Slow render speed: Mac Pro vs. Mac Mini (FCP Vs. FCE)

About a year ago I purchased a Mac mini (2gb ram, 2.0 dual core processor running OS 10.4) and using Final Cut Express. Understandable, rending and exporting took awhile.
A week ago I upgraded to a Mac Pro (10gb ram, 2.8 8-core processors running OS 10.5) and Final Cut Pro Studio 6. I assumed that I would see a rather dramatic decrease in in the time it takes to render (and to export).
However, the I am seeing virtually no difference whatsoever in rendering speed between the Mac mini running FCE and the Mac Pro running FCP. I'm very disappointed.
What gives? I'm editing virtually the same material and it's just as slow as before.
Any ideas anyone on what may be causing this?

I am generally using SD video imported (log and transfer) directly from the hard drive of a Sony HDR-SR12 camera, although I also use captured video from a Panasonic HVX200 camera. My "Easy Setup" setting has been DV-NTSC for both Final Cut Express and now Final Cut Studio.
The rendering that I'm talking about, for example, is when I put an effect on a video track that requires rendering before I can play it.
I'm then typically exporting the finished video to a Quick Time movie DV-NTSC setting.
Again, there is no improvement at all in the time it takes to render and export using the Mac PRO vs. the Mac mini using identical settings. I would think there should be a significant improvement.

Mac Pro using Mac Mini as Print Server

Hi all,
Mac Pro is wired to my network, Mac Mini is Airport connected.
I'd like to use Mac Mini as a Print Server without keyboard and mouse. I've installed OSXvnc-server on Mac Mini and Chicken of the VNC (CVNC) Client on Mac Pro.
Mac Pro's keyboard is azerty as was Mac Mini, it's impossible to loggin with Chicken of the VNC, password is not accepted, I connect an azerty keyboard to Mac Mini and I can loggin.
Typing on Mac Pro in Mac Mini TextEdit through CVNC give weird keyboard layout, not only azerty qwerty different layout.
In between my two Mac Mini there wasn't any problem using CVNC and the same server but Azerty Qwerty layout.
Is there any other solution to use Mac Mini as a print server ? What about using Desktop remote connection ?

Printers are HP Color LaserJet 2550L, HP Photosmart 8250 and Epson EPL-5900L.
I've changed the VNC Client from "Chicken of the VNC" to "VNCThing".
Now I can log in from Mac Pro using its Azerty Keyboard as Qwerty Keyboard.
Once logged in I've set Mac Mini Keyboard to "Extended (or Expanded ?) American" keyboard within System Preferences, with this option Mac Mini see the Mac Pro Keyboard as an Azerty layout...
I've connected two printers through USB2 Hub connected to Mac Mini and the third one direct onto Mac Mini USB port.
Back to Mac Pro "System Preferences Fax & Printers", "+", immediatly the 3 printers have been proposed, I've selected them and tested all: it works perfectly.
Mac Mini is set to "restart after power cut" and is connected for power onto a remoted control power distribution sockets, that means Mac Mini is starting and stopped when printers are powered on and off.
The sole small issue is that I can't find how to display Mac Mini GUI on Mac Pro at a better resolution than 1024 x 768.

Was the FCS on your old machine an upgrade? You will need to enter your original, full version serial first, and then you will be prompted for the upgrade serial number.

Slow render speed with new Mac Pro / NVIDIA 8800

I bought a new Mac Pro to replace a dual G5 because I have a number of Motion projects to finish quickly. My local dealer recommended the NVIDIA 8800 as it has 512 mb RAM (versus 128 on my old machine). I'm finding that the render time is worse than with the G5. I have yet to successfully render a 1 minute segment using Compressor (I've left it to run overnight several times with no success).
In Activity Monitor I'm seeing this message: CompressorTranscoder (Not Responding). But none of Batch Monitor, Compressor or Motion are unresponsive - not indicating any hung applications.
I've read that version 10.5.5 has compromised the NVIDIA card with Motion but haven't been able to get any reliable corroboration. As the Mac Pro shipped with 10.5.5 I can't really roll back to an earlier version.
Any advice? Anyone with similar experiences? I'm trying to render on a new iMac with 4 GB of RAM (with the ATI 2600 video card) but it doesn't seem to be working as it is an hour in and shows at least three more hours.

