Slow reading speed on Time Capsule disk

I get terribly slow TC disk speed when measured with Black Magic tool using Wifi and even slower on Ethernet.
I get low speeds on Wifi but even lower speeds on Ethernet connection. See attached pics below.
Wifi:
My TC is on Wifi using N network and 5ghz and it seems the speed I get over the Wifi is reasonable. Based on Pondini blog, here are approximate speeds for USB, ethernet and Wifi:
http://pondini.org/TM/29.html
Pondini's figures don't seem to take into consideration a 5Ghz Wifi connection, which should be about 2x faster than 2.4ghz (144Mbps vs 300Mbps). So I am assuming the transfer would be around 20-40 GB per hour which was roughly what I experienced when doing testing using file transfers (and slightly below USB 2.0). TC will not operate on this maximum speed as there are other factors, such as overhead, internet connection and TC hardware itself.
It seems to be reasonable, it takes me about 4-6 hours to backup 100GB Time Machine backup. Is this amount of time normal? I assume yes.
Ethernet:
Recently I needed to restore a file from TimeMachine. I started to browse but the browsing using the TimeMachine app was horribly slow. So I thought using Ethernet cable instead of Wifi would make things better. No way. So I tested the speed of the hard drive using the Black Magic tool and below is what I get - the speed of Reading on Ethernet is much slower than Wifi.
If I interpret the numbers correctly, the Black Magic tool shows MB/s, in which case 11-15MB/s should be about 80-120 mbps, which is roughly the G speed on Wifi and roughly about 50% of the maximum speed of N network?
Are these calculations correct?
If these numbers are correct, the results are acceptable, as I would not expect the Time Capsule Hard Disk to reach the maximum speeds provided through the Ethernet or Wifi connection.
However, what concerns me is why is the reading speed through Ethernet so slow. It's only 3.5 MB/s.
Activity monitor is not much help, it's hard to figure out where is the issue.
My Setup:
MacBook 2012, Mavericks 10.9.4, Time Capsule 2012, Ethernet, Wifi N 5Ghz. No other machines or appliances active. Internet and network seems to operate fine, no issues.
This is ETHERNET:
THIS IS WIFI:

OSX:
Yes there are many issues with Mavericks, it almost feels like OSX 11.0 and not 10.9.5 from the bugginess. I can't speak for how the system is changing from inside but most of it doesn't affect me, so it's mostly the annoying things that pop up and the good things that just go away because Apple keep "dummy-fying" the OS.
I was considering downgrade to Snow Leopard couple of months back but it would not support the hardware. It wasn't so much editing the supported hardware list to installation but the drivers are missing for newer hardware in SL. I used to mess around with Windows but I am not ready to mess OSX yet. I still keep Snow Leopard on one of my machines and I always like to go back to it as it feels consistent and light.
Speed:
You found the reason.
1. Yes I turned off wireless and ethernet when testing one or the other.
2. Ethernet is 100baseTX and grayed out.. because..
3. I should have realized it's because I use USB ethernet Apple adapter. But given the USB has 480Mbs speed, after taking into account some overhead, the speed should still be higher than Wifi. Or maybe not.. I made assumption it should be fast enough so I didn't even consider that could be bottleneck on it's own.
TC:
If your TC is 2012 then it is Gen4.. .... recommend you downgrade the firmware to 7.6.1.....
Yes, I upgraded to latest firmware. Yes, it's TC Gen 4. By mistake, I didn't know there are issues. But soon I realized for instance Apple has removed the setting in Airport to force "N" radio for network only. To simplify things, you get now combined N, B, G whether you like it or now. Now things may interfere with your other networks and if you happen to use non-apple clients connecting to AirPort, you end up with hodge-podge N and B/G connectivity that slows down the network even more.
If Apple releases the BASH update, it probably needs to be upgraded anyways? I assume their software on Airport is also Unix / Linux flavour?

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I'd use the advice in this thread to investigate the signal and noise levels that your MacBook Pro sees:

If it sees a weak signal or a lot of noise, that could explain the speed problem.

