Slow Saving Times in After Effects CC

Hi all,
I'm experiencing some really slow project saving times in After Effects CC.  I'm used to having projects save in under two seconds in AE CS4, but AE CC is taking up to ten minutes to save a project of comparable size and complexity!
After reading a few threads about this potentially being caused by big project files and/or Warp Stabilizer, I thought I would just have to live with the long save times.  But, I have since started another project that isn't using Warpy, and the saving time is no better - possibly even worse.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My computer specs:
Windows 7 64bit
Intel Core2Duo @ 2.5GHz
4GB RAM (AE uses 2.5-3GBs)
GeForce 8600M GS
Project specs (with Warpy):  4-6 main comps and around 25-30 precomps, 1080p, Warpy is used on maybe 5 short layers.  Project file is 21 MBs.
Project specs (without Warpy):  Around 10-15 main comps, and 5-10 precomps.  Various comp definitions, ranging from 500x500 to 5100x3300.  Project file is 3MBs.
Thanks!

Look at post #7 in the thread I previously linked to.  Here's a direct link to that post: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5508252#5508252
There's currently a bug in After Effects where a file on your software drive is being checked any time you access a menu, use a keyboard shortcut, etc.
With your system drive (which I assume is what AE is installed on) being a slow, 5400 RPM laptop drive, I'd say this is the culprit.  As Todd mentions, there could be a fix released.  In September.  If you're lucky.  [Fail.]
You'll have to either run AE from a faster drive (probably not an option if you're on a laptop), wait until September, or go back to CS4.
I've not encountered the problem myself, but my system drive is super-fast: a SATA-3 SSD with 500+ MB read and writes.

I have this on both machines running 10.10.1 OS X and AE 2014.  I see on line that others are having this issue.  I think it needs a Patch ASAP.

Hello.  Basically I can create a  new comp  that is set to 1920 x 1080, @ 30 frames per second for 1 minute TRT.  I create a new solid layer, say red.  I hit space bar or play on the screen,  and it does not play in real time.  ITs on my Imac as well.  same OS and Same Version software.

Well, before you hit the panic button, why don't you tell us precisely what you're doing when AE plays at 17fps -- the keys you hit, the buttons you click to begin play.

  • Slow motion: PPro v After Effects

I'm new to the CS3 products. In previous versions I found After Effects slow motion (time remapping) to be better quality output than PPro slow motion on a clip. Has anyone done a comparison for slow motion in CS3 between PPro and After Effects?

Oh, right on. I hadn't played with Time Warp in Premiere. Yes, I have tried the PPro Time Reampping, but I still find the keyframing really cumbersome. I guess I've been working with After Effects too long for this sort of thing. Can't teach an old dog, eh? I suppose I'll delve into it more deeply when the need arises.
I've been having another issue with Premiere that precludes me from using Time Remapping, Time Warp, Speed, etc: Since I upgraded to CS3, whenever I apply speed changes (of any kind) the clip are automatically deinterlaced -- whether I've checked "deinterlace" or not. Sometimes this problem goes away when I deselect Frame Blending, but more often not. Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

  • Slow preview playback in After Effects

    Hi Folks
I just recently set up CS6 on a new z820 workstation and for some reason my after effects timeline does not playback in realtime when previewing.  Everything is green on the timeline, yet when it plays it is about half speed.  I have no doubt my system has the specs to play rendered media in real time (2x8core, Quadro 4000, 64GB Ram, Sonnet hard drive array) so obviously I have something set up wrong.  I'm running a Kona 3 with the latest drivers and I suspect this is the culprit.  I've had other issues related to the Kona, such as losing display to my external monitors sporadically.  It will be fine for a while then suddenly the output signal turns either solid green or some form of garbled junk.  Very strange, although the Kona output seems perfectly fine when I'm in Premiere.
Anyhow, any help zeroing in on the problem would be greatly appreaciated.
    Best,
    EE

    Thanks Tom
However, I do think I have playback set to computer monitor (not in front of system right now).  Definitely seems like there's something AE doesn't like about my card (it is an older version of the Kona 3).  I have a support ticket in with AJA so hopefully that will turn up something.
As far as my Quadro 4000 goes, I was kind of forced into using it on account of other software on my system.  If it was up to me, I would have put in a GTX680 or 690.  I have a GTX680 at home and it is rock solid in AE and Premiere.  Timelines that are heavily dependant on GPU accelerated FX render about twice as fast on my 6-core/GTX680 vs my z820/Quadro 4000 work system.  I'm hoping to upgrade to the Quadro 5000K when it comes out, possibly with the Tesla sidekick.  In the meantime, I have to sort out this Kona thing

  • How can I make a countdown timer using After Effects

I'd like to make a video that has a timer that counts down one second at a time. I need one starting at 5:00 (five minutes). Is there a way to easily do this in After Effects without having to manually change the text every second?
    Thanks.

