Slow or no thumbnail generation

Hi
I am having a problem with the generation of thumbnails in my project window in Premiere Pro. When i hold the cursor over the thumbnail area the thumbnail shows (se screenshot). This is a large project with 40hours of material, and a about 200 large still images. Do you have any ideas of how to solve this problem?

  • Aperture thumbnail generation forever

    Hello
    I like to have all my pictures in one place to share them with apple tv, so I decided to give aperture a try.
    I imported all images (about 36000 from 12 years) into one aperture library.
    Before importing I switched off face detection and preview generation.
    After finishing I had a 236 GB library, but aperture starts to generate some thumbnails.
    Problem is, it freezes on generating them.
    I used the activity window to hunt down what is happeing and found out that it stops when it comes to a specific picture.
    So I managed to
    1) start aperture
    2) open activity window
    3) stop the thumbnail generation when it starts
    4) delete the picture where the aperture have problems
    This way I managed to get from about 5700 thumbanisl to do to a number of 3500 thumbnails to do, but aperture keeps freezing at a single pic (the bad one)
    But now, aperture starts thumbnail generation so quickly that I cannot open activity window and stop the progress before it reaches the bad one.
    @Apple: could we have an option like "safe start" that won't schedule any processes for thumbnails before the user wants it?
    So, any ideas out there? I tried everything I found like repairing, rebuilding, no help.
    Is there any kind of log to look into? I am a newbie in mac os and aperture.
    Regards
    Klaus

    This "bad" one is a video, some of the former bad ones were videos too, so does aperture have a problem in general with video files? Maybe its a good idea to just import all pictures and do the videos in a separate step afterwrds? Otherwise with 36000 pics (and about 300 videos between them) this is tedious...
    Klaus,
    Aperture may have a problem with videos, if you have a problematic video codec installed, if the video is corrupted, or incompatible with Aperture. What kind of videos did you import?
    If you can, delete the whole project, so that you do not need to select the video and reimport only the image files.
    Check, if you have the 3ivxVideoCodec installed - if yes, remove it,
    see: Aperture 3: May be unresponsive or have slower performance with third-party video codec
    This codec could have been installed for example by FlipForMac.
    If you do not want to delete all of your last import, you could try to delete the bad video directly from the Aperture library package:
    Quit Aperture. Ctrl-click the Aperture library and select "Show Package Content" from the pop-up menu. Open the "masters" folder and navigate to the Year-Month-day of your last import. If you can find the video there, remove it, but don't change anything else. Afterwards the video should show as missing. Delete the version from the library. The dates in the Library package are based on "Import session", not capture dates.
    Before manipulating the Library, make sure you have a current backup.

    I have an iMac4.1 and my iPhoto is very slow and the thumbnails correspond to the wrong pictures.  How do I fix this? Or is my iMac too old?  Will getting a new iMac solve this problem?
    I realize is only 512MB of memory but I want to make sure that a new iMac will solve this problem.  Can the new iPhoto handle 10GB or more of photos?  Or do I have to go to Picasa anyways in which case I can buy any computer to do that?

    The model of Mac is not partcularly relevant, it's the version of the OS and iPhoto that matter.
    iPhoto - since 2006 - is good for 250,000 images.

  • Thumbnail Generation Logic is weird?

