Slow Screen Unlocks and SSH Session Establishment

Greetings,
I am running multiple Solaris 10 clients that use QAS 4.0 to autheticate with my Windows 2003 domain controller (also with QAS 4.0 installed). All user accounts are configured and maintained from the domain controller.
Users are having an issue when unlocking their screens. It can take 60 seconds or more for a user to unlock a workstation (after they have entered their password). Additionally some users are experiencing similar issues when logging in via ssh or at the workstation.
Of course, I logged in with no problem and am not expereincing any other these issues with my account.
I verified the resolv.conf and hosts files. They are in order and DNS resolution seems to be working. If it were a consistent issue I would be able to better troubleshoot the issue.
Are there any other places I can check to verify other settings or troubleshoot this issue?
Thanks for the help!

I think you've already hit the nail on the head but maybe not from the right angle. You said you don't have the same issues. Is your client/desktop configured with a name in the same dns structure that the sol10 system is using? If so what about the clients that are having issues?
Or is you client listed in the hosts file? While resolve.conf may be ok, what about nsswitch.conf?
The only times I have seen ssh be that slow (60 seconds is default timeout) it has always come down to a problem resolving the name of the client.

  • Screen Sharing and SSH sessions freeze occasionally on multiple mac minis

I have 28 Mac Minis at work. With such a large number of minis, I obviously can't have a monitor attached to each of them so I've got them plugged into a network switch and access them via Screen Sharing (both via regular Screen Sharing and ARD) and SSH sessions.
A few of them seem to suffer from intermittent problems however. I'll be using Screen Sharing when the session freezes. It may unfreeze eventually, but I can also usually just quit out and re-connect and it will be unfrozen. The same thing happens when I'm connected via SSH, it will freeze and I won't be able to type in any more commands.
I need help troubleshooting (or if anyone knows what could be causing this, that'd be cool too).
I've tried connecting from both a Mac Pro on the wired network and a MacBook Pro on the wireless network. The freezing seems to only happen on certain Mac Minis as well.
I've tried switching network cables from a Mac Mini that doesn't suffer from this problem with one that does and nothing changed.
I also thought it might be a bandwidth issue at first, despite being a gigabit switch connected via cat6 to the rest of our gigabit network, but even when no significant bandwidth is being used, the freezing still occurs.
One more thing I want to test is the connection between the switch all these Mac Minis is plugged into and one of the other switches that all our other network traffic goes through. I didn't set it up myself so I fear that it might be an old, damaged cable or something. Failing that, I have no idea what the problem could be, which is why I'm posting here.
So, does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Or any other ideas for troubleshooting the problem? Thanks.
(They're all running 10.6.8, and range from Mid-2007 to 2009 models).

It would be in the system log. However, the next step would be to safe-boot in order to eliminate third-party system modifications. That goes for both client and server. If you can reproduce the problem in safe mode, then you probably have a network issue. Take everything offline except one client and one server, and test.

  • Screen sharing and ssh tunnel

I'm trying to connect screen sharing to a server (S2) on my local network through a server(S1) on my local network with a static IP (local) and a static IP (public)
    S1 is XServer G5 10.3.9 (dual nic)
S2 is Mountain Lion Server 10.8.2
    Client: MBP ML 10.8.2
    Client -> S1 -> S2
    IP are for illustration
    S1: Public 71.100.100.200
    S1: Local 192.168.6.100
    S2: Local 192.168.6.101
S1 Firewall rule: 01105 allow tcp from any to 192.168.6.0/24 5900
    On client:
    > ssh -L 5901:192.168.6.101:5900 71.100.100.200
    connect to server  vnc://192.168.6.101:5901
... no joy connection timeout - standard connection fail message for screen sharing.

I managed to find a slightly different tunnel command that does work.
    ssh -t -L localhost:5901:S2:5900 S1
    ssh -t -L localhost:5901:<private server>:5900 <public(dmz) server>
had to set screen sharing prerferences for adaptive quailty encryption of passworkd and keystroks only for the relatively slow connection.

