SLOW: Safari? TimeWarner? G4?

I'm trying to identify which is causing slowness when clicking to different URLs.
1) My connection is with TimeWarner. Using SpeedTest.net, I'm getting: 9775 kb/s download and 949 kb/s upload.
2) Safari 3.0.4 OSX 10.4.11
3) G4 Quicksilver 867 mhz 1.5 GB RAM
It seems that my connection is pretty OK, is it Safari then or also my G4? Would a new iMac speed my accessing websites any faster?

Could I trouble you, to explain about "having several locations"
OS X Network panel in System Preferences offers the ability to create multiple locations for Network settings. In some instances this is helpful, especially if you switch between an Ethernet and Airport connection. Also helpful if you travel.
The default setting is Automatic. This means OS X searches for an available source. This can create a slow-down. My remedy is to create a specific location. Here's how it's done in OS X Panther or Tiger:
Go to the System Preferences>Network panel
- Location - set up a personal location by clicking on the drop down menu and selecting "add a location". Use a name familiar to you. Once established, select "apply".
- Next, click on the "Show" drop down menu and select Network Port Configurations. Depending on whether you use Ethernet or Airport (wireless) for your setup: Only Ethernet or Airport ought to be checked. Move it to the top of the list (you can drag it). Select "apply".
- Back to the "Show" menu, select either "Ethernet" or "Airport" - whichever applies. Click on the TCP panel. There, either enter the OpenDNS codes 208.67.222.220 and 208.67.220.222 (separate lines) in the DNS servers box and select "apply", or if you live in the US use Verizon's 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 codes. Also, you can always call your Internet Provider to find out if they have specific codes. If you have Comcast don't bother as they are not very forthcoming.
Creating a personal location, plus adding the DNS codes seems to speed things up.
Lastly, in the Finder, go to your Utilities folder and select "Terminal". Once the screen is open copy/paste lookupd -flushcache and press return. This clears out the DNS cache. Once done, quit Terminal.
Let me know how that works for you.

I've tried some ways from Apple Discussions to fix Safari 5, sometimes it seems fixed, but again and again it gets slow,

I had the same problem. If you have an external hard drive, your older edition Safari is probably saved on there. Otherwise, Google Safari 4 and see what you get. Safari 5 is horrible.

Slow Safari

I would like to thank all of those who are posting hints for dealing with a slow safari. I have two iBooks one running 10.2.8 and the other running 10.4.2, both of which seem to be infected.
Last evening I did make a few changes to the 10.2.8 iBook. I deleted the preference files, the cache, and the icons folder. No real improvement. I used the terminal 'ipconfig' command and got my ISP's DNS numbers and entered them. This seemed to make a huge difference. I even experimented with turning Java Script off. However, this actually made some web pages slower.
Turining Java Script back on and opening the Activities window, I noticed something really interesting. The pages Safari was hanging on, even with the above changes, were all attempting to load a similar file. In fact, Safari never does load that file and it appears that the page is completely loaded. One of the sites I am having difficulty with is Apple's page. Here is the file which Safari cannot load:

I am very encouraged that I have found this similar link between all of the pages that my Safari hangs on, but this means nothing to me. I was hoping someone would be familiar enough with these types of files that they could shed some light on my problems. I can only hope that this is the problem that all slow Safari users are encountering and a solution can be had.
I will attempt to make changes to my 10.4.2 iBook this evening and report those results as well. With a three month old at home it is difficult to get much free time to solve a very difficult problem.

Slow Safari with a Twist

I've read through the "Slow Safari" posts, but haven't seen a problem exactly like mine...my Safari runs fast sometimes, slow other times, usually when I'm entering some kind of form.
For example, no problem getting to Apple Support-->Discussions-->Safari
But when I enter a search term (like "Slow") it never loads. Same with Google, Mapquest, my credit union web site.
Any clue what's going on?
(Here's the twist: I'm sending this message via my circa 1995 PowerMac 7600 running IE because I couldn't get Safari to work...)

My problems are like yours... totally unpredictable. The forums are very slow. eBay for instance is usually slow if I can even get it to work. Everything else just totally varies. I have to refresh until it works and sometimes that doesn't even do it. I'm very frustrated with the whole problem. Like you, my old machines do not have these problems at all.