  • Slow transfer speed on time capsule

First of all im new to this whole MAC thing. I have a new IMac that can communicate with an attached Time Capsule. I can send files to and from the Time Capsule on the IMac at a decent rate.
I am having trouble with the Win & PC that I have also got on the same network. It can see the Time Capsule OK and can also send files to and get files from the Time Capsule OK, but the speed at which it does so is very slow as compared to the MAC.
I am getting about 2.5 MB/sec. I have a wireless N card on the WIN machine and by all apparent standards WIN shows the wireless connection at 802.11N with all signal bars with a connection speed of 144Mbps
Is there something I can do to speed this up ?
    Thank you, Erich

The mac is at 195 - 250 on a regular basis.
To get that speed the mac is connecting on the 5ghz band.. The Mac also auto swaps bands.. PC cannot do that.
Apple restrict 2.4ghz to max 150mbps which will be 130 or 144mbps you are getting.
The best idea is to force the TC to give out different names for the two bands.. in the wireless setup give 5ghz a different name.. force the PC to join 5ghz.
The  connection over 5Ghz is at a solid 300 on the PC and 450 on the Mac. Again, why cant they both connect at the same if they are using the same standards?
They are not connecting at the same standard.. PC is using a 300mbps card .. if you want 450mbps you will have to buy a compliant 450mbps card. This is new and really not part of the N standard.
And I tried to change the wireless channel on the PC USB adaptor but cant find an option for that under wireless properties. There are a lot of things to change, just not that.
You change channel on Tx.. not the Rx.. ie the host not the client.. all changes to wireless channels are made on the TC.

  • Time Capsule disk access SLOW!   2TB - Dual band

I have a Time Capsule (2TB, Dual Band, Firmare at 7.4.2)
Its been working like a dream, backing up 3 Macs for the last 8 months.
I also use it for connecting two or three other disks via USB and then making those accessible over the LAN, and there is also about 100GB of data on the Time capsule disk itself that i use as a dump for files so i can get to them from anywhere on my LAN.
Lately I started to notice EXTREMELY slow disk access, even when i am connected via ethernet (1000 base) - and equally when I am connected via wifi (n)
for example, copying over a 2Mb photo can take minutes when it should take seconds.
i've been trying to figure out whats going on here for a while and so i checked out the sizes of the backup files.. the sparseimages that time machine creates.
one of them was nearly 1TB, while another was around 500GB and the other was around 120GB
that plus my data meant there was only about 300GB free on the 2TB disk.
I have a feeling the slowness could be down to extreme fragmentation of the drive... ??
so i decided to dump the backup files and copy off my other data and do a erase of the disk and start again.. but get this.. i can't even delete the 1TB file ! I have been trying for about 3 days now and it just will not delete.. i get the Deleting msg box and it just sits there, literally ALL night...
i know it isn't just hanging on the Mac (10.6.4) because deleting the other two images also took a long time (but not this long!)
i can't just wipe the disk now because i can't get my other data off either.. I have tried copying it over the network and onto a USB disk connected directly to the Time Capsule, but 3 days later and i'm still copying files..
to put some context into this, I copied over 1.8Gb today and it took about 4 hours...
has anyone had this problem before?? what on earth is going on?? is it down to fragmentation, or something else?? the TC has been working fine up until a few weeks ago when i started to notice slow speed.
    any ideas ?
    thanks
    Adam

if anyone ever has this issue ....
it must have been EXTREME fragmentation. I bought another 2TB external disk, connected it to the TC, did a complete archive, which took around 24 hours... then i wiped the TC and put stuff back... it now works fine again...

  • Time Capsule Disk is very slow

    Hello,
I'm using 10.8.2 and I just bought a Time Capsule 2TB for my backups.
I have tried to use Time Machine to backup my data (about 200GB) via our wifi network. My MBP (Retina mid 2012) stands at a distance of 2 meters from the Time Capsule.
It took about 16 hours and at 90% it crashed.
After that I used Carbon Copy Cloner to backup my data manually. I think I will go on with this methode, because I will have instant access to my data.
CCC did the backup a bit faster (about 12-13 hours). Copying other files to the Time Capsule Disk is also slow (about 7-8 GB per hour). Navigating is also slow.
I turned off Spotlight completely without a difference in copying speed.
I think (and I hope) this Time Capsule disk could be faster. Is this a bug? Are there workarounds?
    Thanks a lot!