    I have been spending some time on Aperture for the last couple of days with Trial version 2.1. As you know, if thumbnail is not generated (and cached of course) for an image, Aperture will show a fuzzy/blurred image in Browser Mode, and that will get clear as Aperture generates the thumbnail. As far as I can see here is how thumbnails (rendering/generation/caching) work on Aperture:
    1. Aperture has some kind of a "smart" algorithm (which really is not that smart at all, at least for me) to select candidates for thumbnail generation (will go into this a bit more below)
    2. Menu option: Images -> Generate thumbnails is quite useless in that it does not care what images you select (almost none) if you select more than 5-10 images. For example, select 500 images and hit Images->Generate thumbnails, it ignores what you selected and goes with its own selection algorithm. Having said that, selected images might have some kind of an influence on this, but it definitely does not render it for all 500 images, e.g. it will render 10-20 images around the current window...
    3. "Smart" selection algo is not that smart I said, because it tries to select images around what you are viewing, but keep failing to do so. For example, in brower only window, hit page down couple of times, and it starts generating thumbnails for a few items on the current window/view pane, but not all!... So, it ends up generating thumbnails for like 3-4 only out of 20, and you end up with a page that has 80% broken thumbnails, 20% properly generated ones.
    4. For the 80% in (3), you click on one of the images, then it starts rendering/generating the thumbnail for that particular image. Sometimes it does this in batches, e.g. you click on one and it renders that one, the one on the left and right as well, but sometimes only the one you clicked.
    5. Sometimes for the same 80% in (3), you select a few images and it renders these as you select them. Sometimes it just does not. If it does not, you can hit Generate Thumbnails and it will generate it for the few.
    6. What is even weirder is that, for the 80% in (3), you select some images, and it does nothing. But, then you change the focus (e.g. alt+tab to a different window) and come back to Aperture, and it will start rendering...
    All in all, it is quite annoying to have inconsistent behavior like this, and the fact that Generate Thumbnails is useless is something I find really stupid! If it is there, it should work, if it is not intended to what it does, you should remove it...
    I am soo ready to buy Aperture, but this thumbnail generation stupidity and constant fight with Aperture to get proper thumbnails is driving me nuts...

    I really need to use a program that allows call via command line as ImageMagick to use it in an application .Net, I can generate the thumbnails with Illustrator CS5 files, but can not generate from Illustrator CS6 files, this error only appears with files from CS6, as if you know help me thank you.

  • PDF thumbnail generation has stopped working

    Hello Together,
    formerly I was using Adobe Reader X at an actual Patch Level on a 64 Bit Windows 7 system. At that time PDF thumbnails were no subject for me. Now I've upgraded to Adobe Acrobat X Pro and uninstalled Adobe Reader X. Then I wanted to use the thumbnails. That was no problem as I found a link to a tool which fixed my issue: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/305220
    Everything worked fine for me, until I noticed that one of my applications needed an installed Adobe Reader to work properly. So I reinstalled the Adobe Reader on my system again. This caused to stop the thumbnail generation: PDF files which existed prior to the Adobe Reader installation still have a thumbmail icon preview, but those who were generated after the installation still appear as a PDF icon.
    Before installation the fix from thread 305220 my workaround was to open Acrobat X, the navigate to the open dialog, moving to the folder with the PDFs within and wait that Acrobat finished the thumbnail generation. But this workaround now is out of service, too. So my assumption is, that reinstalling Adobe Reader screwed up something in my Adobe installation which I cannot find at the moment which has nothing to do with the initial problem with displaying thumbnails.
    Performing some repair installation didn't help:
       (1) repair Adobe Reader, then repair Adobe Acrobat --> no change
       (2) repair Adobe Acrobat, then repair Adobe Reader --> no change
       (3) repair Adobe Reader only --> no change
       (4) repair Adobe Acrobat only --> no change
       (1), then apply fix from thread 305220 --> no change
       (2), then apply fix from thread 305220 --> no change
       (3), then apply fix from thread 305220 --> no change
       (4), then apply fix from thread 305220 --> no change
       apply fix from thread 305220, then (1) --> no change
       apply fix from thread 305220, then (2) --> no change
       apply fix from thread 305220, then (3) --> no change
       apply fix from thread 305220, then (4) --> no change
    I hope, that I'm not the only one who got this problem and, hopefully, someone found a solution for this.

    Why not?
    Did you at least download & read the user manual?
    You can always call Apple Care if you are still under warranty.  Otherwise, take your iPod to an Apple Store or an AASP.

