Slow performance during CD-import in iTunes -- 2. GHz iMac

This folowing is the text of a feedback I have sent to Apple.
Something doesn't quite seem right.
Yesterday I had problems trying to rip to Apple lossless format.
Initially the discs started off ripping at around 5~8x and then maxed out at about 14x. This wasn't concerning me particularly as I don't do much ripping and the speeds concerned had never really concerned me before. But then they started hanging near the end of certain tracks. This seems to be an unrelated issue. The discs were old, dirty and scratched and I can only assume the SuperDrive was being overly sensitive.
Anyway that's when I tried the same discs on my 1.3GHz G4 iBook. The ibook started the discs off at around 9~10x and maxed out at 20~24x at the end of the disc. The iBooks combo drive did not hang on any tracks like the iMac.
I know that this was not a particularly objective observation so today I did some tests. Again they are not entirely objective and were not done with specialised software.
I ripped a identical commercial CD to Apple Lossless and 128 kbps AAC on both my iBook and iMac.
The following are the averages (or increases) that I observed in iTunes (7.3.2 (6)) for the first and last tracks. As you may well know the average encode speed for each track increases until the machine reaches its maximum encode speed and it then proceeds to encode the rest of the tracks at that speed.
iBook Apple Lossless: 6~10x -> 26~27x (1st track -> 12th track)
iMac Apple lossless: 6.5~9.5x -> 21x (1st track -> 12th track)
iBook AAC: 10x -> 11.5x (1st track -> 12th track)
iMac AAC: 6.5~9x -> 21x (1st track -> 12th track)
Both Macs were running OS X 10.4.10. The iMac had 2GB RAM and the iBook 1GB RAM and neither had any other applications open.
The iMac clearly maxes out higher than the less grunty iBook on the AAC tracks which makes sense as there is more encoding involved but why is it effectively only achieving 80% the speed of a two year old G4 iBook on the Apple Lossless encoding?
Another user posted similar comments re a MacBook in July:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5024487#5024487
Any ideas?
Josh

No scrached disks (some of them brand new), and I tried about eight or nine and all were equally slow.
Regarding read speed: The internal DVD-drive (Pioneer 106D) on my four-year old Dual G5 has a read speed of 32X for audio disks, but are those 8X enough to explain the more than 50% better rip speed?
The G5's got faster disks, though, so maybe that is an issue?

  • NVIdia Powermizer on Laptops - Slow Performance during gaming

    Hope this is the place for this post...
    I'm currently running nvidia 180.29 and I have the following set in my xorg.conf file:
    Option "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x1; PerfLevelSrc=0x2222; PowerMizerDefault=0x3; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x3"
    The problem I see occurring is that; during gaming the performance level will move from what I have it set to above (Level 2) and dropping to a lower level performance.  This; of course, causes a HUGE drop in frames while gaming.  I've tried EVERYTHING I researched but nothing seems to make this sticky.
    I have tried:
    1.  Adding options to /etc/modprobe.conf (Setting nvidia stuff I found googl'ing around)
    2.  The above options added to my device sections of my xorg.conf file
    3.  Running this script that some said would keep it sticky:
    while true; do
    powerstate=`cat /proc/acpi/ac_adapter/AC/state | awk '{print $2}'`
    if [ $powerstate = "on-line" ]; then
    nvidia-settings -q all > /dev/null
    fi
    sleep 25;
    done
    All attempts have failed and my performance is HORRIBLE as long as the game is running.  When the game quits the performance returns.
    Any suggestions, information, links..etc would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance...
    EDIT:  See alot of people complaining about 180.29 and powermizer.....does anyone know if it's broken??  If it is...can someone post a quick link to how to downgrade?

    You can try to install some older drivers from http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html find the driver for your PC, select archiver, run the script... Should work.

  • Slow Performance During Folder Selection in Miggui

    I am trying to migrate some 30,000 folders from an NSS volume on NW 6.5 SP5 server to an NSS volume on a server running OES2 SP3 on SLES 10 SP4.
    Using the miggui from the OES server, I can authenticate to both servers, and select File System as the service to be migrated. Both servers show up in the list and I can expand the folders and select what I want to migrate. Now here's where I'm getting stuck: I select a subset (say 1,000 folders) and drag them to the destination. Once I let go the mouse, it sits there for hours. If I look at the target destination, a folder appears once every few minutes. What did I forget to turn on/configure in order to get this to speed up???
    I saw a message that said to increase the cache values for the TSA on the source. I tried that and it didn't help. However, I'm assuming that the TSA only gets used when you actually migrate the data and not during the pre-copy checks.
    Any help is appreciated!

