Slow performance, cannot find cause.

I have a white Macbook that was purchased new in the spring of 2008. Recently it has been having problems. It takes a very long time to open applications and cannot do as many things as it should as quickly as it should given that it has 4GB of RAM. When online it loads pages painfully slowely, often hanging on the "connecting" or "transferring data" stages indefinitely. Sometimes it loses connection completely or cannot find a webpage, eg: google, and then offers website suggestions... which include google. Even more frequently it gives the error that the server "www.google.com" could not be found, as if I weren't connected even though I am.
My father has the exact same model computer as mine and does not have this problem. I cannot find any difference in the settings between his and mine, though I don't know too much about computer workings so I may not have checked everywhere.
My father took my computer to a tech support guy at his work that specializes in Macs. He said the HD was running slow, though he didn't have enough time to check out why or much else. He said it could possibly be a virus.
I've run three different anti-virus programs and none of the scans picked up anything.I've done disc repair to repair the permissions (the disc checked out fine). OnyX also verified that the SMART status of my HD was fine, and the disc itself was fine. I cleared all caches with OnyX and then with Cocktail, to no effect.
My computer is still under warranty, and I plan to send it to Apple to have them look at it. However if anyone knows or has an idea of what's going on I would greatly appreciate the input. Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Hi, Huffy,
sorru for your problems.
some people here maintain that there are no viruses for Macs. Thus, we should look for another problem.
first of all, try to eliminate obvious hardware problems. Run the Apple Hardware test - look here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509. A bad Harddisk should show up, i think.
Next,it looks to me s if all the problems you describe are in fact internet connection problems; those should in first instance not depend on a slow disk, but on a connection problem. How are you connected? wireless, I suppose. Can you, just for a test, get connected directly by ethernet cable? if things are working fine with ethernet, then it's not your Macbook, but the wireless connection (possibly with the airport within your MB...) If you are connected wireless: what signal strength do you have? my experience is that from 2 or 1 fat bars, the connection is slow to bad. three bars is the minimum for good performance.
Please, report back on these questions, and some people can help you further.

  • Domain acct lockout traced to win7 desktop-but cannot find cause?

Never had this much trouble and am puzzled. I have a user who has been experiencing random lockouts for months. Event logs point to his desktop. It is not coming from his mobile device. I have cleared his cached creds and reloaded his exchange profile in
    outlook, no luck.
It's hard to believe I cannot find the source of the lockout as I have it narrowed down to the workstation. Please let me know what additional info you may need. thanks for any input.

    Hi,
The Account Lockout Tools made the trace process somewhat easier.
For more information, please read this blog:
Tracing the Source of Account Lockouts

Meanwhile, please refer to this similar thread:

And since the root is Server side, I suggest you ask in Windows Server directory service forum for more professional solution.

  • G5 Tower - Extremely slow performance in Finder, hanging apps

    About the system:
    Power Mac G5
    2 x 2.5GHz CPU
    4.5 GB RAM (physical)
160 GB HDD (85 GB free - formatted Mac OS Extended Journaled)
OS 10.4.11 with latest software updates downloaded and installed
This box is running incredibly sluggish - apps are taking 20+ bounces just to open, as many as 10 to 30 seconds to simply open a folder from the desktop. Even trying to drag a window has a significant delay.
This all seemed to start when I copied to this machine, a backup of my music files library from an external drive that had been attached to another Mac (Intel Mini) - about 50GB of music, approximately 10k songs. I opened iTunes 8.0.2 (for the first time ever on the G5) and it hung trying to add the new files to the empty library. Since then, the entire machine seems to have been hosed. I realize the iTunes thing might be a red herring, but the problems coincided exactly with the new music and first launch of iTunes.
Since then, I've tried pretty much everything I could think of - ran the Disk Utility and OnyX utilities (all were clean), zapped the PRAM - even reinstalled Tiger. Same problems. Activity Monitor shows the CPU running at 98% - 99% idle when this is happening (although it takes 90 seconds to open Activity Monitor)and shows 3.92 GB of free RAM. So, the computer doesn't seem to be overworked.
Any thoughts or ideas would be most appreciated. Unfortunately, AppleCare is no more for this box...

