Slow networking since Mavericks install

I've been experiencing intermittent networking slowness with my MacBook pro since I installed Mavericks (previously had Mountain Lion). Where before I never noticed any slowdowns, now many web pages (like google.com) stall for several seconds before loading, and LAN operations (file sharing to a Mac OS X 10.6 server machine, Windows 7 boxes, etc.) are all rather pokey. Speedtest.net shows 1-3 Mb/s it's internet test, another wifi connected computer (linux) tested immediately after gets 12+ Mb/s (My provider is comcast).
Nothing external has changed in my setup, and this started happening immediately after the Mavericks install.
I do have a thunderbolt -> ethernet adapter that I'll be testing at some point, but that requires running a new ethernet cable. Also, I don't know if it's relevant, but I also have Parallels 8 installed (Win7), and it's running most of the time (I'll be upgrading that shortly).
Has anyone else seen this?
Cheers,
Seth

Yeah, I'm using Apple hardware all around (aside from the keyboard).
Thanks for the tip about the logs. I found a leftover VPN service which I removed. (Cisco OpenConnect, installed with MacPorts). Unfortunately, removing it didn't help the wifi troubles, but I also don't need it anymore.
Other than that the interesting stuff is related to parallels. When I turn it on, it says:
10/27/13 3:58:23.156 PM Parallels[11646]: Starting Parallels networking...
10/27/13 3:58:23.209 PM Parallels[11653]: Parallels networking sucessfully started
10/27/13 3:58:23.245 PM prl_naptd[11675]: Starting Parallels Network Daemon 10/27/13 3:58:23.297 PM
Then when I turn it off, it says:
10/27/13 4:01:14.061 PM prl_naptd[11675]: Exiting Parallels Network Daemon
10/27/13 4:01:14.181 PM Parallels[11787]: Parallels Networking was stopped
10/27/13 4:01:14.188 PM Parallels[11790]: Unloading kernel extension prl_netbridge.kext
I would suspect parallels more, except that parallels is also there when connected via ethernet. It's possible that their kernel extension could be only affecting wifi, but that doesn't seem likely. I'll find out for sure when I upgrade later this week.

    Hi,
Please do not type in all caps, its considered shouting and we can hear you just fine.
I believe you are asking a question regarding Pages, I would recommend re-posting in the Pages forum. This forum is a general iMac forum, while someone may know I believe the Pages forum is a better bet.
    Good luck.

  • Apple Mail locks up since Maverick install

Has anyone else experienced Apple Mail failure since Maverick OS X?   It comes up and is deadly slow... often freezing.  I have had to download Thunderbird as an alternative until this problem is fixed.
If anyone knows a solution or workaround, would be most appreciated.

See if deleting the cache associated with Mail helps ..
Quit the Mail app if it's open.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.mail/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Try Mail.

  • Since Mavericks install, problem with gmail

Since I installed Mavericks, the only way I can get mail from google mail is to take the gmail inbox offline and then online again before any mail comes in from my gmail account.   Any ideas on what I can do to fix this?   I'm current on Maverick updates (including the Mail update).

  • System crash and reboot since Mavericks install

    Hi all
I have recently upgraded my OS to Mavericks, on my early-2008 Macbook Pro, and have experienced system crashes and reboots since then.
The crashes occur when using either of my web browsers, Safari and Chrome, and definitely seems to occur more frequently when using YouTube.  I haven't experienced a crash in any other applications.  I have tried updating Flash, then deleting and re-installing Flash when the upgrade was unsuccessful; not sure if this was relevant or related but I thought I'd give it a try anyway.
    System spec:
Processor  2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9 (13A603)
Currently using less than 50% of the 200GB drive.
Following one of the first crash and reboots, I copied a report to Notes for future reference.  Here is the report:

The user was also asked to find the latest panic report in Console.  I can't see any panic reports.  There are a number of .diag logs within System Diagnostic Reports, and one .crash log.

  • MacBook Pro painfully slow, lagging after Mavericks install

I know I'm not the only one with this problem, but I'm not often able to follow the advice given to others -- it's too technical for me and uses abbreviations I'm not familiar with.  I would so appreciate any suggestions anyone might have -- expressed so people with not much expertise can follow them.  Here's the report on my machine.  Thanks!!

MacKeeper is not capable of doing anything that can't be accomplished more safely and easily using the Mac's built-in tools.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it updated with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Warning error on gcc compilation since maverick install

Since I have installed Maverick on my mac, I have several issues to compile my C++ programs.
Following what I could read on some forum i installed xcode-select --install.
But now I have several Warning that I didn't have before. So I'm not sure my program is working correctly. Can someone help me.
Here is the Warning I got :
ML.c:743:3: warning: implicit declaration of function 'dgeev_' is invalid in C99 [-Wimplicit-function-declaration]

Thanks a lot for your support.
    BR,

You haven't declared those functions. Also, there is a path through your code where a function that should return a value, doesn't.

