Slow New Mac

I just sprung for the new 2Ghz Duo Core MacBook and named it Flash because I expected it to be super fast. I had previously had a 1.3 Ghz single processor PowerBook that lasted me many good years but I thought was worth giving up to use Aperture and FinalCut fast with the x2 processors. Yeah for speed!
Sadly, Flash is not living up to his name. In fact, my new MacBook is running so slow I'm thinking I screwed up by getting a new one. One possibility: I had a gig of RAM in my old laptop and have only 1/2 that in this puppy. But basic tasks and applications take SO much time to process (e.g. volume adjustment, opening applications) that I doubt its the RAM and am worried I have a bigger hardware problem. Scanned for spyware, viruses etc / came up 0% and never had any network issues before.
My Q: is this a typical hardware of OS problem that people have been having with the new MacBooks?
Thanks for the help!
MacBook 2Ghz Processor   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hello,
I went through the exact situation with my mac mini. The problem however is the ram. I have no idea why apple makes MacBooks or minis with 512 ram because that is completely insufficient for non UB Programs. Basically this is the breakdown of what happens:
Why is my computer so slow when opening programs ?
Your processor is super quick, your ram is actually quite quick, your hard drive is quick, your video card is o..k but not horrible. However, your 512 MBs of ram is completely insufficient so your computer slows down completely due to it. Think of it like a weak link in the chain, with one weak link your whole computer breaks down easier.
Why is 512 so insufficient?
Well what happens is your 512 MB of ram is actually more of 430 because 80 MBs gets used up by the integrated graphics card. Ok so 430 is still decent right? Wrong. When running anything not universal binary (MS Office, Most Adobe Programs and tons of other stuff) your computer need about 512 Ram to properly run/open those programs in a snappy fashion. However you don't have 512 MB of ram because your video card and Rosetta take at least half that. This doesn't work well. Because of Rosetta your computer demands a lot when running stuff thats not Universal, unless you have at least 1 Gig of ram. I'm sure when your opening Safari and iTunes and iPhoto you don't experience a slow speed. This is because 512 MB of ram is fine for most Universal Programs, but when Rosetta needs to rewrite PPC written stuff in a matter of seconds, you will quickly find a slow down. This is especially true when opening programs. While opening programs, Rosetta does most of it's rewriting to prevent major slowdowns while using the apps. Because of this, programs can take up to 15 Seconds + just to open. (Unbearable for a new computer)
You've mentioned Rosetta A Lot and Universal Binary And PPC what is this? (Sorry if I'm being condescending just trying to help)
PPC: PPC is the code used to write all programs in the G3-G5 series and previous old school processors. This code is made for macs specifically.
Universal Binary (UB): Universal Binary is the code used to be recognized by Intel Processors. Most programs now a days are written in this code since apples switch to Intel. The programs are all eventually going to switch (Unless they're really old or uncommon).
Rosetta: Rosetta is a background task which rewrite PCC codes into UB, all in a manner of microseconds. However, this process is usually mostly done when launching programs. It also takes up lots of ram. For games this isn't done completely at launch up becasue there is so much code to be written so you'll find most non UB games unplayable on the Macbook. This results in huge waits for programs to open which aren't UB unless you have sufficient ram which supports the process to go much quicker. Even with sufficient ram though, Non UB programs (Especially graphicly intensive programs like games and photoshop etc.), they will be slower in Rossetta then they should be (Maybe even slower then your old Computer). This however is temporary because, like i said upcomming relaseses and patches will be in UB.
Suggestions:
My suggestion is if you can, return your macbook and buy more ram (Not that huge of a price increase for something so essential). If you can't return it, spend the extra cash when you can and get more ram. If you do that, you'll find your computer running much much faster and you shouldn't experience a slowdown when running multiple applications as well. If you plan on using Photoshop and other programs simultaneously you may want to even consider 2GBs of ram (if your budget permits it) but thats not necessary unless your a major multitaskers. In fact, 2 GBs of ram would be a waste if you don't multi task a lot because it won't do much for gaming or video intensive tasks because then your weak link would be the Integrated Graphics not the ram.
If however, you completely can't afford more ram, just be patient. Eventually everything will be written in Universal Binary. This will make your computer much faster as time goes on (Usually the opposite). Software hasn't caught up to hardware yet, so if you can't afford more ram, just wait for the speedup.
I know it's kind of a complex subject and I'm not good at explaining. My laziness also results in a lack of proper English which I'm guessing also doesn't help. But i hope you have a understanding of why Flash isn't so Flashy.
Good to luck to both you,

  • Very Slow New Mac Pro

I just got my first Mac Pro. I upgraded to Yosemite. It took nearly 5 hours to download. I thought it would have been and internet problem. But then I noticed that almost everything is slow, I am cutting the cord with PC but I expect a difference!
Opening an app takes several seconds. I have seen my friends Macs and they have almost instant opening of apps and all. It seems awfully slow to me.
Also I noticed that RAM is constantly on 3.98 or so, and many times there is only a few MB available. Who is using all the mem?
    Thanks for any advice.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Adobe Creative Cloud - has anybody had any luck running Adobe CC on a new mac mini? Does it run slow for Photoshop?

