Slow on Mac mini

I bought this new Mac Mini about a 1 week ago.  Running Lion and have 4 megs of ram I have the 2.5 gzherz processor .
I ran Safari on my Win 7 machine and ran pretty good.  Ever since I went over to the Mac Mini .. Safari is very, very, slow
and most of the time I give up and go to Google Chrome.  Software is up to date.  I am on Time Warner Road runner service .
All of my applications are shut down ..
Does anyone

Emptied the Safari cache lately?
Turn off Extensions in Safari / Preferences if you have any installed.
Check for third party plugins >  Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Speed Download / Peer Guardian / Little Snitch ...  any one or more can cause problems with Safari.
Could be the preferences are corrupted ..
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash.
~ (Tilde) character represents your Home folder.
For LIon:   To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library
Check for Login Items
Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab. Delete any files or apps you have listed there. And go to /Library/Startup Items. Move any files in the Startup Items folder to the Trash.
Try Safari in another user account. Same problems there, then log back into your admin account, launch Disk Utility.  /Applications/Utilities
Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions). If the startup disk needs repairing, follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks

  • Very slow running Mac Mini

    Hi,
I'd like to thank all people supporting us (users) in these discussions, and especially the person who helped me restoring my MBP's performance,
I'm requesting once again some help for my Mac Mini which is very very slow.
Mac Mini running OS X Moutain Lion + Apple's Server add-on (a few services are running : file sharing mainly).
    Thanks in advance,

Hello Hedi, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • ACR 7.1 - very slow on Mac mini

    Hi
I'm running the trial version of CS6 on a new Mac mini.
I like the features in ACR 7.1 but I'm finding it very slow.
Dragging the Temperature slider takes about 5 seconds before the image updates. Is this normal?
This is with just one Nikon D700 Nef open in ACR, and no other apps running. I've already worked the file up, making adjustments to lens correction, sharpening, noise reduction, and using a couple of adjustment brushes.
If I progressively switch these settings off, the Temperature slider gradually goes back to being reasonably responsive. But I'd like to be able to fine tune the colour after doing these other adjustments.
Any way I can speed it up?
    Thanks!
    Mac mini 2.7 i7, AMD 6630, 16Gb RAM, 7200rpm 750Gb HD.
    Eizo CG275W
    Photoshop CS6
    ACR 7.1.0.354
    Mountain Lion 10.8.1

My dedicated CS6/ACR 7.x system is substantially more underpowered than your Mac Mini, yet I see no such lag in ACR.  Dragging the Temperature adjustment slider is practically real-time, with the preview refreshing in a fraction of a second that I can barely see and have no way of measuring.
I'm now running ACR 7.2RC1, but I don't remember seeing a lag in ACR 7.1 either.
My main working machine is a Power Mac (PPC) G5 Quad with 16 GB of RAM, on which 11.0.2 is the last version of Photoshop to run, so I have the Mac-Intel system described below just to run ACR 7.x under Photoshop 13.0.1.  I convert my raw files in ACR7.x open them in Ps 13.0.x and save them via Ethernet to an external HD connected to the G5 Quad for further processing in CS4. The Mac-Intel is used for no other purpose and the only other application I occasionally run on said Mac-Intel is TextEdit.
2007, 2GHz MacBook 2,1, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB of RAM (can use 3 GB), 160 GB internal boot disk, dedicated FireWire400 external HD for Ps scratch disk, external Time Machine HD.  Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I literally rescued this MacBook from the trash, where it had landed when my wife was told by local Apple Macgenius staff that it was beyond repair, when in reality all that was wrong with it was a bulging battery exerting upward pressure on the track pad and keyboard.  That was easy to replace for $20 or so through Amazon.com.
So, from where I sit,  either you have a machine-specific problem somewhere, or the culprit in your issue is Mountain Poop.