  • Very slow scrolling window thumbnails clips

    Very slow scrolling windows with thumbnail clips. The more files in the event, the worse it gets. It is very frustrating. Is in others it is the same? I have MacOookPro i7 early 2011, thunderbolt drives RAID0, 16GB memory, FCPX 10.0.7. After the hardware is decent.
    Give some feedback, thank you.
    P.S. I might add that this disadvantage are found from version 10.0.0.

    You might want to look at either booting from your install dvd (insert, restart and hold 'C' down) and running disk repair from Utilities. Alternatively, and I always suggest any Mac user should have at least one, a 3rd party disk utility like DiskWarrior (there are others) is extremely useful.

  • Slowing Down Scrolling Thumbnails

    Hello everyone,
    I've put together one of those great masked scrolling
    thumbnail panels by working through a tutorial. I'd like to slow it
    down a bit, could someone suggest how this is done. Here's the
    code:
    panel.onRollOver = panelOver;
    function panelOver() {
    this.onEnterFrame = scrollPanel;
    delete this.onRollOver;
    var b = stroke.getBounds(_root);
    function scrollPanel() {
    if(_xmouse<b.xMin || _xmouse>b.xMax ||
    _ymouse<b.yMin || _ymouse>b.yMax) {
    this.onRollOver = panelOver;
    delete this.onEnterFrame;
    if(panel._y >= 60) {
    panel._y = 60;
    if(panel._y <= -1000) {
    panel._y = -1000;
    var xdist = _ymouse - 250;
    panel._y += Math.round(-xdist / 7);
    Thanks.
    Darren.

    >>panel._y += Math.round(-xdist / 7);
    I'd start here, by dividing by a number greater than 7.

  • Very slow to show thumbnails of EOS 5DMarkII

    I've just bought a mackbook pro with preinstalled aperture 2 (snow leopard 10.6).
    I use a canon 5DMarkII since few months and I would like to import my images into aperture.
    I've imported 20 images in a new project. But, the creation of thumbnails is very slow (after 2 hours there is no thumbnails visible...).
    If i visit this page http://www.apple.com/fr/aperture/specs/raw.html the 5DmarkII is not supported. Is that true ?
    It's terrible if aperture 2 is not able to work with the camera.
    Do you have any experience ?
    Thanks

    That's definitely not right, I use a 5d2 and if you have 4gb of Ram you should be fine. Check these things:
    1. Make sure your GPU is set to Dedicated/performance under the energy saver system preferences.
    2. Go into your aperture preferences and under "previews" turn off "new projects automatically generate previews", and turn on "use embedded JPEG from camera when possible".
    3. Unless you want to use high quality previews, turn on a size limitation for previews down to the size of your monitor.
    Other tips:
    If you have a new macbook, you can also benefit from booting into 64 bit kernel (from my experience) hold down 6 and 4 while booting or read up on how to activate the 64 bit kernel by default in the Boot.plist preference file.
    I also recommend not using a "managed" library which will allow you to move your master RAWS around if needed, and create a workflow opportunity similar to video editing with online/offline media. The easiest way to do this is to decide on a folder you want to store all your RAW files, and then in the aperture import dialog where it says "store files in aperture library" - change that to your own folder, and decide on your own subfolder structure - (for example, use /"project name"/"year"/"month") or whatever makes most sense for you. I shoot weddings and never shoot more than 9999 pictures a wedding, so I just use "/project name" - This way when I need to archive a job and its raw masters, I can pull that Folder of Raws off my machine and move it on to backup, but i can still keep the library intact if I need to find a file, I can easily pull the raw back online.

  • CS6 E Bridge Slow to load thumbnails, 'building criteria'

    When Bridge opens on the folder it was last opened/closed in, it takes a long time to load, constantly 'building criteria' as if all the images are newly imported. I've searched the forums, have tried all the tweaks and settings, but it's still iceberg slow.  Bridge CS5 is noticeably quicker, as if the cache info is being read immediately. CS6 is behaving as if the cache file has been deleted. It hasn't. I have tried the "flush the cache" to see if maybe it's corrupted. No joy. I have boosted cache size. No joy. I've compacted, automatically exported cache to folders, everything... Nothing seems to fix the snail slowness.
    All Adobe updates have been applied.
    i7-2600s @2.80GHz
    8 gb DDRw ram
    Nvidia GeForce GT420 1gb DDR3
    6+ tbs hd space.

