Slow playback framerate in CS4

Hello all,
I am having issues with playback framerates inside of Premiere CS4. I realize there is a similar topic currently open for discussion, but I have my doubts as to whether our problems are related, so I went ahead and posted my own thread.
I just bought a new Dell laptop (system specs below) about a month ago, and loaded Production Premium CS4 on it to start editing (after installing all the updates, of course.) My issue is this: Whenever I play any kind of video inside of Premiere, the framerate is very choppy (i.e. 15-18 FPS; it looks like cell phone video.) This happens with any format I try to play, whether it's DV, HDV, or anything else. The video plays back fine outside of the program, so the files are fine. Also, it doesn't matter whether the video is rendered or not; it always plays back at the same choppy framerate. As a side note, I had the same issue when I loaded the same video into After Effects (no effects, just straight video), but when I did a RAM preview, it played perfectly.
I have tried editing this same footage on my desktop, which has inferior hardware, and have had no problems. I've brought over the projects from the desktop on an external drive to test with known working projects, and I get the same result. My sequence settings are correct, all of the drivers are up to date, and the hard drive data rate is very good. My main guess is that something with the video card is not playing nice with Premiere; I am not a big fan of ATI, but it was the only card I could get when I purchased the machine.
Any advice or tips would be very much appreciated; thank you in advance for your time.
Dell Studio 1558 Laptop
Intel i7 1.6GHz
Seagate 500GB 7200RPM  HDD
4GB RAM 1066MHz
ATI Radeon HD 5740
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Harm and Bill, thank you for your advice. I realize that a single drive is below system requirements, but I have edited both HDV and SD video on a single drive without problems for several years; not the ideal setup, but it works for my budget. Also, and I failed to mention this in my earlier post (sorry), I have tried editing the footage off of an external USB 2.0 drive, with the same results. Again, I know USB 2.0 is not ideal for video editing, but it has worked for me for several years. As a side note, my friend can edit the same footage on a Mac with a single 5400 RPM HDD with no problems.
As far as tweaking the system, I have set up several Windows machines for editing, and my process is similar to Harm's article on setting up and tweaking a Windows system; in fact, I think I picked up several tips from it a while back. I have re-read and made sure I did all my usual fixes, and still have wierd playback.
But now on to the progress I have made. I was playing around some more and  discovered a semi-solution: If I don't have my magnification mode set to  "Fit" in the monitor, the video plays back fine. However, if I set the  magnification mode to 100% and then resize the window to fit, I get  choppy playback again. 75% is as large as I can get the playback window  with satisfactory results.
This to me seems to lead away from the HDD being the problem. Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like the hard drive would read the video at the same rate regardless of how big Premiere was displaying it.
Again, thank you both very much for your time and advice!

  • HD Playback in Premiere CS4

OK, I don't want to sound like a broken record here.  I know there's plenty of problems with HD playback on CS4 regardless of the system you're on, but I can't see a reason why I'm still having stutter / slow playback on this system:
HP xw4300 Workstation with Windos XP SP3
    Nvidia Quadro FX 1400
    4 CPU 3.4GHz
RAID 0 with 2 new hitachi 7200 RPM 640GB drives
Speed test says average transfer for the RAID is 200MB/s, which (from what I understand) should be more than enough for an AVCHD 60i stream.  I also tried to capture via Blackmagic Intensity with the same results.
Some folks say it's CPU, others say drive speed, others say it's a problem with CS4 displaying interlaced footage.  I can see now why this is enough for some folks to switch to FCP.  RIght now, I'll take any answer.  Help!

