Slow processor MBP 17 inch i7

long story: in the last 6 months, i have had 3 MBP 17inch i7 laptops, each one has been as slow and lethargic as the other, 2 of them with logic board issues, and none of them have been even close to the performance ability of my previous (2007) MBP 17inch model. that computer i had 3 years,  their 1.66 model which i upRammed to 4GB max, and later updated to a 7200rpm HD, and i have to say i ran it into the ground, working it in all conditions, almost 365 days a year, always using multiple programs at one time (usually about 10-12), including processor-sapping ones like photoshop CS5, capture one, and firefox (with usually about 20-30 windows open), and only restarting about 1 time per month or 3 weeks or so, and it was solid, and dependable,  and never blinked, and never crashed. in 3.5 years, i had the logic board replaced 2x, to be expected considering the thrashing i gave it, but other than that, it was a beast. those were the days :-/
this new model , for me, is a basket-case. the first model from B&H NY arrived (in brazil) with a faulty logic board, which was obvious from the beginning as it ran like a dog, was very slow, and had classic collage patterns appearing on the screen sometimes when i changed between images or programs.  i took it to Apple in london a few weeks later and they replaced it immediately, agreeing that the logic board was indeed stuffed. 2nd model, ran equally as slowly, consulted apple UK on numerous occasions via genius bar, and the service was great, and every attempt was made to speed things up, including complete manual reinstall (2x) of all my data and programs (leaving behind all unnecessary library files and possible problem-causing data), removing caches, disk warrier, disc utility, hardware tests, creating new user accounts, etc etc, but nothing, it still ran terribly slowly, and i documented many occasions on video to show them, where after only hours of use, or an increase in room temp, or opening 2 or 3 processor-intensive programs at once would send it into snail mode and render it almost useless unless i restarted it. and these are program crashes which i have never experienced on apple, and im talking about generic programs too, like text edit, safari, itunes etc, not just the imported ones like capture one or CS5......
so now they replced the 2nd one, and now im on the 3rd one.....same things. crashes, and totally unusable processor speeds. ive had this 2 months, and  after experiencing the same problems again from the start, i requested that they install the maximum RAM to 8GB for me, which they did, and while the performance is alot better, over the last 6 weeks it has degenrated back to about 60% how it was in the beginning. im in NY right now and the last few days have been warm, and this computer gets so hot, so quickly, and i dont even really hear the fans going inside, and that has added to the slow speed too. if i dont have  a  fan pointing at it, it just acts like a potato. and one thing i do notice, is that while im processing images in capture One (from RAW to tiff), the computer is rendered un-usable, so clearly this is a processor issue. processor monitoring by apple hasnt revealed anying out of the ordinary. so 3 geniuses, 3 laptops, and 6 months later, im still back at Atari speed and am now having logic board issues with this one too, where the collage pattern is coming back (ie. if i have 8 programs open, the screen will momentarily appear as a collage of all those 8 programs for 1/2 second, broken into hundreds of small squares, like an piece of art, either when i flick from one picture to another, or one program to another).
help. :-/ any ideas?

Talk to VirtualBox, they  have a full version with enterprise features that may enable VT-x.
Need I mention that Apple is a consumer products company?

  • N70: Very slow processor ?

Has someone else noticed what may feel like the effect of a very slow processor in N70-MusicEdition.
    Effect-1)
I noticed that the click-sound played after pressing the click-button for still image (@ 2MP) for N70-MusicEd, the actual snap is taken almost 1-2 seconds afterwards.
I shot about 10 photos of my very restless kid (as most 3yr olds are). Each time I had him pose, shot a snap, he ran, I only got the blurred image of him running away.
    Effect-2)
Screen refresh (with some momentary white banding) is quite noticable during mp3/aac playback.
Or, am I having some default setting which can be turned-off, or some fine-tuning possible to remove these apparent timing glitches ?
    - bd

    Hi,
Is there any way to speed up the N70? Mine is getting slower and slower, I have deleted all excess photos, have very few music files, virtually none in fact, and cannot figure out what is making it slow down, it is down right painful. Any suggestions?