    I could understand the glacial slowness if the beta version had also been so slow. Or if CS5 Bridge was also as slow.
    Did not read this whole (long) thread but in general when a previous version of Bridge did work faster then the following this almost certainly is related to your system itself.
    While building criteria in filter panel has a mind of its own and especially when opening a second window to fast (when first window is just finished caching or building filter panel) it may take ages. closing this window and open a new one usually succeeds.
    However when this always takes a long time the problem seems related to the cache (most Bridge problems are...)
    Purging cache using preferences or menu commands is not always the correct solution. Using Bridge CS5 and PS CS6 is also not the perfect solution.
    If you can spare the time you should consider a proper back up of custom settings, actions tools, keywords, templates etc. and a complete reinstall.
    I don't have the correct info for Windows and searching on Adobe.com isn't easy anymore. Here are some old Knowledge base articles (it's about CS4 but changes are locations are still the same)
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/move-actions-presets-workspaces-photoshop.html
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/preference-file-functions-names-locations-1.html
    and also read about the Adobe Cleaner Tool and decide if this is an option for you.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
    If you decide to reinstall:
    Deactivate the software and use the official uninstaller that comes with the application itself and then use the clean tool for Adobe:
    Double check if your Cache folder has been deleted (I'm on Mac, don't know the location for Windows but on Mac it is in the user library caches folder)
    Install CS6 again. Obvious you have to set your custom preferences again and also need to recache your files but if you have a main folder with many subfolders containing the files just select the main folder and in the menu View select 'show items for subfolders' and let it do it's caching overnight.
    In my experience every new version of CS has been faster and more stable (well, except the disaster CS3 version for Bridge...) then its predecessor.

  • Camera RAW and Elements Hang during Thumbnail Generation...

    Ever since I upgraded to the newest version of Camera Raw, I have been having issues with Photoshop Elements hanging while automatically generating thumbnails, anyone else notice this issue?
    Hang is not quite the right description... So I import a batch of pictures and PSE starts processing the files ("Generating Thumbnails" is in the tool bar at the bottom). After a few images are processed, it just stops. If I try to force an update of the thumbnail ("Update Thumbnail" option under the Edit menu), a broken image just come back. No mater what I do, it just sits there and will not resolve the thumbnail issue until I close out PSE and go into task manager and make sure that the task is killed.
    On the other hand, while I can not get the thumbnails generated, I can go into the Editor with a raw image and it opens in Camera Raw without any problems.
    Anyone else having similar issues? Know anything to try?
    * Yes I have the most recent version of Camera Raw. When I downgrade to an older version of Camera Raw, the issue seems to go away.
    * I can not use the old version all the time because I have a Nikon D300, which is only supported in the newest version. I confirmed the working of things with some of my D200 files.
    * I am using Photoshop Elements 6.0, mainly for organization of all my images because I take a lot of them.
    * I am doing this on a Windows XP x64 machine
    * Based on a post someplace, I did check that my default printer on my machine is set to a printer that is always on the machine (PDF writer) and not a network printer/printer that has been disconnected.
    Thank you for any help/suggestions that anyone can give me...
    -Matt

    Have you tried the Elements forum?
    Not many visitors here have Elements, mostly PSCS and Bridge.
    If you where using Bridge I would suggest to purge cache and or refresh the preferences but I have no clue if this is possible in Elements? :-(
    Edit:
    Do you have enough RAM installed, generating thumbnails from RAW can take a lot of energy from the OS...