    $(UI tried with 10k folders drag-drop on the target and it took approximately 20 minutes to show it on the Target Server folder tree. I haven't tried it with 30k folders yet.
    All you have to do is select the folder range on the source server and drop exactly on the target volume/folder. You can tailf /var/opt/novell/migration/<my_project>/log/debug.log and notice the messages like:
    '<time_stamp> DEBUG - Path of folder selected /NSS Volumes/VOL1', running for every folder created on target.
    If you see message in debug.log as 'Drag and drop in progress: java.awt.dnd.InvalidDnDOperationException: Drag and drop in progress', means either the drop on the target is not accurate or off the tree.

  • Slow performance during Apply Request Values Phase of JSF lifecycle

    Dear all,
    I found that my application is sucked at the Apply Request Values Phase of JSF lifecycle when I submit the page. (Totally spend 1 min to pass this phase)
    In the application, there is around 300 input fields in the page. Who know how can I ehance the performace?
    Thanks.

    Thanks a lot for your help. Maybe I explain more about my current structure
    I need to develop a input form for course instructor to input students' assignment / examination result (max 9 assignments and 1 examination).
    so that I have below coding:
    *1. bean to store marks of a student*
    public class Mark {
    private String studentID = "";
    private String mark1 = "";
    private String mark9 = "";
    private String markExam = "";
    //getter & setter of above properties
    public void setMark1(String mark1) {
    this.mark1 = mark1;
    public String getMark1() {
    return this.mark1;
    *2. backing bean*
    public class markHandler {
    ArrayList<Mark> marks = new ArrayList<Mark>();
    //getter & setter of above property
    //method to retrieve list of student (this will be the action before go in mark input page)
    public void getStudentList() {
    //get student list from database
    for(int i = 0 ; i < studentCount; i++){
    //initial mark of student
    Mark mark = new Mark();
    mark.setStudentID(studentID);
    mark.setMark1("");
    mark.setMarkExam("");
    //put into arraylist
    marks.add(mark);
    *3. mark input page*
    <html>
    <h:dataTable value="#{markHandler.marks}" var="e">
    <column>
    <h:output value="#{e.studentID}" />
    </column>
    <column>
    <h:input id="mark1" value="#{e.mark1}" />
    </column>
    <column>
    <h:input id="mark1" value="#{e.markExam}" />
    </column>
    </h:dataTable>
    <h:commandButton action="#{markHandler.save} />
    </html>
    When I submit the page, It seems that there is a long time spent at the input field of datatable at Apply Request Values Phase. (I use Phase Listeners to test the time difference before & after phase)
    Pls help. Thanks.

  • Importing purchased iTunes into new iMac home computer

    My son had a lot of purchased iTunes songs and videos on his iTouch. We recently moved and are now using a new iMac. His purchases were through our iTunes account, and the iTunes library that he was syncing with was on a laptop that we no longer have. How can I get access to those purchased iTunes songs and videos so I can transfer them into my new iMac?

    When I called and spoke to an Apple service technician he told me that there is one re-grant per account per lifetime.
    Apple is usually pretty good about it but it's the exception and not the rule. The -> iTunes Store Terms of Service specifically states...
    "10. Purchase or Rental of Apple Content
    a. Products Requirements. You acknowledge that use of Products may require the use of other hardware and software products (e.g., the ability to make copies of Products on physical media and render performance of Products on authorized digital player devices), and that such hardware and software is your responsibility. Products may only be downloaded once; after being downloaded, they cannot be replaced if lost for any reason. Once a Product is purchased or rented (as applicable) and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage."
    We would like to request this one-time "re-grant"
    Then send an email to the link that Niel posted above but don't look for something about a one-time "re-grant".
    Explain what happened and that you did not have your items backed up.
    Then make sure you backup the items after you downlaod them.

  • Is this slow performance when importing CD's into iTunes ?

    Hi,
    My new iMac 20" arrived this weekend. Since then I've been getting acquainted, being new to Macs. I wanted to build up my iTunes library, so I grabbed a box of my CDs and began importing them one by one. I was expecting my new iMac to really fly through them after reading the reviews of how much faster the new Core 2 Duo are over previous iMacs. I remember a table of stats in the MacWorld reviews, and for iTunes test, these machines were clocked at under 2 minutes for whatever it was they ripped in iTunes. YMMV certainly applies, but I was setting my expectation that my iMac could rip a CD in 2 - 3 minutes.
    Umm, my experience is way off that. In fact, I would say my iMac took about as long to rip a CD as my 7 year old Dell PC with 256 MB of mem and a first gen Pent 5.
    I decided to pick a CD and time how long it takes to import on my iMac, then take same CD and time how long it takes to import into iTunes on his new PC.
    CD - Rush, Moving Pictures, 7 songs, 39.8 min, 403.1 MB
    Encoding - AAC, 192 kbps
    My rig - iMac 20", 2 GB RAM, 256 MB VRAM, Core 2 Duo and 250 HB with latest version of OS X
    My son's rig - intel D955xbklkr socket 775 atx mobo, intel pentium D840 3.2 GHz processor, Corsair twinx pc5400 DDR2 667 Mhz mem ( 2 x 1024 mb ), HD - Seagate 250 GB SATA2 7K with 16 MB buffer, Pioneer DVR-111D DVD burner, and XFX 7600GS extreme graphics card, Win XP Pro, SP2 ( we built this beast with gaming in mind, with his own money ) * the CPU and memory are NOT overclocked and no other tweaks. just build it, install it and run it.
    The results:
    iMac - 7 minutes
    PC - 2 minutes
    I ran the import twice on each machine and came up with the same results.
    Neither machine was running anything else at the time.
    Granted there are some differences between the machines that should account for some differences, especially on the hard drive, with SATA2 and a nice 16 MB cache ( it's one sweet HD ) on the PC, but this difference is huge. We're not talking 20, 40 or 60 % faster on the PC. This was > 3x faster, so basically over 300% faster.
    Anyone have an idea ? Without digging into the specs, I'd say the DVD drives should be able to read equally fast, the Core 2 Duo 2.1 GHz with 4 MB cache should be equal if not superior to the older, D 820 3.2 GHz, the memory is the same speed, but I'm not sure about system bus speed on the P C ( 800 MHz ? ). Graphics cards don't factor into this equation, but the HD probably plays a big role, and I think the Seagate in my son's PC has the iMac beat hands down.
    What are other iMac C2D owners seeing for average import times ?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Trevor,
    When you say your superdrive rips, the import speeds are typically around 20x, what encoding method and bit rate are you using ?
    I imported another CD and watched for what import speed numbers were displayed. Routinely, they hovered around 8x and sometimes up to 12 or 13x, but never higher. I was told by someone at our local user's group meeting that ripping at AAC 192kbps was a double-pass, I think that was the words they used, and therefore slower. ( Many members thought 7 minutes to rip was typical ) I'm not so sure if that means the drive will only spin at half it's rated max speed ? Anyway, I walked over to my son's PC with the CD and ripped it at AAC 192kbps to his iTunes library. The numbers I saw were from 18x to frequently 23, 24 and sometimes briefly to about 26x. His drive has a max of 40x. By my reasoning, anything that would cause iTunes to rip this CD at a slower speed, whether due to the encoding rate or the CD's surface condition, should affect both computers equally, yes ? Yet the drive on the PC performed on average at twice the rate of the iMac. I think it's safe to say the rip speed is comfortably within the operating margins of both drives.
    I'm not yet fully convinced this is normal for an iMac. My CD are in excellent shape. I'm the only one who uses them and I handle them with about as much care as the old audiofiles used to when they handled their vinyl LPs ( well, at least not as far as wearing cotton gloves and sweeping the dust off ). Most of them have absolutely no visible scratches or oily finger prints on their surfaces. I might experiment and see what rates I get if I use MP3 or a lower bit rate for AAC.

  • Lightroom 5.5 Import from Catalog *very* slow performance.

    Importing from a second catalog from a shoot is *very* slow with the last version or couple of versions of Lightroom.  It's been about 20 minutes and the import is moving glacially slow and is only about 20% done.
    Here are as many stats as I have:
    iMac 27" 3.5Ghz Core i7, 32G of ram, 3T fusion drive (the late 2013 model maxed out)
    Master catalog has 117,000 images in it.
    The catalog I'm importing has 948 images in it.
    CPU use during the import is 100% used by lightroom (note that the multiple CPUs can go to more than 100% so this means I think that one CPU is maxed out, though LR can sometimes take 500% of my CPUs during an export)
    Lightroom is using 4.2G of RAM (10G free in activity monitor)
    Hard drive is fairly full, but still has 366G free on it (so about 10%)
    Lightroom Mobile sync is enabled (not on this folder I don't think) but says "service unavailable" at this point.
    Lightroom is fully up to date (5.5) on both iMac and laptop (also a mac in case that matters).  Both are up to date with the latest OS software.
    How I did it was:
    Export the shoot as a new catalog on my iMac
    Transfer it to my laptop (smart previews only, no masters)
    Edit images, metadata, etc
    Transfer the entire folder back (.lrcat, previews, smart previews) to iMac
    In my master catalog do an import from catalog
    Waited for ages for checking for dupes (which I can understand with such a big catalog)
    Selected to import all, changing metadata and develop edits, and selecting to put new images in the folder (not sure why it asked as there weren't any new images)
    The last time I did an import I started it and then went out somewhere so I didn't notice how long it took, but this seems completely crazy.  In the time it's taken to write this up it's now about 20 minutes later and the progress bar is maybe at the 33% range.  It's still working away, it's just crazy crazy slow.
    Anything to help out or debug would be greatly appreciated.  I suspect it's pure size of the catalog, but 120k isn't outside the realm of what I've heard people say works fine, or maybe the Fusion drive (maybe the OS is trying to move files around behind the scenes)?
    Either way this didn't seem to be an issue until the last couple of versions (I haven't gone and re-installed 5.4 or 5.3 to check) and it's starting to really frustrate me

    Hi Jim,
    Great suggestion! It opens perfectly fine on its own. I even went as far as re-exporting it once it loaded but am still experiencing the same issue. That same catalog loads perfectly fine on my assistant's iMac.
    I can't really think about anything that changed in my environment with the exception of a new Bootcamp partition to run windows on an external Thunderbolt HD but I doubt this is related.
    I'm open to any suggestions while I am trying this again... 10 minutes of 'Checking for changed and duplicate photos'.

  • ITunes 10.1 (64-bit) slow performance

    Hello all,
    I have recently bought a new pc, a very fast machine (see details below), but I'm experiencing bad performance with iTunes 10.1 (64-bit) for windows.
    I don't have a lot of stuff in iTunes, I have about 120 apps, 500 songs, 1200 photos, couple of ringtones and 0 videos in my library. The whole iTunes interface responds slowly. Like clicking on Music, Videos, my iPhone in the side menu makes iTunes freeze for a couple of seconds and then switches to the screen. Even after loading a screen iTunes is freezed for a seconds before it's responsive.
    I've googled around for a while, and got some tips to disable some options in the preference window, so I've set all unnecessary things off, like: crossfadings songs, automatic update checking, looking for devices, automatic organizing, ping, genius, shared libraries, etc. but it doesn't speed up iTunes much.
    It gets even worse whenever I connect my iPhone 3G (Fw 4.2.1, 16GB, Black). iTunes simply freezes for like half a minute and the pc makes a few beeping noises because of connecting an usb-device. Even Windows 7 slows down a lot while connecting. iTunes gets responsive once my iPhone appears under devices in the side menu.
    Software I have constantly running in the backround are: AVG anti-virus free edition, SQL Server 2008, Steam and Skype. Turning off these softwares doesn't make a difference as well. There are no virusses or whatever on my pc. I let AVG anti-virus do a complete scan like once a week.
    Taskmanager shows iTunes using about 240,000K of memory, followed by steam with 70,000k of memory and skype with 30,000k of memory.
    Anyone else experiencing slow performance or know how to resolve this ?
    System details:
    Windows 7 64-bit
    Intel i7 950 @ 3.06GHz quad core processor
    6gigs of ddr3 (1600mhz) memory
    Ocz vertex2 ssd (The O/S and all music, photos, apps are on this disk)
    nvidia graphics card gtx460

    Same with me! I recently bought a new laptop, and iTunes 9 was working just fine. It takes like 5 seconds to scroll down one line. Clicking on different tabs and things takes forever as well. I am not sure what is causing it yet, but like you, I have disabled all sorts of iTunes settings which has not helped yet. Hopefully Apple will fix this problem soon! Let me know if you find a way to solve this.
    My PC Specs which are well above the minimum requirements:
    Asus UL80Jt
    Windows 7 64-Bit
    Intel i3 330UM Dual Core Processor @ 1.2GHz (ASUS Overclocking to 1.7 GHz)
    4GB RAM
    1.3 GB Dedicated Video RAM

  • How to fix iTunes extremely laggy/slow performance?

