Slow previews and renders

I'm getting very choppy previews in my PPCS4 project. The effect that is causing difficulties is RGB Curves. I am previewing in Draft Quality. Is this normal? My system specs are as follows
Video Card: GeForce 260 896MB 216 core
RAM: 4 GB OCZ DDR2-800 RAM
CPU: P4-D 3.2ghz
Mobo: ASUS P5W DH Deluxe
I think part of the problem is that the footage I was given to cut was HDV, which was captured to .MOV files.
As well, rendering takes a very very long time it seems. It takes well over 1.5 hrs to render a 8 minute clip in H.264 on the 720P preset (@ 4kbps bitrate). It seems like my GPU should be taking most of the load, but under render, my CPU is maxed out at 99%.
I am running the newest CS4 updates.
Does anyone have any ideas or insight?
Thank you for you time!

What would you suggest? A new CPU? I was thinking of getting a Q6600.

  • After Effects CC Crashing Itself and Computer During Previews and Rendering

After several attempts to render a video in After Effects CC (have also tried on CS6) and it crashing either itself or my entire computer, I have uninstalled and reinstalled all of my Adobe applications deleting the preferences while I was at it. After reinstall, I am still coming across the same problem. Quicktime is installed as well. The problem occurs at different times when I'm scrubbing a video, RAM previewing, and rendering. I have tried rendering with "Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously" on and off. It has worked on Draft Settings for rendering before, but now that isn't even working. The information for my system and other needed info is below:
After Effects CC 12.2.1.5 & (latest update, I believe)
    Source Footage: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC
    Classic 3D
    Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit
    CPU: Intel Core i7-3770K @ 3.50 GHz

    Cache Settings:
Memory and Multiprocessing Preferences: (I have tried numerous setups)
    Render Settings:
    Output Module Settings:

Well everything worked on my other computer, though slower. Since it seems to be the hardware causing the issues, could someone point me in the right direction as to which component is causing it? My log file is at the link below:

I am getting these strange artifacts on my previews and renders in PP Cs6. The footage is proresHQ. I have attempting adjusting every setting I know and doing a clean reinstall of PP. Any ideas?

    Hi NoxPhoenix,
Have you updated your GPU drivers lately? Try that.
    Thanks,

  • Caching, SSD's, improving RAM preview and rendering in After Effects CC

I've read a few posts and looked at some of the optimising After Effects for performance posts but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on settings for helping getting the best performance out of After Effects for my setup. I'm like to be able to explore more advanced effects like Trapcode and things like that but for them to preview and render as quickly as I can... as I'm sure we all do.
I have a 12 Core Mac Pro 2012 with 64GB RAM, a SSD that I use just for the system, a 4TH HDD for all my files and projects and 2 new SSD's that I installed today that I thought I would use as a cache disk and and a disk for my renders.
I decided this based on these guidelines that I found:
My Media and disk cache settings:
If I set the Conformed media disk as another disk separate from my cache is that good for rendering and previews?
My memory and multiprocessing details are as follows:
    Installed RAM: 64.00 GB
    Current RAM Usage: 3.26 GB
    Allowed RAM Usage: 48.00 GB
    Process ID
    Application Name
    Min Needed Memory
    Max Usable Memory
    Max Allowed Memory
    Current Memory
    Current Priority
    548
    After Effects
    0.40
    64.00
    48.00
    3.26
    1 - High
Video preview, I'm not entirely sure what this is for, can anyone explain please?
I've only just discovered the Cache Work Area in background option shown here:
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-after-effects-cs6/global-performance-cache/
    That's going to help massively!
Just how much faster would things run with a new graphics card installed? Say a Nvidia Quadro K5000 for Mac? Is a GPU it worth investing in?
Current I just have this setup:
    ATI Radeon HD 5770:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 5770
      Type: GPU
      Bus: PCIe
      Slot: Slot-1
      PCIe Lane Width: x16
      VRAM (Total): 1024 MB
      Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
      Device ID: 0x68b8
      Revision ID: 0x0000
      ROM Revision: 113-C0160C-155
      EFI Driver Version: 01.00.436
    LED Cinema Display:
      Display Type: LCD
      Resolution: 2560 x 1440
      Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
      Main Display: Yes
      Mirror: Off
      Online: Yes
      Rotation: Supported

So, any tips that people think might help me speed things up and get the best out of After Effects CC would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Preview and rendered video has distortion

    Hi,
I have scoured this forum but can't seem to find my exact problem. I am getting very jerky playback (which I have seen in other posts) but mine is getting this odd green distortion too. The distorion seems to happen the exact same place every time in the preview and the rendered video. Last week this problem was occuring so I went and updated Quicktime and deleted my media cache in Premiere. Something seemed to help... for a while. Now the problem is back and worse than ever.
Below is a screen shot of what I mean... Any ideas would be greating appreciated.