-To sum up things: The setting "DHCP + NAT" delivers fast copying speeds
Yes. You will eliminate the backroute to the fiber modem or maybe even back to your ISP - depending on their setup.
The standard setting of the router is "DHCP + NAT" right?
Normally the standard setting is good enough to obtain an internet connection instantly (without filling in IP, DNS etc. manually).
Yes, you shoudl not have to fill in those details. Should work straight away as your MBP gets thos edetails automatically (yes?)
best to reset the Airport Extreme to defaults and connect it again using DHCP / NAT

  • Using AirPort Utility 5.3.1 or later to make a copy of the Time Capsule disk

Can I use AirPort Utility 5.3.1 or later to make a copies of specific folders within the Time Capsule disk?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1281
I see this link that explains how you can make an archive of TC files directly to an external USB (greatly increasing the speed), but I would like to:
    1) Chose only specific folders and
    2) If possible, have it do this daily.
I am trying to avoid dragging files directly through my Mac. I want specific files (instead of entire drive) to go from the TC > External USB

The archive ability which is available in all versions of the airport utility except the early v6, where it was dropped for a time, is designed to do a full backup of the TC. It cannot do what you want.
It cannot incrementally backup. Each time you press archive it will do the whole disk.
you cannot select folders to be included or excluded. The airport utility is an extremely limited functionality tool.
I am trying to avoid dragging files directly through my Mac. I want specific files (instead of entire drive) to go from the TC > External USB
A TC is a dumb as a board hard disk in a router. It has no controls like a real NAS would have, like backup with a auto controls and ability to deselect items or do incrementals.
So you have no choice whatsoever on a TC except for the files to be processed via the Mac.
Carbon Copy Cloner is one backup utility that can do the job. But it will be extremely slow if the material it is backing up has to be copied to the USB on the TC. Still if your changes are not great, it can be set to automatically do incremental backups on a daily basis.
It is much faster btw to have the USB plugged into the computer, so files do not have to be transferred back to the USB.. and this is x10 if you are using wireless.

  • How to health check time capsule disk

how to health check time capsule disk?
when doing time machine backuping and copying files into time capsule, it would take ages and very long time.. is the disk going to die soon?
is there anyway i can check the disk?
my time capsule is 2TB current model.
    please help.
    thank you.

Time Machine automatically checks the backups on the disk.  It does a quick check (a few seconds) before every backup, and periodically (every month, I think) does a much more thorough check.
You can do that yourself, by holding the Alt/Option key while selecting the TM icon in your menubar, and selecting Verify Backups.  That may take quite a while, if you have a lot of data.  I'd recommend connecting via Ethernet, as it will still be slow, but 2-3 times faster than WIFI.

  • Time Capsule disk cannot be mounted nor found by Time Machine

Suddenly Time Machine can't find my Time Capsule disk to back up to.
I've tried setting up my Time Capsule in various ways, even resetting to default factory settings.
My network seems to work fine and Time Capsule is shining brightly green, but clicking on Time Machine Preferences, it asks me to Choose Backup Disk. Clicking on that I just get an empty list. No disks. My only choice is to Set Up Time Capsule, which I've now done a couple of times without change. The Apple Support suggest a change to a shorter name... Needless to say, this is not the problem. Tried that too.
When I click on Manual Setup and check the Disks tab, there are no disks available there either.
Patience running on empty... Anyone found a solution to this or is my only option to shut off this expensive machine forever (seeing as it doesn't back up and that it's started to hum annoyingly loudly)?
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

My last resort was to connect my laptop and the time capsule with an usb cable.
The bad thing is that nothing happened. So for me this means heading back again to apple care so they tell me whats wrong with it (i just received it today from apple care because it stopped turning on 2 weeks ago and they didn't knew what was wrong with it).

  • Unable to delete files from Time Capsule disk

A while back I copied my user folder from my iMac on to my Time Capsule disk, which is mounted as a drive on my iMac's desktop. I now want to delete that copy. After some struggling with locked files I have managed to get it so that all I have left is a small hierarchy of folders containing no files. When I try to delete any of these folders, though, I get the error message: "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." Info says that I have read & write privileges to every folder in the hierachy.
Can anyone suggest a way that I can get rid of these few remaining folders? They are really bugging me!