  • Extremely slow networking since 10.4.3

We have had 4 buildings upgrade to 10.4.3 and all 4 of those buildings are having network problems ever since the upgrade. All other buildings are OK and these effects happened right after making the update.
One program loads on the computers and has to pull its data from a building server. This now takes minutes instead of seconds.
Apple Remote Desktop will disconnect often. If you are observing over 15 computers, they will frequently drop connection with you. If you try to drag a window or an icon through ARD, it will drop the connection, reconnect, let you drag it a tiny bit further and then drop again. It doesn't matter if the the ARD admin is using Mac OS X 10.4.2 or 10.4.3, it's slow either way. Only the computers with 10.4.2 still work normal through ARD without dropping connections.
Internet has also been reported as really slow, but only on the 10.4.3 computers.
Pings to a 10.4.3 computer comes back with:
    64 bytes from xxxxx: icmp_seq=0 ttl=62 time=109.155 ms
    64 bytes from xxxxx: icmp_seq=1 ttl=62 time=94.683 ms
    64 bytes from xxxxx: icmp_seq=2 ttl=62 time=114.803 ms
    64 bytes from xxxxx: icmp_seq=3 ttl=62 time=145.994 ms
    64 bytes from xxxxx: icmp_seq=4 ttl=62 time=94.540 ms
But pinging a 10.4.2 computer at the same building comes back with:
    64 bytes from xxxxx: icmp_seq=0 ttl=62 time=1.284 ms
    64 bytes from xxxxx: icmp_seq=1 ttl=62 time=1.245 ms
    64 bytes from xxxxx: icmp_seq=2 ttl=62 time=17.950 ms
    64 bytes from xxxxx: icmp_seq=3 ttl=62 time=1.308 ms
    64 bytes from xxxxx: icmp_seq=4 ttl=62 time=1.403 ms
This happened right after the upgrade so there must be something related. Please help!

I'm seeing similar sorts of issues, not quite the same. only in that my pings are fine.
For example, any access to <hostname>.local is very slow, unless I specify a port. Case in point: a WebObjects app on a local server: <hostname>.local/<rest of URL> is agonizingly slow, whereas <hostname>.local:<portnum>/ responds immediately.
Also, a Panther machine connecting to that Xserve (Tiger server X.4.3) running the WOF app gets a regular speedy response using the normal URL.
SSH won't return at all unless I discover the IP address, which is a pain with NAT and DHCP unless I go reserving IPs all over my subnet.
I even see problems accessing my own machine: <localhost>.local is slow where regular localhost responds normally.

  • Macbook pro 2008 super slow after fresh mavericks install

I install fresh snow leopard and mavericks after that, before i do this, my mac worked super fast and everithyng was great with snow leopard, after I intall mavericks the computer just got super slow, in every situation, opening apps or surfing the web is  a pain in the... I hope apple fix this fast or I`ll be forced to go back to snow leopard again.
    I have a macbook pro late 2008
    core 2 duo 2.53hz
    4gb ram 1067 mhz ddr3
    512 nvidia geforce 9400m 256mb & dedicated geforce 9600m gt with 512mb
    HD: TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100

That is normal for a few hours. Spotlight is rebuilding its index of all connected drives. Disconnect any that are external and it will settle down soon. You can reconnect them when you go to sleep so that Spotlight can complete indexing.

  • Can't access Mac over network since Mavericks update

Help! Since the update to Mavericks I can't access my iMac over my home network using my Nexus 7 tablet. I used to do it flawlessly right before I updated from Mountain Lion.
I was using ES File Explorer to browse my shared folders on my Mac from my Android Tablet right away and now I keep getting asked for a username and password to connect. I type it correctly but still not able to connect. I tried other file browing apps for my tablet (File Manger, AndSMB,...) but still unable to connect. The apps can scan my network and find the server address (iMac) but can't get access to it.
I must say that the Tablet can access the internet so it's not Tablet network settings related.
I tried the workaround found here http://cammodude.blogspot.ca/.  Still not working. Any suggestions?

Try going back and checking the step 3 on the linked instructions for remote login where it mentions:
Step 3: Now enable “Remote Login” in the Sharing menu of System Preferences.
    Read more: http://www.shoutpedia.com/transfer-files-mac-os-x-mavericks-android-phone-wifi-e asy-way/#ixzz30iEam8MC
That's the part that will allow it.  I've got "Remote Login" checked there' and and then make sure you have whichever user(s)/groups added for the login you're using.  I have that set to Administrators and on then on my phone I have it set up with computer IP, port 22, my computer username which is a First Last type format with the space...whatever it normally says on your login screen on your computer or when you get prompted to allow software installs etc. and then the password.