Make sure both computers are connected via FireWire or ThunderBolt before starting. If you connect the cables after Migration Assistant is already running, the source computer may not be properly detected.
Restart the source (original) Mac while pressing and holding the "T" key.
You can use ethernet too:
Make sure that the source Mac and target Macs are connected to the same network, either wirelessly or via Ethernet. (You can directly connect the two Macs via an Ethernet cable if both are Ethernet capable. To make MacBook Air Ethernet capable, connect using the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter.)

I want to change the System name and other settings such as app Store, calendars etc to my own profile as i still see his name come up all the time. i cannot update Apps on the store as it keeps asking me for his password.

Do you mean you have a Macbook Pro (laptop) versus a Mac Pro (desktop)?
You can back up the MBP, restart using Command+R to boot into the Mavericks Recovery HD, erase the Mactintosh HD and Reinstall OS X. Then you can go through setup and configure it with your information and Apple ID. Mavericks should not prompt you for an Apple ID when it goes through the install since that OS is free.
One thing you might want to consider is asking the previous owner to unregister the MBP from his Apple ID if he previously registered it. Then you can register it under your Apple ID.
The previous owner should have wiped it clean and reinstalled the OS that came pre-installed before selling it.

Mac OS X Server (Mac Pro or Mac mini)?

I'm thinking about updating my small office network with Mac OS X Server and using either my existing Mac Pro 3,1 as the server or replacing it with a Mac mini Server, which seems to be a lot more efficient in terms of energy use. Has anyone done this? If so, which option did you go with and why?

File sharing, and remote access are all low overhead usages. You can easily make use of a Mac mini. Backups can also be accommodate, unless you have many clients trying to access the drives at the same time with large TM backups.
As for using available CPU for offloading graphic work, that depends entirely on whatever graphic package you make use of, and if it has the ability to work with multiple Macs to share horsepower. Otherwise your could run the graphic app on the server and then remotely login to run the app, but you may not gain very much, a newer Mac desktop may have more computing power then a Mac Pro from 2008.
So, you could take advantage of the Mac Pro's ability to have 4 to 6 (replacing the DVDs) internal drives and have a pretty good file server and backup system. Or you could keep your NAS backup solution and use a Mac mini for the services.
If it was me, and I had the budget, I would pick up a Mac mini for this because of the reduced energy cost of running it. But I also would not hesitate to make use of the existing Mac Pro if I didn't want to put any cash out for this project at this time.

Yes, the adapter does seem to go all the way up to the plastic shell. And the the adapters and displays work fine when driven by either of my MacBook Pros. And there seems to be some sort of connection being made because when the adapter is unplugged, the monitor goes through its typical "I'm unplugged" test mode phases with color screens and so forth, but when I plug it in to the Mac Pro, it goes black.

Opinions requested: new Mac Pro versus Mac Pro 4,1?

I've been toodling along for eight years now with a 2006 Mac Pro 1,1. It continues to serve me well because I do not require blazing speed. The hairiest program I use is Eclipse, which is quite fast enough for my needs. Otherwise, I'm just doing browsing, email, word processing, and a limited amount of image processing -- nothing requiring much speed. Over the years, I have added to the machine; it now has 8 GB of RAM, an SSD, and two monitors.
But Apple has moved on past the limitations of my Mac Pro. I'm stuck at OS 10.7.5; my Mac can't handle the newer OS's. I've been willing to live with this for several years, but I know that the walls are closing in on me. Slowly, steadily, the software I use is being made obsolete by the continuing evolution of the platform. I know that I'll have to replace my Mac this year.
But I balk at the $3000 price tag for the new Mac Pro. Sheesh, I don't get much benefit in reducing my compile times from 0.5 seconds to 0.1 second. The only thing I really need is to be able to handle is Mavericks. (Well, it would be nice to get BlueTooth build in -- that stupid BlueTooth dongle I used drops the connection about once a day).
I'm not enthusiastic about getting an iMac. In the first place, I consider an SSD absolutely necessary, and from what I have found on the Internet, installing an SSD on an iMac is too tricky an operation for me to attempt, even though I build my first computer in 1977.
The option I find most tempting is to buy a 2009 Mac Pro (Nehalem) on eBay. They run around $1000 and provide everything I want. Why spend an extra $2,000 to get power that I don't need?
The Growling Gotcha with this option is the fact that these machines are already five years old and Apple is certain to render them obsolete at some point. But how long will that be? How many years of service can I expect from such a machine before I am forced to abandon it?
It's all guesswork, of course. Which is why I post my question here. I'd like to tap the collective wisdom of this community. Please opinionate.