  • KT880 Slow Screen Draw and other problems

Is there a performance issue with the Kt880 boards that causes it to draw the screen slow, and causes the onboard LAN to fight with the USB controllers?
Do I need to reduce the FSB of my RAM @333 to the FSB of the 2400+ @266?
Maybe there are some BIOS tweaks that fix this problem?

Not sure yet but I think I have sorted out most of the bugs.
Changing the FSB speeds and removing a stick of ram does nothing, except to reduce the system performance slightly.
Updated BIOS to latest. No change.
Repair install after removing Symantec AV 9 Corp, and System Works 2005. helped some.
Removing the NIC, uninstalling all Networking components then putting it all back really made an improvment.
Then I turned on the SATA controller and let it install the PCI to IDE bridges and that helped. Removed the VIA CPU to AGP driver and it reinstalled it's self. slight improvment on the screen draw problem.
Getting the USB to stop messing with the PCI bus was easy. I removed all the PCI cards RESET Bios data, reinstall VIA 4.53, added the PCI cards in one at a time then added on the 2 extra drives. Will change the drives to SATA next week.
I think the whole problem comes from the install CD I made with NLight. Nlight has an option to remove components, turn off SFP and modify the UXTHEME.dll, and the TCPIP.sys file.
After work Monday I will try a fresh install of Win XP OEM original on a spare drive, and update it to SP1, then SP2 and see how it goes.
So far game play is excellent with good frame rates and no crashes. My team mates were complaining of poor frame rates on a custom BF1942 DC Map with frames of under 10FPS where I was at 65 to 100FPS.
That poor KT600 I had was probably fine

  • BT Internet Slow for CITRIX and UMA Sessions

Fairly recently (in the last couple of months) my broadband speed has dropped to virtually zero for services across a CITRIX link and UMA mobile phone connections. Browsing speeds and streaming media are absoultly fine around 6.5mbps. I've isolated this by also running those services through my mobile hotspot 3G account and they then operate fine. Anyone else with similar experiences or have any ideas on how to resolve? Many thanks....

    Any feedback greatly appreciated

    Hi.
Once in the CLI of an ACE 4710, using the command "clear ssh session id" I am unable to clear/kill any of the remote ssh sessions established.
According to the administration guide, the "clear ssh .." command must clear the sessions, but it does not, or maybe I am missing something?

  • Can't access the web but can screen share and secure shell on my network???

    Hi,
I don't know if this is relevant, but I installed a security patch along with a safari patch the other day and the next morning, I could not access the internet, however I can do things like screen share and ssh. I cannot however view internal websites on my network, whether I'm connected via airport or ethernet cable (attached to either time capsule or the modem directly). Whenever I try to go to a website in either firefox or Safari, I get a message saying I'm not connected to the internet and a "Network Diagnostics" button (which says it cannot fix my problem). Here is what I've tried:
    -Repair Disk (everything OK)
    -Repair Permissions
    -Restart computer
-Turn Airport card off then on
-Restart modem and routers, one by one in daisy chain order (and then restarted computer)
    -Tried different browsers
-Tried connecting directly to modem via Ethernet cable in addition to wireless
-Restored the System from a time-capsule backup from Sept. 6th (noticed the problem on the 10th)
    -Turned off my firewall
-Created a new user account and tried it
-Let my computer remain off for a half hour
    -Zapped the p-ram
    Here's what I've confirmed I CAN'T do:
-Access the web via either Safari or firefox (haven't tried any other browsers)
    -Access the Software Update Server
-My iCal calendars cannot access the webdav server
Surprisingly, here's what I've confirmed I CAN do:
-Ping other computers on my network
-Use the Screen Sharing App. with computers on my network
-Access the internet from every other computer on my network (4 of them)
-ssh to other computers on my network
I've been using my computer infrequently lately, and I'm not sure when the last time was I accessed the internet or for that matter when I performed the security patching, but I'm pretty sure it was within the last week and a half. I really don't want to try restoring from an earlier backup, but I'm reaching the end of my rope. Anyone have any other ideas? I'm fresh out.
    Rob

The problem was either the Security Patch 2010-005 or the Safari update (though I don't have the version number in front of me). Note, I had ignored the iTunes 10 update. I assume that I must have miscalculated the date I performed the updates because the problem persisted after restore from a Sept. 6th backup off my time capsule.
I went to the Apple Store and they were able to restore full internet access by performing a 10.5.8 combo-update. When we ran Software Update at the Apple Store, the 3 updates were again there available for download, but I am going to ignore them all because of this issue. The people at the apple store agreed that it was the update which caused the problem.

