Slow Network - effects only 1 of 2 users
I am having an issue on my IMAC.
I have two users defined, myself as the admin and my spouse as a general user. My IMAC is 5 years old and has been working great. I have been keeping the OS up to data. Now recently without any changes, my spouses web browsing with safari is very slow, like dial up speed. When I logon and web browse with safari it works just fine. I have tried reseting Safari a number of times without any success. Does anyone have any ideas?
Hi, this has worked for a few, in her Account...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

Any advice on where to start when troubleshhoting a slow network (users complaints)?
We currently have users from one of our branch office that complains around network performance issues (slow network). Troubleshooting issues like this one was not the focus of my CCENT studies (got certified 2 weeks ago) but I was assigned that ticket last Friday (first assignment). I was thinking to call one of the users and ask him to connect on another computer to see if he still encounters the same issue (that would tell me if it is related to his computer or not - probably layer 1, 2 issue), ask him to try another application (to help determine if it is a Layer 7 issue) and then if it is not related to neither one of these I was thinking to start looking at the switch interface to which the computer is connected to. I would like to know if someone could tell me if I am on the right path and what else I should verify/investigate? Are there root cause analysis tools that exist to help solve/troubleshoot such issues?
Thanks in advanced.Patrick Salmon wrote:We currently have users from one of our branch office that complains around network performance issues (slow network). This is a pretty wide open question, and could be caused by a myriad of things. I'm going to make a couple of assumptions (yeah, I know, make an ass out of you and umption) such as the branch office is linked to head office by soem kind of dedicated link, and uses that dedicated link for internet access via the head office instead of having a local internet link. You may not have this, but the process should be similar - just the weight of the diagnosis of different stages may be different.
First off, get the user to define "slow". Compare the expectations of the user to the actual infrastructure at the site - if he's expecting a 10 MB/s download rate from the internet (100 mb/s) and you've only got a T1 or E1 link (1.5 mb/s), then it doesn;t matter WHAT you do, he's going to complain it's "slow".
Then move to the basics. Have the PC's investigated. Are they connected at the rate you expect? 100 Mb/s? 1 gig? Full duplex? The most common problem I've seen of this type is incorrect duplex negotiation - PC thinks it's full fuplex, switch thinks it's half duplex, and the result is lots of dropped packets and retries, resulting in "slow" connections almost everywhere. There's also the possibility of speed auto negotiation failing - something capable of 1 gig negotiating 10 Mb/s makes a *big* difference, especially if it's internal infrastructure being accessed.
Do some PING tests - ping a known local host - the local default router, for example - and see what kind of RTT you get. Then ping a known "intra" company host - one which is within the company but not on the local branch office site. What kind of RTT's do you get there? Finally, test a known external site - www.google.com, or a public DNS like the one at 4.2.2.2 - what kind of PING RTT's do you get to them?
Then traceroute - do the same ting, and look for weird hops, or really slow responses - is the workstation getting hooked up on something, protocol-wise, which does a reverse lookup (SSH is a classic example) before accepting connections - and when the RDNS doesn't exist, it "pauses" for several seconds.
Then it gets complex - start looking into the routers involved, and check for dropped packets or errors in the log. Check with the link provider and ask them if they see any errors on the link.
Where you go from there depends really on what you find up to now. ISP, management to, erm, educate the user to the realities of life in remote locations, or maybe you've actually got some faulty hardware somewhere you need to fix. You never know, it does happen! :-)
Good luck.
Cheers. -
Very slow network throughput since 2-3 days ago
I've been having very slow network throughput since 2-3 days ago, with no apparent reason.
I see (from what I can tell) no relevant package updates during that period.
Connections are nfs v3 shares, over UTP cat5e gigabit ethernet.
I've been running this setup for many years now, without such issues.
But now, it's as if throughput is capped around 100Mbps.
Is there a way to see - if for some reason - a network adapter has locked to 100Mbps, instead of 1Gbps?
ifconfig does not say anything.
PS: netstat -i does not report any errors over the connection.
Last edited by wantilles (2011-04-12 15:25:52)experiencing the same issue with my wlan0 since update to kernel2.6.38 yesterday night.
Speed tests grant me a download speed of around 50kbps. Should be around some mbit though! How do I find out, why it's acting so slow?
edit: switched to win7 for the moment. Everything is speedy and normal around here. Something is seriously broken in my arch box!
Can this be related to xorg-server1.10.902 or kernel2.6.38? It would also explain the strange issues with pacman lately (like this https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=116429 or this https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=116696).
More people seem to experience the network issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=116738
Any insights?
edit#2: Just got back from win7. Upload speed in Arch is quite okay. Download speed is extremely fucked though. I wonder why? At least now I know why pacman has problems getting package upgrades, etc.
How do I fix a problem with the wlan0 connection? Haven't had any of those before with gnome and Networkmanager. I'm using the ath9k module.