Some of you are going to love this!!
Ok, after talking with someone at Apple, I was reminded of a simple Unix Command to do the job, even on Time Capsule. Here's what worked for me:
Time Capsule is connected to my Mac, via an Ethernet cable-- I don't know if this matters or not, maybe it will work over the wireless connection too, let me know!
You'll need to pull up Terminal in Applications > Utilities. It's a dangerous tool that Unix and Linux people use with skill all the time, but you have to be careful, cause it will cause permanent changes-- that is what I want here, of course. Just be extremely careful, ok? You have been warned.
    type "cd /Volumes"
    press Return
Now you're in the "Volumes" folder
type "ls" (as in the letter L)
    press Return
You should see your Time Capsule folder (whatever you named it)-- type "cd " and that particular name
Navigate till you can type "ls" and you can see the folder you are trying to delete.
Then, the command that worked for me is this:
(Please double check that "myFolderToDelete" is indeed the one that you want to delete!)
    sudo rm -rfd myFolderIWantToDelete
After a few seconds for the hard drive in the time capsule to spin up, it worked! Yea!
In fact, to be safe, if I were you, I would even go into Finder first and try to rename that folder, call it "myFolderToDelete" !!!
Why didn't I try this before? I've used Terminal, I should have thought of it before! bad nerd!
But the important thing is, problem solved .
A few things to note is that I was trying to delete a folder full of "Locked" files. If I wanted to delete several locked files that are not currently in a folder, I could make a new folder, and drag those files into it... now you have a folder you can delete. Just rename it "toBeDeleted" or something like that.
Finally, note that I am not currently using Time Machine (the automated backup program) with this Time Capsule, so I don't know if it will delete the Time Machine backup -- haven't tried that yet.
    Good Luck!

  • Time Capsule disk disconnect and reconnect every 5 minutes

This problem began with Airport Firmware 7.6, and has continued to perist with every subsequent firmware version.  Reverting to firmware version 7.5.2 eliminates the problem.  Running with the latest firmware version 7.6.3, on OS X 10.8.2, the Time Capsule disk is disconnected and reconnected every 5 minutes, and this is seen in the console log:

Welcome to the club.. there is a very long thread.. here.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3526741?tstart=0
There seems to be any number of factors.. where the solutions are little silly things..
Start from the end of the thread and work backwards as this has been ongoing for a long time.. and experience has improved.
What you are seeing btw is the change apple made in Lion and 7.6 to higher security version of AFP.. but it is a mess IMHO.. and has not worked at all well.

  • Cannot Access Time Capsule Disk from Boot Camp

    Hi,
I've set up a Time Capsule and I've been able to read and write from:
    1) My MacBook Pro and another MacBook
    2) A Windows XP (SP3) PC connected by Ethernet
3 )A Dell Laptop running Windows XP (wirelessly)
I can copy files to and from the disk and perform Time Machine Backups (on the Macs).
However, I have not been able to even connect to the disk (but I can use the internet normally) on the Time Capsule on my MacBook Pro Boot Camp Windows XP SP3. I can connect wirelessly and surf the net on the 5 Ghz (and 2.4 Ghz) (non-public/Guest Shared) network. (The password I entered to access the disk are the same on all machines listed, which was not confused with the Network Password) Does anyone face such a problem or know the cause/fix?
    Thank You in advance.

I use FileBrowser app. It works. Their latest version is much easier to configure than earlier versions. You need to turn file sharing on and SMB on your time capsule disk.
I use the time capsule disk to store a few files which I never want to be on my iPhone or iPad, but do want access to them. They are not backed up on the time capsule but since they also exist on my Mac, they are backed up from there.

Could that read " . . . could not access . . ."?  If so, try repairing your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If not, or if that doesn't help, see #A1 there. Use the TM Buddy widget it details to copy and post the messages here.