OK, that makes you disk setup a lot clearer. From what you posted and what I read, you only had 2 Hitachi disks raided. Hence my remark and this shows again that we can only read what you and others write and if that information is incomplete, it may lead responders to draw false conclusions.
In a previous system I had a P4 3.4 GHz and while editing HDV was somewhat possible, it was taxing on the system, in my case causing temperature problems and PSU (power supply unit) problems. AVCHD is a completely different animal and despite what Adobe says, IMO requires at least a finely tuned i7 system that is somewhat OC'ed to around 3.6 GHZ to be able to edit that material in a decent way. You will still not get any real fluid, RT experience, but you can get by.
The problem is that AVCHD is a good delivery format, but a lousy format to edit. Salespeople do not know that, or do not tell prospective buyers that even though the cameras are relatively cheap, it is completely offset by the required investment in PC hardware to edit the material. IMO a Canon HV40 is a much better investment for around the same price as a comparable AVCHD camera, but much nicer on your PC budget and your editing experience.

  • Has anyone resolved the slow playback issue?

I've run across a few older posts related to slow playback of Captivate output, but it doesn't look like the issue has been resolved. I'm experiencing the same problem on a random basis.
At first I thought it was just in the preview mode, so every time I made a change, I published the project to test it. Then the published files started playing back extremely slowly, but not all the time. For example:
    1. I published the project as a swf file, and it played back fine.
    2. I added one slide with a Fade transition and published again. The playback was absurdly slow this time, and I hadn't changed any settings.
    3. Without changing anything, I published again, but I selected the Windows Executable output option. The playback was fine.
    4. I published again, but I switched back to the swf output - it was fine this time.
    5. Tried the Preview feature again. The mouse movement was extremely slow, but the slide transitions weren't as bad - just choppy.
I'm using Captivate 5.5 on Windows XP. Any thoughts?

Does the swf play that way on other computers besides your own?

  • Posting lots of slides with video slow playback to a halt

In our slide of about 50 slides, when we have one video slide, it plays ok, but each slide we add after, makes the captivate play slower and slower. In this case, we have about a dozen slides with video, and with all video slides in, the playback is not useable. Video is set to progressive video download and are only a few meg in size
How can we handles several slides with video?
    Thanks

This sounds like a bandwidth issue.
Do you encounter the same slow playback issue if you publish the course to your local PC and play the course from your hard drive?  If not, the issue isn't likely CPU-related.
If local playback is also slow, your CPU/RAM resources might be unable to keep up with decoding your video at it's current compression or size.  You might need to use smaller, lighter video.
If you want to see whether or not your issue is related to bandwidth limitations, download the Charles web debugging proxy software (http://www.charlesproxy.com/download/) and use this to watch the actual downloads in progress for the videos in your course.  If you see that Captivate is downloading more than one video at a time, this might explain why things start to bog down.  You might need to restructure your course so that each video is downloaded separately as the user comes to it.  At worst, tThis could require breaking your course into more modules.

  • Slow playback while using pedometer

Newbie here. Not sure if this has been covered. If so, please provide a link to the previous discussion.
My 5th Gen iPod Nano has slow playback when I use the pedometer. Has there been any solution provided by Apple for this issue? I know I'm not the only one experiencing this problem.
The reason I bought the 5th Gen Nano was because of the pedometer feature so if it doesn't work properly, it's kind of a waste of my money.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I had the same problem, but never knew it was because of the pedometer. It would start skipping and slowing the beat after a few minutes of running. I tried all different kinds of arm bands or putting it in my pocket, because I thought it was because of the movement. I saw this comment, though, and just ran without the pedometer, and it works like a charm. I'm not sure the fix for this, but it sure defeats the purpose of a pedometer. good luck.

  • PE1 Exported MPEG (DVD) - Slow Playback

It has been a while since I've used PE and I just did a clean install of my OS (XP Pro) and all software.
I'm not sure if this is a problem with playback or encoding, but when I play exported clips that used the DVD Compatible setting, the playback is slow in any application (WMP, PE, etc.)
However, exported videos that I made about a year ago with the same setting seem to play fine.
I then used MyDVD to burn the suspect video clips to DVD and they play just fine in a set-top DVD player.
I'm also almost sure that these suspect video clips played just fine right after I created them (in WMP).
I tried "repairing" PE, updating WMP to version 11, and istalled all other updates that I could find.
Other MPEG formats seem to work fine.

