Slow performance disk activity

My mac has slowed to almost a stop.
I hear lots of disk activity and when reviewing activity monitor I see lots of disk activity.
About 100 reads and writes a second
Any ideas of how to find out what is happening?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Slow performance on activating BW elements

    Hi all.
We have very slow performance in our BW system when activating infoObjects, infoCubes, tranformations... Problems are centered in db access to table D010TAB, D010INC...
We followed recomendations as in note 1232776      Long runtimes for accesses to D010INC or D010TAB, but we do not get any performance improvement.
Table D010TAB has more than 20 million rows. Is there any way to reduce this table size?
    Thank you in advance.
    Best regards,
    Nacho

    Thanks Suman.
We already built indexes but it does not improve system performance.
Indexes on D010TAB are bigger than the database table.
    Best regards,
    Nacho

  • Slow imac - too much disk activity

My wife's iMac is booting and running very slow. It takes close to 4 minutes for the boot process to complete. Once logged in applications start slow, run slow, and take forever to exit. Sometimes when quitting an application the application window will disappear but the menu bar will stay present with the Application pulldown name highlighted. The iMac at that point is locked up and the power button has to be used to shut it down.
    What happened prior to this?
From what I can tell, a few days ago, while using Mail, it would crash. Then the iMac started booting slowly and running slowly. I am not sure which happened first. Yesterday, when running Mail a dialog box appeared stating that no accounts existed on the iMac. I recreated her account. However, it still booted slowly and continued to run slowly.
    What I have tried:
I have used Cocktail to clear out DS Store, Cache files, and Repair Privileges. Cocktail hangs after running the Repair Privileges for about 2 minutes.
I have used Mac Scan 2 to search for possible ad/spy ware - it hangs when running.
I have booted from the 10.3 Installation CD and used Disk Utility to try to Repair Privileges. I was able to do that but had to run it several times before there were no more improper permissions assigned.
I have used Mac Janitor to run the 3 maintenance routines, Daily, Weekly, and Monthly. Daily ran fine. Monthly ran file. Weekly always hangs after running for about 2 minutes.
I have used TechTools and ran all tests available twice - all hardware passed both times.
I have used Terminal and run plutil on System and User preference files. No errors were reported.
I have disconnected all USB and Firewire devices. Only the keyboard and mouse that came with the iMac are connected to the iMac.
There also appears to be some type of disk activity always going on. It always has the same pattern:
    click, click..........click
    click, click..........click
    click, click...click, click, click, click
    click, click..........click
    click, click..........click
    click, click...click, click, click, click
I'm not saying the pattern is important, but the fact that it is consistent maybe.
Even at startup, as soon as the Apple logo appears, the same disk activity pattern can be heard.
Login was set to automatically login my wife. I changed that to require username and password. No change. Her account has admin privileges.
I then created a new administrator account and used it. The same slowness and disk activity results.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. The only thing I can think of to try at this point is to reinstall the operating system.
    Sincerely,
    Steve
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   400MHz 512MB Memory

Right off the bat you need a much larger hard drive. Not nearly large enough and you don't have much free space left.
Re-read my previous suggestion. Don't run "Verify Disk", run "Repair Disk."
Without the SMART status you cannot tell if the drive noises indicate a failing drive, but inasmuch as you need at least a 30 or 40 GB drive I'd suggest replacing the drive.
You can also do some maintenance.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Slow performance on Intel Mac a damaged disk?

    Hi,
I'm experiencing very slow performance on my Intel Mac 216 Ghz core duo, with 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Running OS 10.6.8. Have been experiencing reduced performance, can't use Entourage email or Chrome, Firefox browsers at the same time. Ran Utilities to repair permissions, only a Java set of issues. Disk Utilities found no problems with the disk.  Have experienced this issue increasingly for 5-6 months. Using Activity Window i see that Entourage, Word, Safari, Chrome, even System Preferences pane sometimes "Is not responding". Other system services take longer than before.
Apple support had me get larger RAM chip. Now have 2GB Ram. Upgraded to OS 10.6.8 with no improvement. Ran Software Update several times.
I have no anti virus software, have disabled Spotlight and any other memory demanding software. I'm on a in-home wi-fi network on an Airport Extreme.
In addition, at startup it takes 15+ seconds for the keyboard (wired) typing to show in the log on field. Running a single account with Admin access. Screen refreshes slow at times. Currently running is Safe Boot mode but that's not helping much.
Read on this board discussion 23238910 to use Terminal Window to do a syslog comand. The results in the Text Edit reads

It does not sound good for your disk drive.
I suggest you backup everything to an external disk drive ASAP.