Really slow Safari

So, having searched most if not all the info here, all the things I've done (Onyx, basic maintinence, resetting all that could be reset), the dang thing is as slow as ever. I also made a new identity and of course, THAT is fast as all get-out.
Should I just back everything up and reformat? That'll be fun...

Three steps you can take::
Move the Icon folder in your Safari folder (User Library) to the trash. This resets the favicon file (small icons in the Address Bar) to zero, and you start building over. This folder can become rather large or corrupted, slowing Safari down in the process. If you don't want favicons appearing you can also access the folder in your Finder, call up the info panel (highlight folder, then apple key + I), change the preferences to read only and lock the folder. This will shut off the favicons.
Second, same Library>Caches - move the Safari folder to the trash. Safari will automatically create a new one.
Third - Safari Preferences>Autofill - this feature can slow down Safari as it increases in size. Good to select the edit key next to any of the 3 options offered, and remove items no longer necessary.
Give these a try and post back with results.
The latest version of Safari for Panther is available with the 10.3.9 combined update. If you upgrade, make sure you "repair permissions" via Disk Utility when the install/restart is completed.

Slow Safari Syndrome ("SSS")

Hello to all affected by a "Slow Safari Syndrome" or "SSS":
DESCRIPTION of the "Slow Safari Syndrome" or "SSS": The SSS is not only a very slow loading of web pages in Safari, but also incomplete loading or rendering of web pages that end up in loading errors, with some pages partially displayed after a very slow loading. It provides for a very unsatisfactory user experience.
BACKGROUND: I have experienced a slow Safari in an environment with the following characteristics:
- the Slow Safari Syndrome shows on my two different PowerBook laptops (PB G4/667 GHz, and a newer PB G4 / 1.65 GHz, both with the latest Mac OSX 10.4.3).
- The SSS happens at three different locations: (a) Home with Cox Cable ISP, b) Second home woth Verizon DSL, and c) Work at a building services with Sprint fiber optic. In all three the SSS is present.
PRELIMINARY CONCLUSION: Because of above, I can rule out ISP issues. I can also rule out hardware issues. What remains are software issues (Safari settings, Network settings, other settings).
PARTIAL SOLUTION FOUND: I did the following:
(a) rebuilt the DIrectories using DiskWarrior,
(b) repaired Permissions (three times, as the Directories change often)
(c) deleted the famous "com.apple.safari.plist". NOTICE that you need to quit Safari first, then delete the file. This is because closing Safari it saves the file, so you must Quit Safari first, delete the com.apple.safari.plist, empty the trash, and only then re-open Safari.
RESULTS & FINDINGS: Quiting Safari, deleting the com.apple.safari.plist, and reopening Safari did indeed improve the download speed of Safari, and did reduce the Slow Safari Syndrome ("SSS"), but unfortunately it did not eliminate this SSS. Something corrupts this file on a recurring basis, and this is related ti the SSS symptoms. Although my Safari is significantly faster now, (its speed increases drastically every time I delete the plist file), after a day or two Safari slows down again, and the SSS returns slowly, but surely. So, now I have to delete this PLIST file periodocally until a more permanent solution is found.
The Slow Safari Syndrome remains an open question, and I have entered this posting to ask for help, because I do not have a final solution to this issue. I will welcome any additional tidbits of information anyone may help. I hope one of the Apple gurus reads this, and sheds some light on how to eradicate the SSS for good. -- I hope this information is of use to anyone affected by this SSS. -- Regards to all.

Assorted observations, in no particular order:
• Java & Javascript are two different things. This site is loaded with JavaScript, not Java applets. The link to emptying the Java cache as a fix appears iffy at best. Besides, turning off either or both in Safari's Security pref has no effect.
• plist oddities: I just noticed that the plist for Safari has a new creation (not just modification) date cooresponding to the last time I opened Safari after I fast switched out of & back into my account. Thing is, I did not delete it beforehand, so it seems it writes a new file sometimes, taking the prefs from the old plist. I will investigate this more, but would like to know if anyone else is seeing anything similar.
• Speaking of switching users, since all the files we are discussing are in home folders, a quick test of their influence on the slowdown should be to log into another account. My own experiments in this area suggest that when the slowdown is in full force (like when pages won't even partially load), it occurs for all accounts. This in turn suggests some or all of the problem is not with user files.
• Don't laugh, but the only thing that seems to be common to all who are reporting this problem is using this site. Is it possible that something in the content of this site, which appears to be going down with great frequency, is actually part of the cause?
• Oddity #2: Every item in ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/ (used, I think only for Spotlight searches in bookmarks) also has a new creation date exactly the same as in the first oddity above. These all coorespond to bookmarks, none of which have been opened recently. This may have something to do with deleting the Safari plist, but the creation times don't jibe with that.

