Slow performance problem in CS6...
I have had this problem for a LONG time and I am finally just fed up with it. I have a file that has 4 artboards that are 768px X 640px in RGB mode. The file size is 3.7MB and has a few placed PSD and PNG files. If I try to do ANYTHING, it freezes for 5-10sec before it does anything, and sometimes doesn't do what I requested, something as simple as "Fit Artboard in Window" will lock Illustrator up and sometimes my entire machine! The only other programs I have running are Outlook and Bridge. It gets so bad I basically have to walk away and regain my composure or else I would tear my hair out!. Below are my specs
Windows 7 64bit SP1
8gb of RAM
Intel Core i5-2400 3.1GHz
500gb HDD
AMD Radeon HD 6350 512mb
Illustrator 16.0.3
The memory usage when it does this for Illustrator doesn't go above 400mb and CPU usage is 07. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?! I have tried puting each artboard on it's own layer and hiding that layer while I'm not working on it, but that doesn't do anything either. I checked the Event Viewer and didn't see any warnings or errors at the times this occurs either. PLEASE HELP!!!!!
I don't know if it is unique to your computer, this file you have or just AI. I tried to replicate the setup you are using but don't experience the lag.
I am now using Win8 64-bit, but on my previous laptop I didn't experience anything abnormal using Win7 64-bit.
The above also applies to the PNG redraw issue.
Can you share the file? If so, upload to dropbox.com and either plop a link here in the thread, or, if sensitive/not for world-consumption, consider sending me a PM with the link.

Slow performance in Illustrator CS6 for duplicating the repeating gradient dot pattern
Hi. I am using CS6 currently to do my gradient dot pattern using the 'Blend & 'Transform Each' tools for an artwork size of 4300mm x 2800mm.
I am using a 64-bits and 8 GB memory but my computer is not responding really well.
During the duplicating process, it will be lagging so badly and sometimes the illustrator will appear a box saying 'out of memory' and my artwork will be gone.
Do I need a better specification for my computer to run this? (Higher RAM? Processor? Graphic Card?)
Here are the specification of my computer:
========================================================
Intel(R) Xeon(R) Processor E5-2609 (Quad Core, 2.40GHz, 10MB, 6.4 GT/s)
8GB (4x2GB) DDR3 RDIMM Memory, 1333MHz,ECC
2 units of 1TB 7200RPM Hard Drive
NVIDIA Quadro 600
Windows(R) 7 Professional 64 bit
========================================================
or is there any method of creating the gradient dot pattern so that I can do it efficiently?
Thanks.Hi Mylenium,
These are the gradient patterns which I am trying to achieve on an artwork size of 4300mm x 2800mm:
Pattern A Pattern B
Hope to get some advices from you.

Slow Performance - Java Related?
This is an old box that I bought used recently, but the system install is recent. The system performs very slowly - about 50% of the speed of comparable Mac's in the XBench database. If I use Xupport to manully run "All" of the system maintenance crons I get some improvement, but it quickly goes back to being slow.
Looking at my logs I have a "boat load" of Java errors under CrashReporter; there will be a string of "JavaNativeCrash_pidXXX.log" entries - many of them, as follows:
An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.
Unexpected Signal : Bus Error occurred at PC=0x908611EC
Function=[Unknown.]
Library=/usr/lib/libobjc.A.dylib
NOTE: We are unable to locate the function name symbol for the error
just occurred. Please refer to release documentation for possible
reason and solutions.
Many of the line entries that follow, but not all of them, refer to SargentD2OL, which is a Java app, which I installed, but it did not work properly so I removed it. Yet I continue to get Java errors that refer to this now non-existant app.
I have read that Java apps use a lot of resources, and that D2OL in particular uses a lot of resources. Can my slow performance problem be Java related? If so, any idea of how I can fix this problem?
G4 AGP Graphics Mac OS X (10.3.9) 500 MHz, 512M RAMSorry to take so long to respond, but other issues in life have demanded my attention.
None of the solutions given have had any affect. My Java folder has both a 1.3.1 and a 1.4.2 app - the Java Update 2 will not reinstall because it sees an up-to-date app in the folder. But reading the update file it says the older Java will be removed - but it is still there. Problem?
On XBench the system scores a 9 to 10, while similar boxes on the XBench database score around 18 to 20. My cpu, memory, and video scores are very low. The HD through-put scores are the only ones that are normal. TechTool Pro 4 finds no problems. I have removed the memory sticks one at a time and retested after each cycle - no difference.
I have two drives, each with a 10.3.9 install. One works fine, scores around a 17 on XBench, the other scores a 9 to 10. So it appears to be a software problem. The slower install is a drive from a iMac G3 that has been moved to the G4 - are there issues with this?
My favored drive is the prior G3 one (newer and faster than the other drive that system tests faster in XBench) - it has my profile and all my info on it. It worked fine in the G3 - no problems.
Thanks for the help,

