Slow PDF Viewing in Yosemite

Hello,
Since Yosemite Beta, Safari makes viewing PDF very slow. I don't have the problem if I download the PDF and use Preview app.
I have a rMBP late 2013 i7 16GB. It's even slow when having a few pages open. Firefox doesn't have this problem.
Also it seems that randomly Safari starts to use the discrete graphics.
This is very very very annoying.
Any ideas? Or we have to wait Apple to fix this ****.. they must be pretty idle knowing how the "new" ipad is the same as before.

@spyder90230, Apple does not read this forum, please leave a comment here:
Let Apple now about this issue:

Hopefully if enough people report it it will be eventually fixed.
It is extremely frustrating not being able to use .pdf documents in a 2,000 USD computer

  • Slow PDF Viewer Plug-In

My supervisor has a brand new computer with good specs, running Windows 7. It has the newest version of Internet Explorer 9 and Adobe Reader XI. When she clicks on a pdf in IE9, it takes maybe one full minute for it to open. This is regardless of the file size or number of pages. Then if she clicks the Print icon, it takes maybe another 15 seconds for the print window to open. When she is finally able to click the OK button to print, it still takes another 30 seconds to reach the print queue.
I saw online that you can go into Adobe Reader under "Edit> Preferences> Internet> uncheck "Display PDF in browser" and PDF files will then open in Adobe Reader, not Internet Explorer. When I did this, they still opened in IE9. And to be honest, Adobe Reader XI (not the plug-in) seems to be running a little slow also.
Any suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Check the system for virii and spyware.  If the system is clesn temporarily turn off the virus protection and see if the behavior changes.

  • PDF Viewing Slow

Some recent software upgrade has made PDF viewing on safari ridiculously slow.
Safari acts like it is only downloading one page at a time. Advancing forward or retreating backwards in any PDF takes a huge amount of time. In addition, the scroll bar acts like there is only one page
    Mountain Lion

Problems scrolling through PDFs is a very common issue when using RDP.  I recommend you look at Ericom Blaze, a software product that accelerates AND compresses standard Microsoft RDP, so it speeds RDP while conserving bandwidth. Blaze accelerates RDP performance by as much as 10-25 times, and helps deliver higher frame rates and reduce screen freezes and choppiness.
You can read more about Blaze and download a free evaluation at:

  • How can I/Can I make Firefox the default .PDF viewer in Windows 7?

For the basic PDF viewing I do, Adobe Reader is just slow and annoying. I love using Firefox, but unfortunately I cannot set it as the default program to open PDF files. Even when I select Firefox after right clicking and select open with, Windows does not comply. Is there a config option I can change that will allow me to set Firefox as the default PDF reader.
    Thank you for your help.

You can not make Firefox the default for viewing PDF files for the entire Windows Operating System, only the default viewer from within Firefox. Like when PDF files that are downloaded from websites and displayed in Firefox; you can try using '''File > Open File''' from within Firefox to view PDF file that are already saved on that PC, but I'm not sure that will work - I haven't tried doing that.

  • PDF viewer doesn't work in FF 36.0.4 for Mac

Macbook Pro with Yosemite and FF 36.0.4: Built in PDF viewer no longer works. Clicking on PDF links in search engines does not bring up the built in viewer.
Restoring FF 35 restores the PDF viewer.

I understand that the PDF viewer in Firefox is no longer working. I have reset the application settings for the pdf file mimetype in the Firefox Application settings.
*[[Applications panel - Set how Firefox handles different types of files]]
If the default continues not to work after resetting this setting, please check out a work around:
In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and click Options (Preferences for Linux and Mac).
#In the Options (Preferences for Linux and Mac) window, select the ''Applications'' panel.
#In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
#On the right hand side you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose ''Preview in Firefox''.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

  • Pdf viewer/ v1.4.1

Try this- open a large PDF, zoom in on an area and wait for the Pre to autooff. When I resume, the PDF viewer has crashed.. There is a spinning circle in the top right corner and if you enter a new page number, the total page count disappears.
Also, when are we going to get an app that uses the accelerometer? My Nokia and Samsung terminals rotate the screen when you move the phone.. maybe its me, but I don't consider this an option these days, it's basic functaionaly. Why the Pre so behind the curve?!! On the pre, only the browser app works in panorama?? With PDFs and the tiny screen, you need to zoom and the extra width would really useful.
Finally, with a touch phone, you kind of expect to be able to swipe to the next page or back a page.

I've been unable to replicate this behavior.  The largest PDF on my phone right now is a 3.2M document.  It is certainly a little slower to navigate than a smaller document, and reaction time to pinch/zoom actions lags slightly.  But I have not had the app crash as you describe.

  • Safari 6 Slow PDF Scroll and Behavior !!!!

    ! Hi !
I've just upgraded from Lion to ML and noticed something wierd.  If I open a pdf link in Safari 6, and the embedded PDF viewer starts, safari becomes Slow scrolling the PDF and sometimes Stops for 2 pr 3 seconds.
Is Anyone having the same problem?
    Can someone help me?
    Best Regards,
    Stejimenez

Just adding my $.02 here as well, Safari Version 6.0 (8536.25) seems buggy, for example, right now none of my keyboard shortcuts work, changing tabs, back, or the mouse gestures like back or scrolling do not work.
    for clairfication I'm on a Macbook Pro 17 OS X 10.8 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
I use the following key commands in chrome and used to use them in Safari before Mountain Lion upgrade:
⌘ ←  to go back (doesn't work in Safari 6.0)
⌘⌥← (or ⌘⌥→) to switch tabs (doesn't work in Safari 6.0)
I use the following gestures in chrome and used to use them in Safari before Mountain Lion upgrade:
two-finger vertical swipe to scroll (doesn't work in Safari 6.0)
three-finger horzontal swipe to the left to go back (doesn't work in Safari 6.0)
Through further testing I think it's site specific, gestures do not work while on stackoverflow or facebook, but do work on w3cschools and wordpress.org -- huh.