  • Slow internet: Mac Mini - Airport Express - 2Wire modem

I have SBC DSL, which came with a 2Wire wireless modem/router. I then bought an Airport Express and nicely networked a printer and two Windows XP Machine. The trouble started when I bought (ironically) a Mac Mini with a wireless (Airport Extreme?) ethernet card. The Mac has much slower download speeds! We're talking 150 kbps on the Mac, versus ~1 Mbps on the Win XP box.
I'm guessing there is a magic setting on the DSL modem which will help. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Morgan Brown

This problem lies with the Mac mini - there aren't any settings on the DSL modem that will fix this problem. I would start by having an Apple service center confirm the wireless interface in this Mac mini is performing properly (since it is still covered by the warranty).

  • Slow booting mac mini..

Hi. I have a mac mini (early 2009, 2ghz, 4gb ddr3 memory). For some reason it seems to boot slower than my girlfriends mac mini (late 2006, 1.6ghz 2gb ddr2memory). Both are running 10.6.7 fully updated, connecting to the same network with only a keyboard and mouse attached. Hers even runs a little faster until you start to load it up with programs. Anybody know why? Or what could be wrong with mine?

The most obvious things that load at login, which is part of startup if you have auto login enabled, are located at Apple menu-->System Preferences-->Accounts-->Login Items.  Unless you are certain that something listed here is not necessary, leave it alone.
To get an idea of which processes are running on your mini that are not running on your girlfriend's, launch /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor on each system.  From the Show menu, choose All Processes, then click in the User column to sort by user.  Any process that is owned by root was launched during the startup process.  You can compare the processes owned by root on each system to determine what is different.  That might help you get a handle on what is different with your mini.  Just because you find a process that isn't on your girlfriend's system does not mean that it is unnecessary.  It just means your system is running it and her's is not.  If you give us the process names, it may help determine it's usefulness.

  • Slow 2015 mac mini

    Hi all,
Got a mac mini that I've had about 3 months. I was brought to replace the 2007 imac I had.
I installed the mini by restoring the old time machine back up.
I don't use it for much power hungry stuff (web, email, excel etc) but not all at the same time.
It just feels slow and I fell like I see the rainbow circle thing all the time.
I am just wondering if I've installed some crap from the old imac that I don't need.
    I attach the etre report.
Thanks in advance for any help.

You have traces of MacKeeper on your system. Remove those.
You only have 4GB of RAM, and that is clearly not enough for you, as you only had 69MB of free RAM at the time of the report. Upgrade to at least 8GB. Visit http://macsales.com or http://crucial.com. They are not the only two RAM vendors, but are the ones most commonly recommended here.

  • Why is Excel so slow on Mac Mini?

At home I have a Mac Mini 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB RAM and 80GB hard drive, OS 10.4.10 and Excel 2004. At work I have an IBM Thinkpad 1.6GHz Intel Pentium Pro with 1.2GB RAM and 40GB hard drive, Windows XP and Excel 2003. I have an excel spreadsheet that takes 3 minutes to recalculate on the IBM Thinkpad. But on the Mac Mini it takes over 7 minutes and some times stops recalculating.
Why is there such a huge difference in performance? What could be making the performance on my Mac Mini so slow?

I've had Macs at home and PC's at work for many years. But this is the widest performance gap on spreadsheets that I've ever experienced. My old G4 was close to my old desktop PC at work when processing the same spreadsheet. Is there anything else that may be going on? Or anything to improve performance? One thing I've noticed is when I select the excel icon and get info, nowhere do I find this open with rosetta option that I've seen talked about. The app clearly says it's a PowerPC app, so shouldn't that option show up under get info, or did that go away under 10.4.10?

  • Xcode 4.0.2 is very slow on Mac Mini

    Hi,
I have installed xcode 4.0.2 on my Mac Mini, but it is keeping the system very slow.

I have a Mac Mini 2010 with RAM 4 Gb and the Xcode works very good.
I precisely bought it with 4 Gb thinking in it.
Without more information (RAM, model, year), I can not say you more. ¿cleaning?