Since the Power Mac seems to be running normally while booted from the DVD, it must be related to the hard drive in some way. If it has 85 GB of free space, it should not be a problem with lack of free space. If it was me, I would clone (exactly duplicate) the internal drive to an external FireWire drive using Carbon Copy Cloner. Then try to restart from the external drive.
If things operate normally while booted from the external, the current system installation is fine. I would then reformat (erase) the internal drive using Disk Utility. Then clone the external back to the internal. See if the internal now operates normally. It should. But if it does not, there is probably something wrong with the drive itself (a hardware problem).
If the problem recurs while booted from the external, there is something wrong with your general system installation. Creating another user account proved that the problem was not isolated to one user. In this case, you have two options. You can reinstall Mac OS X on the internal using the +Archive and Install+ option. This option will retain your user data and settings, but give you a fresh system. In case something bad happens, the clone on the external will serve as your backup. OR you can reinstall Mac OS X using the +Erase and Install+ option. This will give you a completely new installation on an blank volume, and you can migrate your data from the external drive after making sure everything is working normally.

  • Seemingly slow performance

I have an 8 month old iBook G4. I regularly play sim city 4 and command and conquer generals, and I have to set the all options to run the graphics and all the options at minimum so that I can get reasonable play speed and so that it doesn't momentarily pause. I also find that I occasionally get the spinning beach ball of death momentarily if I have 5 or 6 applications open. Is this normal for this type of machine ( i have fully updated tiger) or am I suffering from some issue that is slowing my machine.
I am a little bit miffed about this especially as apple is now selling the new macbook, which is about 10 times as good, for the same price!!!
    Thanks

How much RAM do you have installed, David?
What is your hard drive's capacity, and how much space remains available on it?
Slow performance can be caused by lack of RAM and/or hard drive space: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
How long has it been since you did any hard drive maintenance? If it's been awhile, try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, and repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.

  • How to find cause of db performance problem??

    Hi,
I am facing continuous performance issues with our database and for that I want to know how I can get information about the following points:
1- How to find most accessed table(s) or tables with highest hits or top queries is accessing which table(s)?
2- What indication can tell that a particular table need to be rebuilt?
3- When to rebuild indexes? and how to know that an indexed need to be rebuilt?
Your prompt reply is highly appreciated
    Thanks,
    Younis

    Hi,
a good starting point for investigating poor database performance is AWR (if you have a license for that) or statspack (if you don't). If you need help interpreting it, you can refer to J. Lewis's series on statspack reports (also applies to AWR):
    http://jonathanlewis.wordpress.com/2011/03/09/statspack-reports/
I have also made a few blog posts on this topic, see http://savvinov.com/tag/awr/
Regarding your other questions -- countrary to popular belief, rebuilding indexes or tables is seldom helpful. More often, performance problems are caused by bad execution plans (side effects of bind peaking, inaccurate statistics, correlated predicates etc.), data design issues, bad coding practices, not using bind variables etc.
Database performance topic is a huge topic and obviously cannot fit into a discussion thread. Christian Antognini's book "Oracle Performance Troubleshooting" can provide you a gentle introduction into performance tuning, provided you already have good familiarity with Oracle architecture.
Or, if you want help with your particular problem, post your AWR report here and briefly describe what your users are unhappy about -- there is a good chance that you get valuable feedback from several renowned experts.
    Good luck!
    Best regards,
    Nikolay

  • Bug report: Energy Manager causes slow performance...

    Very slow Windows Startup..
Energy Manager's plans and the problem occured using any plan as I remember, and it wasn't an issue with the maximum processor state. I had heavy disk usage, especially access to the Page File, which is what the person in the second link I posted also described. CPU usage was low. The disk usage was seemingly not related to Energy Manager (Chrome was usually the worst), but removing Energy Manager completely resolved the problem. If you would find it helpful. I'm quite confident that even with Maximum Processor state at %100, CPU usage was low when it was slow, and that disk access was the culprit.
previously have use 1.0.0.31 or 32 not sure.
    Windows 8.1
Im using Lenovo Energy Management Driver
    1.0.0.28
    4.6.2014