  • Lost time capsule disk

    Hello,
I was trying to make airport express allow me to connect to Sky anytime+.  Instead I have somehow lost the back up disk on my time capsule.  I watched some You tube jobs on making a bridge (?!) which at the time, five hours ago - seemed logical.  Up to today my time capsule worked beautifully but now I just have a flashing amber light and when I go to airport express it can't even find a disk.  Can anyone help me in but in dummy or idiot mode?  I am an absolute beginner when it comes to all the technical terms and a prat for even attempting to meddle in something I have no knowlege of.  Please help me!

    To the original poster,
so the internet comes into your place viat the Sky+ thing, which is supplying internet to your Time Capsule.  This is the way that it should be.  I remain confused about your reference to the Airport Express, but I don't think it really matters.  The Time Capsule is essentially the Airport Xtreme product for Wifi/Routing, plus a hard disk drive for backups...the software component on your computer may reference an Airport Express as being the Wifi/Routing part of your TC-just not sure why.
Back to your problems, you should verify that you are connected to your Time Capsule.  First lets check which WiFi connection you are using.  Click on the Airport Icon ))) at the top of your screen and make note of which wireless network name you are connected to.  Next, lets physically connect to the TC.  The easiest way to do this is to connect your computer to the back of the TC using an ethernet cable plugged into one of the ports on the back of the device-leave your WAN port plugged in to your Sky thing.
Next lets run your Airport Utility on the mac and locate your Time Capsule.  Use the MANUAL SETUP option to look into its configuration.  Click on the AIRPORT icon and then select WIRELESS and see what WiFi network name the TC is providing.  Does this one match the one you saw before?
If there is a mismatch then this should explain why you couldn't see your TC HDD.
Next, if you previously could see the Time Capsule Hard Disk Drive and it simply disappeared without making any changes to anything then I suppose it is possible that your TC's HDD died.  I think the easy way to check for this to connect to the TC as described above and continue using the AIRPORT UTILITY.  Go and click on DISKS and see if you can see a HDD listed under the heading TIME CAPSULE DISK.  If none show up then I think that says that your HDD died.
If your HDD is dead then it is fairly simple to replace.  You can also get a much larger disk than what you had previously and the cost should be well under $100 shipped to your door with the replacement taking only about 20 minutes and then several hours to get your initial Time Machine backup completed.
-please chime back with your results.

  • Time Machine says Time Capsule Disk unavailable

I have the exclamation point in the menubar icon and Time Machine says Time Capsule Disk unavailable even though I have backed up to it many times before.  I tried unpluging/plugging in the TC, but this did not solve the problem.  Any ideas?

However, I did have a problem periodically with computers not recognizing the TC disk before I had unclicked the "Enable file sharing" box, so I might still end up using your advice if this happens in the future.
There is a bug or several of them.. losing the disk is one thing the new 7.6.4 firmware is supposed to fix.. my deeply held suspicion is that Apple are using all of us as beta testers.. as lots of people are having trouble. But who knows it may finally fix this bug.. we are awaiting confirmation. ie people saying it is now fixed.. rather than since loading 7.6.4 my TC is now dead.. or disappeared .. or broken.. or no longer has wireless output.
Lets say maybe they fixed a bug.. and added some more.
The reason I had unchecked the "Enable file sharing" box is because I have Mountain Lion Server and wanted to use port mapping on the TC to point to my computer as a File Server.  To do this I went into Airport Utility and in Network pane tried to add File Sharing to the Port Settings.  However, this conflicted with the "Enable file sharing" box from the Disks pane.  Do you know of a way to have time machine backups to TC but also run a File Server from a computer networked with the TC using port mapping?  Thank you for any guidance.
You only need the ports forwarded to the server to get outside access.. ie remote wan access.. Did you have wan access to the TC checked.. that will cause a conflict with AFP .. since it cannot be forwarded to multiple destinations at once.
If you do not have WAN access checked then you should be able to check "enable file sharing" since that is local lan..
Try it and tell me what happens.. I have never tried the combo you are using.
I would try simply using a different method to access if that doesn't work.. eg BTMM should work fine to the Server without needing ports forwarded in the TC.. as long as the TC is the main router.. and this whole issue is only because the TC is the main router.
You can also do it with vpn.. which is more robust and more business/pro method to access a server remotely than AFP.
