Slow running
My mac seems to be running quite slow. I know with pc's I can defragment, disk clean up, etc. Is there anything to do on my mac to make it run better and get rid of unecessary stuff? Also I have Photoshop Elements 3 and it suddenly stopped working. I used it and the next time I came back to my computer it won't open any files to work on, even the ones I have used in the program before. I have no idea what is going on.
Hi Hey Mac,
you should try some system maintenance: MacOS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance

E52 slow running - freeze - automatic restart
Hello
I have since one month a E52. Since last week I notice some time slow running or even no response then I am using the phone. If I press then for long time the home button all open programs are shown but also some strange entries these are:
-Main
-ShareCommServer
and others
During the slow running phase is the signal strength zero. I don't know if the search process causes the problem or if it is caused by the same thing that causes the slow responding.
With Y-Tasks I searched for the Main and ShareCommServer process but there is no such process.
I tried also a complete reset (*#7370#) but after short time (and a few program installations) I had the same problem again
So if anybody has any suggestion for solving the problem I would by very happy
Best regards
StefanTry and do a hard format.

NOTE: In front of the hash key ( #) there is also a STAR key that people often miss and state that the code does not work. 1.. *#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default ( you will not lose any data) Make sure you back up your data as you will lose all of it when you perform option 2 or 3 on this list. The default code for ALL operations listed here is 12345.
2.*#7370# - Reformat your phone (out of the box, tho keep in mind that most newer nokia phones at least n series, e series and s60 based phones have udp - user data preservation so not ALL data may be lost. still it is a good idea to always do a back up of your stuff.)
3. This you perform as a last resort. Nothing else is working.If the phone is not showing any activity, proceed with hard formatting , turn off your phone, hold the following buttons while pressing the power button. (the default code is 12345)
3. hard reset - hold the following buttons * (star key), 3 (number button) and talk/green key. turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen. once you feel the phone power up you can let go off the power button while still holding all three buttons ( for Nokia 5800XM - use the following buttons to do a hard reset, /GREEN/RED/CAMERA keys pressed all at once on power up. this will only work on 5800's that have firmware version 20... and up. ) For Nokia N97 (unofficial version but works) is SHIFT /SPACE BAR / BACKSPACE while holding the power button. Again do not let go until you see the handshake screen. If these codes are not working the only thing for you to do is contact your Nokia Care Center/Service for assistance.

Slow running Mac OS X 10.6
Hello all,
I am experiencing a pretty slow running Mac over the past couple of days. I have just about tried everything I can think of: Disk Utility which says everything is ok. I cleaned out the cache, history, and I only have 1 item in Login Items. I installed VirusBarrier X5 today (I'm in school and it's run by the school) but (thank God) no viruses/corrupted files were found. However, all that didn't improve the Mac's speed.
Any suggestions?
As you can see, I'm not using a lot of space - but I don't really know why the number of files is so high!?
Thanks,
Susanne

My mini mac is very slow running after I had th logic board replaced, any ideas on how to fix this issue?
Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

Does anyone know how to speed up a slow running iMac5?
We need more info.
What version of Mac OS?
What is the exact model number?
When did the slow down start?
Any recent software changes?
You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.
1) Check the amount of free space on your harddrive. You should have a several gigs free.
2) You should run disk utility
a) verify the disk
b) update your permissions.
3) Try a safe boot.
Shutdown your machine. Hold down the shift key. Poweron. Wait awhile Wait awhile while you harddrive
is being checked.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
4) You may want to run applejack to clean up your machine.
http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
a lot more ways to fix your Mac.
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html
Look at what is happening with your Mac when you run Activity Monitor.
Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor
1) Be sure you select all processes in the double arrow selection just be low the window title line.
2) Click on the CPU tab on the lower half of the window to see how much time you are using and if any applications are hogging the CPU.
3) Be sure the triangle in the CPU title is in the down position. This will list the processes from high to low.
You can gain some understanding of Activity Monitor by looking at it every once in a while. Look at the small graph.
Here is how I have my CPU display set up:
Do you need more cpu memory.
Click on System Memory to get statistics on memory usage. You should have some free memory.
The number to look at is page outs.
Mine is 13397. This means that some of my programs and data had to be written to disk because cpu memory filled up for a time. It means my programs ran a little slower than they could have. I could run fewer programs, deal with the slowness, or buy more memory. I'd say you want at least 512meg of memory for 10.4.
If the entry for entry for Page ins/outs is:
Page ins/outs: 29163/0
Notice I have 0 pageouts which says that I am not using my harddrive for extra memory space. Thus, I have enough memory.
Activity Monitor has a neat feature where it can display a dynamic dock icon. In Activity Monitor View > Dock icon > Show cpu history.
"Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor :"

