Slow Satellite C855-1VJ

Hello,
We recently bought this PC with Windows 8 preinstalled. Everything works but is absolutely slow. E.g. to start up the microsoft solitaire collection takes more than 5 seconds, and then one has to wait another 5 seconds once selected a game before one can start.
We also have a 3 years old Satellite 350D with half the memory, slower CPU and graphic card and it runs much faster.
A more professional example: When running the anti-virus check of Trend Housecall, the old PC does this in about 3 hours. A new one with less than half the data on it, requires more than 6 hours.
In system settings I changed yet the option from better graphics to optimal performance without any remarkable result.
I looked a lot in a numbeer of settings without results.
Note also that we do not load a lot of programs at startup.
Please Help

Hello,
Thanks for your answer. No the Satellite 35OD has windows 8 not installed. It is a Windows 7. But Windows 8 was announced to be some faster.
I tried the drive fitness test, unfortunately it does not recognise my hardisk.
This one is a Hitachi HTS547564A9E384. On a chkdsk, he shows no problems.
I tried to put here a list of the programs loaded at startup, but as explained in an other question I get then response 403
Note also that I got some small improvement of speed by no longer starting the zonealarm anti virus and using the built in anti virus of windows. As this one does not get the best ratings I will try Avast (other proposals are welcome)
I remark that I opened my problem twice, I don't know how.
I will close the other one as answered.
Kind regards

  • Re: Satellite C855-1GN very slow performance - booting procedure takes 15min

My sister bought a Satellite C855-1GN installed with Win7 64-bit last December (typical - 4 days out of guarantee now) and for sometime has found it getting slower and slower.
She asked me to take a look at it for her, and she is quite right, this laptop is appalling unresponsive for even the most basic of tasks like opening Windows Explorer, which takes over a minute to open.
It's a similar story for pretty much any button press on this machine, sometimes longer depending on what has been clicked. Even getting the thing booted up from power button press to desktop being visible (let alone usable) takes a staggering 15 minutes plus.
Entering text such the password for user to login to Windows, or a URL in any browser (IE and chrome installed by default) results in the spinning circle equivalent to an egg timer for at least 60 seconds before anything happens, as does pretty much any button click. For example, Windows start button or right click on anything whatsoever.
Initially I suspected some kind of malware / too much rubbish installed. Ran full scans, no issues. Disabled / uninstalled all of the bloatware I could find, still no difference.
Shut down all power saving features, still appallingly slow.
Windows Experience / Task Manager / resmon all report nothing out of the ordinary nor anything eating resources. Out of desperation, reset to Out Of Box Experience condition using the hidden recovery partition... which took over 24 hours to complete, and that's not an exaggeration.
I went to bed, then to work for the day, and it still hadn't finished until I'd been home for a couple of hours.
This machine now has a completely fresh (albeit Toshiba specific) Win7 install, and runs just as horrifically slowly. I'm still waiting for desktop, 17 minutes after powering it on before typing this. It's had several reboots, and is not still installing anything.
6GB of RAM is more than ample. Whilst not a P3, 5 or 7, there is no way that an Intel B950 dual core processor running at an admittedly not top class 2.10GHz can be this slow (especially as it wasn't until a few months ago), I've had awful Celerons in my time which have been infinitely faster than this.
Has anyone else had similarly pathetic performance from this model? If so, we're any of you able to resolve it? Or should we just bin this paperweight?

    Hi
In the past we have discussed many times about similar issues and some people were not satisfied about performance of brand new notebooks preinstalled with original recovery image.
As small example you can check this thread. Generally speaking there is described what you should do with this machine. You must, I like to use word optimize, preinstalled operating system. It will definitely run better and faster.
Other way there can also be problem with HDD. If your sister likes this machine I recommend you a small investment in new hardware. Exchange HDD with SSD. SSDs are not so expensive anymore so you can buy one, I would say, with 250GB and I think it is enough free space for their work.
You cannot imagine how fast they are. I use one on my old P500. Notebook starts in 40 seconds only.
Im pretty sure with new SSD and optimized original Win7 that you got with this notebook your sister will have good and pretty fast machine.

  • Satellite C855-2FG doesn't have UEFI boot

    Hi everyone!
I would like to ask, that Toshiba Satellite C855-2fg laptop can't boot in UEFI mode? Or it will be put in a new BIOS update?
Before you ask, it doesn't have a secure boot option or UEFI enabling option in its BIOS.
    Thanks for the answers!

Yes I know this, but i would like to make multiboot option between windows, linux and mac osx. It is difficult to do this on an MBR partition table, because windows make its first bootloader to the mbr, after that could linux do its own grub 2 bootloader. If i want to use linux i have to wait first for the windows 8.1 bootloader, where i can choose linux bootloader. After this the computer reboots and i can boot into linux.
But its very slow. I hoped, that a laptop i buy in 2013 has UEFI boot option :(
In some other topics i read, that similar toshiba products has this option in bios.
    Thank you for your answer!

