Slow performance while charging MacBook Pro 2011
What I'm experiencing currently is a massive drop in performance while the laptop is plugged in and charging. Running anything CPU intensive like music production software or gaming causes massive spikes within 5 minutes of doing a task, and eventually leads the application to a pretty non-responsive state.
As soon as the light on the MagSafe goes green to indicate a complete charge, everything is fine. Same also applies to me unplugging the MagSafe and switching to battery. What was spiking the CPU to 300% is now sitting back at 15%.
I have tried multiple different power supplies, and also an SMC reset, though I don't think that is actually working. I remember in the past after doing an SMC reset, the laptop would cycle through a restart or do something to indicate the job is done, where as now it just straight up boots like nothing happened.
Any ideas what may be causing this?
OS X 10.9.4 / MacBookPro8,2 (Early 2011)
Try the SMC and PRAM resets again:

Frustratingly slow performance Mavericks on Macbook Pro
Hi
I have a mid 2009 Macbook Pro with Mavericks installed. Lately I have been getting frustrating spinning beachball hangs, apps crashing (particularly mail and aperture), boot times of 5 minutes plus, and shutdown times as long as 7 minutes. I've read through as many forum posts as I can manage and not one seems to solve the problem. Looking through the system.log today I have noticed a few error messages that may or may not be contributing, but cannot work out what they mean or what to do about them. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking about upgrading the internal 250GB HDD to either a 1TB hybrid SSHD or a 250GB SSD, and obviously doing a clean install. My only worry at the moment is losing lots of really importan data and being able to recover it from Time Machine.
An extract from the system.log is below. My concerns are about the CGContextErase function, the One of the two will be used error, and the FT Message Delivery Failed errors. All of these are happenning around the time the machine is unresponsive.
Thanks in advance
Chris.

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and not helpful. -
Slow performance while charging
I've recently installed a Pass & Seymour model TM8-USBWCC6 wall charger in my home. It provides two USB ports with 5VDC 2.1 amp charging ability. When connecting an iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s, performance on the phones greatly decreases. I have only tested with these two devices. I tend to use my iPhone while charging but I can't even do that anymore because of how slow it runs. Any thoughts as to what can be causing this? I am using an Apple lightning cable. The charging itself appears to be running fine with no errors.
Try the SMC and PRAM resets again:

High CPU Usage when charging Macbook Pro 2011 13"
Hey,
Over the last week or so I noticed that when my Macbook Pro (Late 2011 13") was switched on and charging the CPU usage shoots up to ~90% with the fan operating at roughly 6.2k RPM. I have had the laptop a year come the end of the month and mainly use it for word processing, coding and general web browsing.
I updated OS X to 10.8.3 this morning and the problem still exists. If I remove my charger the problem goes away.
I've tried resetting the SMC but I don't know if it worked.
Has anyone else had this issue and been able to rectify it?
There is no Apple store in my home town and I'm praying there is something I can do rather than drive 20 miles or so to the nearest store.
If it is of any benefit, it is the stock build in terms of RAM and HDD (haven't got round to ordering an SSD yet ).
Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.3
Boot ROM Version: MBP81.0047.B27
SMC Version (system): 1.68f99
Thank youHi Fernando,
I came across a Google search result which was from a forum belonging to a folding application I had previously installed, I cannot recall the name of it.
When I checked Activity Monitor application I could see that there was a process belonging to the folding@home application. Even though I had removed the application it still left a file behind which was continually being used (somehow).
Hope this helps. You may not have had this application in particular, but I guess there could be similar behaviours with other applications?
Kind regards
Jamie