Time has stood still for me...I'm still using version 1 as it has worked for me quite well up until now.
I usually import MPEG or AVI files into PE, depending on which camera I use or if I used my TV card to capture/record from it's tuner or my 8mm camcorder.
I render the workspace and the video plays great in PE, transitions and all.
I use the Export button (or File > Export) to export to an MPEG file on my hard drive, where I select the DVD Compatible preset.
Then I play the video in WMP. Ironically, the videos I made from before I formatted and re-imaged my system play just fine, and they were made with the DVD Compatible preset the same way as today, but the ones I made post re-imaging my machine play slow. Even more ironic is that I'm sure that they played just fine right after I made them (I'm sure the first thing I did after exporting the MPEG file was to watch it full screen in WMP. The problem came on suddenly with all videos that I recently made).
    An update!
I installed the K-Lite mega codec pack and it detected a couple "damaged" codecs, which I let it remove. They were an mp3 encoder/decoder, apparently from my SBLive audio card.
This seemed to fix the files with slow playback, but now I am unable to import the files that I exported from PE (the DVD Compatible files) as PE complains that the file is damaged or unsupported. They play fine, however. I will check a short clip to make sure this is still not a problem.
It may be that PE cannot import the files because the "damaged" codecs were removed by K-Lite, and are indeed not supported, or that the files were encoded badly. I'm not sure why they play OK now.
(I'm really only interested in a set of TV programs that I recorded and used PE to trim the clips, then exported to MPEG. I want to bring them back into PE to make a DVD. I can get 7 shows on 1 DVD this way, if I use MyDVD, it does not compress them any further and will only fit 3 shows per DVD. I deleted the source MPEG files, so I'm stuck!)
Another odd thing is that I got a Media Off-Line for an MPEG file that has not changed in any way for over a year. I can re-import the file just fine, but the original is still unavailable in the media list.
And now I'm not sure I like K-Lite as it pops up a tray icon everytime I access any sort of media device. I have so many codecs now it'm going to have to learn to manage them.
I guess at this point I don't really have a question, other than what to do with the K-Lite pack. I figure I'm stuck with the suspicious MPEG files that I want to compress further and burn to DVD. Wish I know what the problem was though. I guess in the future I should just make a custom MPEG preset with a lower bit rate. That looks like what PE does anyway when I select to "fit to media" when making a DVD preview (to a folder). Then I might be able to us MyDVD to make the DVD directly. I just think it won't take any MPEG file (must be DVD compliant MPEG2).
Thanks for bearing through this long winded reply.

  • IPad 2 has slow playback.  What is the fix? Aside from getting Galaxy Tab...

iPad 2 has slow playback.  What is the fix? Aside from getting Galaxy Tab...

Playback quality/responsiveness is a function of network speed. If you have slow playback you need to checkout your network (ISP) and the characteristics and configuration of your networking equipment (WiFi router, etc.)
YouTube performance is excellent on my iPad connected through a high-speed cable modem. What kind of network do you have?

  • Can I slow playback of music?

I know you can slow the playback of audiobooks but can I slow the playback of a music file. I am trying to learn a song and slower playback would make that a lot easier.
    Dell   Windows XP

If you just change things in Win Explorer, itunes will lose the paths to the music files.
Your ratings & other metadata are stored in a file named iTunesLibrary.itl. That database also stores the exact paths to all the music.
If your exHD2 has the same folder structure/paths as the exHD1 that died, you might be able to assign it the drive letter that exHD1 was using, and it will all work.
Here is a good background article to read before doing anything.
    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/
Especially the section, *iTunes: The Database versus the Content*.
My advice is to make a backup of your ITL file now before doing anything, and put it in a safe place so you can get to it if you need to try a few things.
I assume you are like most folks and still have the iTL file in the default place on the C: drive.
Make a copy and put it on exHD2 or in another folder on C:.

  • Slow Playback in Premiere Pro CS4 (how do you lower preview res?)