  • Proxyless clustering and SSL session state

The current 6.0 docs are a bit quiet on SSL and clustering, so can I check
whether it is the case that when proxy-less clustering is used with SSL, a

establishment? In other words, the clustering isn't attempting to replicate
the SSL session state or similar super-subtle strategy.

              Alex,
A failover will result in a new SSL connection being started. As you say
this will mean that certificate exchange and session key exchange will occur
again. All of the replicated state is kept at a higher level in the server
so that we can use different SSL implementations including hardware
              accelerators.
              Regards,
              Adam

The HUD Inspector in Full Screen View seems to position at the right margin of the image as a default(?)  If I toggle the button in the top right of the HUD it 'unlocks' and I can drag it to where I prefer -- at the left margin; (for over a decade) my dock has resided at the right margin so all my slider manipulation over countless editing sessions in Aperture has been ingrained to work at the left margin -- but, the vast majority of the time, the HUD overlaps the image I am editing in this 'unlocked' mode.
Every occasionally I enter Full Screen View and it positions on the left margin *without* superimposition...(!) My great joy is modulated into aggravation, however, should my tracking cursor drift all the way 'out of bounds' -- to call in the hidden pane of adjacent images sequenced in the library... This dramatically shrinks the Full Screen display and re-locks the HUD; if I toggle the switch to re-xpand the image it re-positions at the right margin!!!!  I SOOoooooo wish I knew how to control the default 'locked' margin of the HUD in Full Screen View...

Drag it over to the Left. Then lock it there.

  • Extremely slow navigation in full screen mode and other erratic behavior

    Hi,
Is it me or every new release of PSE feels heavier and more bloated than the previous?
I have PSE9 running on a dual core, one year old dell PC with W7 with 4GB of RAM. I have the maximum amount of recommended memory alloted to the program (set in preferences).
Ever since I upgraded, moving forward (or backward) to the next pic (via pagedown, or up) through the filmstrip in fullscreen mode has become very, very sluggish. Sometimes it just will not move to the next image even when thi image is in the same directory as the previous one.
Is this sluggish navigation normal? Or is there something that I can do to improve performance??
I look at images in fullscreen mode to decide which ones to edit and which ones to delete so I use this feature a lot. Another example of sluggish-- or in this case erratic-- behavior happens when looking at an image in full screen and then I decide to edit the image. I load the image to the edito by clicking the editor icon on the left options pane. Even if the editor is already open, sometimes it brings the editor to the ferground with the image ready to be edited and sometimes it does not; I have to cycle with alt-tab to make the editor active. Why this erratic behavior? Then, after saving an image and selecting the close button, you are supposed to be returned to the organizer... well this happens sometimes, other times I have to manually swithc using alt-tab.
Please help, this is very annoying.

I don't understand whether you have a Referenced-Masters Library or a Managed-Masters Library. Drives slow as they fill and with a Managed-Masters Library sooner or later the internal drive will become overfilled. I recommend a Referenced-Masters Library with Masters on an external drive and the Aperture Library on the internal drive.
iMacs, laptops and Minis are by definition limiting to heavy Aperture usage, so work carefully to optimize setup and workflow.
First is to max the RAM and make sure the hard drive stays less than 70% full. Restart the iMac prior to a major Aperture session and only have Aperture open. You should also investigate to see if a substantially more powerful video card is available at reasonable price.
Set Preview size to be exactly screen size and build Previews manually when the box is otherwise not being aggressively used.