  • IMovie editing slow while MBP connected to Plasma Screen

Am newbie to MBP and iMovie
I am using the MBP connected to the 42 inch Plasma screen. I am getting frequent and prolonged spinning ball while editing in iMovie.
The raw DV footage is stored on Glyph EHD connected to MBP by FireWire 800 cable.
Is the slow functionality and frequent appearance of spinning ball due to connection to Plasma screen ? Is it because the MBP is slowly accumulating more and more footage while building the movie project in iMovie on the MBP hard drive ?
There should be no accumulation of DV files on the MBP hard drive until which time as I decide to burn the movie. Yes, No ?
What sort of interface or accelorator is available for install between MBP and Plasma to overcome this problem since this is a great way to edit.
    Thanks

That's not good. Were you barefoot and on a concrete floor? Or touching something else with the hand that wasn't touching the Mac?
It sounds like there could be mis-wiring in the walls...like a crisscross of neutral and ground. You might invest in one of those inexpensive house wiring detectors that they sell at hardware stores and see if it shows a fault when plugged into the same outlet where the TV plugs in.

  • Yosemite slow on MBP late 2013, did several clean installs

I've got a MBP late 2013 which I upgraded from Mavericks to OS Yosemite. When I did it, the impact was bad: all applications and OS is slow, to write an email or to  open simple files have to wait more than 30 secs. i have read all the topics here, have done clean install several times with time machine restore of only apps.
Still MBP is slow, have done PRAM, MCC etc.
    how to solve this?

  • OS X Lion Screen Sharing Slow on MBP 13" (Early 2011)

    Hello All,
I've been cruising forums and various posts, but have not seen anything directly relating to the issue I'm having. I just upgraded all my Macs to Lion and when I screen share(SS) from my lion macs at work to my lion macs at home there has been a notable drop in performance.
Here's where it get's stupid though. I can screen share to my Mini with very little to no lag at all from my MacBook Air at work. The Mini is directly hooked to my  time capsule (2008,1TB). However, when I SS into my MBP 13" early 2011(wireless connection) the MBP becomes almost completely unresponsive or delayed to any change by 5+min.
I tried ss'ing into my mini and then from my mini to my MBP 13" and that was at least responsive, but obviously laggy. So what the frick man. Why can't I SS into my MBP from work? This was never an issue when all these macs were running 10.6.8.
I guess I should also mention that the Mini hasn't been able to update ARD 3.5 yet, because of a separate issue that I haven't gotten around to. Is it perhaps the ARD update that is screwing up my MBP13"?
    Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. I think it has to do with the 'server' computer. When I remotely control my other snow leopard computers, it is snappy. When I connect to my iMac running Lion, it is slow. The whole page blinks like it is rendering all text/images/backgrounds all the time. So it seems to be loading the entire frame. On the contrary, when remoted into a Snow Leopard machine, only the word or area that you are typing is blurry, then crisp as it renders. It doesn't try to reload the whole screen since you are only modifying a small portion of it.

  • Extremely Slow mid2012 MBP. 4.71gb page outs?

Hi guys. I use my MBP daily for design and illustration work. Generally I only run one program at a time, and that is either Illustrator, InDesign, or Photoshop. My 27" 2010 iMac at home can run all three programs at the same time with no issue whatsoever, but my MBP struggles with even opening one.
Lately, even on start up, chrome or safari take so long to open, they usually get stuck at the rainbow circle. No matter what is running, my computer seems to overheat within minutes and starts to lag, freeze, and sometimes even reboot itself.
It is near impossible to get any work done when I try to press an icon, and my mouse freezes on the way there.
I've been to my Apple store seven times, and all they seem to want to do is reinstall everything, but the problem persists.
Now, because of lack of transporation and time, I cannot go to the store until I absolutely need to get it fixed. I do have Apple care.
The last time the Apple store wiped out my computer and reinstalled everything, I asked them to remove Mavericks (it didn't cooperate with my school and works printer drivers), and it actually improved performance for quite some time.
I've also seen the colour flicker from a green tint, to a more grey/blue tint, and then it will return to normal after a few minutes or shutting the screen.
Here are my specs from EtreCheck.

  • Windows 8 slow on MBP Retina 15

i just got MBP retina 15 and installed windiws 7 pro on it via bootcamp and win was running smoothly. I then upgraded to windiws 8 pro and it stucks/freezes frequently like if i make a new folder or sometimes oopen ny location like c drive or my documents or my pictures it just stucks and waits and waits and then opens it. I then removed entire windiows and restored partition to mac os x and then installed windows 7 and upgraded to windows 8 but i am again having same problems ... its slow in response, not always but most of the time and the mouse pointer gets busy and busy and busy and finally opens the application .... from some other blogs i have tried this with on power and on battery but the result is same !! has anyone faced such an issue and how did it get solved ??