  • JPDA debug slow, CPU low, no disk activity

I tried to debug using JPDA with a Tomcat 4.0.3 target container. If I am very patient it finally connects after some good minutes. After that it debugs, even if rather slow.
However, during those minutes nothing seems to happen. CPU is low (under 5%), and there is no disk activity.
    JDK is 1.3.1_02, W95 (yes, still), 256M.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,
    Florin

JDK is 1.3.1_02, W95 (yes, still), 256M.JPDA is really slow in Hotspot/Classic before JDK 1.4 (it's interpreting all the bytecode vs. running it natively). Try using classic if it's available instead of hotspot, it seems to be a bit faster at debugging.
Also, if you can, try JDK 1.4. It's JVM is MUCH faster at debugging than 1.3 is.
    Hope this helps,

  • Recent upgrade, slow performance, shown in Activity Monitor

I have been experiencing gradually slowing performance in the last couple of weeks, the only thing I have done a couple months ago is upgrade to Leopard, though the timing does not indicate it's this precisely.
It is most noticeable in Safari and PS CS3 and Bridge, the programs I mostly use.
In Activity Monitor, when this occurs there are a couple of offending processes, and they are always hanging when the slowing phases happen. They say, in red:
    UserEventAgent (not responding)
    and/or
    coreaudioid (not responding)
Does anyone know what this might be? How I can correct whatever this is?
    thx

That thread indicates the cause points to various plug-ins primarily from Pro Tools. I do have PT installed, and I have now uninstalled it. We'll see if things improve. Otherwise I don't know how to isolate the cause, for example another random plug-in, so the thread was of limited value. Good start though, thanks.
Pro Tools LE 7.x is apparently not yet compatible with Leopard, joy.

  • CS5 or Pc  Slow performance?

Hi there,I have a problem with my pc at work and because I am not quite sure in which one is exactly the problem I decide to ask you.The pc is intel pentium 4 with 3 Gb Ram  XP professional service pack 3 Photoshop CS 5.
The pc is connected to server(data base). When I open a bunch of photos (20-30) approximately 8 - 12 MB each one and sometimes I experience a slow performance(for example I am trying to retouch/clone something and it takes a lot of time for the pc to redraw/respond) the interesting part is that it doesn't happen always(sometimes can be even 3 photos and it will take ages to do something) also I notice that after appr. 20 minutes it's suddenly start to work as it should normally(it's like there was an update and when is updated/complete everything is fine). When that start to happen today I restart CS5 and load the same photos and it work fine, so it is really bizarre for me.I put a 89% ram usage to the CS5(I pretty much use only all the time Photoshop and bridge )   also made the history steps to 7 and the cache to 6 for big and flat files.I was checking the Efficiency and it's all the time 100 % so it's like it's not the photoshop but like I said today i just restard the ps and upload the same photos and got fix...I tried to copy the photos on my hard drive(so it should not be affect of the performance of the server but still the same as when I take them straight from the server.Because the hard drive is only 80 gb ( I don't store anything there )   i did clean up and disk defragment still  the same situation.Do you know what can be the problem and is it the Photoshop or the Pc?I'll appreciate it.
    Thank you

Could be that your PC is sometimes looking to check things on the server, and maybe the server or network is busy/bogged down and you PC gets caught in that cycle mess.....so,
suggest next time you use Ps, set win performance monitor perfmon.exe or perfmon.msc ; setup to view graph of disk use and network activity and cpu usage.....then you may see/track a problem area.
on win7, task manager does most of the same stuff