MBP retina slow Safari when connected to Buffalo

Hi.
I am new to Mac world. I recenlty purchased MBP retina. As soon as I brought to home I connected to WIFI (broadcasted by Buffalo WZR-HP-G450H) and noticed very slow Safari despite uncompromized internet connection. It is always written Sending request at bottom left corner of the Chrome window (same in Safari).
I checked on Windows machine, ipad and and experienced instantanous page loading. I switched back to old TP-Link and got very fast page loading in Safari and Chrome as well. It is very frustrating because I need Buffalo for transfering HD videos wireleslly to my TV and cant use the old TP-link router.
So, could you tell me what is the problem that MBP retina' is very slow downloading pages on Buffalo but quick on old router? Am I destined to have slow brosing speed on Retina?

Safari is Slow with TimeWarner RoadRunner

I don't normally post on these boards (this is my first time), but since someone else's post has helped me, I thought I would return the favor. First, some info...
My Computer: MacBook running Leopard OS 10.5.2
My Internet Service Provider: Time Warner/RoadRunner
My Problem: For the last few weeks, my page loads using Safari have been very slow. I would click on a link -- the page would begin loading -- the page would quit loading -- the blue progress bar would stop -- and then the bar would shoot ahead -- and the page would finish loading. This normally took anywhere from a few seconds to 45 seconds.
My Failed Solutions (not necessarily in the order I tried them):
1. I reset Safari. No improvement.
2. I called Apple Support. They recommended deleting some files from the "Library" folder. I did this and there was no improvement. There have been some other posts on this site that have recommended the same solution.
3. I removed and reinstalled Safari. No improvement.
4. I plugged my MacBook directly into my router via ethernet (thus taking it off my home wireless network). No improvement.
5. I tried using Safari on another wireless network (probably also using RoadRunner). No improvement.
6. I installed Firefox. It was no faster.
And then I saw the post below:
"Sometime around midnight on February 26th (at least for the SoCal users), TimeWarner's RoadRunner service started intercepting failed DNS requests, redirecting them to RoadRunner's own search and advertising platform. To see if this has been enabled in your area, try visiting {some random string}.com in your Web browser. This feature subverts user preferences set within browsers, which allow the user to select which search engine receives their typos and invalid domains."
I was not really certain what all that meant, but I entered something like www.1dfjdks4903.com into Safari and a RoadRunner page appeared. I had seen it a few times before recently, but never paid any attention to it. Then I saw this post:
"Would you by chance be using Roadrunner as your ISP. I noticed DNS queries took longer than usual after they started intercepting domain typos. I got fed up with it, and pointed my DNS settings to opendns.org. That solved the problem. My guess, is that your ISP is the one that's causing the problem."
Again, I didn't really know what all that meant (DNS?), but I went to www.opendns.org; hit the "Get Started" link; selected "Router"; and followed the directions.
Problem solved. My Safari is performing as well as it did before I started having problems and maybe even better! If you have already tried some of the solutions above, and nothing improves, you might want to try this if you are with Time Warner. It worked for me.
Anyway, I hope this post helps anyone out there who was as frustrated as I was a few days ago. And to the Mac users who put the above posts up that helped me, THANKS!