  • Slow Boot MBP 2012 SSD on 10.8.3 - Tried several fixes

    Hi,
    I have a MBP 2012, I upgrade it with Samsung SSD 830 256GB and 16GB RAM.
    Boot: 50 seconds
Shut down: 20-30 seconds (uncheck documents on iCloud preferences and seems to shut down on 3 to 5 seconds)
Since the begining I figure how to make it work properly.
I made a backup with SuperDuper! and later, after some time when I want to repair permissions I realize I have lost my Recovery HD, after some Google magic I reinstall ML and solve the problem.
Start up time was too slow, then I do some search and anfer SMC + PRAM (NVRAM) reset everything seems to work fine, for some time.
Every time slow boots and shut downs come back, I do more searchs and find some fixes, but those fixes dont work the sameway for everybody, even on same machines and dont last forever.
Uninstall Little Snitch, Clean Caches, Fonts, Uninstall Parallels, Do some vudu with Cocktail and Onyx, Reinstall Mountain Lion, Update my System to the last 10.8.3 with the Combo Update, Selected my boot drive on system preferences (I just have one disc on my mac, no Fusion Drive so I dont understand why I have ti try this but did it).
I repeat some of the fixes, but always the same result, Boot time always on 50 seconds.
After some research on forums I look at mi Console and found those under BOOT_TIME

Any clues to help me? I reported slow boots and shut downs on ML, hoping to see it solved some time on the near future, maybe on 10.8.4
This is the only thing "wrong" with my MBP, after boot is fast and love to work with it.
    Thanks.

Waiting for an answer I decided to start from RecoveryHD, delete my Macintosh HD and Reinstall Mountain Lion.
I have my data safe, I just have to copy my Documents and stuff and reinstall a bunch of apps if everything goes fine.
I would like to solve this other than have to do a Clean Reinstall.
Last night try to do a clean reinstall, but nothing change, still at 50 seconds boot.
Start to thinking if its something related to my disk. Seems to be the in the last firmware available for the SSD 830. TRIM is not enabled at this moment on my mac, and write & read speeds are fine.
    After last boot found this:
    26/04/13 13:28:09,338 root[109]: /usr/libexec/ntpd-wrapper: scutil key State:/Network/Global/DNS not present after 30 seconds
Google a little an then found this:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4070843?start=0&tstart=0 and decided to try a Hardware Test. The first Test ant fine in less than 5 minutes, now trying a complete test: After 75 minutes everything is fine. Hardware test OK.
I will continue updating this if I can fix it.

  • OS X Mountain Lion slowing down MBPs?

I have read many comments that the new OS will slow down ones computer. Specifically MacBook Pros. My MacBook Pro has a 2.4 GHz processor and a 4GB memory. Were I to update the OS would it bring my computer "to a crawl" ?

Correct, clean install is downloading Mountain Lion then wiping all file off the computer and starting fresh. Of course before doing any software update on any computer all your irreplaceable files should be backed up first. Time Machine works but I prefer to add to it using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to create a bootable USB drive just in case. The bootable drive could be used as a quick way to get your system back and recover your files to rebuild your system. You should research on how to properly back up and recover your files before you start. The beauty of iCloud is if you use it to sync Calendar, Contacts, Reminders, Notes and Safari bookmark they will be automatically restore once iCloud is signed in and activated on the new system.
Google "How to do a clean install of Mountain Lion" for many web sites with tutorials. Googgle can also tell you how to back up and recover various items such as Mail.

  • Slow processor performance with my s10 and 3d studio Max

    Hello all,
I have an s10 6 megs of ram  a Quadro FX 370 video card and a Quad core CPU Q6600 @2.4Ghz,
I run Vista home premium 64 bit, this is my home workstation. I am an animator and I use 3ds Max, my system at work is a Dell Optiplex 550 with a core 2 duo E6550 @ 2.33Ghz with 4 megs of ram and a Radeon X700 pro video card.
When I am working on my home system with 3dsMax it really struggles; it's sluggish it takes at least a minute to refresh after doing a small 512 x 512 render , my render times are if anything slower or the same
even though I've got a quad core at home and more memory. I've repeatedly scanned for viruses, malware etc.. The system comes up clean eveytime, I've uploaded the latest drivers for videocard - still no go.
My questions are these; With a quad core CPU and more memory shouldn't this system be faster than the one at work? If I want to upgrade my processor where can I take it ? Has any body else had this problem with 3ds Max 2009 64 bit and the s10. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Slow Macbook 13 inch early 2011