    Thank you Ann & Jim!
First, let me say you got me working. It was the video driver.
I did think of this before, but I went to Device Manager (Win7) and checked for driver updates there. There were none. But becuase you mentioned it, I pushed a little harder by going to Lenovo's site and downloading the latest drivers from there, not knowing if it's what I already have... It worked like a champ! Video looks pristine again.
Thank you, and please pardon my bone-headedness.
Just for giggles, I'm including my system specs in case it can help the next guy somehow.

  • Previews and Renders

So, all the documentation tells me never to use previews when exporting because it will degrade quality.
My previews are always set either to Uncompressed 10 bit or ProRez HQ, so is Premiere somehow down-rezing my footage on export to lower than either of those codecs???
Seems strange to me to claim "never use previews when exporting" when it all depends on how you have your preview settings set.

I guess the documentation is a little misleading, or confusing.
Yep. The documentation mostly addresses the general case, where the preview codec is set to MPEG2 for rendering fast preview. With a production codec set for rendering preview it is safe using preview files for final render. My testing in After Effects, when AE project is set to 32 bit, working space is linearised, all rendered preview, final renders with and without using rendered preview files are dropped into the same comp and the blending mode of all layers is set to 'Difference', results in pure black solid no matter which pair of files I compare.
However, rendering preview with a production codec takes much (or, depending on a spec, maybe not so much) longer - that is the trade off, 'cos you may need to render preview several times while editing, whereas final rendering is typically done just once.
Does use Max bit depth, and Max render quality actually do anything in CS6?
In my understanding enabling 'Maximum Bit Depth' in Sequence Settings is more or less like setting working space into 32 bit. Ticking 'Maximum Bit Depth' in the Export Settings dialog enables to render at higher bit depth, if chosen codec allows to do that. For mor details see this The Video Road blogpost - Steve Hoeg gives quite detailed explanation on the 'Maximum Bit Depth' at the end of the article.
See also this discussion about 'Maximum Render Quality'.

  • RAM previewing and rendering not working correctly

    Hi,
Today I was just about finished editing a video on CS6 and then when I'm about to add the last effect and render it it stuffs up on me:(. What happens is that while RAM previewing at some point during the loading of the preview it will stop loading, It will then proceed to play the ram preview on loop and when I press a button to stop it a small box pops up in the centre of my screen and the ram preview bar to show what has loaded (the one which shows green for parts that are loaded and blue for cached) turns black and sometimes other parts of after effects turn black. This has happened before and I fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling After Effects about 6 times. I would do that this time though I would like to know the cause of it and any possible fixes as it is quite irritating. Another thing that may be happening is the RAM usage is slowly filling as I render. This has happened before on my laptop and I did not manage to fix it though it was not related to the first issue that time. The last time when it happened on my laptop the RAM usage eventually filled up to 100% and it would no longer render. I am not sure if it is happening this time as it is still currently rendering though I will update the thread if it does. Finally my render is going very slowly, I am not sure if this issue is realted to any of the above or if it is just the effects I am using though. My memory and multiprocessing settings are using 6 cores of 7 with 2 GB of ram allocated to each with multiprocessing on. My ram allocated for other programs is 6GB. To fix these Issues so far I have tried clearing the cache, purging the memory and image cache, restarting  my computer and reinstalling after effects. My specs are:
    i7 4770k non overclocked
    GTX 780
    G.Skill Ripjaws Z 2133mhz 32GB
    Samsung 840 pro
    Seagate Barracuda
    MSI Z87-G45
    H100i cooler
    Any reply is appreciated
    Thanks in advance
    Sam

How much experience do you have with AE? Ram preview can be lengthened by adjusting the resolution of the composition window, different parts of the project can be previewed using the work area, and preview length and render time are both a function of composition frame size. Complex, memory intensive effects like particle systems will reduce the render time and the length of a ram preview. Without knowing the details of your composition it's hard to say if you are running into a bug, running out of resources, or experiencing normal behavior.