I wish you had posted this a week ago, when I spent several days on the phone with Time Warner and had several of their support people out to try to fix this. What I've learned: most of their tech support doesn't even know about their new domain redirection feature yet, and the people they send out don't want to hear about it. They'd rather reset/replace your modem, blame your router or computer...In my case they seriously told me all our computers (we have 6!) were broken. I'm not kidding!
From what I figured out myself, their system causes major havoc. I've had it redirect perfectly valid domain names (no typos), probably because my Internet connection became so unbearably slow and timed out? Don't know for sure, since Time Warner doesn't want to find out. I took screenshots of a page being redirected at 10:01 a.m. and loading perfectly fine at 10:02 a.m. I have screenshots of it telling me google.com and weather.com don't exist. I've showed all this to the technicians by they don't want to admit there's a problem. Someone suggested switching to open DNS as a solution. I may just switch ISPs as my solution.

How can I safely purge my slow Safari?

My edition of Safari, running under Mavericks 10.9.5, has been getting noticeably slow this last month or so, especially in resolving websites to screen. In fact, sometimes Safari will fail to acquire even a reliable site and will instead stall. I thought this was possibly a DNS problem on my setup but, having thoroughly checked out my router settings and network settings in the machines that I run, this is definitely not the case. Indeed, accessing the self same websites on a separate Windows machine has revealed no problems. So clearly Safari (v.7.1.2) is, for whatever reason, running slowly. I don't think I'm alone in this. I might add that I run no browser extensions and generally try to keep a clean machine, so this is very unlikely to be caused by any third-party software.
Possibly, on my Mac some cached areas of Safari are overflowing and are now causing this slowdown. Word has it that, unlike many other browsers, Safari doesn't manage the cached areas too well and so can eventually get slow. So, how can I deal with them without losing, for example, all my Privacy settings (websites that are allowed to set cookies), all my Reading List of regularly-visited sites, and for that matter my personalised layout of Safari? I see that there are several functions within Safari for doing purging, but I've no idea as to precisely what each one does.
For instance, what does Reset Safari do? (Safari/Reset Safari). Presumably, if I used it, I'd lose all my Safari settings?
In the Develop menu, there's Empty Caches. But which particular caches would this clear? And again, would I lose all personal settings?
And how about History/Clear History? Seems a good chance I'd lose all websites on my Reading List.
I've seen it suggested in another forum thread that the folder Library/Preferences/System Configuration should be deleted and allowed to re-form with a Restart, but looking at the normal contents of that folder it doesn't particularly strike me that re-forming it would be of any help in this context.
I've reported the slowness to Apple via their Feedback webpage, just in case the problem lies instead at a software design level. But of course you get no response from Feedback. Certainly, the latest Safari update, 7.1.2, downloaded a couple of days ago, has made no difference to this.

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.
If your browser is Safari, then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. If the Downloads button (with the icon of a downward-pointing arrow) is showing in the toolbar, click it and then click Clear in the box that appears. The download history will be removed. Any change?
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select the Advanced tab in the Preferences window and uncheck the box marked
Stop plug-ins to save power
Any change?
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If Parental Controls is active for any user, please turn it off and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Follow the instructions in this support article. Any change?
Open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Photos, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

Will the problems I am having with slow Safari response times continue if I port the image of my 4 to an new iphone 5?

As in many families, I am ready to upgrade my iphone 4 to a 5 and pass on my 4 to my partner (who has my old 3), BUT I am resistant to do so because I have been having problems with Safari, (very slow response time) ever since I upgraded to the new OS a month or so back. I have completed all the cleaning tips (cookies, individual app shut downs) and hard boot steps with no change. I can sit my partners Iphone 3 next to my 4 and when using Safari it beats it hands down, almost doubling the time it takes on the 3. My 4 is quicker on all the other apps so I don't believe it is a hardware issue. My tests were done using our home wi fi set up the same on both phones after running all the cleaning tips on both.
I actually broke down and called the support line and the first level support told me if I upgraded to the 5 I would likely carry the problem to the new phone. She said she suspected malware or a virus and that for $300 she could forward me to second level support that could scan my phone and see what the problem is on my 4 and support any issues on a new iphone 5 OR for a one time lower fee $79, just help me fix my 4.
Thinking through her options, I chose none of the above. Seems like I should be able to either 1) isolate the issue myself with the help of this forum or 2) upgrade to the iphone 5 and if the problem follows to the new one, get the support via the new device warranty. If the support person is correct and the problem is in the software and would follow the device, then in theroy I could wipe and restore my old 4 with the back up/data of my partners 3 and the problem on the 4 should be resolved.
I really don't want to carry the problem to a new phone if I can fix the issue first. I have airwatch software to push my work email to my phone and that is usually a pain to do when I upgrade anyhow. I don't need to pay for a new phone that has the same problem as my old one. I will get grief from my partner for passing on an issue that will come up with the daily use of the old iphone 4 that I will be responsible to fix anyhow. I have invested too much time already to generate problems on both our phones. Thanks in advance for any tips or guideance about a streamlined way forward.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Has any of this been tried?
FYI, there are no viruses that affect iOS unless the device has been hacked or jailbroken, in which case they cannot be discussed here.

