figure out why this is happening.  Is there some sort of pre-press operations I need to do ?
    thanks,
    Tom
***  There is one exception.  I have a small Brother HL-2270DL printer attached to my home network.  Using Illustrator, I can print the entire tiled map in a matter of a few minutes.  I have no idea why this works. Acrobat still totally fails.  As satisfying as actually printing something out, I need a color print.

Mike, while I am currently struggling with this one file, this same issue has dogged me for many years, over several different files, with, as far as I can tell, nothing in common, other than I generated them (the problem lies between the keyboard and the chair ? : )  Each of these maps is heavy AI work, with gratuitous use of textures, patterns, swatches, brushes and feathering effects.  There is a little bit of PS Placed artwork, but not much.
I will see if leaving out the placed artwork makes things work better, but the amount of Placed artowrk is pretty small.
What really baffles me, is that in its most distilled format (PDF with no Illustrator editing), the file is only 12 MB.  I cant fathom how a 12 MB file can present a challenge to any computer made in thre last 5 years.
I havet not yet explored the Advanced printing options, and I dont know what most of that does (even after doing AI for 8 years or more, I am still a hack).
Is there a good book that explains the different printing options and strategies ?  I am flying somewhat blind when it comes to something other than simple printing.
One further data point:  I opened up the previously mentioned 12 MB PDF, using Photoshop.  I rasterized the document to the tune of 300 DPI, and then saved it as a Photoshop PDF.  My thought was that opening in PS destroys any vector information and saving back out as a PS PDF then puts it into a form I could print from work.  From work, I opened this file on a Windows machine with plenty of horsepower and resources.  I attempted to print to a beefy Xerox 7xxx series office printer.  I tiled the document an hit "print".  The progress bar stayed at 0% for 20 minutes.  During that time, the CPU load ranged from ~5-20%, and the free RAM stayed at about 1.7 GB.  I checked the printer during this time, and it registered a print job, but no progress was made.  I gave up after 20 minutes.
    thanks,
    Tom

  • InDesign CS3 Crashes When Placing Illustrator CS3 Art

    Hi all-
I've been having some problems over the past week with InDesign CS3. Specifically each and every time I try to place an Illustrator CS3 element, the dialog says it is importing the art. Then the trouble starts - InDesign grinds for about 10 seconds and then I get an error message stating that "InDesign.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close."
When I click on details, I see that the error signature is "AppName: InDesign.exe AppVer: 5.0.3.662 ModName: adobepdfl.dll ModVer 8.1.0.1146 Offset: 001a1fcd"
I've already done the obvious - trashed my prefs files, then deleted the CS3 Suite (Master Collection if that matters) and reinstalled - still have the exact same issue. I even zapped the dll after the reinstall, and then reinstalled again - no luck.
This ONLY happens with native Illustrator art - .pdf, .eps, .PSD, .jpgs, etc can be placed with no issues. Yeah, I can save everything as an .eps, but that will take a lot of time to convert every asset.
I'm on Windows XP, Service Pack 3, running on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 with 2 Gigs of physical memory. Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.00 GHz.

  • Illustrator CS3 crashes at launch (Mac OS 10.6.8)

    Hello everyone,
Can somebody please help me out from this.
I'm using Illustrator CS3 on Mac 10.6.8. As I remember, I had installed some new fonts which I doubt it may have caused the error. I tried removing the User>Library>Preferences>Illustrator Settings folder. Plus I validated all the fonts including the new fonts on FontBook. Still negative. So I can't figure out what's the actual cause and how to troubleshoot it.

    code,
Item 11) in 5) in the list below is about font cashes; item 1) is about moving fonts (Illy may reject fonts that go through validation). You may also try to move preferences/folders as described in 4). 6) may be needed.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media, see below. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

External media: It is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky (for a while), but the chances of file corruption and other unpleasantnesses are immensely greater when you use anything but the harddisk, and it is better to be safe than sorry.
In addition to the (far greater) risk of file corruption, some issues are mentioned here:
