Slow Performance in Pages 4.0.3
Using Pages 4.0.3, I'm working on a rather lengthy document well over 50,000 words, 115 pages, plus graphics and counting. When using pages, performance becomes so poor that keystrokes, spell-check options, scrolling etc. and other functions have a noticeable delay. It's like i'm working in slow motion. Behavior is the same with or without the external display, with or without handful of USB peripherals, on LAN or off.
Performance monitor reveals Pages spiking to 102% to 105% CPU utilization during almost any activity. That sounds like safari's performance problem. Does Pages, too, have similar tricks to refresh it's performance?
Or is my document just too big for Pages?
Thanx -- JD
This is the problem working with actual graphics instead of links and a positional image.
But that's Pages!
As usual you will have to do some crazy time wasting work-around or put up with it.
A suggestion might be to have 2 images for each used in the document. A screen resolution version and a print resolution, then substitute the hi-res for the lo-res before final output.
Besides the time wasted on this mundane task that should be handled by the application, you have the inevitable need to repeatedly do this when every "final" turns out to need editing again. Also the inevitable mistakes made when you can't tell lo-res from hi-res at a glance on screen.
Again the Studio Manager in me comes up with another work around (Pages needs another menu for a "Work-Around Manager"). I would tint the lo-res images as a precaution against slipping through the manual editing.
On the other hand you could just switch to something that actually does the job, programmed by people who know what the job entails.

Any remedy for slow performance of Pages '09 on MacBook Air?
I love Pages '09 (except for the lack of a system for automatic numbering of figures and tables), but I have been struggling with it on my MacBook Air, which I have used as my travel computer for more than a year. On this trip (a month) Pages has started to perform very sluggishly. It's almost impossible to work with masks for inserted pdf graphs, typing is exceedingly slow, and so is saving the file. It's a first-generation MacBook Air with an 80GB hard drive, with a little more than 10 GB available.
I'll be home soon and have my MacBook Pro, but it's really affecting my performance in the field, so if there is a quick fix, I'd appreciate hearing about it.
Thanks, RickOpen activity monitor (in applications/utilities). Check system memory and note if you have page outs. If so, you don't have enough memory for what you are trying to do. If you can't raise your system's memory, then you should consider breaking your huge 100 page file into separate files. I suspect that is the issue here, the file is so big it can't be held in memory (fast) so it is swapped back and forth between memory and the hard disk (very slow). Thus the stutter.

Slow performance of discoverer portlets
Hi,
I am running into slow performance of a particular page in portal, there are multiple sites hosted on the portal but these all have static text and are very quick to load but the one page with discoverer portlets and a web-clippping portlet is taking ages. If I run these reports on their own they are instant. Has anyone had similar problems with 9.0.2 portal and the discoverer reports ? I tried to identify a particular report that may be the culprit by deleting them one by one and to no avail. After a few hours effort I found the design mode was hanging as well. Again, just for this 1 page.
There are 3 tabs on this page with about 4 report portlets and 1 web-clipping portlet.
Thanks for any help,
BrandonThanks for the help.
Seems to have been resolved although I'm not sure if thats the end of the story. Will wait and see.....
So far apparently a port conflict of some sort in the discoverer config was causing it to hang and then also other system demands on the network and server housing the discoverer end-user layer were also causing problems.
No error messages unfortunately...... -
Slow performance, weird memory usage, hanging when closing safari tab
Hi, i recently noticed that my MacBoo Pro was with low performance after some hours of use.
I'm a heavy user, so I try to monitor what might be causing it. What i note was:
After restart (or fresh start), my computer was ok;
I use applications like adobe Lightroom and VMWare Fusion;
Then I star feeling like Safari was too slow to open pages - I thought it was the internet link first, but even local webpages are slow. I notice that when a click to close a tab, it take almost 2 sec to do it. The same when click to open any link on that page.
I start the activity monitor, but my proc usage are low. Then, I notice the (weird) memory usage:
Take a look at "memory used". I closed all applications before take this screenshot. i've trying to identify what is consuming this memory, but.. no success.
Anyone has any idea what can might be causing it?
My HW information:
all my apps are updated.Memory usage was normal when you took that screenshot.
When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Slow performance-CS4, why?
Hi,
I have a Q9450 proccessor, Vista 64 bit with 4GB ram. ever since I installed CS4, things are going a bit slow in PPRO, and I don't understand why?
For example, scrubbing or playback in the timeline have become painfully slow, and sometimes, I see leftovers of the marker, as if I don't have enough memory (it's hard to explain in writing... I hope
you got it). Overall, all the symptoms shows I don't have enough memory, because of the slow performance, but it doesn't make sense, cause I have 4 GB, and in CS3 it all worked great.
Any suggetsions?worked just great...
I don't get it.
I googled a bit and found this thread:
http://dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=149929&page=4
read what Dave Helmly at Adobe had to say (below):
YES we use all Cores for playback , effects, and rendering for both Mac and Windows.
I highly recommend switching to Vista 64 if you are a Windows user (Mac guys are OK with 10.5.4 or higher) Vista 64 will allow Production Premium CS4 to run using more than 4GB of Ram (XP/Vista32 Limitation). As with most NLEs, there are several programs running at the same time to give you the NLE experience. CS4 now allows each process to take up to 4Gb of RAM. If you have 16GB of RAM, then 4 processes can take up to 4GB each. This is a HUGE advantage over CS3. What are some examples of processes? DynamicLink, AfterServer, Photoshop Server, Adobe Media Encoder, Titler, Playback, Capture, Importer, and many more. I tell most people to count on buying 8GB minium.
So maybe I have to add more ram, in order CS4 to run properly...