Hi everyone, I was just wondering how to lower the playback/preview resolution while3 editing in Premiere Pro CS4? I'm editing 720p video (.mov format, that's what my camera shoots in, so I don't think I can change that). All I can see when I right click the source monitor is "Quality > High, Draft, Automatic". Is there anything else I can select? (kind of like in after effects, where you can set it to 1/2, 1/4, etc.). I've been searching the internet for the better part of the day and all I've found is that 'quality' menu I mentioned earlier.
It's still painfully slow to watch on 'draft', and it doesn't look like it makes that much of a difference in quality. Now, my laptop isn't exactly the rendering beast I'd like it to be, but it can handle 720p [slowly] in after effects so I think it should work in premiere too.
    Thanks!
PS: Any of you experts think this would be a good computer for NLE / rendering effects?
    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7192259&Sku=B69- 1277

    Thanks for clearing that up!
New desktop it is... I'll probably be swapping out the low power drive for a faster one, since Harm mentioned that in his 'building for NLE' thread.
Oh yeah, one more thing: How can I force it to render? For example, I put an HD clip into the timeline, it has a yellow bar along the top of the timeline in it's location, yet when I hit enter it just plays (with annoyingly low fps)?? Going to sequence > render effects in work area doesn't work either.

  • Has Premiere Elements 12 fixed the jittery playback issues from CS4?

I use Premiere Pro CS4 to edit my videos. I shoot with a Canon DSLR the 60D and import the video files straight into Premiere Pro without the extra transcoding step. (too much trouble to transcode the raw video with every clip). I get jittery and jerky motion in the left hand Source Monitor, when I make my in and out point edits. It plays fine once I have made my edits and render them in the right hand Program Monitor. I have heard that this has been fixed in version CS5 and higher. I can't afford to buy the CS program again, but could purchase Premiere Elements 12 the latest version. Would the jittery playback still be there in the left Source Monitor window of Elements 12, or has it been fixed in all forward versions newer than CS4?
Also if there is a way to make the imported video play smooth in the Source Monitor directly from CS4, without the transcoding process, I would like to hear about that for sure. Thanks for your help guys. Ken in Toronto.

    Ken
I am surprised that the Premiere Pro group did not answer your Premiere Pro question before transferring your thread to the Premiere Elements Forum. The Premiere Pro question seems to be the immediate one. Your question seems to have been ignored by the Premiere Pro people
Also if there is a way to make the imported video play smooth in the Source Monitor directly from CS4, without the transcoding process, I would like to hear about that for sure.
An answer to that might avoid you having to get involved with a new program, Premiere Elements 12.
Nonetheless, I cannot offer you any guarantee about editing 60D footage in Premiere Elements 12. I would need lots of details of your specific video properties and computer environment to approach an answer. Your best and quickest answer will come from downloading and installing Premiere Elements 12 and determining its compatibility in your computer environment and if it meets your video editing needs.

  • Slow playback on Roku2 of MOV file after Adobe Premier Element Export

I have video files from a flash camcorder that encodes as MOV files.  This plays back fine on Roku2 using Roksbox and also on Real Player.
When I export a video file from Adobe Premiere Elements 4 the playback through Roksbox to Roku2 is horribly slow, with no audio.  The exported file from Adobe Premiere Elements plays fine on Real Player.
I have tried a host of different setting in Adobe (H264 and MPEG4 encoders, frame size, max bit rate) all to no avail.  Perhaps I am missing a critical setting.  I think the problem is somewhere in Adobe Premiere because I have been successful in using Full Video Converter Free 9 program to produce MPG4 files and they have played back fine through Roksbox and Roku2.
    Any suggestions very appreciated.

To find the codec details,  use the programs below
    For PC
    http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ or
    http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en
    For Mac

It would SEEM that your output file has "something" that does not match the file that works... so use the above to find out the details of the file that works, and set your PreEl output to match