  • Wifi LAN VERY slow on mac mini 10.6.8

    All,
I have a mac mini 1.66 intel core Duo with 2gb of RAM.  The HD crashed a couple months ago and so it has a clean version of 10.6.8 on it.
In my house I have a Motorola modem (comcast) hooked to a vonage box with wifi.  Off this we run 2 MBP's a wifi printer, and the Mini.
Both MBP's will get 10mb down and 3-5mb up on speedtest.net.
The Mini will get .9 down and .7 or so up.  It also became non-responsive using VNC to control it, so it's not so much that the internet is slow, but more that it just isn't connecting to the LAN with any speed.  It is connected to my router (no security)  with a signal/noise of -75/-98 and a transmit rate of 48.
I had shared my Dish Network box out via ethernet (airport sharing to ethernet) and had done the terminal prompt fix which is found all over the net to allow DHCP on internet sharing.  However, it doesn't matter if I turn off internet sharing, the local speeds are still just terribly slow.
This is a big problem since it's used as our media center for streaming netflix, etc...
    Any help?  Where to start?
    Thanks,

If reinstalling doesn't help, you'll probably need to contact Macroplant support:

  • Slow performance (mac min )

I bought a mac mini (i5 ) a month ago and i am afraid that i am quite disapointed by the mac mini. It works fine for 15 minutes, but after that, it becoms very slow. i hope there is a fix for this.

  • How do I slow my mac mini (2007)'s 5501 rpm fans

Hi,  I have a old 2007 mac mini that I recently had taken to best buy to upgrade the ram, after the upgrade it is always loud and Istat says that the fan is at ~5500 RPM and another mac (which is silent) says only 1800 rpm under the same (and higher) workload. the loud mac has temperature of (according to Istat):
    hard drive:81 degrees F
    CPU: 94 F
    CPU Heatsink: 83 F
    Northbridge 1: 85 F
    Northbridge 2: 81 F
the computer is cool to the touch
Please help me slow down the overactive fan on this mac, ~patrick

I have no idea if they removed, damaged or just forgot to plug the sensor back in. You really should take it back and make whomever worked on it fix the problem.
If you want to look at the teardown yourself, see > Mac Mini Repair - iFixit
Also if you do not feel comfortable with the service you received at BestBuy, report them to Apple and take it to another Authorized Apple Service Provider or Apple Store.

  • Slow 2012 mac mini

What's typically behind the slowing of a Mac Mini?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

  • Browsing is very slow on Mac Mini connected to 100mbit LAN. FTP and file download is very fast.

    Hi all
I have a strange behaviour of my Mac MIni 2012. The mini is connected to the internet by LAN. When I download a file via http or ftp everything is very fast (arround 95mbit/s). But when I try to open a website in Safari, Chrome or Firefox i have to wait some seconds until the page starts rendering.after the page is rendered completely, everything works fast and smooth.
Do you have any ideas where the problem migth be? I have reinstalled Mavericks from zero yesterday. The problem resists. With my Macbook Air (conntected to the same router) and my Windows computer I dont have this problem.
THanks in advance for your help.

By any chance, do you run sophos?  I had the same issue as you and fixed it on my mac mini and macbook pro by doing the following:
Sophos --> Open Preferences --> Web Protection --> General
You will need to enter your admin password after clicking the padlock in the bottom left to allow you to change settings.
From there, deactivate "Block access to malicious websites using realtime URL reputation checks".  For good measure, I also deactivated "Block malicious downloads from websites".
    Hope this helps!

    Hello,
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    old... http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106653
Hi, this has worked for a few...
Though all of these steps may or may not be needed, I'm including them all.
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).
    Click OK.

  • Airport very slow with Mac mini

I have a Powerbook and a Mac Mini. Both have airport wireless internet.
When I put them side-by-side, the Powerbook gets a strong internet connection, the Mac mini is very weak and often loses the internet altogether.
Both the Powerbook and Mini have 1 GB Ram.
Seems like they should get identical or at least very similar reception.
    Help!

Yes, I would expect them to have roughly similar reception.
The Mac mini is certainly still under warranty. The Airport card inside your Mac mini is not considered to be a user-serviceable part. Therefore best solution - take your Mac mini to your Apple dealer, explain the problem, and get them to fix it.