  • Computer unresponsive with disk activity, even when disk is USB

    Hi,
I've always had issues with responsiveness with Linux when there is disk activity (several distro's, same hardware), whereas a Windows XP installation reacts very snappily. When I have a torrent client open, Mplayer keeps hanging a few times a minute (even more often when the download is going fast (2 MB/s)).
Recently I migrated to ext4 in the hopes that would fix it, but it didn't. It's also not something as simple as a DMA issue (because it's SATA). Disk throughput is about 80 MB/s, which is OK.
Anyway, currently, I'm performing this on a USB disk:
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc1 bs=10M
And even then the computer is almost unusable, which it shouldn't be, because the internal disks are not used for this. And some time back when I was copying an AVI to a USB stick, it was utterly unusable.
Maybe it's a driver issue, because I can't imagine the normal schedulers being so horrible, but I can't say.
My disk controller can't be accessed with AHCI (there is no 'native' option in the BIOS), yet NCQ is enabled:
    # dmesg|grep -i ncq
    [ 1.313605] ata3.00: 2930275055 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32)
    [ 1.800338] ata4.00: 2930277168 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32)
    [ 2.324738] ata6.00: 488395055 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32)
I have kernel 3.1.1-1-ARCH, so I should have the 'wonder patch'.
    Hardware:
    CPU: Athlon X2 3800+ (2GHz dual core).
    RAM: 2 GB DDR400 RAM.
    Chipset: Nvidia nForce 4 ultra.
Disks (in MD RAID1): 2 WDC WD15EARS-00Z5B1 (disks have changed over the years) and 1 Seagate disk (which contains windows and is spun down in Linux, to prevent noise).
I disabled the (self-destructing) head parking feature of the caviar green disks with WDidle by setting the timeout to max (disabling the head parking with WDidle actually lets it trigger constantly, that's why I chose this way).

Anybody know what might be causing this?

I recently tried to play around with the schedulers and I found out that using "deadline" for my internal drives, "cfq"  for my optical drive and "noop" for everything else. I tried copying a load of small files on my USB flashdrive while playing a movie from the optical drive and the system felt very responsive.
I've been playing some more, and you're right in that it seems that with the internal disks at deadline, the system is a lot more responsive. Previously, I put the external disk I was zeroing at deadline too, but that (I know now) made it worse again.
I run a 3.2-rc5 kernel which seems to help considerably though.
Has there been any specific change in that kernel to cause that?
BTW, I noticed that the NCQ queue on your drives is of 0 length, try setting it o 31 like this (as root).
I always wondered about the NCQ queue. In pages about NCQ that I found, the dmesg also reported a queue of 0. I just always figured it meant how many commands it currently had, being zero at boot time.
When I do "cat /sys/block/sda/device/queue_depth" it always says one, regardless of disk activity.

  • Sudden extreme slow performance

I have run Tiger on this machine for about 6 months with no problems. In the last few weeks everything has started slowing down noticably. The hard disk is running ragged, constantly reading/writing, from looking at the cpu monitor it seems like the computer is not actually using it's ram and is just reading and writing. I tried clearing caches and that worked for a few hours but the machine now seems to lock up after a few hours use. I get to the point where i cannot open menus, switch programs, or even force quit or restart. Everything locks up - spinning beachball - and the hard disk is left constantly writing. I have 9 -15Gb free out of 40Gb on the disk - i assume this is enough. Playing music and safari is no problem. But I am using iphoto and photoshop as well as other programs in the background. This was never previously a problem and ran smoothly. I know it's fairly vague but if anyone can help..

    Hi, Ben.
Thanks. However, it would help to see some of the specific data points from the instructions in those FAQs. Specifically:
    1. You wrote: "(the pageins/outs are about equal) but i'm getting REALLY slow performance across the board. "It still sounds like it is "thrashing."1.1. Did you check the pagesin/pageouts per second as described in my "Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space" FAQ? The per-second values can only be found using top as described therein.
1.2. Did you check for a runaway process in Activity Monitor per the "Troubleshooting" section in my "Tuning Mac OS X Performance" FAQ?.
The activity you describe (beach ball, heavy disk writing) has to be coming from somewhere, so checking Activity Monitor as I describe in that FAQ should tell you. Find the process consuming the most %CPU as instructed in the FAQ. Post back the result, i.e. the process name.2. You wrote: "It seems to lock itself up with the hard disk clicking and crunching. Is it possible the hard disk is giving up and so is writing at a very slow speed??? "To check this, see my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ:2.1. Perform at least Steps 1-3 of the Procedure section therein in the order specified.
2.2. Also, review the section therein on "Bad Sectors" to see if the "clicking and crunching" sounds you are hearing are similar to those that generally indicate bad sectors.3. If the disk checks out OK per point 2 above, and depending on what you find in point 1.2 above, the process may be an errant Startup or Login Item. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    Good luck!