  • Colors messed up since Maverick install

Since installing Mavericks yesterday my colours on my Macbook Pro are all messed up in that they are dark, way too warm and generally displeasing to the eye.  Previously my colours were right on, even when I print photos at a reputal lab.  Since I am working in photoshop editing portraits the colour is crucial.  How do I get it back to my previous display colours?

    Hi ambersin,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article explains how to calibrate your display's colors and may help:

  • Printing problem with HP LaserJet Printer since Mavericks Installed

    Hello,
I'm working on iMac and I have recently installed OSX Mavericks.
I have now printing troubles with my printer HP LaserJet P1102w.
Sometimes it prints, sometimes it doesn't.
When it doesn't print I often need to suppress the file in the printer task and then print again. And there it works.
I have tried to solve the problem by installing all the HP drivers, and also made a Reset printing system, but it does'nt change anything.
    Any Idea ?
    Thank you for any help.
    François

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Select
    /var/log ▹ cups ▹ error_log
from the hierarchical list on the left side of the Console window. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the time of the last failed printing attempt. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Apple Mail keeps crashing since Mavericks install

Can someone please advise - ever since I upgraded to Mavericks mail crashes. I open Mail (I have 2 apple mail accounts) and it loads my messages. As soon as I click on a message the app crashes. I've sent numerous reports and have to log in through Chrome or Safari which is really really annoying. Please help!!!

    Hi!
I fixed my mail app crash issue as below
    1) Go to ~/Library/Mail/ (By right click at finder and choose "Go to Folder..." then type "~/Library/Mail/"
    2) Back up ~/Library/Mail/V2 folder for your mailboxes.
    3) Relaunch Mail
    4) Sync all your e-mails again
    5) If your old mail (only in local) is needed, import your back up mailbox. (Mail->File->Import Mailboxes)
By the way, "defaults delete com.apple.mail ColorQuoterColorList" didn't work out for me.
    Have a nice day!!

  • 2010 mac mini - monitor goes dark every few sec's problems since Mavericks Install

My Wife updated her 2010 Mac mini from Mountain Lion to Mavericks and ever since, after start, up the display  intermittently flashes a dark screen, every few seconds.  (within 3-10 seconds or so, there will be another period of dark screen, that may last aprox. 1- 6 seconds.  The timing of this changes constantly.  The finder and all apps I have seen are affected in the same way. it seems to be an all-the-time problem
the monitor is an OptiQuest Q9, and the system connects via an Apple mini display to VGA adapter (supplied with the mac mini) , then a vga cord into the monitor, which has a native resolution of 1280 x 1024.
The only workaround we have found is to boot the mac with the monitor cable disconnected, then reconnect the monitor cable after boot up is complete. In that case, the monitor does not flash, until the mac is shutdown or restarted again.
    Steps I have already tried:
    Zapped P-Ram
Reset SMC (shutdown, waited with power unplugged, then reattached power and  rebootted
    Repaired disk permissions,
    repaired disk
    re-download and reinstalled mavericks fresh.
changed display prefs for resolution, detected displays, etc.
    Changed background picture.
I don't know where to go with this anymore, and it has already taken a lot of time.
Who's got a Fix?    And if there is no fix, how do I revert from Mavericks to Mountain Lion?   The mac mini came with Snow Leopoard.

    Problem Fixed!
I found another page that referred to resetting the PMU (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2183) , which controls things like wake and sleep:
"If the settings in the PMU become corrupted, it can result in operational anomalies such as your computer not turning on, not displaying video, or not waking from sleep, among other things. In these situations, you may need to reset your computer's PMU."
Anyway, it is pracitcally the same proceedure as resetting the SMC (SMC reset=  Shut down, disconnect power cord for 10 seconds, reconnect power cord, wait 5 more seconds, turn computer back on)
but it is slightly different:   (PMU REST = Shut computer down, disconnect power cord for 10+ seconds, reconnect power cord WHILE SIMULTANEOOUSLY PRESSING POWER BUTTON, let off power button for a few seconds, then press power button again to restart the mac mini.)
After this the display problem was fixed, but the fan ran at high speed, so I did one more SMC reset as described above. Now everything is in order.   This also fixed the issue of the mac mini not waking from sleep unless the power/sleep button on the mini was pressed (it wasn't responding to the keyboard to awaken). Now it's all good.
    Hope this helps somebody else...