  • Pro CC stops suddenly stops showing video, instead previews and renders a black screen

Hi, I've been working on a video project for a few days now, and then suddenly, this morning, when I opened Premiere, all of my video was shown as black, and also rendered as black. All video files are AVI files generated by litecam HD, they are all at 30 fps, and all had been working mostly fine until today (there were a few incidents of premiere messing up the speed of a clip/showing a glitch in the clip that didn't exist in the original). None of the clips have audio, I have added a song on one audio track, which still works. I looked around online and decided to try deleting the PEK files in case they had been corrupted, but adobe hasn't remade them. I've tried importing the video into a new project, but the video is still displayed in the preview as black. I'm at a total loss and getting pretty pissed off at premiere right now. I do NOT want to have to remake this whole sequence from scratch.
Computer info, in case it's relevant:
    i7 quad 2.7 GHz
    24 GB RAM
Plenty of space on my SSD
    Nvidia quadro K2000M

Update to original post: Premiere now won't play the avi files in question in any project, or any sequence. I'm trying some other encoders to see if that's the cause. Original encoder was Microsoft Mpeg-4 V3.

  • Preview and Rendering Chopping

    Hi
When I drag the clip from the list on the left to the left preview screen, the video plays fine. When I drag it into the timeline and play it on the right preview screen, the video seems choppy and it seems like frames repeat or skip randomly. I thought this was only when I preview it but when I export it it does the same thing. I tried rendering (changing the little red line into a green one) the video and it still seems choppy... please help!

  • Previewing and rendering

I am new to mac and to FCE. Just starting first major project. Lots of questions. Most pressing is: Can I preview a sequence without having to render it. On the old i-movie and other non mac video editing software, it has always been simple. Just move the play head to the beginning of the time line and click play,to see how it looks so far. Surely this must be possible on FCE? Am I missing something obvious? If so, can somebody tell me? Thanks, Mike

    Thanks Al
I got over the beeping by recapturing video from camera (it's tape based) rather than using clips previously captured and stored on a seperate hard drive. I had captured using a different pc (windows) and not on FCE. This is better anyway, am now being smarter about what I capture, editing it a bit on the way in, rather than dumping it all on the HD and sorting it later. Saves wasting HD space,of course. I think this means the question is answered. I do have another, but I will start a new topic for that. Thanks again.
    All best

  • Nvidia GTX 980 Slow Playback and Rendering on 36 Core Dual Xeon

I have a Dual Xeon e5 2699 v3 machine (18 cores per CPU; 36 physical; 72 Logical).  I am processing Red Dragon footage at 6K resolution and 60 Frames per Second.  I have a Red Rocket-X card as well as Four (4) GTX-980 Nvidia GPUs.  When I try to use the Mercury Playback engine the performance is pitiful.  When I select CPU/Software only I get over 120 fps.  The Adobe CC software ONLY uses One of the Two CPUs installed on the system at any one time, it is like it doesn't see the other CPU even though Windows acknowledges that both are there and working (Cinema 4D and Cinebench use all 72 logical cores and will max them all out).  However, even with the Adobe CC Software only seeing 1 of 2 CPUs, the CPU playback is still way faster than the Mercury Playback/CUDA version.  This makes no sense to me sense the GTX-980s are the fastest/newest cards from Nvidia.  I have read that Premiere CC will only use one GPU for playback but will use multiple cards for renders.  HOWEVER, when rendering GPU-z says that each of my cards is working at less than 25% of capacity.  The rest of the system is NOT the bottle neck, I have 256Gb of DDR4 RAM, along with 12-1Tb SSDs attached to a 12 Channel 12Gb/s e-SATA card with 8Gb of RAM on the card.  I am getting sustained transfers on the RAID of over 2 Gigabytes per second.
I have invested a lot in this machine in an effort to save rendering time.... Adobe's recommendation for multiple CPUs and Multiple Graphics cards don't seem to matter as my render times are no faster than they were using FCP-X on a 2010 12 core MacPro Tower.
I hope it is just a driver or programming issue that relates to the 2699's and the GTX980 being so new???
    Any Help would be appreciated,
    Michael

    Bill,
Thank you for making the time.  I followed your instructions, great little piece of software.  Here is a screen shot when I ran my test...
As you can see even on your test, only 1 CPU is being used by Premiere.  The results from the benchmark were uploaded under the computer name RedShredder (I use it to edit and render Red Dragon 6k footage).
The results from you output file are as follows:  "32","44","8","206",Premiere Version:, 8.2.0.65
I couldn't register at the site but will try again later.
My concern is that no matter what I do Premiere and the entire Creative Cloud ONLY see ONE CPU on my Dual Xeon system.  Sometimes it will run on the other one and you can force it to by changing the processor affinity selection but no matter what, even if you click all cores on both CPUs it will still pick one and just run on that processor.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Michael