Gag me with a spoon? I've been using and programming on Macs since May of 1984. Every time I've had to work with Windows, I puke. My wife occasionally asks my help with her Windows machine at work, and I always find the experience highly distasteful.

Slow net speed on MacBooks, not on Mini or iPad

Roadrunner ISP, Airport Extreme wireless router. If I run the TW speed test app on either my 2010 17" MacBook Pro or my wife's white-body MacBook (both running Mavericks) I see a download speed of only 3Mbps instead of the 20 my plan provides. If I run the speed test on my Mac Mini Server (also running Mavericks) or my iPad Air, both on the same network, I get the full 20 down.
The behavior on both laptops is the speed needle jumps up to the full 20 for a second or two, then ramps down until it settles at around 3 for the rest of the test, and the final average is around 3.
I've gone round and round with TW, replaced the cable modem, and also verified that this problem happens on the laptops if I Ethernet them directly into the model and bypass the Airport, so it's not a router/wi fi issue.
So, the question seems to be what is unique about the two laptops that causes them to be throttling the download speeds, while the desktop and the iPad are not?

Problem resolved. The test method I was using was the URL given to me by Time Warner for testing Roadrunner speeds. I just re-ran the tests using the service at speedtest dot net. That one shows I actually am getting proper download speeds on all my Macs. Clearly TW's service is flawed.

SpeedGrade render not using GPU, slow render speeds

I'm grading a fan-made feature-length film situated in this really obscure place called Middle Earth, and I'm currently rendering the final output.
Rendering speed has been really slow all along, so I decided to check upon GPU usage with a nVidiaInspector. It shows that GPU usage is between 0-5%. I'm able to get GPU usage to spike by switching to Monitor view (and scrubbing in timeline) instead of Output view in SpeedGrade. I understand that SpeedGrade is supposed to be GPU-accelerated throughout (not counting frame decompression made by codecs?), and now it seems that my CPU is doing all the lifting. CPU usage is around 100% all the time.
Render speed varies between 0.7 FPS and 6 FPS, which is far less than I expected, as I got reasonably fluid real-time previews all along the timeline when grading. Most typical clips have two primaries, two secondaries and a vingette mask primary on top. Total render time for 1 h 50 min timeline is expected around 12 to 18 hours.
My source material is 25 FPS 1080p CineForm AVI.
My output format is CineForm in Quicktime container (as AVI output with CineForm coded is not supported at present time) with automatic color calibration on, no audio, alpha discarded. Framing options are not in use (Full image (no proxy), 1:1 pixel aspect ratio, same size as proxy), and rendering is happeing at Online Quality.
My machine's specs are:
- Intel i5 2400S quad-core
- 16 GB of DDR3 RAM
- nVidia MSI GeForce GTX 470 with 1280 MB memory
- Windows 7, 64-bit
- SpeedGrade 6.0.4x25
- GeForce 310.70 drivers
Any input is appreciated.

Maybe due to cineform quicktime? Try other codecs to see what render speed you get.

I am trying to setup iCal syncing with Mobile Me on Mac Pro and Mac Pro Notebook. I have accounts added in for MobileMe and Gmail. Problem is that iCal does not appear as one of the Sync choices in the MobileMe sync window on either computer?

I am trying to sync iCal with all my computers and devices via MobileMe. I cannot sync iCal on my Mac Pro nor Mackbook Pro. I believe accounts to be setup properly BUT on both computers there is NO choice to select iCal among the choices in "Sync Menu" on the MobileMe window in System Preferences. Help?

If you delete individual messages they will be deleted from other accounts.
If you setup the accounts as IMAP (which is the default for MobileMe accounts) you can remove the accounts and the other users will still have the email.
Alternatively if you don't want to see the account in the other user go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts > MobileMe account > Advanced > remove the check mark for "enable account". This leaves the account and just turns it off so you don't see it and it doesn't send / receive messages.
Finally, you should be backing up your data for safekeeping so even if you did delete the account and the messages magically vanished you could restore them: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