Slow running MacBook Pro Early 2011
Am I right in thinking the only way to sort this out from the report below is to get a new hard disk? How do I go about getting Yosemite copied over onto a new drive? Does anyone have any recommendations for reasonably priced SSD's that would work in my machine? Or would it not be worth getting an SSD? Thanks in advance for any help/answers!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Does anyone know the best way of fixing a slow running iMac without adding more memory?
Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup. -
What is the remedy for a slow running iMac?
What is the remedy for a very slow running iMac?
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the slowdown.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Step 2
Launch the Console application in the same way as above, and select “kernel.log” from the file list. Post the dozen or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message. -

We were able to get all the info off his old drive before it totally died and install and larger, faster drive in its place and the previous slowdowns went away.

I have a very complex and large report that runs extremely slow. I have always just put the sql in the data model and run it there. Does using a refcursor or some other method run faster as a general rule? It is taking 5+ minutes for a couple of lines of data that equate to about 6 - 10 pages. When I run the same queries from the command line the data is returned in less than 30 seconds.
Thanks
AndyOne thing we found is if you are using bind parameters in the where clause the report often does not use any indexes (but when you convert to sqlplus you don't have bind parameter and hence runs quicker). Try using lexicals instead

Slow running query after upgrading to Oracle 10.2.0.4
Hello
I had posted a query in Database Upgrade section , but all in vian as i have had no replies . So i am posing this in general section as i can now confirm with the exact query issue .
1. I upgraded my oracle instance windows 64 bit from 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.4
2. All is good except when i use SUM or MAX in queries i get a very slow performance below is the complete example
Your help is much appreciated .
Regards
Harshad
=====================================================================================================
Example.
=====================================================================================================The query runs on a single table of 275,000,000 records, partitioned by Feed_Id in 53 partitions:-
SELECT *
FROM Fact_Life
WHERE Life_Id = 11555269
AND Feed_Id = 2;
This returns 18 rows in sub-second response time.
Explain Plan for it:-
SELECT *
FROM Fact_Life
WHERE Life_Id = 11555269
AND Feed_Id = 2;
Statement Id=3 Type=INDEX
Cost=938 TimeStamp=11-06-09::11::25:55
(1) SELECT STATEMENT ALL_ROWS
Est. Rows: 66 Cost: 940
(4) PARTITION RANGE SINGLE
Est. Rows: 66 Cost: 940