I'm glad that you found a solution, but I thought that you might appreciate a suggestion of another approach.
Colin Braley provides a tutorial and example project on
his website that show how to use an expression on the Source Text property to animate text to overcome some of the limitations of the Numbers effect.
There's a similar example in the
"Example: Animate text as a timecode display" section of After Effects Help.
Here are some Community Help searches that can lead you to some ideas, too:

  • Slow computer on opening After Effects CC

    Hello everyone,
For about several months now I have a problem with my computer. Whenever I open a project in Premiere Pro, Photoshop, etc. my computer does well. When I open After Effects everything is fine too, but at the moment when I open a project within AE, my computer starts to make noise (hard disks), and is suddenly slower. Now such a project can even be, just one title in a comp. It doesn't even have to be a big project.
After I close After Effects, my computer is still slow for several minutes (~10 min.). I realize that in Premiere Pro. Playback doesn't go as smooth anymore, PPro and other applications freeze for several seconds somethimes, etc.
Since my computer is only for work, it would surprice me if I have malware, spyware or virusses. I have done a scan and a defrag, but that didn't helped.
    This is my technical information:
    Windows 7 64bit
Internal RAID5 (WD Caviar Black 7200 RPM) where I store all my project and work files on.
SSD M4 for my OS where I have Adobe CC installed on.
    CPU: i7 3930K
    GPU: GTX580
    Memory: Crucial 32GB - DDR3 1.35v 1600Mhz
Adobe CC, on the latest update.
This computer is exactly one year old now.
Now my question to the community is, if this is a comon problem? If this could be a bug within After Effects? (I have tried a reïnstall) Or are there any tools to scan/clean for such a problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jordy

There was an After Effects-specific issue with odd slowness that others have reported. That is going to be fixed in the update that's coming in a couple of weeks (mid-October was the promised date). Hopefully that issue is the same as yours and the coming update solves it for you too.

  • Saving back to After Effects CS6 from CC14?

I'm a student and I'm using a trial version of After Effects CC. On the computers at school, we use aftereffects CS6, and I need to turn in my .aep files on those computers, which will not open the CC aftereffects files. Is there any way to save back from after effects CC to after effects CS6?

with many adobe programs using file>save as> will let you select one version back.

  • Exchange Active Sync UTC Daylight Saving Time

Color me a bit confused. I am attempting to write an IOS client application to communicate with Exchange ActiveSync and display calendar information. But I am seeing some conflicting information in the protocol docs when compared to what I am getting from
Exchange. Either that or I am somehow misinterpreting one or the other.
My intent is to save an appointment in my local database in Coordinated Universal Time and then have the UI read in the information and display it as appropriate to the local timezone. In this way an recurring appointment created before daylight saving time
for Noon will still be at the same time of day in local time as an appointment created during daylight saving time for noon. But they are not.
My understanding of the documentation is as such:
In MS-ASCAL pdf section 2.2.2.40 (roughly page 34) it says for Start Time that : ...the value of this element is a dateTime data type as specified in MS-ASDTYPE section 2.3.
Moving to MS-ASDTYPE section 2.3 (roughly page 7) the dateTime value is specified in the format of ISO-8601 and all dates are given in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)
Looking up coordinated universal time I see that UTC does not changed with the seasons as local or civil time does and therefore DOES NOT support daylight saving time. This makes sense, as DST is decidedly local and is ignored by many areas. You cannot know
from the perspective of UTC whether or not to apply a DST offset without knowing what timezone and area the time represents, therefore no daylight saving time can be supported. Based on this information I should be able to just slap the dates into my database
as they are and merely have the UI adjust itself to display them properly.
However, as a tested I began seeing a divergence of an hour between the two appointments in the database before the UI has even read them. To confirm this I created two recurring appointments representing Lunch at 12 noon local time. One that starts on March
1st 2014 (Standard Time) and one that starts on March 10th 2014 (daylight saving time) in the eastern timezone. This should be March X 2014 at 1700 hours in both cases should it not?
In the WBXML/XML that I am receiving I am getting two different times. The appointment that starts during standard time gives me a start time of 20140301T170000Z. The appointment that starts after daylight saving time is in effect locally gives me 20140301T160000Z.
The difference between the two times is 1 hour, which is the daylight saving time offset. It is my perception based on everything that I have read both in the microsoft protocol documentation and outside it that these two times should be the same and that whatever
client that gets to display them should be the one putting the offset in place as needed. Noon local time is noon local time but local time is the province of the local municipality/timezone, not that of UTC.
So my question is what exactly is going on here? Are the start/stop/date stamp date times in UTC or not. If they are in UTC, then why are they offset by an hour instead of being at the same time? Obviously outlook displays these correctly for local time,
because both appear at noon. But in my case my database contains locally adjusted times instead of the UTC times I thought I was getting which is throwing off when those appointments appear in the UI.
Can someone please clarify what's going on here and what I should be seeing?
    Thanks.
    E

Thanks for the reply, however after doing what is said the problem still remains. I did not try the manual approach, because of the time that would take with calendars that change at least daily.
I am running the latest update of ICal and IPod, you would think this would have been addressed with one of the updates to allow the sync to work correctly with 5th generation IPods.
I am going to try and turn off day light savings time set the clock to a Central Time zone and see if that works, I do not cross time zones much, anymore.