    Hello,
Recently I have been using my Macbook extensively.  I have noticed that it seems that everytime I open the lid of my macbook use it right from sleep mode it gets quite bogged down from going from sleep to actively using it.  The wait times are getting quite annoying and I don't use many programs or have many running (Pages, ITunes, Calender, and Mail).  Also my Hard Drive is not even close to full.  I currently just have the baseline model with no added memory or anything.  I am just curious is there any way to boost the time it takes to restore from sleeping mode, It will just have the pinwheel spinning and cannot do anything.  Hopefully there is some program that can see where my ram usage that will show why my computer is being bogged down.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities,
I too have a 13" MBP however I have the i7 model. I have found that when opening the lid it takes anywhere from three to eight seconds to fully resume normal use. I think that it may just be the fact that the HD has to start back up however I'm not certain, so don't quote me on that. My other theory is that OS X Lion is what is taking it so long to resume because it requires a password to come out of sleep. My Mac has not slowed down after about five seconds (on average) after sleep. After that pinwheel goes away within five seconds it resumes its normal speedy lifestyle. You can see how much memory is being used by opening the Activity Monitor app. How long does it take to resume your mac after sleep (seconds). And how long are your normal wait times. Knowing these times will help me better diagnose your problems.

  • Why do Macs have slower processors?

Have you noticed that many processors in PCs have faster clock speeds (gigahertz) than many in Macs? I have an iMac with only a 1.83 GHz processor. It seems like that sounds slow. The old Pentium 4 processors were faster. Is it a different scale, I think I heard that somewhere?

    UNIX-based
Beneath the easy-to-use interface and rich graphics of Mac OS X lies Darwin, an open source, UNIX-based foundation built on such technologies as mach and FreeBSD. With Tiger come significant enhancements to this UNIX foundation, including improvements to dual-processor support for increased performance when reading and writing files to disk and when using Mac OS X with NFS file servers.

  • Help Slow processor

Just fitted an XP 2600+ processor in my KT4V mother board updated my bios set the fsb to 166 multiplier on auto. It reads correctly as a 2600+ running at 2.09 Mhz but when i benchmark it using 3d mark 2003 the cpu score comes out at 165 which is slower than the 1.4 i used to have in there, if any one has any suggestions to bring this back up to speed it would be extremly helpfull. Have changed nothing except processor

Ok it seems that my 400 watt power supply is actully a 350 here is the reading from the top of the power supply

  • Preview app freezing and slowing down MBP

Since I updated to OS Mavericks my preview app has not been functioning properly. When the app is open when viewing PDFs a window (accompanied by a progress bar) pops up quite frequently that says "Saving changes... '#' documents remaining", with the # sign representing any number of documets. Often, the number of documents "remaining to be saved" progressively increases from 1 to 8 or so, despite there being only one document open. While the app is doing these "auto saves" my computer is slowed down significantly and while these interuptions occur I am usually unable to do anything else.
I will also add that the size of the PDF files that I view are rather large, on average 70-80 MB, although I'm not sure if that is the reason for the issue because before I updated to Mavericks I didn't have this problem. And the problem does also seem to occur with smaller sized files as well.
My computer usage is usually minimal when this occurs, typically only Safari is open in the background. I was advised to reset my SMC, which I did, but the problem is still occurring. Any additional advice or solutions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Update: The Preview app is using a lot of memory and I don't know why.
With activity monitor on, I notice that the memory usage for the app spikes considerably when viewing PDFs, especially when I scroll, exactly the same problem as you, loveceratops. When a PDF is initially openend, the activity monitor shows memory usage around 50 MB, but when I scroll within the PDF the memory usage shoots all the way up to 500 or 600 MB. It's at this point that the glitches preciptating in Preview begin to occur.
I've tried deleting/recreating the preview app's ".plist" files in the "Preferences" and "Containers" folders, but that has not solved the issue. I want to try to reinstall Preview, and I just might, but I'm also considering reinstalling OS Mavericks since that may be easier; but I'm concerned that the same problem would still keep happening since I'd be recovering all my files from Time Machine after the reinstall.
Any help solving this issue would be much appreciated, thanks in advance. This is a very frustrating problem.