Performance Problems PrPro CS5 - Upgrade to CS6?
Hi
we often notice massive performance problems with PrPro CS5 here.
e.g. last week we were shooting with a Sony NEX-VG10. (MediaInfo:)
Format: AVC
Format profile: [email protected]
Format settings, CABAC: Yes
Format settings, ReFrames: 2 frames
Format settings, GOP: M=2, N=13
Bit rate: 16.0 Mbps
Width: 1 920 pixels
Height: 1 080 pixels
Display aspect ratio: 16:9
Frame rate: 25 fps
After linking footage into PrPro plaback stutters.
PrPro is very often not responsive to the keyboard at all.
Sometimes PrPro needs some seconds before playback starts.
This way editing is a pain...
No fx in timeline, only one or two clips. Same behaviour if I play a clip in the source window.
Project and sequence settings are correct. Playback quality set to 1/4.
These problems occure in several projects with footage from different cameras.
PrPro works ok with this (PAL/SD-)footage for example - MediaInfo:
Format: DV
Commercial name: DVCPRO
Width: 720 pixels
Height: 576 pixels
Display aspect ratio: 16:9
About the computer:
Dell Precision WorkStation T5500
24 GB RAM
2 processors w/ 8 cores together: Intel Xeon CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz
System: 250 GB (SSD)
Media: 2 TB (this is one normal internal hard drive, no raid)
NVIDIA Quadro 4000 (driver version 297.03)
connected to internet (is a must in this company)
connected to intranet, server (is a must in this company, too)
optimized for performance
windows firewall active
AVIRA Porfessional
What would PrPro force to work with HD footage?
Add an RAID? internal/external?
Upgrade to CS6?
Edncode footage to another codec before linking it into PrPro? (which codec? encode with AME?)
Buy a new processor? (i7? which one?)
Buy any Hardware pieces?
TIA for your guidiance and best regards.Take a look at the Dell T7400 currently at rank # 568, 'Base2008PT1' on Benchmark Results. It is somewhat similar to your own system, but has more memory, a better video card and some raid0 arrays. Nevertheless, it is around 3.4 times slower than a fast system. My guess is that your system is even slower.
The material you try to edit is very demanding and requires a beefy computer. Even though there is nothing wrong with the dual Xeon E5620's, their clock speed works against you (I have the same CPU's in a file server, but that is far less demanding than editing), as does the amount of memory in the system. You can be helped with more disks, but don't expect miraculous performance improvements. But all little things help.
The alternative is a complete new system, but that can be pricey. Even if you build it yourself, see Planning & Building a NLE system it can be costly. It gives you very fast performance as demonstrated on the Reflections page and you should not get such a system from Dell or HP, unless you have unlimited funds. -
Does anyone know about Master Collection CS6 performance problems on OSX Mountain Lion?
I have a 15" MBP (late 2011) and I'm having some poor performance problems even after a clear install, reindexing the system and fixing all permission errors in Disk Utility. I have some suspicions about compatibility problems with Adobe Master Collection CS6 cause those are the programms I always work with and in wich I have experienced a bad performance.
Hardware test says everything is fine. Any sugestion?Guys, I suffered the same problem for 4 days. I am on the new MBP Pro Retina Display + Mountain Lion 16GB Ram, etc...
I first thought it was to do with retina display however no, that is not the case.
SOLUTION (sounds odd but works):
The only way I found to fix it, is setting photoshop to use the East Asian text engine instead of the Middle East one. (Prefs -> Type -> East Asian). Then restart Photoshop. -
After effects (and Premiere) are both virtually unusable for me after installing CS6.
I never had much of a performance problem before this upgrade. I have a Windows 7 setup, with 8 GB ram, 2.4 ghz Quad Core processors, plenty of disk space, running off local disk drives. I've tried optimizing my registry and running only one program. Also I've turned off Multi Processing and Auto Save. Rendering is also half as fast as it was in CS5.5
But, whenever I make a change on the screen to a graphic or a setting, it takes anywhere from 30 sec to 1 minute to update the screen. Sometimes I get this strobing effect where the AE screen strobes off and on and I see the desktop, about 20 times per second. This will usually stop if I click on the menu bar a few times. But not always.
Any suggestions are welcome! I've got work to do!
:<)GregLook at open GL and driver issues first. That's probably where the hit is coming.