    Hi, does anybody know of a way to fix iTunes' extremely slow performance?
    Just about every action in iTunes takes ages to perform. Below are two YouTube movies demonstrating the problem.
    Examples:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGSQZ50GPa0
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDFHRejnA4A
    Thanks in advance,

    ps. iTunes used is the newest iTunes 8.0.1.11

    Definitely NOT a Windows only problem! It happens on my PowerBook G4 (I've even added more memory with no improvement - it's beginning to drive me mad!) It's specifically an iTunes 8 problem (iTunes 7 was absolutely fine for me - no problems at all). Unfortunately I can't reinstall iTunes 7 because I updated my iPhone firmware which then locked me into using iTunes 8...so essentially Apple locks you into using iTunes 8 even though it's crap and slow.

  • Slow Performance with large library (PC)

    I've been reading many posts about slow performance but didn't see anything addressing this issue:
    I have some 40000 photos in my catalog and despite generating previews for a group of directories, LR still is very slow in scrolling through the pics in these directories.
    When I take 2000 of these pics and import them into a new catalog - again generating previews, the scroll through the pics happens much much faster.
    So is there some upper limit of recommended catalog size for acceptable performance?
    Do I need to split my pics up by year? Seems counter productive, but the only way to see the pics at an acceptable speed.

    I also have serious performance issues, and i don´t even have a large database catalog, only around 2.000 pictures, the db file itself is only 75 mb big. Done optimization - didn´t help. What i encountered is that the cpu usage of LR 1.1 goes up and STAYS up around 85% for 4-5 minutes after programm start - during that time, zooming in to an image can take 2-3 minutes! After 4-5 minutes, cpu usage drops to 0%, the background task (whatever LR does during that time!) has finished and i can work very smoothly. preview generation cannot be the problem, since it also happens when i´m working in a folder that already has all previews build, close LR, and start again instantly. LR loads and AGAIN i´ll have to wait 4-5 minutes untill cpu ussage has dropped so i can continue working with my images smoothly.
    This is very annoying! I will stop using LR and go back to bridge/acr/ps, this is MUCH much faster. BUMMER!

  • MacBook Pro Slow Performance, Difficulty Multitasking

    Hello, everyone.  Thanks in advance for any help.
    I have a mid-2012 Intel MacBook Pro that is very important to me.  Typically, I'll have a couple of Safari windows, Mail, Evernote, Excel, Word, Calendar, Contacts, and Acrobat running at the same time on 3-4 desktops.  This has been typical of my usage since I bought the computer.
    For the last few months, I've noticed that it is having difficulty switching between these tasks.  The gestures to switch the task on the display work fine, but I often get the working ball icon for a significant time before I can continue work in the new application.  This sometimes lasts up to a minute, but is usually 10 seconds or so.  I haven't noticed that a particular application causes this more than any other, and since I first noticed it, I've installed 2 or 3 different OS versions.  I also ran an AHT with no results.
    Anyway, since I can't point to anything other than my perception of slower performance, I figured I'd post my EtreCheck results to fish for suggestions.  Does anything below look out of whack?  Any suggestions for changes to improve performance?
    Thanks,

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
    from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Slow performance-CS4, why?

    Hi,
    I have a Q9450 proccessor, Vista 64 bit with 4GB ram. ever since I installed CS4, things are going a bit slow in PPRO, and I don't understand why?
    For example, scrubbing or playback in the timeline have become painfully slow, and sometimes, I see leftovers of the marker, as if I don't have enough memory (it's hard to explain in writing... I hope
    you got it). Overall, all the symptoms shows I don't have enough memory, because of the slow performance, but it doesn't make sense, cause I have 4 GB, and in CS3 it all worked great.
    Any suggetsions?

    worked just great...
    I don't get it.
    I googled a bit and found this thread:
    http://dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=149929&page=4
    read what Dave Helmly at Adobe had to say (below):
    YES we use all Cores for playback , effects, and rendering for both Mac and Windows.
    I highly recommend switching to Vista 64 if you are a Windows user (Mac guys are OK with 10.5.4 or higher) Vista 64 will allow Production Premium CS4 to run using more than 4GB of Ram (XP/Vista32 Limitation). As with most NLEs, there are several programs running at the same time to give you the NLE experience. CS4 now allows each process to take up to 4Gb of RAM. If you have 16GB of RAM, then 4 processes can take up to 4GB each. This is a HUGE advantage over CS3. What are some examples of processes? DynamicLink, AfterServer, Photoshop Server, Adobe Media Encoder, Titler, Playback, Capture, Importer, and many more. I tell most people to count on buying 8GB minium.
    So maybe I have to add more ram, in order CS4 to run properly...
    Roy