    any suggestions?

ok, stopped syncing in System preferences and even (horror) deleted the file which reappeared in seconds.
now waiting to see if stopping the syncing helps - though computer is now working a bit better, the info on Activity Monitor would indicate it is not a real improvement

  • Slow performance after installation of new OS-X

I don't know if anyone else has been experiencing the same problem as me, but it seemed to occur after I installed the new OS-X.
My MacBook Pro has gone stremely slow and it seems to be related to MAIL. I thought that the standard MAIL program that comes with MAC was the problem, so I installed Postbox and that seemed to work for a while (1 day or 2) and then it was the same. It's not just email programs that are slow, but all programs.
Click and wait seconds (10, 20, 30 sec) just for a program to open. Moving between files is so slow. I feel like I'm using Windows again.
I'm no expert, but when I look at MEMORY usage, out of 4GB I'm using 3.8GB. My Virtual Memory is 4.76GB. See screen shot below.
I would apprecaite if anyone can help me resolve what the problem is.
    Thanks
    Richard Giuliano

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C.

  • Slow performance in browser and OS -- EtreCheck Included

Hello all, I'll keep this as short and detailed as possible.
I bought a Macbook Pro for my wife two years ago, but the machine has been very slow since I got it for her.  I've always been a Windows guy myself and am very familiar with troubleshooting in a Windows environment.  I have almost no experience with OSX, however, and have no idea which applications would be needed for troubleshooting, etc.
As my wife describes the issue, the OS itself is very slow.  She opens the laptop and a full twelve minutes pass before the system is fully responsive.  She has to keep pressing the power button for anything to work.  The screen will be greyed out and a loading bar will appear at the bottom.  It takes so long to load that the system falls asleep and she has to restart multiple times.
I have noted that the browser is also slow.  My wife uses Safari almost all the time.  I installed Chrome to see how a fresh browser install would perform in OSX, and the speed was very slow as well.  An internet speed test at speedtest.net results in:
    Ping - 47ms
    Down Speed - 5.96 Mbps
    Up Speed - .89 Mbps
Included below is the result from an Etrecheck run

If the machine has always taken 12 minutes to start up, since it came out of the box, then it was and is defective. There's nothing to do in that case but to take it in for service.

  • My Mac has been suffering a slow performance, lagging and often froze. One source recommends using Onyx. Is that a trustable source?

I have a Macbook Pro OS X Version 10.9.4. Processor speed of 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, memory of 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 and storage capacity of 203.51 GB out of 319.21 GB. I have been experiencing very slow performance and sometimes the screen will froze. The spinning wheel is very common and long. I have try to delete as many things as i could from my computer, restarting it but to no avail. One source suggests me to use Onyx. Would that help to solve my problem?

  • MacBook Pro Slow Performance, Difficulty Multitasking

Hello, everyone.  Thanks in advance for any help.
I have a mid-2012 Intel MacBook Pro that is very important to me.  Typically, I'll have a couple of Safari windows, Mail, Evernote, Excel, Word, Calendar, Contacts, and Acrobat running at the same time on 3-4 desktops.  This has been typical of my usage since I bought the computer.
For the last few months, I've noticed that it is having difficulty switching between these tasks.  The gestures to switch the task on the display work fine, but I often get the working ball icon for a significant time before I can continue work in the new application.  This sometimes lasts up to a minute, but is usually 10 seconds or so.  I haven't noticed that a particular application causes this more than any other, and since I first noticed it, I've installed 2 or 3 different OS versions.  I also ran an AHT with no results.
Anyway, since I can't point to anything other than my perception of slower performance, I figured I'd post my EtreCheck results to fish for suggestions.  Does anything below look out of whack?  Any suggestions for changes to improve performance?
    Thanks,
    Jake

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