I actually have the same problem.  Sorry to work on a old thread, but...
I've got my Lenovo B50-70 less than 1 month ago, and had switched it to SSD and had set everything up and is working perfectly.  However there are a bunch of lenovo programs that came pre-installed.  This computer is used mainly for work and I really don't like programs that suddenly pop-up and ask you to do stuff, as it is quite distracting, and with Lenovo Energy Manager being one of them so I removed it.  (I did do some research before I remove...)
Everything was fine, until when I try to switch on my wifi (I usually have it off, as I use LAN most of the time)...  For the B50-70 there is a airplane button on F7, which allow the user to switch wifi and bluetooth on/off.  That button was unresponsive...  After some digging it is actually related to the power energy manager being removed.  So I've downloaded the latest version from Lenovo and it was working again...
However though, whenever I start my computer it is taking so long to start...  And I tried uninstalling the power energy manager and it solved the problem...  And I am stuck with either having no wifi on/off ability or a really slow boot, which loses the whole purpose of the SSD.  After you enter your username and password it originally takes around 5~10 seconds to login, now it takes over 1 minute.
I have found this other link, which says Lenovo Power Manager having the same problem.
    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Bug-report-Power-Manager-causes-slow-performa...
There is a solution, which you can change the registry to switch a function off.  I've tried it and it didn't work, which is not surprising as it's a different program..  But I am hoping that Lenovo can provide a similar solution for Lenovo Energy Manager...

  • [Forum FAQ] Cannot perform a backup schedule via Windows Server Backup and receive "The system cannot find the path specified." Error

    Symptom One
    You attempt to
schedule a backup every day via Windows Server Backup on Windows Server 2008 R2. At the beginning, the backup works without issue. But after a few days it failed and you receive the error “Windows Server Backup:
The system cannot find the path specified.”
    Cause
The issue may occur if there is
no shadow copy storage space available on the backup volume.
    Verify
You can use the List ShadowStorage command to check if you have enough storage space to store the newly created shadow copy. If you've reviewed the size of the backup snapshot and discovered
that there is no allocated space for the storage association, you need to resize shadowstorage.
    Solution
You could run the command below to create shadow copy storage space on the backup volume:
    vssadmin resize
    shadowstorage /for=<ForVolumeSpec> /on=<OnVolumeSpec> [/maxsize=<MaxSizeSpec>]
    More Information
    Vssadmin resize shadowstorage

    Symptom Two
    When you add
another external hard drive to backup schedule via Windows Server Backup on Windows Server 2012, it fails and you receive the error “The System cannot find the path specified.”
    Cause
The issue is due to the
Original Destination Disk was not attached to the server.
    Verify
You could check the disk status in Disk Management to see if the Original Destination Disk is offline or removed.
    Solution
    You need to attach
Original Destination Disk to the Server then choose another external hard drive as backup target. After that, you could remove the Original Destination Disk.
    Workaround
To work around this issue, please use the WBADMIN command line tool to add disk.
    WBADMIN ENABLE BACKUP -addtarget :{ DiskID}
The AddTarget parameter takes disk ID as parameter. It can be retrieved by running "WBADMIN GET DISKS" command.
    Example:
    WBADMIN ENABLE BACKUP
    -addtarget :{ aa123d14-bba0-1dd9-0d93-80aaaa6bbb63}
    More Information
    Wbadmin enable backup

  • On my 1st visit to a certain website, Firefox _very briefly_ asked whether to remember my username and password. I was too slow: the dialog bar disappeared and now, I cannot find where to enter that logon info for my daily returns to that site.

On only the very first visit to a website, Firefox _very briefly_ shows a "Do you want Firefox to remember this password?" dialog bar at top right of screen.
The first time that I used Firefox to access this particular, and very often visited site, I missed that dialog bar. It disappeared before I had a chance to mark any one of the three boxes and now, I must enter my log-in information anew at every log-on to that site.
There _must_ be a way to get Firefox to give me a second chance for entering this info, but I cannot find how.
    Can someone please help?

After first closing the site's browser window, I cleared the cookies with no problem.
Next, I opened up the page that is causing my problem. The Microsoft Security window opened up as it should and it was blank.
The option of whether I was using a public or a private
computer was blinking on 'public' as it should and I changed that to 'private'.
The lines for 'Domain/Username' and 'Password" were blank, as they should be at this time.
I entered whatever I had to on these two lines, then clicked on "log In". At no time, however, did the Firefox toolbar at top of screen (picture file attached) appear and ask whether to remember that password. Yes, the page now opened - and we are back to Square One.
I am aware that when entering the URL in the address box, a dropdown box opens and contains quite a few URLs identical to the one I am entering just now, or at least connected to pages of the same site.
I am wondering whether that is what's messing me up? But how can I clear these entries of "websites visited in the past from Firefox's memory?

  • Safari being REALLY slow or sometimes "Cannot find server"! HELP!