Mac running slow, safari very slow.

Fix For Slow Safari On Windows

A number of people reported that Safari was running very slow for them on Windows. I was someone who was also seeing the same behavior. Web pages that would open up in 2 seconds under IE7 could take literally minutes to fully draw in Safari.
Someone mentioned a proxy issue in one of the other threads, and I got to thinking about that...I made a tiny change, and the problem is gone! Safari is now full steam ahead for me, compared to the snail is was before.
Here is how I fixed the issue.
1 - Click Start and open the Control Panel.
2 - Open the "Internet Options" Control Panel.
3 - Click the "Connections" tab at the top.
4 - Click the "LAN Settings" button at the bottom.
5 - Uncheck the "Automatically Detect Settings" Box.
6 - Click OK to exit the "LAN Settings" window.
7 - Click OK to exit the "Internet Options" window.
Your mileage may vary, but this really did work for me. Nothing else I had tried (clearing the cache, re-installing, etc.) made a difference...but this did. Not sure why it's not affecting everyone, but this doesn't seem to have any negative side effects. IE7 is still working fine for me with the "Automatically Detect" box unchecked.

Time Machine very slow, Safari and iTunes have to Force Quit

Anyone else having these issues after Mavericks "upgrade"?
Time Machine is so slow as to be ineffective of useless, symtoms:
     - takes hours to prepare and run a backup of a couple of GB to the Time Capsule, anything up to 20 hrs!
     - constantly revising the amount to be backed up, up and down
     - seems to freeze periodically ad stick part way through with no change to the backed amount for hours, then speeds up, freezes, speeds up
     - time remaining estimate alternates between "casculating, estimates of hours and seconds! wildly inaccurate
              - it's been saying 5 seconds remaining for the last 2 hrs.
     - have done two backup verifications to check for Time Capsule problems - none
     - only two successful backups achieved since the Maverisks "upgrade" due to the time it takes
     - both Time Capsule and Airport Express have the latest firmware and software
Coincident with this, both Safari and iTunes (the latest Mavericks compatible versions) both freeze when trying to quit them - have to force quit. Both experience random slow downs and with the spinning rainbow beachball.

Using a late 2008 aluminium unibody Macbook with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, 100Gb of free space o the SSD. Connecting via Wifi to Time Capsule (2TB, with 1.8TB free) and Airport Express (both n Wifi).

Check whether there is a crash report:
Go to your Applications Folder and open your Utilities Folder. Open the application Console.
In the left-hand column, click on Crash Reporter.
Click on the small triangle under Crash Reporter in the l/h column and they will all be listed.
Scroll down to the latest Safari report and click on it.
Now click on the r/h column (which now only shows THAT crash report and then Command-a to copy it all.
Come back here and Command-v it to post it here!

Extremely slow Safari, Mail, Firefox,etc.

I have been experiencing an extremely slow computer. Safari, Apple Mail, Firefox, Apple App store, iTunes store, any app the requires the internet. Sometimes it takes Google.com 30 seconds to load. Apple Mail routinely times out. After loading a web page and then selecting the back button, it takes over 30 seconds to reload the previous page. I have turned off iCloud.
I contacted my ISP, two service calls to check the line and they replaced the cable modem. The results from Speedtest.net were +25Mbps download so their advice was to call Apple.
I have been getting a Recoverd files folder in the trash when I start up the compter. Activity monitor only shows, activity in Finder, Firefox, and Acitvity Monitor, so nothing else is running in the background.
Any suggestions? Have I missed something?
Should I do a Clean Install?

Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.
From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.
Test. After testing, reboot as usual and post the results.