80% of the times I log (being it by user switching or a clean boot) I get slow genie effect animations when minimizing. The animation doesn't look fluid... it looks like a slow frame by frame; and though the time from when I give the command and the complete animation ends is almost identical to the healthy performed animation (meaning it's more of an aesthetics issue rather than performance) it's still kind of annoying.
They only thing that seems to fix it is closing all windows and quitting the Finder (or force quitting if you haven't add the Quit option to the Finder with Tinker Tool or something like that). After that it works just fine... until I reboot or log off.
Any suggestions?
btw: I can't tell if the same happens on scale effect.Found the answer; sorry. (well... kinda)

I have a lion server set up to host storage for time machine backups. Is there a limit to how many different computers can back up to the single server to back up. I am only backing up the users folders . The backup drive is an external Drobo with 6 TB. Right now it seems to back up my users all day long. I set their time machine interval to every 5 hours but it still runs all day long and is very slow. Server is on a new Mac Server mini.
AFAIK, there is no user limit.. it is simply a question of the network load. AFP is a fairly clean protocol.. but TM is not.. it does a lot of testing of the backup.. infact your setting of 5hour gap could well make it worse.
I would sort out the clients that are doing 100GB backups to a different backup location.. no matter how fast your network.. 100GB takes time to backup.. and over wireless forever.. it will never end.
I guess some of these clients are on wireless?? I would separate the TM of wireless to those that are wired. No more than 4 or 5 wireless clients to a target device. Otherwise you are saturating your network with backup data. And use 5ghz.. so close by.. it is much faster than 2.4ghz and you will get much better transfer rates. -
Screen Sharing Stopped Working Due to Slow Network
I have been sharing the screen of a friend with an iMac. I have an MBP and both our computers have all updates. After I updated her iMac I now longer can share her screen. She can still share mine and I can share my screen with others and I can share other users screens. She is the only one whose screen I can't share.
This started after a number of updates were installed on her iMac. The Connection Doctor says her iMac does not have the capability to share because of slow network connection. I tested the connection and it does not appear to be slow. I have tried a cable yet because it is pretty far from the modem and I need to get a longer cable.
I changed all settings on both computers to the recommendations I read here. Quicktime 1.5 MBps, ichat 500 kb bandwidth, set security to specific and allow ichat. Still cannot share screen of iMac and "slow network" given as reason.Hi,
If the Quicktiem setting had to be changed iChat will need restarting to "See" that new Speed.
If that has been done you could try deleting com.apple.ichat.plist where this info is held.
WARNING this loses all the other settings made in the Preferences (Fonts, Colours, Balloon or text background colour, Saved Transcripts, Menu Bar Icon, Some iChat 4 specific things - Remember Open Chats Across launch, Name spotting.) and Saved Status Messages.