Bug report: Energy Manager causes slow performance...
Very slow Windows Startup..
Energy Manager's plans and the problem occured using any plan as I remember, and it wasn't an issue with the maximum processor state. I had heavy disk usage, especially access to the Page File, which is what the person in the second link I posted also described. CPU usage was low. The disk usage was seemingly not related to Energy Manager (Chrome was usually the worst), but removing Energy Manager completely resolved the problem. If you would find it helpful. I'm quite confident that even with Maximum Processor state at %100, CPU usage was low when it was slow, and that disk access was the culprit.
previously have use 1.0.0.31 or 32 not sure.
Windows 8.1
Im using Lenovo Energy Management Driver
1.0.0.28
4.6.2014I actually have the same problem. Sorry to work on a old thread, but...
I've got my Lenovo B50-70 less than 1 month ago, and had switched it to SSD and had set everything up and is working perfectly. However there are a bunch of lenovo programs that came pre-installed. This computer is used mainly for work and I really don't like programs that suddenly pop-up and ask you to do stuff, as it is quite distracting, and with Lenovo Energy Manager being one of them so I removed it. (I did do some research before I remove...)
Everything was fine, until when I try to switch on my wifi (I usually have it off, as I use LAN most of the time)... For the B50-70 there is a airplane button on F7, which allow the user to switch wifi and bluetooth on/off. That button was unresponsive... After some digging it is actually related to the power energy manager being removed. So I've downloaded the latest version from Lenovo and it was working again...
However though, whenever I start my computer it is taking so long to start... And I tried uninstalling the power energy manager and it solved the problem... And I am stuck with either having no wifi on/off ability or a really slow boot, which loses the whole purpose of the SSD. After you enter your username and password it originally takes around 5~10 seconds to login, now it takes over 1 minute.
I have found this other link, which says Lenovo Power Manager having the same problem.
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Bug-report-Power-Manager-causes-slow-performa...
There is a solution, which you can change the registry to switch a function off. I've tried it and it didn't work, which is not surprising as it's a different program.. But I am hoping that Lenovo can provide a similar solution for Lenovo Energy Manager... -
IPad AIR 2 - SAFARI Loading slow when scrolling pages
I'm having problems with my iPad AIR 2 with the slow loading web pages with scrolling up and down .
The problem looks like the video posted on YouTube , the video shot by me.
Sorry for my English.
LINK YouTube: https://youtu.be/jYudjQwk7soso I went to the Genius Bar today
the genius ran the usually diagnostic
she said I had a memory issue
she tried to blame it on some old backup restore
but I've never used one
i always start fresh on a new device manually (other than iCloud contacts and bookmarks)
well she wouldn't listen and insisted she restore the device yet again
((vie already done it 2x in the last week)
anyways things were fine for an hour
tthe problem is now back
i made another appointment for Monday
know for a fact this issue does not affect every iPad air 2
there are several in my family
i am beginning to think its an issue with low performing ram
ppossibly apple used two suppliers
i don't want to fail victim to conspiracy theories
but I am extremely ****** off and I will demand a new iPad on monday -

