Slow saving in After Effects CC (12.2)

Im using AE version 12.2.0.52
Still have this problem both of my program and scratch drive are very fast SSD... Just cleaned the cache & database folder... Nothing new. Saving time about 60 seconds both manual and auto save. VERY annoying.. Any clue???

Hello,
I have same problem and tested in many rigs and with different projects:
when you move to AECC saving time gets much longer.
The things the tests have in common are:
i) OS (windows 7)
ii) big ram (32+ gb)
iii) nvidia cards
and of course After Effects CC.

  • Problem Saving in After Effects CS6

I am currently working on a project in After Effects CS6 that is no more than 40 seconds. Yet, when I try to save the project, After Effects will not respond. As a result, I must force quit the application and restart it. I believe it is a problem with the file because I have worked on different projects instead and they will save with no problem - ones that are much longer than 40 seconds! Not sure if it is a problem with my ram or memory, but I checked both and they all seem like they shouldn't be a result of the problem. Please help.

    After Effects CS6 version 11.0.2
I have installed the most recent updates.
    Mac OS X Version 10.8.4
    Source footage: H.264
    There are no error messages.
When this problem occured was whenever I tried to save the project. I was not able to save my changes since.
I have never had a problem with it until now. All my other projects are saving correctly but this one seems to freeze up whenever I do try to save it no matter what change I have addressed.
I currently have Quicktime Player Version 10.2
I do not run any other software but Finder and/or Adobe Bridge CS6 while I am in After Effects.
I have a few plug-ins installed to After Effects but they have not affected any computer performance or created saving issues.
My computer is a MacBook Pro 13-inch, mid 2012. It has a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 processor along with 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory/ram. It has Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB and 373.99 free gigs of space. However, I noticed that over 280 of my 750gig hard drive are videos, a majority from After Effects. It would be nice to know how to perform a disc cleanup so I could perhaps solve the problem through that option. I have no external hard drives nor are any connected.
I have no third-party hardware involved.
I am not aware that I am using OpenGL to render my clips.
This problem only occurs when saving my project on this .aep file only!
I have tried emptying my disk and audio cache which has not helped ... I hope I will not have to re-install After Effects because that is the last thing I would want to do.
Hope this information helps ... thanks guys!

  • Slow rendering in After Effects CC 2014

I'm using Adobe After Effects CC 2014.02 on a Macbook pro with 10.9.3 OSX installed.
I need to render a composition that is 3 minutes long, without any special effects or video. It's just a 500 mb Photoshop file with some movements. This takes anywhere from 7 to 30 hours to render. I rendered a similar composition before and this only lasted 20 minutes. Rendering it at a third of the quality only takes a couple of minutes, so the 7 to 30 hours seem excessive.
    These are the memory settings:
    Installed RAM: 16,00 GB
    Current RAM Usage: 9,64 GB
    Allowed RAM Usage: 11,00 GB
    Process ID
    Application Name
    Min Needed Memory
    Max Usable Memory
    Max Allowed Memory
    Current Memory
    Current Priority
    1105
    After Effects
    0,40
    16,00
    11,00
    9,64
    1 - High
Tried clearing disk and media cache, boosting RAM and installed CUDA, but nothing worked. What could be the problem?

NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB graphics
The time it takes to render is the same in CC. Flattening the file in Photoshop is not an option, since I need all the different layers.
The strange thing is that the first video I made using After Effects rendered fine, while the second one (and the third I'm working on now) are not. So I would think my computer is capable of doing this and it has to be something to do with a setting somewhere. Also, I sent someone on a Windows computer the files and the composition rendered within 20 minutes.