Slow network connection possibly causing a slave to crash.
We are using Berkeley DB XML 2.4.16 (Patch level 1) in combination with Berkeley DB 4.7.25 (Patch level 3). These are Java processes.
We have a 4 node replication group with a master and a slave in the US, a slave in the UK and a slave in HK. We are using the built in replication manager. The acknowledgement policy is set to none. The HK slave OS is Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon Update 8).
The slave in HK is on a fairly slow network connection to the master in the US.
The amount of traffic generated by the master can become fairly busy at times and this seemingly causes the HK slave to become fairly unstable. It would routinely crash (SIGSEGV) with the following back trace caught with gdb and a debug build of Berkeley DB XML/Berkeley DB. The location of the crash is very consistent. The UK slave also suffers this problem, but to a lesser degree (I suspect the faster network link to the UK to be a factor here).

We had been adjusting the rep_set_limit environment parameter to see if it would help. First to 5MB, then to 1MB with little or no improvement.
In an attempt to gather more information I had activated verbose replication logging on the HK slave which has had the side effect of fixing the problem.
Does this sound like something that could be addressed with the rep_set_request parameter?
I am no master on tuning these replication settings so some guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks,
NeilOK,
I was able to reproduce the crash once again with verbose replication logging at the master, I know the verbose logging at the slave would be better but as we discussed that in fact fixes the problem, probably due the additional logging is throttling the replication mechanics a little.

The HK site was a bit behind when I started the tests, I didn't have the slave instance up over the weekend, I don't now if this really effects the results as I believe the HK has a hard time keeping up when there is a large volume of replication traffic in the normal case, hence the resulting crash is the same…
Before the crash, the slave was synchronizing with the master and it was sending out what I would guess normal "nobuf" messages. This is quickly followed by a large amount of "nobuf resend" messages. This continues for a bit intermixed with " MASTER: wrote only 53 bytes to site XXX.XX.XX.XX:58010" (The number of bytes are random). In the end it starts logging the following several times along with the "nobuf resend" messages..
MASTER: msg to site XXX.XX.XX.XX:58010 to be queued
MASTER: block msg thread, await queue space
MASTER: will await drain
MASTER: drain returned 0 (0,0)
If you would like to take a look at the actual log, I will need a way to filter any sensitive information (which could prove to be difficult) or attempt to reproduce it with another pair rigged to be something generic and hope it exhibits the same behavior. -
I bought my iMac from someone. Everything was changed over to my name however when I try to update programs it only shows the old users apple ID and I can't update. How do I change this so I can update the applications and have everything fully under me?
The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You — not the previous owner — must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
1. You don't own another Mac.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the previous owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
2. You do own another Mac.
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
Once booted in Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
3. Other issues
If you see a lock screen when trying to boot from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. -
Hi. This is my first time posting. My Macbook Pro with Os X Mavericks has been running super slow since before I installed Mavericks so I'm pretty sure it's not the OS that has the problem. It runs slow even if only one app is open, especially if it's a browser, particulary google chrome. If mail is open...forget about it, down to a crawl. I don't know how to read Etrecheck, but was hoping someone who does can help me out. Would be super grateful. :-)
P.S. - Also, it sounds like something is loose inside my mac. How should I proceed?
Thanks in advance.

(Slow Network): iSight camera not working in iChat since Leopard upgrade
I have a different type of iChat video issue. My Power Mac G4, 867 MHz, 1 GB DRAM is a supported Mac for the Leopard upgrade. I've successfully installed OS 10.5.
Also my Power Mac meets the iChat Conferencing Requirements for 1-on-1 Video Chat per the OS 10.5 system requirements and the application note here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301050
My iSight camera is connected via Firewire to an Apple Cinema Display, which feeds back to the Power Mac G4.
1) When I boot from my 10.3.9 Carbon Copy Cloner backup my iSight works in iChat (at least locally to see myself) without any issue. Green light comes on and shows me locally on video and audio sound bars. Before the OS upgrade the iSight worked fine for live video conferences with iChat 2.1.3 under Mac OS 10.3.9
2) Running OS 10.5 when I go to iChat 4.0's preferences video pane the following message is waiting "This computer does not support video conferencing."
3) With Leopard iChat 4.0 the Connector Doctor under "capabilities" says "(Slow Network)" for 1-on-1 Video Chat and won't even show video locally or turn on the iSight's green light.Fixed!
My Power Mac Quicksilver G4, 867 MHz. problem with (Slow Network) in the iChat Connection Doctor, no video preview or video iChat since upgrading to OS 10.5 Leopard and iChat 4.0 has been solved with the following posted towards the end of the thread below. I can finally see my video preview with iChat 4.0 and have also video chatted successfully with one other user.