(3) TABLE TABLE ACCESS BY GLOBAL INDEX ROWID RDS.FACT_LIFE [Analyzed]
Blocks: 2,765,931 Est. Rows: 66 of 275,979,985 Cost: 940
(2) INDEX INDEX SKIP SCAN RDS.PIX_FTLE_1 [Analyzed]
Est. Rows: 3 Cost: 938
However, when the query employs an aggregate function:-
SELECT MAX(Cap_Period_Id)
FROM Fact_Life
WHERE Life_Id = 11555269
AND Feed_Id = 2;
This takes anything from 200-400 seconds to return.
Explain plan for it:-
SELECT MAX(CAP_Period_Id)
FROM Fact_Life
WHERE Life_Id = 11555269
AND Feed_Id = 2;
Statement Id=3 Type=PARTITION RANGE
Cost=7 TimeStamp=11-06-09::11::26:50
(1) SELECT STATEMENT ALL_ROWS
Est. Rows: 1 Cost: 7
(5) SORT AGGREGATE
Est. Rows: 1
(4) FIRST ROW
Est. Rows: 66 Cost: 7
(3) PARTITION RANGE SINGLE
Est. Rows: 66 Cost: 7
(2) INDEX INDEX RANGE SCAN (MIN/MAX) RDS.PIX_FTLE_1 [Analyzed]
Est. Rows: 66 Cost: 7
However when the query is run with a different Life_Id for the same partition:-
SELECT MAX(Cap_Period_Id)
FROM Fact_Life
WHERE Life_Id = 11555275
AND Feed_Id = 2;
Returns sub-second.
Explain plan for it:-
SELECT MAX(CAP_Period_Id)
FROM Fact_Life
WHERE Life_Id = 11555275
AND Feed_Id = 2;
Statement Id=3 Type=PARTITION RANGE
Cost=7 TimeStamp=11-06-09::11::29:29
(1) SELECT STATEMENT ALL_ROWS
Est. Rows: 1 Cost: 7
(5) SORT AGGREGATE
Est. Rows: 1
(4) FIRST ROW
Est. Rows: 66 Cost: 7
(3) PARTITION RANGE SINGLE
Est. Rows: 66 Cost: 7
(2) INDEX INDEX RANGE SCAN (MIN/MAX) RDS.PIX_FTLE_1 [Analyzed]
Est. Rows: 66 Cost: 7
Is this a problem with b-tree indexes? The Life_Id is allocated from a sequence and there are 67,535,682 rows in the partition. The stats are up to date.
=====================================================================================================
=====================================================================================================Hello Randolf,
Sorry for the late reply was down with flue and could not mail , as mentioned i below is the DDL for PIX_FTLE_1 & PIX_FTLE_2 . I have used TOAD to extract the script.
As i cant send the both the DDL in single post i will send it in 2 post , There is a limit of 30000 characters in sigle post .
Thanks once again for your help .

At unpredictable times my iMac starts to run really slow and I can hear the disk churning away. Looking in console I get a whole load of errors relating to:
2/13/14 5:09:07.197 PM com.apple.appkit.xpc.openAndSavePanelService[7321]: ERROR: CGSSetWindowTransformAtPlacement() returned 1001
There's a whole load of repeats of this with the occasionally more detailed:
2/13/14 5:00:58.928 PM com.apple.appkit.xpc.openAndSavePanelService[7321]: CGContextRestoreGState: invalid context 0x0. This is a serious error. This application, or a library it uses, is using an invalid context and is thereby contributing to an overall degradation of system stability and reliability. This notice is a courtesy: please fix this problem. It will become a fatal error in an upcoming update.
Any ideas on how to fix gratefullly recieved1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