Why performance of Illustrator CS6 slower than Illustrator CS5.5?
Ex: Process get text of TextFrame has 657 characters:
Dim t1 As String
Dim t2 As String
t1 = DateTime.Now.Minute & " " & DateTime.Now.Second & " " & DateTime.Now.Millisecond
Dim text As String
For iChar = 1 To iCharNum
oChar = oContents.Characters(iChar)
Dim str As String
str = oChar.contents.ToString
text = text & str
Next
t2 = DateTime.Now.Minute & " " & DateTime.Now.Second & " " & DateTime.Now.Millisecond

Extremely slow performance with Radeon HD 7870
Hi,
I am using a number of Adobe programs on my new Windows 8 64 bit system, with 16 gigs of ram, an Intel Core i5 2.67ghz, and AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 gig. All the programs (including After Effects and Illustrator) work very well with the exception of Photoshop CS6 64 bit, which has extremely slow performance with Use Graphics Processor enabled in my preferences (which Photoshop selects by default). If I turn off Use Graphics Processor, the slow performance vanishes. If I change Drawing Mode to Basic, there might be a slightly detectable improvement over Normal and Advanced, but it's still horribly slow. The refresh rate seems to be just a few frames per second. Everything is slow: brushes, zooming, panning, everything.
I've tried changing the settings I've seen suggested elsewhere: I switched Cache levels to 2, history states to 10, and tile size to 128k. No effect. Photoshop is currently at the default of using 60% of available ram. Efficiency has remained at 100% throughout all my tests. Also, this slow performance has affected me from the moment I installed Photoshop; it didn't crop up after previous good performance. The problem exists regardless of the size or number of documents I have open. Performance is still terrible even when I create a 500 x 500 pixel blank new canvas and try a simple task like drawing with the brush.
Photoshop is fully up to date, and so are my graphics drivers (Catalyst version 13.1). Any help would be greatly appreciated; at the moment performance is so bad in Photoshop that it's unusable with graphics acceleration enabled. Thanks in advance for replying.

I followed your suggestion, Noel, and uninstalled my drivers with the Catalyst Uninstall Utility (which I hadn't used before), rebooted, reinstalled Catalyst 13.2 Beta 7, rebooted, deleted the PS Prefs, started PS, and now the performance is radically improved!
It baffles me why I would need to do a clean driver uninstall in a new system environment that has only ever had this video card, and is only a few months old, but that action seems to be what's improved the situation. Note that because I deleted the PS preferences, the good performance now occurs with the default Use Graphics Processor enabled, and Drawing Mode set to Advanced (with every feature in the Advanced dialog checked except 30bit display).
Having no reference point, I can't tell for sure if performance is as good as it theoretically ought to be for my system specs, but using the standard 13px brush is only slightly laggy behind the cursor, even if I become reckless and squiggle on the canvas violently. It wasn't just sluggish response before: Photoshop seemed to be in pain trying to draw the line segments as it laboured to catch up to the cursor. That is pretty much gone now.
Much more tellingly, zooming and panning the canvas is like it ought to be, responsive and clean, more or less like it was for me in CS4 with my old Nvidia 9600GT. The poor performance with zooming and panning was the most worrying aspect of the issue. It's a great relief to see these working more properly now.
I have to confess I'm a little embarrassed to have drug you through all this hassle only to discover that something as rudimentary as properly cleaning out the drivers would be the apparent solution. I never would have imagined that doing that, with such a new and stable system, would make any difference, since I don't have a legacy of older drivers dotting my hard drive. In any event, I'm really grateful that you guys took the time to try to help me.
In the interest of completeness, here's the relevant portion of my system info after doing the reinstall steps I mentioned above:

As you can see, the Microsoft Basic Render Driver still appears as a Video Card in the list. This presumably has something to do with Windows 8, and I really don't know if its presence here is still a sign that my card is not being used to its optimal capability. I have a hunch that the slight lag that I am still experiencing with the brush when Use Graphics Processor is on -- totally absent with the acceleration turned off -- implies that Photoshop is still unable to take maximum advantage of my card. I would assume that the brush tool should be more responsive with acceleration on than off, in a rig without any issues, but that's just assumption on my part. If you turn off Use Graphics Processor on your systems, is the brush tool more or less responsive?
But again, panning the canvas with the hand tool is now extremely responsive, without any screen tearing or visible lag, and that's a massive improvement over the total meltdown of performance I was suffering from before.
Thanks again very much for your help. I'm grateful to all of you who took the time to chime in. -