  • SSH sessions over Putty die unexpectedly & commandline entry is slow

I have a Sun Ultra-60 running Solaris 9 at patch level 118558-05. Users of this server report that their ssh sessions over Putty to this server die unexpectedly anywhere from one to two times per week. The users are usually in a vim session at the time editing php files for the website hosted on the system. Another problem reported is that the user's command line input slows dramatically and they must wait for the server to complete the line they were typing prior to proceeding.
I cannot find the source of this problem. To date, the following is what I have tried in my troubleshooting efforts.
    1) ptdiag - reports no hardware failures
    2) /var/adm/messages - reports no issues relating to the problem mentioned above.
    3) swap -l - the server has plenty of swap and shows no need for additional swap space Here is the output from swap -l
    swapfile dev swaplo blocks free
    /dev/vx/dsk/swapvol 213,6 16 8389632 8358176
I should also mention that /tmp is not full and is currently only at 2% of it's capacity.
    4) ndd shows that the link speed, duplex, etc. are correct at 100Mbps full-duplex.
    5) System uptime is at 337 days and the uptime command currently shows the following load: load average: 0.12, 0.11, 0.09
    6) vxdisk list shows the two internal mirrored disks as being online and no errors. iostat -En shows no soft or hard errors on the two disks
    7) This server only has two users and the main applications in use are mysql and apache.
    8) I have upgraded to the latest version of the vim editor and the problem still persists. I have also had the users upgrade to the latest version of Putty and to turn on the logging feature of Putty which hasn't revealed any information as to why the sessions are unexpectedly terminating.
    9) I have checked the /etc/default/login setting for the "TIMEOUT" variable which is commented out. I also checked the users profiles and verified that there are no timeout variables defined.
    10) Here is my netstat -i output:
Name Mtu Net/Dest Address Ipkts Ierrs Opkts Oerrs Collis Queue
    lo0 8232 loopback localhost 52375982 0 52375982 0 0 0
    qfe0 1500 servername servername 2319804623 29884 1493848177 0 0 0
    qfe1 1500 servernamea servernamea 231550668 0 3694 0 0 0
    qfe2 1500 servernameb servernameb 40944152 1 65630146 0 0 0
Some of these numbers look high, but I don't see any collisions.
Any help would be appreciated. If additional commands need to be run, please advise and I will gladly post.
    Thanks much for any assistance.

    Hi Darren,
The user's vim session dies when the users are actively typing.
As for there being a firewall or NAT device between the workstation and the server, yes, there is. The users are in one building and the server is housed in a datacenter in a separate building. The users do not have this issue with out other Solaris 8 and Solaris 10 servers...only this one particular server. A traceroute to the server takes only 5 hops and returns quickly.
As for the logs, I just checked /var/adm/messages and it is reporting the following types of messages over and over.:
    [ID 317013 daemon.notice] bpcd[11746] from some IP
I think these messages are generated from Veritas Netbackup which is administered by a separate team than what I am on, but I can have them investigate.

great Problemes after installing Yosemite (10.10.2 ) with Photoshop CS6....The program crashes --last time 10 times during my work session..wacomtable doesnt work..it is slow...and get error messages about the graphic card....It s a Terror to work with my beloved Photoshop!

The Yosemite upgrade very often damages existing Photoshop installations.  Thank Apple for that.
You need to uninstall and re-install Photoshop, then apply all the Photoshop upgrades from scratch.
But first, give us details about your setup:
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
Note that this is boilerplate text.
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
A screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,
    etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster, who is not a Windows user).

  • Slow download in ssh session

Hi, I hope someone could shed some light on this one...
The setup: 2 boxes, one acting as ssh client, the other one as ssh server.
The problem: When I ssh to my box on the internet, any download initiated through ssh is painfully slow, only about 40 or 50 KB/s. Only when I download or upload files from/to this box without ssh, the speed is normal, that is a few MB/s.
    Examples:
    From my client box:
    scp filename servername:~
The file is uploaded fast, as expected.
    From my client box:
    wget servername/somefile
The file is downloaded fast, as expected.
    From my server box:
    wget somefile_on_internet
    or
    pacman -Syu
Download is fast only if I do this from local session (with keyboard attached to the server directly). When I do the same from ssh session, download is slow.
In any other aspect, ssh is working fine, I don't have any noticeable delay when typing and executing commands.
    Thanks!

I am using ecdsa. I am not sure about the key length, but judging from file size I think it is 521 bits.
I checked CPU usage on the server while downloading through ssh, and it is almost zero, 99% idle. Same on the client.