  • Timelime playback problems in CS4

After several months editing on a CS4 project with three sequences, at first randomly, and now everytime Iopen the project file and hit playback it takes several seconds for either clips in the source monitor or sequences on the timeline to playback. I have followed several of the standard troubleshooting ideas: cleaning the media cache, saving the project file into a new one, disabling start up and services, The project is pretty straightforward. Fourteen minutes, straight cuts and few dissloves, no GPU effects, a few SLO MOS and some color correction. As a test recently started a new project with eight or ten clips where the system worked perfectly but when opened the next day had the same delayed start problem. As usual, working on a deadline and would appreciate any suggestions.
    System Specs;
    MS XT Pro
    Gigabyte EP45-UDER board
Intel 1.67 Core 2 Quad CPU
    Invidia F 540 GPU
    WD 120 C drive
    Two 250 gig data drives
    4gig RAM

Sorry a typo in the system specs should be:
2.67 Intel Core 2 Quad CPU
    And of course....it's TIMELINE....not LIME....yikes jc

  • Disabling Blackmagic Card Playback in PPro CS4

I am trying to work in Premiere Pro CS4 using footage that I captured from the Blackmagic Intensity Pro card. The timeline is playing on my external device and no matter how times I change the Player and Audio settings, it continues to play audio through the device. It will not play in Premiere at all. Not through speakers nor headphones. Even if I unplug the external monitor from the Intensity Card, it still will not play audio in Premiere.
It plays the source monitor audio through the computer but any playback done in the Timeline doesn't. Please help me, I am so confused.

I created a new sequence using the standard Premiere Pro NTSC settings and copy everything over. It works. I didn't realize that I was creating Blackmagic sequences. I'm going to test it out with some other projects I was having problems with.
Thanks a bunch. This was driving me nuts.

  • Why does Adobe Premiere CS6 slow playback after importing some audio?

    Adobe Premiere CS6.0 v6.0.2
    Mac Pro:
    1, 4 core - 3.2ghz CPU
    16gb ram (4 sticks of 4gb @ 1066 MHz)
1 Tb dive with OS/Apps on
    2Tb 7200 RPM media drive
    ATI Radeon HD 5770
    Sequence:
    30Fps
    1920x1080
    Media:
mostly .MFX files from a Canon XF100 however these clips commonly play nice with Premiere.
    Issue:
After importing some audio clips (.wav/.mp3, possibly other extensions) to the timeline on occasion the video playback will become choppy and the audio will slow down 3% creating any voices in the video to become deeper and slows down.  Choppy video playback as well.  The problem is very annoying but  it can be temporarily fixed with a computer restart but it will come back.
    Things to note:
Creating a rendered ID (Exporting the movie out to a .mov) the slowed choppy video does not appear in the final movie.
    Temp. Solution:
The only way I can fix this problem is by restarting the computer.  Simply restarting Adobe Premiere and closing any non-essential applications does not fix the problem.
Any ideas on how to fix this are much apperciated.

Try converting your MP3 to AIFF ,QT or something else Macs like. See if that helps.

  • Delayed playback in Soundbooth CS4

I'm using Soundbooth (CS4) on a Windows XP machine. Editing in single track mode is fine. I'm working on a large multitrack project with about 90 small files associated with the ASND file. Ultimatley, I'm creating a one hour radio documentary and I will be adding all my voice tracks to this mix.
When I press the space bar or click the "play" button I wait up to 5 seconds before playback actually begins. This happens even if I have just booted up my computer and I have no other applications running. I have shut down my automatic back-up to free up system resources, but the problem persists.
What should I try next? Is there some other/better way to build a large audio project?
    Thanks,
    Amy

_durin_-->I've read countless threads on this forum where your expertise in Soundbooth have helped innumerable frustrated Adobe patrons. You're a talented problem solver and I thank you for recommendations. However, those files don't exist on my computer--either visible or hidden. I've checked.
Here is how I solved my problem and regained the power of Premiere and Soundbooth CS4 for my MacBook Pro that recently had a new hard drive installed.
I went to the Apple store and inquired about some issues with permissions. The only option they could offer me was to run a Disk Utility unit on my new hard drive to check for conflicting permissions. After ten minutes of investigation, no conflicts found, and a restart I opened both Premiere and Soundbooth CS4. To my surprise I could import and playback audio and video just fine.
This was two days ago and I have yet to encounter the problem since then.
A success with a different solution to this persistent and troublesome problem.