  • Thumbnail generation in windows service

    I try to create thumbnails for pdf files using the microsoft windowns 7 api codepack.
    If I use this code from a normal desktop application everything works fine.
    But if I use it from a windows service, to create thumbnails for our document manager, I get the folowing Exception:
    System.NotSupportedException: The current ShellObject does not have a valid thumbnail handler or there was a problem in extracting the thumbnail for this specific shell object. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: Klasse nicht registriert (Ausnahme von HRESULT: 0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG))
    With Word and Excel files it also works inside the windows service, so I think its a problem with Acrobat Reader.
    What can I do to fix the problem?

    I think section 3.2 of the Adobe Reader license agreement means that the technical failure is not relevant. http://wwwimages.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/legal/licenses-terms/pdf/Reader_11.0.pdf page 86

  • Easy DMS - disable / control thumbnail generation

    Hi,
    I have set up DMS and everything works fine, except...
    EasyDMS ist producing thumbnails from various files and I don't know where to control this behaviour. I have not set up anything according to thumbnails in SPRO. In EasyDMS preferences is nothing to change and the registry gives no solution, too.
    It's generating bmp thumbnails even from jpg's, curious!
    System is ECC 6.0 with EasyDMS 6.0 SP07.

    I'm out of office next week 20-24.08.07 it might take a while to read and answer, depends on availability of internet access.

    Hi,
    Please set the registry entry under this path. Create en REG_DWORD type entry - name it 'DisableThumbnails' (without qoutes) and set it to 1. Then restart easyDMS.

  • Help with photo thumbnail generation process please.

    Using Dreamweaver MX 2004 on Windows.  I have several digital photos that I want to get into a table as 1x1 thumbnails that are linked to the actual photos. Each thumbnail would open up the actual picture by itself.  I've seen software around that generates these types of pages programatically but I can't seem to find any.  Can you folks suggest some options for me please?  Thanks!
    FREE would be good.

    Do you mean a program that will generate thumbnails or a program that will generate the web gallery in a table?  Or do you mean a program that will do both?
    If you have several images - I take that to mean less than a dozen ;-) - you could look into using a lightbox script but that doesn't mean using a table and it would mean a little bit of coding.
    I use a free image viewer called irfanView which according to the link below will generate a web gallery:
    http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/webgallery/ht/irfanwebgallery.htm
    I have never used it for that.  irfanview is used quite widely.  Generally speaking, programs that generate a web gallery like this aren't often rated that much.

  • Quicklook thumbnail generation without folded corner

    If you look at the thumbnail icon in List or Column view in Finder, a JPEG image is not shown with a folded corner. However when I write a quicklook plugin using the XCode 3 wizard, I get folded corners on the icons.
    Can anyone assist me in suppressing the corners, and making it just a plain image?
    It might be a start if I could locate the PLIST for the plugin that actually provides thumbnails for JPEGs, but I can't seem to find it.
    I have found somewhere that this can be done by adding QLDisableIconCorners = on to the QL plugin's PLIST, but this doesn't seem to help me.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Neil

    Thought I better clarify that I'm using QLThumbnailRequestSetImageWithData to generate the thumbnail, and passing it an JPEG or an ICNS file. Same results for both.

  • CS3 Bridge Thumbnail Generation

    When I start Bridge and go to an existing folder, the thumbnails (previously cropped and adjusted) are re-generated (updating percentage shown at bottom left on status line).  Shouldn't Bridge use the thumbnails from the last time this folder was viewed and not have to re-generate them each time?  Under Edit/Preferences/Thumbnails/When Creating Thumbnails Generate=High Quality Thumbnails.  Does my Bridge cache size need to be increased?
    Tim

    If  you use HQ thumbnails, and especially with 100% previews, if can take a lot of space.  If space is limited the older thumbs are overwritten, so they have to be regenerated.  I assume that this means they are no longer indexed and that would also affect the search function.
    I would recommend you compact the cache regularly to get rid of orphan files.  This can free up lots of space if you have not done it for awhile.
    I have my cache on a partition of 40 gigs and I have about 19 gigs free. And yet when I visit a folder I have not seen for awhile it has to regenerate the thumbs, and I use quick thumbs.  So I  don't know how long the thumbs stay before being overwitten, or why they are being overwritten.