Right, i have the new 'Safari 4' but its being really slow.
When trying to load up webpages, it sometimes takes AGES to load a page, or sometimes it even comes up with the message 'Safari cannot find the server'.
I have 'LittleSnitch' installed so I can see when Safari is using the internet to either upload or download information and most of the time, Safari is sat there doing nothing and not downloading any information...
I have reset Safari to no avail!
    Why might this be happening?

    'Safari cannot find the server'
Generally refers to a DNS problem.
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.

  • What causes JBO-33001: Cannot find the configuration file /common/bc4j.xcfg

I know that the jbo exception message:
JBO-33001: Cannot find the configuration file /common/bc4j.xcfg
can be caused by several things including the file really not being there. But in my current case, I know it is there and can be found throgh the classpath, because I actually find it using Configuration.buildConfigurationFileNameFromClassPath and
Configuration.getConfiguration just before calling Configuration.createRootApplicationModule. Is there any way to turn on a diagnostic to find out what is really wrong?
I would also like to request an enhancement to give meaningful messages in the jbo exception.
    Roger

This is on jdev 903 with patch running a local application attempting to connect to standalone OC4J 903. I think the error occurs before there is ever any attempt to make the connection to OC4J. Having one big catch-all exception for everything that can go wrong in creating the AM is pretty poor. I know in the past I have done manual editing of bc4j.xcfg and XML sentax errors cause exactly the same exception as not having the file at all. That is why I would at least like a list of all the causes behind the exception so I can go through and check them all.
    Thanks,
    Roger

  • Very slow performance; external boot drive the cause?

    Greetings.
I bought a 500 GB Hitachi drive for my iMac intending to install it myself. But, alas, I have an iSight iMac and I think it's beyond my ability to do the job. A Mac dealer nearby can do it for me, but wants the computer for two or three days, even thought the installation takes about an hour. They will not make an appointment for me to come in with it and wait.
So I installed it the drive in an OWC Mercury Elite case, cloned the original drive, and have been booting from the Hitachi via Firewire 400. Just about everything is running at well under previous speeds. Lightroom now takes as much as two to five minutes to spool a large file for printing and sometimes does not even send the file to the printer (in fairness, the latter issue happened sometimes with the internal drive – I wrote about it here before – but at least it didn't take a long time to spool the file, which has to happen each time I click "print" until at last it actually goes to the printer).
I'm getting slow performance from Safari (4.1.3), Mail (2.1.3), Lighroom 2, Photoshop (CS3). I can't say I've noticed problems elsewhere, but I rarely use other applications.
I have done all the usual maintenance tasks, besides those the computer does automatically. Repaired permissions. Emptied caches. Burned sage. Etc.
If this is the inevitable result of running from an external disk, then I'll have to brave the installation or pay someone to do it (which I would do immediately if I knew someone who would do it "while-u-wait").
If, however, this sounds like booting from the external drive should not be the problem, and there is something I might do to speed things up, I'd be grateful for your suggestions.
    As always, thank you.
    Leonard B.

Too bad about the site redesign. I had a draft of this message started, then got busy. Now I have no idea where to look for it. (And what happened to the Preview function?)
ANYWAY…  I talked to a tech person at Other World Computing about the problem. He was of the opinion that the iMac SHOULD be showing some slower response if booted from the external drive, but that maybe the sluggishness in this case was excessive. He had me run a hardware scan to see whether there were any bad blocks. After 24 hours, Speed Tools reported no problems. So now I have run every diagnostic and repair tool I know of and every one that was suggested (every one that I own, that is), and the computer is still hesitating so much that I just have to get up and walk away from it sometimes in order to stay sane.
I am booting from the original hard drive when I have to do extended internet research (Safari being the biggest speed offender), but run the iMac from the external drive when I have to do photo editing, since all my preferences, Lightroom libraries, etc., are located there. If I had the time to figure out just where the essential, and relevant, system and application files are located, I suppose that I could copy them and move them onto the internal drive. Then I could just use the external for storage of the image files (can't do that on the internal; there's not enough space). However, if what is going on (slowness issue) is indicative of a faulty drive, I'd rather not use it at all, even as a storage or backup drive.
Any thoughts? Do you suppose this might be a problem with the computer, not with the new drive? I'd hate to ask OWC to exchange it (even if they would do that) and then find out I've got the same trouble.
    Thanks again in advance.
    Leonard

I have just upgraded to Maverick and now I cannot find certain JPG 's . These files do exist however I can find them manually . I rely on the search facility and this is slowing me down, I am having to trawl through stuff to find the file I want , before I would put in part of the title and the machine would find it.