Adobe Creative Cloud - has anybody had any luck running Adobe CC on a new mac mini? Does it run slow for Photoshop?

Adobe CC applications are very large and the base Mac mini isn't a good choice because it has only 4GB of RAM and has a slow standard hard drive. To get the most out of ACC you should upgrade the mini to at least 8GB. I'd also choose an SSD or Fusion drive for better performance.

  • New mac mini slow?

Hi, is it normal that the new mac mini (i5 gheepst model, uphradet to 8 gb ram) is slower than my macbook pro 13, 2010 modell (2.4ghz core 2 duo)? When i try to open programs from dock it is very slow on the mini.. My mbp runs snow leopard, and the mini lion.. Is this normal?

Cheesypoop, I have exactly the same problem. I was using an old Mac Book black version and my girlfriend is using the newest MacBook Pro with Leopard. I have the feeling that both of them perform better than my new Mac Mini, same model and memory than you. The only difference with my other laptops is the OS, so maybe that's the problem. Lion is very nice but doesn't perform as well as it should.
Last night I was feeling frustrated when I was using the iPhoto's sliding option. I noticed the slide wasn't as smooth as it is in the laptops. Also I tried to play a HD movie while I was unzipping a file. Almost impossible with the spinning ball every little moment showing up!
(and by the way... anyone else has problems with a loooong delay after pressing right click over one of the icons at the dock?) It tooks up to ten seconds to show the pop up window! It only happens the first time I do it. After that it works as it should, almost inmediatly.

  • Adobe Bridge CC very slow on New Mac Pro

Im running both Bridge CC (6.1.0.115) and CS6 on my New Mac Pro
the Bridge CC is obviously slower than Bridge CS6.
CC also very easy to get the spinning ball every click on Bridge CC, very annoying.
Also Im using Dell 4K monitor, If I load monitor size preview will be really slow, even on the New Mac Pro. is there any way We can set a specific size of the preview? which can speedup the preview loading

If you go to the menu File > Project Settings > General and set the Renderer to Software Only, any change?

  • Why is my new Mac running so slow?

I have just purchased a new Mac desktop...and am loving it so far. However, after some photos were added to it off and external hard drive, it seems to be SO slow.
Aslo, I cannot open any PDF files anymore...I've installed Adobe Reader, but what comes up from the download is garbled.
If you can help, I'd be so grateful...I'm really new to Mac.
    Thank you,

    Hello & welcome Ally!
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    Any change?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

  • The internet very very slow and drop in my brand new Mac pro OS X 10.8.3 any help!

I bought new Mac pro with Retina display (OS X 10.8.3) , I am suing Wifi and  the Internet very slow and drop most of the  time compare to my other Mac  OS X10.7.4! any advice. Thank you

If multiple people are seeing the same problems after making the same changes it is hard to believe that each problem is fundamentally different. To say that a change is specific to a single configuration implies that every computer and every operating system installation are different. This is not rational. Treating each problem individually fixes one problem. Finding the root cause fixes all the problems. I am familiar with finding root cause of communication systems - in particular mission critical spacecraft command and telemetry links. That experience teaches me to break the problem into pieces. My troubleshooting indicates a very high packet loss between my computer and my wireless router. In the exact same configuration with with two other devices i see negligible packet losses. i can go outside my home network and see the same ping and traceroute evidence in comparing the devices. That rules out my ISP, my email provider and pretty much isolates the problem to the router Mac link. Is this thinking flawed? Can you suggest additional tests I can run to further isolate the dropped packet problem? Further, no hardware has changed in my configuration. The only change is the upgrade to 10.8.3.
In posting to other threads I am trying to find if there is evidence of the same problem and to determine if there is any other way to gather evidence, and perhaps suggest ideas that folks might double check their fixes. In doing so you aggregate the problem and not decimate it. The problem in this thread may not be solved if a packet loss is still present. I am seeing packet losses as high as 60%; an iPad at the same location is seeing less than 0.1%. The network connection will work with high packet losses. You know that is what TCP/IP does but why accept 20%, 10% or 5% packet loss if you know it should be much less than 1%. The problem can only be determined if it is tested.
I have created my own thread - I linked to it.
If you prefer to not allow comments on closed threads I would suggest closing the threads to editing. In the future I will link from my thread to the solved one however if my thread finds a better solution there will be no way of pointing from the closed thread to a better solution.
My apologies for attempting to perform a methodical root cause analysis.
    Mike