  • Reinstate Preview as PDF viewer for Safari

I am trying to get Preview to work as the default PDF viewer in Safari. I have deleted the Adobe Reader and Silverlight plug-ins from Library/Internet Plug-ins. I selected Preview as the default app for PDFs (all instances) in the info pane of a PDF. I restarted Safari and rebooted the Mac. Now it seems that Safari has no ability to view a PDF inline; it immediately downloads any PDF I click on and opens it with Preview.
I looked for a way to reinstall Safari, although I'm not sure that is a solution, but did not find a Safari download on the Apple website. Do I need a plug-in or should the functionality be built into the browser?
How do I get a PDF file to display as a web page in Safari using Preview?
    Thanks -
**OS X 10.10 Yosemite on a Macbook Pro Retina 13"

    HI,
Right or control click a PDF file on your hard drive. Then click: Get Info
In the Get Info window click the pop up menu where you see: Open with.
Select Preview. If Preview isn't available from the list click: Other
Navigate to the Preview app and select it then click the Change All button.

  • Format on HTML report different than on PDF view

I have a Quote report based on Product Revenue that we send to our customers. I have it formatted nicely when initially displayed and also when viewed with the Printer Friendly HTML option. But... when I view it as a PDF, it is not even close.
The layout of the report uses a narrative section with HTML formatting to get the elements to align correctly, per the documentation. The HTML I use is as follows:
    Narrative Section formatting code:
    <table width="600">
    <tr><td colspan=3>  <div align="center"><b><font size="5" face="Times">
      @10</font><br>

    </tr>
      <tr> <th width="250"><div align="left">Quote Details</div></th> <th width="50">   </th><th width="300"><div align="left">Sales Manager Info:</div></th></tr>
    <tr>
    <td>Quote ID: @9</td><td> </td><td>Name: @16</td></tr>

    <tr><td colspan=3><div align="center"><b>Phones - Cell:</b> @18, <b>Work:</b> @20, <b>Fax: </b> @19 </div></td></tr>
    </table>
Notes: @11Is there another way to get the HTML view and PDF view to look the same (or at least close)?
(more details and examples here --> [HTML and PDF Views|http://crm.nurserysupplies.com/images/CRM_HTML_and_PDF_views.doc])

To date, this is considered a product limitation. I just talked with an escalation manager regarding this very issue, and he offered to bring this up with the product managers/engineers on 5/15/09. I recommend escalating this issue and asking your escalation manager to do the same.

  • PDFs look different in Adobe reader and Acrobat professional compared to the built in PDF viewer on windows 8

    Hi there,
I have been trying to narrow down an issue we have been having for some time in printing PDF files and finding that they look different on paper compared to screen.  Up until today our big KIP plotter got the blame, but as I have been collecting notes on a little windows 8 tablet I noted that PDFs opened in the windows PDF viewer have the same visual defects as the printouts.  My example today is that on a CAD drawing there is a small box/frame with a number in their, I tried printing and the frame was completely blacked out.  As a test I tried saving the PDF as a TIFF file from Adobe Acrobat professional and this file had the same fault as the printed copy.  When I open it in the windows 8 pdf viewer I can see that there is a shading within this box that does not show on Adobe Reader (latest version 11.0.10.32), the adobe reader and acrobat pro version both show a white background to the box.  We have been having lots of issues with sections being missing from drawings and overly feint lines.
I am not sure where to start trying to narrow down why we are getting different results in different PDF readers.  Is there anyone who maybe able to point me in the right direction?  It almost feels like the shading or colour density is not being consistent when PDFs are being opened in different packages.
    Thanks in advance
    Andy

Some PDF viewers comply with the PDF ISO Standard (ISO 32000) "just enough" while others (such as Adobe's) fully comply.
As with anything there's a cost to using anything that comes from a "just enough" approach.
    Be well...

That means you are looking at the form online with a browser that uses its own (incompatible) PDF viewer, not the Adobe Reader plugin.
    Either
download the form to your local disk and fill it from there
use a browser that employs the Adobe Reader plugin

  • I'm unable to read pdfs in what I'd call Mozilla's pdf-viewer (ie. in a new tab, but inside the browser). This broke between morning and afternoon of 15.10.14.

I have followed instructions on a forum on checking through 'Options' that my browser is still set to open pdfs inside Mozilla and it is.
It frequently comes up with a bar along the top saying 'This PDF might not be displayed correctly.' Then a button 'Open in Different Viewer', which I've tried pressing, but nothing has happened. (I don't actually want to open it in a different viewer, I want to open in Mozilla).
I'm currently doing a lot of research work and this makes it a lot longer so would REALLY appreciate any help :)

The built-in viewer has limitations, definitely. If you prefer that to Adobe Acrobat, you might try the latest "Development" version of the viewer, which may have improved feature support but with its limited test cycle, could be more crashy. There's a link to it about halfway down this page under Firefox:
    https://github.com/mozilla/pdf.js
Otherwise, you might need to use the Acrobat plugin. (I think you have seen the article, but just in case: [[How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer]].)