  • Dynamic Link with PP/After Effects CS5 question

So, first time using After Effects ever. Absolutely loving it, can't wait to really learn this program.
    Anyways, my situation.
I have a 15 second commercial I'm editing with Premiere Pro CS5 on my MacBook Pro. The second to last shot, I initially right clicked the clip in the timeline and selected "Replace With After Effects Composition." I did some motion graphics on this shot, and I'm pretty sure when I was done, I rendered the timeline in PP which synced back into PP what I did in AE. I believe at that time I closed AE completely without saving the composition.
Now I still have this shot in my PP timeline and it still has the AE effects I added, but I do not believe there is any saved AE file that references that composition. Whenever I click "Replace With After Effects" it just opens a new linked composition, but instead of any footage and animation, there is just a big color bar screen.
Is there any way to still edit this composition in AE? What is the proper way to save files linked between PP/AE so you can completely close both programs and open them later and still edit the composition?

See, that's what I would think to, but I'm almost sure I did not save the linked comp in AE.
Not on my computer now, but I could check on lunch.
I guess I could just create a dummy project in PP, open a linked comp thru Dynamic Link, do a few changes in AE, render/sync to PP, and then close AE w/o saving and see what happens?
Are there any good walkthroughs you guys are aware of? I'm reading how pre-CS5, Dynamic Link was really only a "one-way" street, but that has changed in CS5.

  • How to enable sound scrolling in After Effects?

So basicly what im trying to do is be able to scroll through my compisition with the mouse and hear sound like in Sony Vegas is this possiple?  So if i drag my mouse over footage sound will play. Also can you enable keyframes on a mask?
    Thanks so much!
    Cam

According to this page in the Adobe Help you can preview audio by ctrl+alt+drag the current timeline indicator. It also has a lot of other useful info about previewing in AE.
Now, keep in mind, previewing audio and video in AE is very different from non-linear editors like Vegas. Rick Gerard had a good explanation for this:
Sony Vegas, Premiere Pro, Final Cut, Avid are all NLE's (Non Linear Editors) and they are specifically designed to playback a video stream. With any of them, if you stack enough layers or effects on the video they will have to render a new video stream based on pixel based calculations for every pixel in the stack. This rendering, especially for HD sources or for complex plug-ins, will take quite a bit of time.
After Effects, Flame, Fusion, Shake -- are all pixel based image processing applications that act very much like Photoshop. They calculate the values of every pixel in every frame, come up with a new pixel, and then play those pixels back as a video stream. More importantly, AE and all the other pixel based compositing apps, always work internally with completely uncompressed pixel data. NLE's rely on codecs and in some cases, hardware, to playback the video. It's an entirely different way of working with moving images.
In After Effects you enable the preview by loading a bunch of frames into RAM then the video stream is played back. You start the process with the 0 key on the numeric keypad and not with the Space Bar as you do in nearly every NLE ever created. The length of the preview depends entirely on how much free ram you have available and it takes some time to generate these new pixels. The more layers, the more effects, the more calculations that need to be performed the longer it will take to process the RAM preview. There's currently no way around this rendering time. A modern NLE will handle an amazing number of video streams simultaneously, but as soon as you exceed the capability of the system you're stuck with a render. Most NLE's, given the same number of calculations, actually take a little longer than After Effects to do the same kind of effects. Open GL, and other GPU acceleration helps many NLE's achieve higher performance but it has yet to be implemented into a pixel based compositing app. The sad truth of the matter is that if you want to do compositing in any of the available compositing apps, you have to wait for renders. They are getting better. Memory management and efficiency is improving. GPU accelerated effects are being added, but for now, that's about as good as it gets.
I hope this helps. As long as you use After Effects to create shots and don't try to make it do the work of a NLE you should be fine. Movies come from NLE's, amazing shots come from AE.
    - Rick Gerard
This page has links to lots of information about animating masks and shape layers.
It sounds like you're a beginner in AE. You should really start here to get a foundation in the basics before you just jump into it.

  • After Effects Trial not downloading

When attempting to download the After Effects trial it states that it will download the creative cloud and then upon signing in the After Effects trial will download. I have attempted this twice and both time the After Effects trial does not dowload upon siging intot he creative cloud nor is it a listed option to dowload  under the "apps" tab.  I am currently using Windows 7.

My guess is that you're using a 32-bit operating system. After Effects requires a 64-bit OS.

  • After effects CC export to premiere pro CC: audio doesn't match

    Hello!
I am making an animation serie for Belgian TV. They need me to export  only my audio from premiere (I make the animations in after effects).
    They need OMF format.
When I export from after effects CC > Premiere pro project (only to export my audio to OMF from here) the audio doesn't match.
Adobe media encoder doesn' support OMF unfortunately.
Example; if I stretch the audio time in after effects, premiere doesn't.
I am really stressing out and any help would be very welcome
    Thank you!

    Thanks for the reply!
When I import my after effects composition into premiere, it is perfectly visible and the audio is correct.
But now it is suddenly impossible to select > export > OMF