Hi, about a month ago I started noticing decreased performance from my MBP. Certain applications take a while to open while others open right away. MS Office 2008, Adobe CS3 suite take a while to open and fully load (more then a min) while applications such as internet explorer and games load right away. I am not sure whats wrong with it...it has more then enough memory (2gb) and a dual processor inside. Also, there is plenty of space on my HD (53gb free from 93gb).
Any help would be apperciated. I do have the disks for Lepord but I have not installed yet...would that help the situation or worsen it?Hi,
There is no drop in your performance, Microsoft Office 2008 and Adobe CS3 are very large Apps, It's totally normal to take a minute or more to load. I have the same apps and I also have logic pro and final cut pro which also take a minute or more to load. What it is doing is loading the app fundamentals... into memory. -
IMovie '08 very slow performance on a MacBook Pro 2,33 Dual Core
I imported a 1 hour video clip today. Then I wanted to add 14 chapter marks. After 8 hours trying accomplish this simple task I gave up at chapter 6. It was extremely slow. I then did the same task in the previous version of iMovie in just 10 minuttes. Why is that?
I have the latest update on OS-X and iMovie '08 and all my other iLife '08 perform flawlessI agree/confirm. The new OS update made a significant improvement. I do not recall the settings I used. I just put everything to High and then reduced a few to medium until it ran smooth. I am pretty happy with gameplay now. My startup time is fair for me. It takes roughly 2 minutes for me to actually be in the game playing.
Im not sure if Apple intentionally set out to made this improvement as I read nothing about a video card update in the notice.
I wonder whatelse can be done to play this game at its full potiential on my X1600 MBP...I love to play this with my daughter. To play at all High settings would be jolly fun! lol -

So a few weeks ago my MacBook Pro 2011 started having charging problems. I would use it normally. Then plug it in to charge anywhere between 5-20 percent like I've been doing for the past year that I've had it (since August 2011). Anyway, what happens now is that it charges but extremely slowly - at least 4 hours to fully charge as opposed to the 1 1/2 to 2 hours that it used to take. Also, it seems to be draining a lot quicker than it used to while only browsing the internet. Furthermore, while charging, the battery meter goes from the percent its charged to to "not charging" back and forth. What's going on? Is there a problem with my battery, my computer, or the magsafe charger? [please refer to the pictures below to get a better understanding of my problem - these pictures were taken over a 2 hour time period - a time period that usually is enough to charge my computer] - if you'll notice, in the first two pictures, the percent barely went up by 10 in a half hour period:

Thank you,
macstrtry doing a SMC RESET and see if that sorts it out for you.
if doesn't work - better take it to Apple and have them look at it before something else goes wrong...
good luck - hope you get it sorted out.. -
Unusual shutoff on Macbook Pro 2011 while sleeping
My 13" Macbook Pro 2011 will be fully charged and will go to sleep normally. However, I will go about my day and 4 hours later I won't be able to turn my computer on unless I have it connected to the power adapter. Then when I turn on my computer, the battery life percentage is 0%. Why is this?
Isn't the battery supposed to last at least a day or so while in sleep mode?Your hard drive will last a while longer if you keep the moving to the minimum when it is on, but on short term there aren't any problems. I have never even tried not to move my MacBook when the drive's spinning, and it still works fine after 2 years.
Of course, if you would have an SSD, move the thing as much as you want. Since they don't move on themselves, they can be moved freely. -
Late Macbook Pro 2011 won't charge via MagSafe adapter.
My friends Macbook Pro 2011 same as mine wont charge the battery via MagSafe adapter. The battery is good and the adapter also, ive checked them on my Mac. The problem is that on her Mac it won't charge. I've change the MagSafe adapter on her computer and it didn't work still no charge, no green light on the L shaped adapter. Can it be the Logic Board?
Resetting SMC could solve the problem.

My Macbook pro 2011 suddenly has a really slow bootup. What can I do?
My Macbook pro 2011 suddenly has a really slow bootup. What can I do? I did install a cannon printer upgrade and security upgrade. Not sure if it was something to do with that. Also I tried the disk utility repair and didn't improve anything. I also reset PRAM and SMC.
1. Try booting in e Verbose mode - press and hold [cmd] + [v] keys just right after the boot chord sounds till you get a black screen and white letters.
if there are some delays in the boot process - you should see where the system is stuck.
this mode is not permanent - the next [re-] boot will be normal.
2. repair permissions. disk utility does fine. Disk Warrior is better.
sometimes after half done updates (it may happen though should not) there are items that are "belonging to someone else"
3. try cache cleaner (or there are some other utilities as well - I just like SlCC more) http://www.northernsoftworks.com/snowleopardcachecleaner.html - it's shareware though the basic functionality is free for you to use.
Try caches -> deep cleaning (please read the developers site what it does) and select checkmark at all options - reply yes to the requests and after a reboot the next reboot should be as it is intended.
p.s be sure you do have backup -
Macbook Pro (2011) froze while working, forced shut down, now won't turn on. Grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel for hours. Help?
Unfortunately do not know the operating system since I never updated anything and I can't get in to it.
Thanks for your assistance. If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