Slow performance after installation of new OS-X
I don't know if anyone else has been experiencing the same problem as me, but it seemed to occur after I installed the new OS-X.
My MacBook Pro has gone stremely slow and it seems to be related to MAIL. I thought that the standard MAIL program that comes with MAC was the problem, so I installed Postbox and that seemed to work for a while (1 day or 2) and then it was the same. It's not just email programs that are slow, but all programs.
Click and wait seconds (10, 20, 30 sec) just for a program to open. Moving between files is so slow. I feel like I'm using Windows again.
I'm no expert, but when I look at MEMORY usage, out of 4GB I'm using 3.8GB. My Virtual Memory is 4.76GB. See screen shot below.
I would apprecaite if anyone can help me resolve what the problem is.
Thanks
Richard GiulianoFirst, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long. -
Slow performance in browser and OS -- EtreCheck Included
Hello all, I'll keep this as short and detailed as possible.
I bought a Macbook Pro for my wife two years ago, but the machine has been very slow since I got it for her. I've always been a Windows guy myself and am very familiar with troubleshooting in a Windows environment. I have almost no experience with OSX, however, and have no idea which applications would be needed for troubleshooting, etc.
As my wife describes the issue, the OS itself is very slow. She opens the laptop and a full twelve minutes pass before the system is fully responsive. She has to keep pressing the power button for anything to work. The screen will be greyed out and a loading bar will appear at the bottom. It takes so long to load that the system falls asleep and she has to restart multiple times.
I have noted that the browser is also slow. My wife uses Safari almost all the time. I installed Chrome to see how a fresh browser install would perform in OSX, and the speed was very slow as well. An internet speed test at speedtest.net results in:
Ping - 47ms
Down Speed - 5.96 Mbps
Up Speed - .89 Mbps
Included below is the result from an Etrecheck run

How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
If you have anti virus software installed, that could be a factor.

Hello there I bought a new iPad air 32 4g model and I have been noticing slow performance when opening a pictures of an app in the AppStore
knowing that I didn't face this problem an iPad 2 also I have restore the iPad air and still the problem is thereI had a 3rd Generation iPad on iOS 7.0.4. It's what I sold to buy the Air. It was terrible. I mean if the criteria you are using is efficiency and speed in moving around and using the OS, then it was terrible.
Safari was sluggish in scrolling with basic pages, closing apps, opening new ones, the Music app would take 4 to 5 seconds to open with a small library of around 12 to 15 artists. Tapping on items would result in a delay leading you to thinking you missed it and hitting it again.
I think the criteria you are using is "Did it work", then yes. Did it work well? Certainly not. It was a bit like Windows on an Intel Celeron CPU. it worked but drove most of us mad with how poor it performed.

MacBook Pro Slow Performance, Difficulty Multitasking
Hello, everyone. Thanks in advance for any help.
I have a mid-2012 Intel MacBook Pro that is very important to me. Typically, I'll have a couple of Safari windows, Mail, Evernote, Excel, Word, Calendar, Contacts, and Acrobat running at the same time on 3-4 desktops. This has been typical of my usage since I bought the computer.
For the last few months, I've noticed that it is having difficulty switching between these tasks. The gestures to switch the task on the display work fine, but I often get the working ball icon for a significant time before I can continue work in the new application. This sometimes lasts up to a minute, but is usually 10 seconds or so. I haven't noticed that a particular application causes this more than any other, and since I first noticed it, I've installed 2 or 3 different OS versions. I also ran an AHT with no results.
Anyway, since I can't point to anything other than my perception of slower performance, I figured I'd post my EtreCheck results to fish for suggestions. Does anything below look out of whack? Any suggestions for changes to improve performance?
Thanks,
Jake

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Slow performance disk activity
My mac has slowed to almost a stop.
I hear lots of disk activity and when reviewing activity monitor I see lots of disk activity.
About 100 reads and writes a second
Any ideas of how to find out what is happening?First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C).