  • 2 different nvidia cards raytracing and rendering

I currently have a GTX 950. I know this is not supported for raytraceing.
I have an additional slot for a PCI express card and I want to put in another less expensive card that is supported for raytracing both in the ram preview and rendering (if thats possible) . The second card would not be hooked up to any monitor, it would only be used to facilitate the raytracing aspect. Is this possible to do with after effects?
    Thanks!

I agree with Mylenium. If you're a CC subscriber, there is very little need for the ray-traced renderer since you have C4D included with AE ( details of CINEMA 4D integration with After Effects )
If you're not a CC subscriber, you would still be spending better money getting Element 3d (or ShapeShifter or Freeform Pro) than getting a GPU for accelerating the ray-traced renderer.

  • Updated to LR 5.4, images now importing extremely slow. After importing and rendering images are still very slow to go through and develop. No issues in LR 5.3 which was very fast.

After importing and rendering images are still very slow to go through and develop. No issues in LR 5.3 which was very fast. Canon,Nikon, Leica and Fuji files all rendering slow. iMac 2.9 ghz 16gb RAM OSX 10.8.5. Catalogs and images are kept on external drives. Drives running fine. Really need a fix on this since I'm norally imported and processing at least 4,000 images per LR Catalog. Is there way to revert back to 5.3? I can't use 5.4 is its current state. Thanks.

Download LR 5.3 and install it
By the way, lots of people have this complaint about LR 5.4, and the advice I give is to use LR 5.3 unless you need one of the new camera models supported by LR 5.4

  • PREVIEW and QUICKTIME slow to load in SNOW LEOPARD

I've just started having a problem (after years of working perfectly) where files are taking FOREVER (up to 30 seconds anyway) to load in both PREVIEW and QUICKTIME.
This occurs both when opening files fully with double-clicking - and when wanting to Preview by just pressing the space bar. I utilise the latter frequently to audition samples (as I work with music/Logic). This used to be an instantaneous process but can now take up to 30 seconds with the "Loading Preview" message before finally loading.
It seems to be happening with all files, irrespective of size or type (ie mp3/WAV/AIFF/MOV etc)
Very ocasionally - and apparently randomly - a file will load quickly.
I've tried reparing Permissions, running Disk Warrior, reinstalling Preview, uninstalling Perian, opening another User account (in case there was a software conflict of some kind), and cloning my System onto a brand new HD with lots of free space. But none of these have made any difference.
Anyone have any other ideas as to what this might be?
    Cheers in advance:)

    hey andy
yeah there definitely appears to be some kind of issue (with core audio?) when i check out Console as this happens.
i've looked at the subsequent diagnostic report but not sure how to interprete it.
wold it be useful to post it here?
    cheers

  • Preview and textedit slow/hangs

    Hi,
My preview and textedit are not functioning. The problem is as follows.
    - I boot my MBP2010, running ML 10.8.2
    - I open either preview or textedit app from finder or launchpad.
    - The app name pops up in the menu bar.
    - I get a rainbow twirly cursor.
That's it, i cannot use these apps which is extremely anoying.
If I open a picture or pdf, it loads preview, and it shows it after a minute or so.
This is not normal behaviour, i have installed a 3rd party SSD which is blazingly fast.
If i choose show all windows in preview from the dock, i apparently have tons of files open which i cannot quit nor open.
Textedit only shows an icon in my dock and doesnt respond. Not even to me yelling at it...
Also I have checked 'Close Windows when quiting an application' in System Settings > General after the issue occured.
After searching a bit on the internet, i have found 0 solutions explaining how to fix this issue in common English.
Repairing disc permissions doesnt solve anything. Someone also mentioned it could be related to aliases used by dropbox. I have dropbox.app installed but i don't understand how one app could completely destroy another one?
Others mentioned deleting files from ~/Library/Containers/com.Apple.Preview.
Apparently ~ means <Insert User Name>? I find this last particular sollution controversial and unclear as to which files should be deleted.
If anyone could please specify a sollution, I would be very grateful.
    Thank you in advance.

The fix is to reinstall ML by pressing r at boot and choosing reinstall mountain lion.
I still have my files and apps, so no biggie..