CS5 or Pc Slow performance?
Hi there,I have a problem with my pc at work and because I am not quite sure in which one is exactly the problem I decide to ask you.The pc is intel pentium 4 with 3 Gb Ram XP professional service pack 3 Photoshop CS 5.
The pc is connected to server(data base).When I open a bunch of photos (20-30) approximately 8 - 12 MB each one and sometimes I experience a slow performance(for example I am trying to retouch/clone something and it takes a lot of time for the pc to redraw/respond) the interesting part is that it doesn't happen always(sometimes can be even 3 photos and it will take ages to do something) also I notice that after appr. 20 minutes it's suddenly start to work as it should normally(it's like there was an update and when is updated/complete everything is fine).When that start to happen today I restart CS5 and load the same photos and it work fine, so it is really bizarre for me.I put a 89% ram usage to the CS5(I pretty much use only all the time Photoshop and bridge ) also made the history steps to 7 and the cache to 6 for big and flat files.I was checking the Efficiency and it's all the time 100 % so it's like it's not the photoshop but like I said today i just restard the ps and upload the same photos and got fix...I tried to copy the photos on my hard drive(so it should not be affect of the performance of the server but still the same as when I take them straight from the server.Because the hard drive is only 80 gb ( I don't store anything there ) i did clean up and disk defragment still the same situation.Do you know what can be the problem and is it the Photoshop or the Pc?I'll appreciate it.
Thank youCould be that your PC is sometimes looking to check things on the server, and maybe the server or network is busy/bogged down and you PC gets caught in that cycle mess.....so,
suggest next time you use Ps, set win performance monitor perfmon.exe or perfmon.msc ; setup to view graph of disk use and network activity and cpu usage.....then you may see/track a problem area.
on win7, task manager does most of the same stuff -
First off, i think it's sad that i have to use my non apple device to post this question... Why has my iPad become absolutely useless after updating to iOS 8.1? I am unable to use my mini because it crashes, slow performance, major battery drain.
Restore iPad to Factory Default; do not restore from backup. It may be the cause of the problem.

Report performance problems on htmldb 1.6
Hello everybody,
I'm not a guru in both pl-sql and htmldb and I'm having slow performances on two queries, that are similar, so I think the root of the problem is the same..here they are:
This query populates a select list and takes about 2 minutes:
SELECT FLAG_VERBAL,FLAG_NUMBER
FROM DISCHARGE_FLAG
WHERE FLAG_NUMBER IN (SELECT UNIQUE(FLAG) FROM HYDRODATA
WHERE LSFLD_ID IN (SELECT ID FROM DEMO_SIMO_CGMS_UPPDANUBE_ID))This query is in a Report (SQL query Region) and takes about 100 seconds:
SELECT LSFLD_ID, MOMENT, DISCHARGE, FLAG
FROM HYDRODATA
WHERE
FLAG = to_number(:P6_DISCHARGE_TYPE)
AND LSFLD_ID IN(
SELECT ID FROM DEMO_SIMO_CGMS_UPPDANUBE_ID
AND moment >= to_date(:P6_FROM_DATE, 'yyyy-mm-dd')
AND moment <= to_date(:P6_TO_DATE, 'yyyy-mm-dd')
ORDER BY 1,2By my testing, it seems that the problem is correlated to the sub-SELECT inside the main SELECT.
If I substitute the sub-SELECT statement ( SELECT ID FROM DEMO_SIMO_CGMS_UPPDANUBE_ID) with a list of its costant values, the output of those queries appears in few seconds.
Another strange thing is that if I run alone the sub-select SELECT ID FROM DEMO_SIMO_CGMS_UPPDANUBE_ID it also takes few seconds!
So why together they need so much time??
Maybe the problem is in the table DEMO_SIMO_CGMS_UPPDANUBE_ID? It is populated by a process that:
deletes its content and
copies the selected values (by check boxes) of a previous Report :
DELETE FROM DEMO_SIMO_CGMS_UPPDANUBE_ID;
FOR I in 1..HTMLDB_APPLICATION.G_F01.COUNT LOOP
INSERT INTO DEMO_SIMO_CGMS_UPPDANUBE_ID(id) VALUES (HTMLDB_APPLICATION.G_F01(i));
END LOOP;Thanks in advance! :DThis is really a SQL question and not a HTML DB question, but I will pose some things for you to consider. Just some high-level tips without getting into the details of your queries.
1) Time your queries in SQL*Plus. I would guess that they are as slow in SQL*Plus as they are in HTML DB
2) Keep in mind that use of functions like TO_NUMBER or TO_CHAR or TO_DATE applied to database columns disables the use of indexing on columns.
3) Look to see if the columns you are joining on are indexed.
4) Use EXPLAIN PLAN and tracing to see what execution plan Oracle is taking.
5) Rewrite your queries. Join your three tables together in one SELECT statement instead of using IN's.
For example change your first query to:
SELECT FLAG_VERBAL,FLAG_NUMBER
FROM DISCHARGE_FLAG df, HYDRODATA h, EMO_SIMO_CGMS_UPPDANUBE_ID e
WHERE df.FLAG_NUMBER = h.FLAG
AND h.LSFLD_ID = e.ID