  • Slow and lagging After Effects CS5.5

    Hello!
I've tried to add some effects and preview the video with AE CS5.5 but editin is very painful. I try to preview and my fps is from 3-14 fps. It's painful to edit.
The editing video is 1280 x 720, 13min long and I've edited in Premiere Pro CS5.5 and exported it as a uncompressed AVI file. The size of the file is 16,7 Gt. I've added two effects: Remove Grain and Sharpen. I've tried to preview with Space and then FPS is about 14-16 fps but with Numpad 0 it quickly goes through the video and then it previews the video with 3-6 fps. It's just horrible to preview.
I've disabled "Enable OpenGL" and when I preview with space, there's no difference in fps and same thing with numpad0 preview. I've also tried to change the "Render multiple frames simultaneously" settings but with no success. I'm using current settings:
RAM reserved for other applications: 6 GB
    Installed CPUs: 8
CPUs reserved for other applications: 4
RAM allocation per background CPU: 1.5 GB
Actual CPUs that will be used: 4
I've also looked at my HDD activity when I preview, the drive with caches and previews don't write at all, just read the video from the drive (cache, footage, previews, and captured are in the same drive)
Is there any ideas to improve the performance? Do I have to change my hardware? Do I have enough RAM or is my CPU too slow for this? And is the normal preview with space or is the numpad?
    Current hardware:
    Intel i7-870
    16Gb RAM
    Nvidia GeForce 8600GT 512Mt
Samsung F3 1TB 7200rpm - OS Drive, software, AE, Premiere Pro and etc.
2 x Samsung F3 1TB 7200rpm RAID0 - Uncompressed Footage, cache, scratch disk, video preview, audio preview, captured audio, captured video.
2 x Samsung F4 2TB 5400rpm - Footage Both have same files, files straight from camera, not edited, completely raw material.
    Dell U2211H - monitor
    LG L1715S - monitor
    Logitech G35 - headset
    External speakers
    Windows 7 64bit Ultimate
All my drivers are up-to-date and my Windows 7 is reinstalled few weeks ago (clean install)

Okey, little progress have made with this progress. I've lowered the preview resolution to quarter and fps rose from 13 to 20-22. But still, it's not realtime. Should my pc have enough juice to run this? And is it normal that when I preview, AE uses 3-4Gb of RAM and my CPU usage is about 30-60% and two cores of eight are unused (I've told to AE to use 8 cores, 4 of them are HT cores)? And my RAID setup usage is about 3% (which is just the reading, if I move the video to the other drive, usage of RAID is 0%). Is this normal?
I've also tried to move my video to the other drive, no success.

  • Dynamic Link slow in After Effect CC 2014 (Version 13.0)

So been waiting & hoping for an update from Adobe on the 2014 versions of AE & PP that fixes this massive slowdown of AE comps in PP and nothing has happened in 2 months!
So can anyone at Adobe tell me why AE now runs so slowly in PP when the previous version ran AE comps quickly on my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 2048 MB . I'm keen to know especially as just spent £500 switching from an ATI Radeon card that does not support CUDA to Nvidia just to get the GPU acceleration with CUDA and a few weeks later the 2014 upgrade comes out and I loose all the new speed!

I found this reference to a bug fix in AE 13.1
"slow rendering of After Effects compositions used in Premiere Pro through Dynamic Link when the main After Effects application is open"
I think I was getting slow rendering even with AE closed, but let's see...

  • Adobe dynamic link-From after effects to Premiere

I have few sequences save in different After effects versions because my project was to big to work with one final after effect version.
I would like to use Adobe dynamic link to send all the seuqences into Adobe premiere to make a "one sequence" that I could export.
But when I am using Adobe dynamique link, I need to close and open the differents versions saved in after effects.
When I do it, the sequences appear offline in Premiere.
What can I do to see all the sequences online?Do I have to work with affter effects online all the time?
    Thanks a lot,
    Alice

First and foremost, running After Effects is not necessary so as to be able to work with dynamically linked compositions in Premiere Pro. PrPro invokes headless version of AE in the background so as to communicate with dynamically linked comps.
Second, while working with dynamically linked compositions avoid incremental numbers at the end of your AE projects names. Better yet, avoid incremental numbers at the end of your dynamically linked comps names as well in both AE and PrPro by giving them meaning names instead of default ones. If you really need to include incremental numbers in those names, insert them somewhere in the middle. The bug related to incremental numbers at the end of the names was biting strongly in CS5.5 (don't remember if CS5 was affected as well) and was claimed as fixed in CS6.