  • Satellite C855-S5194 Windows 8 Recovery OS and software

    Hi,
I just bought a Satellite C855-S5194 with Win8  and already created system recovery disks. Now I bought an Office and installed it through Microsoft website (no disk). I would like to create an image for the case the hard drive is broken and not accessible, which includes both the OS and the Office that I installed.
I read from the User Guide that the system recovery disks can restore the OS and preinstalled software, but how about the software that I bought from MS?
Please let me know if there is any way to recover both OS and software. Thank you in advance!

I am not a computer expert,..
So please pay attention, read things carefully, follow any links, think about it, and don't jump to hasty conclusions. Better to do more reading instead of typing a vague message to me.
I'll be repeating myself now, but I'll try to put more words in..
My No. 1 item explains that Windows 8 contains Windows 7's backup. You can google that and learn all about it. In particular, you'll learn that it enables you to create an image of the entire disk on external media. I'll save you some trouble and give you places to do your reading.
Learn more about system image backup
Back up your programs, system settings, and files
Restore your computer from a system image backup
Notice that when you create a system image of the hard drive, you can restore it either to the existing disk or to a brand new disk.
We create one of these images (with third-party tools) every single day for every computer and retain ten generations. Backup is our most important application.
My No. 2 item talks about a repair disk. That's the one you need when you are restoring to a new hard drive. Since Windows is not running, you need a way to begin the restore process. That's one of the functions of the repair disk.
You'll see a link in the Windows 7 File Recovery area like this.
       Create a system repair disc
My No. 3 item talks about fixing things on your existing drive. Feel free to ignore it if you like. Maybe other viewers will find it of interest. When/if you find that Windows is broken, you'll begin to appreciate the various ways of recovering. Refresh is new in Windows 8.

  • Toshiba Satellite C855-SS530 touchpad issues: left-click randomly releases

Brand new Toshiba Satellite C855-SS530 Windows 8. My touchpad will very often respond erratically. As I hold down on the left button and scroll, often times scroll will randomly release and then sometimes re-engage. This will happen with web pages, holding windows, etc. I'll be dragging a window or file or what-have-you, it will release the hold of it's own accord (without me releasing the left button) then sometimes re-engage (picking up other random files, selecting stuff on the desktop or other random things I didn't want to do). Most often I am holding down the left button and scrolling down a web page, and it will randomly "let go" of the scroll (before I have let go of the left button). Occassionally the touchpad will not immediately respond. It's too annoying to keep this laptop.
It isn't clear to me whether this is hardware or software related...Could be a bad button, bad touchpad, loose wire, or even a memory-glitch error which disrupts the touchpad signal. Does anyone know if this is a known issue with the Satellite C855-S5350. The touchpad is vital. It can't glitch out even 1% of the time. If I can't solve the issue, it'll likely be returned. I turned off most of the Synaptics silly stuff (edge swipe, etc) and it didn't resolve anything. There are nearly no services running eating up RAM so I have no idea why the touchpad would be freezing up...

  • Since Win 8.1 update Satellite C855-2HW shuts off

    Greetings,
Well, June 2013 I bought my Satellite C855-2HW with Windows 8 as operating system.
The notebook worked smooth until in December 2013 I got Windows 8.1 updates.
Since then every day (sometimes several times a day) the notebook shuts off, the Automatic Recovery feature of Windows is initiated and the message 'Windows couldn't be started as it should, a system recovery is necessary.' pops up.
I've got this problem now for four weeks now and every time I have to install some software since the system is set to a previous recovery point.
I hope someone can help me get rid of this problem.
    My sincere thanks in advance.
    Stefan

    Hi
It would be interesting to know how you installed / upgraded to Win 8.1 system.
Did you follow the Toshiba step by step instruction in order to update the Win 8.1 properly?
    I mean this instruction:
    http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-upgrade-stepbystep/
I did it with my Toshiba notebook and I must say: no problems until now
Additionally you should not forget to install/update the Win 8.1 drivers provided by Toshiba
On Toshiba EU driver page (Win 8.1 update) you will find the installation instruction for Win 8.1 drivers. It shows you the drivers and tools which need to be removed, updated or installed again.
Im sure the notebook would run properly in case the Win 8.1 update would be done properly.

  • How to install Windows 8 on Satellite C855-21W - No disk

    Hello,
Recently the HDD from my SATELLITE C855-21W crashed. All Data wear lost.
    Serial: YC273011R
Now i would like to reinstall Windows 8.
But i have no CD /DVD and all partitions on the HDD are gone.
How can i reinstall Win 8 on the Laptop again?
Where can i get a DVD?
    Thanks

    Hi
This is pity but HDD can always start to malfunction and therefore its advisable to create a Recovery Disk before starting to use the notebook.
However, now you cannot create such recovery disk because the files are lost.
    Now you have two options:
    1) You can install the Windows 8 using Microsoft Win 8 disk (you will need to purchase Win 8 if you dont have it). The essential Toshiba drivers could be downloaded from the Toshiba driver page
    2) The second option is much easier: you could order the Toshiba Recovery disk from this page http://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx and could set the notebook back to the factory settings.