  • FIOS is Super Slow on New Mac

    Hi,
I'm a new Mac user, just switched to the new iMac G5 from a Win XP machine. Love the new Mac except my Internet connection is very slow. Here's the configuration:
FIOS is connected to a D-Link router (D-624 AirPlus Xstreme G Wireless Router).
A windows XP machine is attached by cable to the route (located on the first floor)
My Mac (located on the second floor) accesses the network via the internal AirPort card.
When we were a dual XP house, my PC accessed the wireless network via a belkin USB card and I had basically the same speed as the XP machine downstairs attached to the router.
With the Mac, AirPort recognizes the network, but the speed is slow. Any ideas on how to recapture the speed on the iMac and keep the D-Link router?
Would adding Airport Express to the Mac or attach it to the router help?
Or should I yank out the D-Link and replace it with an AirPort Extreme? If so, would the exisitng XP machine work with the AirPort router?
I think that's it. Thanks for your help.

Philip64, Welcome to the discussion area!
How is the signal strength at the iMac?
Have you tried connecting the iMac to the router via Ethernet to see if you get the speed that you expect? If so, would the exisitng XP machine work with the AirPort router?Yes the AirPort uses industry standard Ethernet and 802.11b/g to communicate.

  • Premiere elements 13 very slow in new mac book pro

    Good Morning
I've just bought and installed premiere elements 13 in my new mac book pro (yosemite 10.10.2) 16gb RAM.
The program is going very slow and the user experience is terrific
I have also big problem with three -way color corrector: when apply this effect never change in image.
    Any suggestion?

  • RAM PREVIEW VERY SLOW (FAR FROM REAL TIME) ON NEW MAC PRO

    Good afternoon
I have the new mac pro with 8 cores, 64 Gb of Ram and dual AMD 700 graphic card, but the preview on After effects is slower than in the old mac pro (from 2010). I have set the preferences as told in your website and everything stills the same. Could you please advice? is very frustrating to see that a new machine works worse than the older one.
    thanks

Attached below you can see some screenshots from the settings I have on AE CC

  • Premiere Pro CC running slow on my new Mac Pro

I just upgraded my system to the new Mac Pro(Darth Vader Helmet) and its running slower then my 5 year old tower!? Ill take 15-20 seconds to save a project(small project). The playback is still a bit jerky. Overall it just seems to be lagging a bit.
    Here are my comp specs:
    OS 10.9.2
    3GHZ 8-Core Intel eon 5
    64 GB 1867 MHz DDR2
Does anyone have any idea why Premiere isnt blazing!?

Thanks, Jason, that's what I was wondering about.  Generally, people post to forums when they have problems.
Yep.  That's usually what happens.  My review will be centered around my usual "benchmark" of editing 2 AVCHD inputs, one PiP'd into the other, synced with an external audio source, and then exported to an h.264 MP4.  CC on my current Mac Pro (modified dual 3.46Ghz Xeon, 48G, nVidia GTX570) takes that task about 1/2t, if t = length of video.  Which is pretty damned good.  I'm hoping the dual GPUs will help scale that export task down a bit more.  I don't expect it to hit 1/4t, but.. hey, maybe I'll be surprised?
I make about 60% of my living from Pr, and the rest from Ae and other apps (mostly Adobe).
Given the lack of CUDA, at the moment, I don't expect the new Mac Pro to be a stellar performer with Ae specifically.  I assume that Adobe is working on OpenCL'ing Ae as much as they possibly can.  But from what I understand, it ain't there yet.
(I'd need a TB monitor and PCI extender, too).
I can understand the need for the PCI extender, but why the TB monitor?  I'd in no way even remotely consider one of those, just given how ridiculously priced they are.  There's no need for one.  Does your display have a DP input?  You're all set.  No?  It has HDMI instead?  Still all set.  It's dual-linked DVI that becomes problematic.

  • New Mac Pro 6.1 slow for some tasks, any ideas?

May new Mac Pro 6.1 (6 core, 64 GB RAM, D700's) is running very slow for 2 specific tasks.
    OS X 10.9.3  PS CC 14.2.1
Open Canon 5D3 Camera Raw files takes 30 seconds.
Smart Sharpen 5D3 file takes 75 seconds.
That is WAY slower than my 6 year old Mac Pro 3.1!
Everything else runs quickly and efficiently on the 6.1, but it almost freezes during these 2 tasks.  Not good!  As a photographer who processes hundreds of 5D3 RAW files at a time this is a big problem for me.
    I found this article explaing issues with the graphics;
    http://macperformanceguide.com/blog/2014/20140308_1-Photoshop-sharpening-speed.html
However my performance is way worse than reported here.
I hope to find a solution...