  • My current version is Adobe After Effects CS6 11.0.3. It's problem is I can't update 13.02 version

I have a problem with After Effect version update because when I saved my After Effect project file at my Mac laptop, After Effect Verison was 11.0.3. So When I went to Mac desktop in edit suite room in University and tried open my project on the Mac desktop. The message pop out and said this project must be converted from version 11.0.3 (Macintosh 64). The original file will be unchanged.  So Mac desktop have After Effect's version is 13.02 and I can't update my Mac laptop because I can' find After Effect 13.0.2 update file anywhere in the internet.  so Can you help me to solve this problem, please because I will hand in my university assignment next month.
    Thanks

Until your project is finished, you can ONLY work on it using your laptop.  Don't try to work on it using a different machine.
Unless you RENT CS6 -- that is, you didn't purchase it, but pay a monthly fee to use it -- you won't have acess to 13.0.2.
This isn't a simple update -- this is installing a new VERSION of the software, and beginning with version 12, the software is rented.
So get your project done on your own machine, then worry about whether or not you should incur a monthly expense to have the latest version of AE.  Don't change horses in mid-stream!
Now, there IS a way to work on both your laptop and that other machine, but it is downright messy!  It also involves having access to AE Creative Cloud (aka Version 12) on that machine -- so until you can confirm that fact, I'm not even going to describe the messy process.
I stick to my original advice -- keep the project on the laptop unless you enjoy missing deadlines.  Or due dates.

  • Adobe completely silent on Mac Pro & After Effects

It appears after reading the dozens of posts on the Adobe forums regarding this issue, Adobe simply will not offer a solution, as it has been reported steadily since the middle of this year.  Of the few responses to the community, an Adobe representative stated in October, 2014 that they are working with Apple on the issue.  Over 2 months and I still have useless software.  People with newer Mac Pros (mine is a 6 core, 3gb GPU) have crawling renders since After Effects 2014.  We have tried running on both Yosemite and Mavericks, but nothing.
I am a loyal customer of Adobe for nearly a decade, but this really makes me wonder if my film company can rely on Adobe products moving forward.

As an example in this post: Re: After Effects CC really slow in response

We don't tend to remain silent on anything about which we can offer useful information.
Okay here are a few more, from Adobe website and Cow including a blog posting from an Adobe employee, putting the blame on "App Nap".  I left one of our Mac Pros on Mavericks and put one on Yosemite to see if the problem that has been reported has been fixed.  Nope.

  • Placing after effects in Final Cut X

We have an After Effects clip saved through Compressor as a ProRes 422 file. It is saved from After Effects as a 16 bit file. When we look at it in Quicktime on the computer it looks fine, but when we bring it into Final Cut X it is small and crunchy.
Should it be saved as a 32 bit? Any other suggestions?
If it looks ok on the computer screen in Quicktime, is there a trick to bringing it into Final Cut X?
    Thanks,
    Mari

Need some more information. "Small and crunchY" are inexact descriptors. The bit depth of the file should not affect the size of the image. What pixel dimensions are your FCP timeline and your AE movie? Are they the same?

  • Need a laptop for running After Effects and other video editors

Alright, I'm looking for a laptop that can run Adobe After Effects, Premiere, and Photoshop smoothly(Mainly After Effects). My current laptop  a $400 HP Compaq is capable of running those programs but not without constant freezing and slowness, specifically in After Effects and Premiere. Ideally it could run Adobe After Effects and Premiere simultaneously without being slow.
My maximum budget is $1200. I've browsed a good deal myself, but I haven't seen much that has caught my eye. I'm looking for a Windows laptop that also has a monitor that is at least 16". All of these programs are CS5. I'm here because I want to get the most out of my budget as I can, and hopefully people more experienced in Adobe products can help me out.
Ask any questions you have incase I left anything out.

  • Can this laptop run After effects well?

    Hello,
    I have acer aspire 5742g laptop, i5 480m(max 2.93ghz), Geforce 540m, 6gb ram and slow 5400rpm HDD
After effects runs quite slow if I do something more advanced so I think its time for upgrade.
I found this quite cheap for specs it provides
    Asus N56JR
    Intel® Core™ i7-4700HQ Processor (6 MB Cache, 2.4 Ghz)
    8 GB DDR3 - 1600 MHz
    GeForce GTX 760M GDDR5 2GB
1TB HDD 5400RPM(I will buy ssd later)
    Notebooks & Ultrabooks - N56JR - ASUS
Will this laptop be able to handle after effects good enough?