  • How to format HDD on my Satellite C855-1GQ?

    I have a Toshiba Satellite C855-1GQ.
How do I format my HDD thanks for your help.

    Hello
I don't know what do you want to do exactly. HDD can be formatted before you install original recovery image that you got with your machine but also if you want to install own OS version.
If you have created recovery disc you can format HDD using one of the offered options (erase the hard disk) - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R02.htm
In case that you want to use Microsoft installation disc at the beginning of setup procedure current HDD will be shown. You have option to delete existing partitions, create new partitions and install Windows OS.
Please let us know what do you want to do exactly.

  • Win 7 Touchpad driver is not working on Satellite C855-21V

    Hello everybody!
I have an Satellite C855-21V and it came with Windows 8. After one week of desaster Im sure I want never again a Windows 8 on my Computer!
So I installed Windows 7 and can find all the drivers somewhere in the internet.
The only thing what is not working is the touchpad.
Win 8 driver dont work and from other models the win 7 driver don't work.
Does anybody know what Brand is the touchpad or where to find a driver for win 7?
Thank you all for the help!
    Best Regards
    Frank

    Hi
First of all the touchpad should work after Win 7 installation.
The Windows system contain an standard touchpad driver which should control the touchpad.
Of course the installation of additional Synaptics driver would provide more touchpad features (finger scrolling, etc) but also without the Synaptics driver the touchpad should work.
Anyway, I already mentioned the Synaptics driver and you can download this here:
    http://www.synaptics.com/resources/drivers
PS: is the touchpad enabled? F5 Enables and disables the touchpad

  • Satellite C855-1CH - cannot control brightness after closing / opening lid

    hello
i have a problem with windows 7 64 and amd 7610m driver, when i install the driver from toshiba site, have problem with hibernate,
When i closed lid and unplugged ac adapter and after few minutes/hours i turn on the computer the brightness is same (my brightness with battery is 30% and ac 100%) and can't change with function keys, and power option dont have brightness monitor, but only i reboot the system its back ,
    How fix this problem?
I trying to install driver of amd 7600/7500 and the battery time elapsed fast with down brightness in 1.5/2 hours (with 7610m 2.5/3) and the fan of motherboard work strong , while i only use in solitaire.
    thanks for help!
if someone can to help me , contact to me.

    >i try to install driver from amd site -driver amd 7500/7600 not amd 7610m . this work without problem but the fan work very strong and Heats up faster i afraid Afraid it will not destroy my computer beacuse is diffrent driver.
So it seems the problem is related to the display driver because as you mentioned, using the display driver from AMD website the brightness control works without problems.
The C855-1CH series was equipped with the graphic chip which is used in other notebook models as well.
Therefore the GPU driver released for other series with the same graphic card chip should be compatible.
I recommend you to test other graphic driver versions released for the following models:
    Satellite C850 PSKCCE, PSCBYE
    Satellite C855 PSKCCE, PSKCEE,
    Satellite C870 PSC8EE, PSCBCE

I have a Satellite C855-S5350, and i recently purchased a brand new LG 6300LB HD tv. Id like to use it as a wireless display. I have a Satellite C855-2F3 running win8 64bit. It has 8gb ram installed but it is currently only showing 2gb.
    What could cause this/resolve this?

Sorry, yes, it was late and I was tired, problem has been solved now. I had to clean the cooling system out today and when I put the laptop back together it now shows 6gb, it may have just come lose.
    Thanks.

  • What is the latest BIOS for Satellite C855-1U4

    Hello everyone
I wanted to know as to which title was the latest bios for notebook Satellite C855-1U4.
    Thank you.

Grazie per la risposta ma il bios attuale il 6.10 del 24/09/2012 e quindi pi recente dell' 1.60-WIN.
Mi chiedevo se quelli forniti da Toshiba America fossero adatti; l'ultimo il 6.40.

  • Can I reflash BIOS on Satellite C855-12K PSKCEE to the same version?

I want to *REFLASH* Toshiba BIOS to *THE SAME* VERSION. In other words, I want to force flash utility to install the same BIOS version despite it's already isntalled (instead of just displaying popup "the newest version laready isntalled" and closing application after this popup).
Is this possible? Is there any way to fool flash utility to reinstall BIOS to the same version? Or to force older version install?
    Any workaround is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Satellite C855-12K PSKCEE

Toshiba EU driver page provides only the windows-based BIOS version for download because its safe and easy to perform such BIOS update
The traditional BIOS update procedure requires another method and other BIOS version as far as I know such version is available for authorized service engineer only.
But the mentioned .exe file isnt an real exe application but this is an zipped folder.
Using WinRAR or WinZip its possible to unzip this exe file clicking right and choosing Extract here