    Thanks for your input Noel.
I have unchecked Use Graphics Processor and the time for opening a RAW file remains around 30 seconds and to smart sharpen is now 100 seconds (up from 75).
In the activity monitor, I get between 500 and 600% use of the processors when opening RAW and 800% during sharpening.
A few seconds after clicking open in ACR, I get a dialogue box with the blue bar almost complete for a fraction of a second, then it disappears and another box appears (half the hight of the first one) and starts with only a small part completed, then takes it 30 seconds to finish.  It's like it tried to open in a normal way and failed, then another very slow backup process took over.
In the top righ corner of the Smart Sharpen dialogue box, I tried selecting "Use Legacy", then it sharpens in about 3 seconds!
Also of note, when opening a RAW file or smart sharpening, the computer becomes very slow and unresponsive, even to get mail or surf the internet.  Even streaming radio in iTunes cuts in and out or cuts out completely.  As if the entire system is overwhelmed.  Despite having 2 or 3 cores unused and at least 40 GB of unused RAM.
Not what I was expecting from a very expensive upgrade in the hopes of cutting down the amount of computer time per image file!

  • Premiere Pro CC continuous crash and extremely slow renders on a new Mac Pro.

    Hello,
recently we changed our editing machines with the new Mac Pro with this configuration:
    - CPU 3,5 GHz 6 core Intel Xeon E5
    - 32 GB RAM
    - 2x AMD FirePro D700 6 GB
we work on a server connected to the Mac Pro in Dual Ethernet configuration.
The rendering of a sequence at 1920x1080 with 3 video tracks (video footage converted at ProRes 422 LT, a title on a linked After Effects Comp and a PSD graphic overlay of a small logo) of the length of about 3 minutes it takes about 4 hour... when it doesn't crash.
When it crash, usually when i simply scroll the timeline, i receive an error message very long (if you want I can send you a rtf file about it, it's too long to paste it here).
    These are my system information:
    - Premiere Pro CC 8.2.0 (65)
    - I've installed every updates available at this time
    - OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
Thank you very much in advance, and sorry for my bad english.

Thanks Andrea for your assistance in reporting that additional information. You have come across an intermittent bug which has been reported by other users with no reliable repro steps for us to follow in house. So it appears to be mainly system specific, but we're not even sure which sorts of systems demonstrate it yet.
One other thing to try is clearing your media cache files (from preferences > media panel). In the meantime,e the best thing to do is make sure you submit those crash logs to adobe whenever you get them. This helps us identify common thread among various users who may be experiencing the same problem. Also, if you have time, please file a bug report describing the steps that caused the issue in your case: http://adobe.ly/ReportBug
Please be as specific as possible when describing your steps. Without a repeatable case, a bug like this is very, very difficult to fix. Thanks again for your support.
To work around the sloe render for AE comp problem, please try right clicking on the comp in the timeline and then choose the "Render and Replace" command to transcode it out to a more easily handled format. This should help a lot with your performance slowness, and you will still have the ability to restore the original comp files if needed.

  • PP CC 2014 Gets Extremely slow the larger my project gets on a new Mac Pro

My editing team and I have 3 of the new mac pro 3.7 GHZ Quad Core with 12 GB Ram, OSX10.9.3. We edit a TV show and the longer the timeline gets the slower PP gets. The problem is gradual, but by the time I get a timeline that is over 10 minutes long PP becomes very slow and unresponsive. Once my show reaches the 30 minute mark it's extremely slow. The main problem is with playback. I hit play and it takes anywhere from 10 to 20 seconds or more to even start playing. I'm editing footage from a Sony FS 700 and a Sony PXW-Z100, 1080i footage with no effects. Color correction and audio mixing is painfully slow once my timeline is complete. We converted from FCP7 and never had this problem with that program on the same computers. This problem is the same on all 3 computers so this can't be an isolated issue with just one computer.

Sorry about that. You say you work in a team environment. Are you with CC for Teams or do each of you have individual licenses?
Do you work with networked drives? How does the project work if media is on local drives?
Do you have a deep organization system where the media is in a folder inside a folder, inside a folder, etc.? What happens if you simplify naming conventions and folder organization?
Do you use long names for your clips and sequences? What happens if you try shorter clips names and sequences.
Do you store the preview files and media cache database locally and on a fast drive? If not, move these files to a local drive.
Does the audio sample rate match sequence settings precisely? Mismatched settings can cause performance issues.
Do you use the Warp Stabilizer effect liberally? The project can bloat if too many Warp Stabilizer effects are added.
Is the project file migrated from an earlier version of Premiere Pro? Never update a project file to a new version of Premiere Pro. Remain on the current version until that project is complete.
If so, any or all of these items could be the root cause(s) of the problem for poor performance. Do some tests and post back about your findings.
    Thanks,
    Kevin