That would be better but you could use a bunch more ram. After Effects is a professional app with tons of capabilities. The more complex the project the higher the demands are on the system. If you want AE to run quickly when you work on extremely complex projects and you want to run on a laptop then you need a professional workstation grade laptop not a consumer model. Dell and HP make them, Apple makes the MacBookPro R which becomes a workstation grade laptop when you max it out. Simply put, buy the most powerful laptop with the most memory you can afford, make sure the company provides excellent customer service and get a long warrantee - or take your chances with a consumer grade laptop.

  • Slow Saving Times in After Effects CC

    Hi all,
I'm experiencing some really slow project saving times in After Effects CC.  I'm used to having projects save in under two seconds in AE CS4, but AE CC is taking up to ten minutes to save a project of comparable size and complexity!
After reading a few threads about this potentially being caused by big project files and/or Warp Stabilizer, I thought I would just have to live with the long save times.  But, I have since started another project that isn't using Warpy, and the saving time is no better - possibly even worse.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    My computer specs:
    Windows 7 64bit
    Intel Core2Duo @ 2.5GHz
    4GB RAM (AE uses 2.5-3GBs)
    GeForce 8600M GS
Project specs (with Warpy):  4-6 main comps and around 25-30 precomps, 1080p, Warpy is used on maybe 5 short layers.  Project file is 21 MBs.
Project specs (without Warpy):  Around 10-15 main comps, and 5-10 precomps.  Various comp definitions, ranging from 500x500 to 5100x3300.  Project file is 3MBs.
    Thanks!

Look at post #7 in the thread I previously linked to.  Here's a direct link to that post: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5508252#5508252
There's currently a bug in After Effects where a file on your software drive is being checked any time you access a menu, use a keyboard shortcut, etc.
With your system drive (which I assume is what AE is installed on) being a slow, 5400 RPM laptop drive, I'd say this is the culprit.  As Todd mentions, there could be a fix released.  In September.  If you're lucky.  [Fail.]
You'll have to either run AE from a faster drive (probably not an option if you're on a laptop), wait until September, or go back to CS4.
I've not encountered the problem myself, but my system drive is super-fast: a SATA-3 SSD with 500+ MB read and writes.

  • CS6 After Effects PNG export very slow - Not Multi-Threaded?

I am rendering an after effects project consisting of over 320,000 source frames of 4000x4000 resolution, outputting over 250,000 frames as PNG files.
Rendering is instant on our machines, all time is spent "compressing and writing" frames. It is taking forever.
We have several machines that are all windows 7, with 16 physical cores, 64GB ram, connected to a 4Gbit SAN.
I did some experimenting, tried using all 16 cores, or 8 cores, or disabled multi-frame rendering even. When this project is rendering my cpu usage is almost non existent,. maybe 1%-5%  at times.
with 16 frames at a time being rendered it is averaging between 1 and 7 seconds per frame depending on the content of the frame.
Does Adobe have any plans to multi-thread the PNG exporter? or is there a faster 3rd party plugin out there i could use? It is very slow and doesn't tax the CPU's at all. Even on a single core it doesnt even use 100% cpu while its saving.
I even tried loading one of the frames into photoshop and simpy hit save as a PNG and it took almost 15 seconds to compress and save. I did it again without compression and it saved the 40MB raw file instantly.
That is terrible performance for machines like mine that are pretty much the fastest things out there.
    Thanks!

I appreciate your attempt for a workaround solution, however as you well know you can't render to a video file from multiple machines. we must output directly to individual frames, I setup 8 machines to work on this project, if we did not use compression then we would be writing over 300MB/sec of data which would not be good for our fibre network which unfortunatly is only 4Gbit. And it would be about 10TB of data total.
As for your workaround Im not sure we could gain speed with your method either way. spending the extra time to encode to a lossless format and then process again in AME sounds like it would take even more time, unless AME could create PNG files at some sort of ridiculous speed maxxing out every core at 100% or something to compress the PNG's. Out of curiosity I will throw some frames at AME and see how long it takes to compress and how much cpu it will use.
    thanks