Slow performance of discoverer portlets
Hi,
I am running into slow performance of a particular page in portal, there are multiple sites hosted on the portal but these all have static text and are very quick to load but the one page with discoverer portlets and a web-clippping portlet is taking ages. If I run these reports on their own they are instant. Has anyone had similar problems with 9.0.2 portal and the discoverer reports ? I tried to identify a particular report that may be the culprit by deleting them one by one and to no avail. After a few hours effort I found the design mode was hanging as well. Again, just for this 1 page.
There are 3 tabs on this page with about 4 report portlets and 1 web-clipping portlet.
Thanks for any help,
BrandonThanks for the help.
Seems to have been resolved although I'm not sure if thats the end of the story. Will wait and see.....
So far apparently a port conflict of some sort in the discoverer config was causing it to hang and then also other system demands on the network and server housing the discoverer end-user layer were also causing problems.
No error messages unfortunately...... -
Extremely slow performance in comparison to RDC-based report
Today our application uses the Crystal Reports RDC. In the last
ten years we have made good experience with Crystal Reports.
In the next few months we want to migrate our application to
JAVA.
Because the reports offer a great reuse-potential, we would like
to implement them via CR4E.
But during the first benchmark tests we made a very bad experience.
Running (Printing) in CR4E the reports needed from 20 up to 480 percent
more time in comparison to the RDC-based reports.
When using POJOs need from 25 up to 570 percent more time.
When printing the reports from within the CR2008 designer there is
no performance difference.
The reports have from 4 to 82 pages.
We didn´t expect such a huge performance difference.
Is CR4E in general slower than the RDC-based Crystal Reports?
Or are there any parameters in CR4E in addition to the RDC-based
solution for tuning the reports?
Edited by: Rainer Graedtke on Nov 9, 2009 2:44 PMHi Ted,
thanks for the fast response.
Is there another "datasource option" with better performance than POJO?
In the upcoming JAVA-version of our application we would like to "feed"
our reports from memory, not from the underlying database.
One more statement concerning our performance problem:
In our reports we make extensive use of subreports.
Each report has the minimum of two subreports, one for the pageheader,
one for the pagefooter.
This is necessary because we have changing headers and footers
depending on the contents of the details.
The report with the largest performance loss contains 29 subreports!
RDC-based it prints in 10 seconds, Java-based we need over 50 seconds.
Is there any suggestion how to improve the performance of our reports in
JAVA/CR4E other than reducing the number of subreports?
Another question concerning the keycode-problem:
We have designed the reports in the CR2008 Designer and we want to run
them under CR4E. Is this a valid approach?
Sincerely Rainer

SQL report performance problem
I have a SQL classic report in Apex 4.0.2 and database 11.2.0.2.0 with a performance problem.
The report is based on a PL/SQL function returning a query. The query is based on a view and pl/sql functions. The Apex parsing schema has select grant on the view only, not the underlying objects.
The generated query runs in 1-2 sec in sqlplus (logged in as the Apex parsing schema user), but takes many minutes in Apex. I have found, by monitoring the database sessions via TOAD, that the explain plan in the Apex and sqlplus sessions are very different.
The summary:
In sqlplus SELECT STATEMENT ALL_ROWS Cost: 3,695
In Apex SELECT STATEMENT ALL_ROWS Cost: 3,108,551
What could be the cause of this?
I found a blog and Metalink note about different explain plans for different users. They suggested to set optimizer_secure_view_merging='FALSE', but that didn't help.Hmmm, it runs fast again in SQL Workshop. I didn't expect that, because both the application and SQL Workshop use SYS.DBMS_SYS_SQL to parse the query.
Only the explain plan doesn't show anything.
To add: I changed the report source to the query the pl/sql function would generate, so the selects are the same in SQL Workshop and in the application. Still in the application it's horribly slow.
So, Apex does do something different in the application compared to SQL Workshop.