8.1 64 bit Desktop Envy Phoenix Slow running system
I just purchased the »HP ENVY Phoenix 810-130qe CTO Desktop PC
I have updated all required updates, updated firmware for router and modem. The system is running 8.1 64 bit, in Windows 11. It is continiously freezing on webpages. it stops scrolling to reload, This problem is in hotmail.com (direct from explorer), myfitnesspal.com, facebook, foxnews.com. It is becoming very frustrating on a very expensive desktop directly purchased from HP. My husband has a new ASUS 8.1 and has no problems with downloads or uploads or freezing. I am within my 20 day return of this system. And I did return this same system a month ago due to this same issue. Please help in this. If Windows 11 and 8.1 are having issues, please let the consumer know that it is being worked on.Update! so far 2+ hours and not a single freeze or slow load.
I was on Microsoft.com forum site:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie11-iewindows8_1/internet-explorer-with-windows-81-very...
And I believe I've got the help to fix the problems. see link above.
The problem is HP SimplePass, specifically, OPBHOBrokerDsktop.exe and HPSimplepassBHOBroker. Killing both of those processes solved the problem. They are running by default on the new machines.
I uninstalled HP SimplePass and all is good.
A web search of SimplePass Windows 8 brings up hundreds of hits where people are having difficulty with it working on Win8.1. Fact is, working or not it's killing performance in a big way.
Woohoo!!! so far so good! After hours this week working with internet provider, router, and HP. Simple answer!! Hopefully HP can work on the issues in HPSimplePass, but in the mean time I"m not running on my system. -
Hi there i'm having a great issue with a VI i have created to detect heart rate variabilty from ECG and PPG signals and seeing which one is most accurate with regards to HRV.
I initially recorded 25 minutes worth of data and saved this into a text file. which has 2 columns the 1st being PPG data the 2nd ECG. There are at least 1000000 rows of data
I am now running this data into a VI which should give me results such a RMSDD PNN50, poincare plots and histograms etc the trouble i'm having is the VI is initially starts of fast then becomes incredibly slow i left it running for over 10hours and it hardly read any data
and me not being such a big labview expert knows how to fix this. I would be most grateful if somone could help me find my error as my thesis is due in 3 days and i'm stuck on this last part. I have attached my VI below . please please help me!

CV Report1.vi 41 KBFirst question: does the code produce the correct result, just slowly?
So you have a million data points and process them one point at a time in a FOR loop, updating several xy graphs and charts and building arrays. Most indicators will get overwritten with each iteration.
You are heavily filtering the data (twice!) and take the derivative (twice=second derivative). You are doing a pt-by-pt peak finding on 50 points with every new point added, meaning that you mostly analyze the same data (differing by only one point with each iteration. Seems inefficient. Wouldn't you detect most peaks 50x?
Since your data is filtered, maybe it would be sufficient to decimate the data before the loop processing. How correlated are adjacent points?
Have you analyzed which part of the code is slowest? What is the current execution time ("slow" is subjective) and what speed would you like to have instead?
Things like the histogram only needs to be done exactly once at the end. It seems pointless to do it over and over, a million times in a row even if the data did not change. Same problem for all the graphs.
You seems to take the difference between adjacent points in the generated array. Again you are repeating the same calculation over and over. Wouldn't it be much more effiicent to keep the array of pairwise differences in the shift register and use a scalar shift register to retain the immediately previous point. Subtract the new point from the previous and add it to the array instead.
LabVIEW Champion . Do more with less code and in less time . -
Curve 8520. Small clock icon appearing and very slow running
My curve is operating really slowly and when I try to open or send a text or open a mail, I get a very small clock icon appear. After about 20 secs, the text or mail opens. Not able to send any e mails either. Thought too many stored mails may be the problem but device won't now allow me to delete. Battery also running low after just a few hours,even after fully charging.
1. Do a reboot on the device: With the BlackBerry device POWERED ON, remove the battery for a minute, and then reinsert the battery to reboot.
2. To prevent freezing or lagging/slow response on any BlackBerry, the most important practice you can adopt is to be sure to CLOSE applications when you are finished using them.
If you just hit the red "end call" key to go back to the home screen the application actually stays open and running in the background. If you do this repeatedly you will have lots of apps open and consequently your memory will get used up. Lack of memory is the biggest reason your BlackBerry slows to a crawl or locks up. If you get into the habit of actually using the menu key to close the applications this will at least slow down this memory-clogging process. You still may have to do a battery pull or use the "Quickpull" app once in a while when things get slow.
To check what applications are running on your device in the background, press the Menu key then choose Switch Applications. You will see the icons of each application there.
So now, check your applications running in the background. There are commonly four or five applications that will always be running (Messages, Call Logs/Phone, BlackBerry Messenger, Homescreen, and the Browser; there are other third party applications such as BeeJive, and BlackBerry Alerts which will also run in the background which you cannot close if you want them to operate). Make certain that the browser is NOT on an active webpage (open the browser and choose Menu > Close). Close any other applications that do not need to be running (the camera or a game you were playing or Google Maps).