  • After Effects Render SLOW - Slower than my old PC

I am using a new 1 month old 20" iMac, 2.0Ghz with 4gb DDR2 RAM, running OS X Leopard. Adobe After Effects CS3 is rendering really slow, and I mean like the same as my PC. Also the same with Premiere Pro, it renders really slow and I have tried different formats too, in premiere pro it took 2 hours to render a 5 minute video (saved to .mp4 640x480 pixels, end size was 20mb). This is wayyy to slow.
I compared my Mac with my old PC running Windows XP, it is pentium 4, 3.2Ghz with Hyper threading technonlogy and 1.5 GB DDR Ram. I tested rendering andrew kramers 3d room tutorial, I downloaded the project file. I only chose to render some of it and the old PC was FASTER than the Mac by around 15-20%. BUT, the mac was ONLY using 6% of the 3gb (it only recognises 3 gig not 4 but I dont mind that too much) and the PC was using 60-70% of the 1.5GB (thats using more RAM than the mac) So why can't I get the Mac to use more RAM when rendering, and why is it slower??? It is faster at EVERYTHING else, well the ram preview is about the same.
How can I get my mac to use more of the RAM and why is it rendering and previewing the same if not SLOWER than my 5 year old PC?
Any help would be awesome, thanks
    - Dillon

RAM allocation is dynamic, you cannot enforce anything on that end. AE takes what it needs and no more. I would think that your issue has to do with the graphics card/ chipset, so my first suggestion would be to make sure you have updated your AE to the 8.0.2 patch. Secondly, run a software update for your Mac. If neither of this applies and brings any betterment, disable the AE_OpenGL.plugin. Simply delete it or move it outside the AE directory. Most certainly your issues hinge on your graphics hardware, so one of the previous recommendations should yield a noticable effect.

  • After Effects CS6 - Very slow workflow

Hi everyone, my first writing in adobe forums. I've contacted 3 adobe support agents, but I didn't get much help from them. Recently I switched from PC to Mac Pro, having Adobe Production Premium 5.5 for Windows and now upgraded to Adobe Production Premium 6.
First I tried a trial of After Effects CC and I was surprised how slow it is. Now I'm using AE CS6 full version and it's a bit better, but still pretty dang slow. (The video I made for adobe support explaining the problem is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jsZZpH0vYU )
To try to cut long story short. In the video adove, I've created couple of text layers and couple of shape layers. Made them 3D. Added a camera too. When I move the camera, everything is refreshing extremly slow. It's like you're having 100 3D layers and very busy scene,
and actually it's few most simplest 3D layers. The agents from adobe support told me to switch to half rez, or draft mode etc. But the problem is, I do not want to work in half rey, draft mode or something similar, with my configuration it should work pretty normal. Never
had these kind of problems in AE CS5.5. I tried everything, updated the software, updated my Mac OS, disabled global cache, even disabled multiprocessing etc. Btw, rendering is okay.
Is this the way CS6 is made? Is it supposed to be slow? Because, literally I got an answer from the agent that AECS6 is designed like that, in other words, to be slow
I really have no idea anymore how to make this work. I would like to get back to my lovely 5.5, but I only have license for Windows. If you guys could help me, I would really appriciate that.
    I use:
    * Mac Pro
    * 2 x 2,4 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    * 64 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    * ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB
    * 2TB HDD
    * 2 x Apple LED Cinema Display 27"
    * After Effects CS6 - 11.0.2.11
    * Mac OS X 10.8.4
    * I haven't had this problems ever before (using ae for quite some time)
    * At the moment no 3rd party plugins installed
    Thanks!
    Mirza

You'll have to get used to creating Ram Previews and using AE's interface in the right way. You should really go through the getting started materials on the home page and take a look at the FAQ. AE is a layer based pixel calculating beast that will do a lot more to a movie at 60 frames per second than Photoshop will do on to a still image. After Effects is essentially Photoshop for movies with a lot more options.
If you want to smoothly drag through the timeline and playback multiple cuts with simple transitions and two or three layers then use Premiere Pro. If you need to use 20 layers and 60 effects to create a stunning composite or motion graphics effect then you're stuck with rendering at just about any price point.