Slow Network Speed with MacPro
I just received 4 MacPro's with the dual quad processors. I have configured 3 for our workplace and have moved them into production. We are experiencing very slow network speeds, a test file on our server of 100mb takes 2 minutes 20 seconds to copy to the desktop. I have manually set the ethernet port to 100baseT with full duplo. The old machine is running the same OS 10.4.10, and only takes 12 seconds to copy the file. I should mention that we use DAVE to connect to our servers, both machines are running the same version of DAVE, and using a third machine I connected to both drops and the file copied in 12 sec, showing that the network is physically OK. The only difference between the two machines is that one is the intel version? Can anyone offer any thing to try?
Thanks

Sometimes a router needs firmware update to be compatible, or upgrade the cables to cat6e, or look for a new router or switch which helped my own setup. Just look for one that says that it is "Vista compatible" actually.

Mac Premiere Elements 11 crashes on launch (network account only)
I am trying to use Mac Premiere Elements 11 (OS X 10.8) and it crashes every time on launch, but only for a network account. When I launch using a local administrator user, it works fine. How can I make it work for the network account?
I have already tried ensuring Read/Write permissions on my entire Home folder, and have uninstalled/reinstalled multiple times.
If it matters, the Home folders are on an external disk. The network account is set to be an administrator on the computer (this particular Mac is the Open Directory server, so it's a network user directly on the directory server).
No other application (including Photoshop Elements 11) has any issues at all.
If it is helpful, I can post the (huge) stack trace of the crash. Thank you... --Erik Bailey>How can I make it work for the network account?
You can't... read below
No current version of Premiere works properly, if at all, over a network
-you may NOT "map" your My Documents folder to a network drive
-you MUST give all users administrator accounts to use Premiere
-you MAY also need to... http://forums.adobe.com/thread/969395

Slow down effect won't work...
I recently upgraded to iMovie HD and when I try to use the slow down effect it renders it but it stays the same clip. Any suggestions on what is causing this?
You're not alone.
Unfortunately that's the only thing I can say and do for you...
Numerous posts deals with this bug. We can state that it appears in those cases:
- Ilife'05
- MiniDV film importation
This effect was so funny and usefull in previous versions of ilife. -
Premiere Pro CS6 opening slow when connected to slow network.
I recently setup a user with his computer running behind a VPN router so that he could work from home. The VPN router is used to give him access to local resources.
A strange thing started to happen with Premiere where it would be very slow to open. Either it hangs on the splash screen for a few seconds to a few minutes or the splash screen loads normally but when the program opens, it is just white for a few minutes until it finally opens. If I try to click on the program Windows tells me that the program is not responding. Being that the premiere was working fine before putting the PC behind the VPN router, I feel like it had to be a network thing. I had the user momentarily unplug the Ethernet cable from the router and Premiere loaded up quick like it normally does. So when Premiere opens, it must be trying to access some local resources.
The problem is I cannot figure out what that is. I went through all of the preferences and nothing is set to use a network resource. Media cache is set to us a local SSD. What else could Premeire be trying to access to launch?Premiere communicates with Adobe as it opens. I'm assuming it is verifying that you have an active account/aren't pirating the software. On my computer the maximum bandwidth usage is 1Mbps (that's bit not byte), so unless your VPN is incredibly slow, this probably isn't the issue. Maybe there's some firewall interaction that is limiting Premiere's ability to talk to Adobe as it launches?
