Slow shutdown, restart, logout on MBP retina 10.9.3

I have been unable to shutdown or restart my MBP mid 2012 retina (2.6 GHz Intel Core i70, other than by holding down the power button.  I've tried, I think, almost all suggestions on this forum (safe mode, restore, repair permissions reset PVRAM. etc).  I finally got it to shutdown regularly by eliminating all Divx software on my computer (no easy task), but shutdowns and restarts still hang an unusually long time, about 15 seconds.
It was suggested I send console information just before my last BOOT_TIME to see if any process in the time after restart command and boot would give any hints.  Here are the entries, and there appear to be some problems but I cannot interpret them.  I have an external WD passport drive connected (which I can eject before restarting with no noticeable effect, and a USB hub, which I also disconnect to no effect).  Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.  I am about to give up...  I would like not to have to re-install the system software..  Thanks for any help!

Uninstall whatever McAfee product has been installed according to its instructions. There is insufficient reason to conclude it is causing any particular behavior but McAfee "anti-virus" products serve no beneficial purpose on a Mac and can only complicate troubleshooting.
Seagate's disk utilities are also unnecessary and have the potential to contribute to problems.
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light will cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Can't shutdown/restart/logout from Apple menu.

Hi. I just got a MBP, and I've only been able to shut it down from the Apple menu once (the first time I used it). Now whenever I select restart/shutdown etc... nothing happens at all. Even when Software Update prompts me to restart, nothing happens (my applications don't even quit). Keyboard shortcuts that are supposed to bring up the shutdown prompt don't do anything (all that works is the hard shutdown, CmdCtrlOn). The only way I've been able to turn it off goes thusly: I have to enable fast user switching, go to the login window, click the shutdown button there, and then enter my admin password to forcibly log out my account. Typing "sudo shutdown -h now" into the terminal also works, but it produces several errors that I'm unable to read.
I've reinstalled the 10.4.7 update, but that didn't do anything. I've deleted the Finder's preferences, and still no luck. I've had this thing for 2 weeks and if I already have to do a clean install then that is just ridiculous. Please help me out here!

I have also been having this problem, and did the easy stuff as well, but even tho I do have apple care, would rather only use them for major problems and stuff, and am curious as to if Bryce Lampe has found a solution at all or not?? I hope he is still checking this area for answers or would at least post another msg if he got it fixed and how he fixed it...

Help!! I'm using a Mid 2012 MBP retina 2.3Ghz i7 with 8GB of ram 256SSD. for the past 2 years my write speeds has been consistently on 400MB/s and up via black magic test. but now it only have 100MB/s going down to 80MB/s. what should I do???? I have already cleaned and even restored my MBP still it's on 100MB/s. please help. I have to finish tasks on a timely manner.

No. This requires completely repartitioning the SSD. You can do that only by using the Network Recovery method or the method I outlined. My method preserves all your data and doesn't require doing a slow Network Recovery. But if you wish to do that instead. The purpose of the whole exercise is to "clean" the SSD of garbage collected during use that tends to cause the SSD to slow down as you've described.
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button. Set Zero Data - one-pass, click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • How to disable GNOME logout/shutdown/restart beep???

Hello, when I logout/shutdown/restart and the volume is not mute, I hear a large beep sound which annoys me very much. I tried to untick alart sound in System->Preference->Sound, but it does not help.

That module only affects the system PC speaker. You say "when the volume is not mute[d]"; is the beep coming from the soundcard or the PC speaker? If it's coming from the latter, unload the pcspkr module (and be sure to unload snd_pcsp as well if you're on a 2.6.28 or higher kernel).

  • MacBook Late 2008 (Unibody Aluminum) running Lion cannot shutdown, restart, or logout

After upgrading to mac os x lion, my macbook has not been able to restart or shutdown or even logout properly. This problem was not present when the laptop was in snow leopard. Currently, I am able to do a shutdown through the terminal by using the command:
    sudo shutdown -h now
or restart by using the command:
    sudo shutdown -r -h now
This is fine for most situations but when I am trying to install an update or a program that needs a restart, I am unable to do so. When still at the login screen, I am able to shutdown properly leading me to think that a process is preventing shutdown but I can't find anything in the console. The power button also becomes unresponsive (normally pressing it brings up the window asking whether to shutdown, restart, etc.) and can only be used to do a forced shutdown (i.e. holding it down for 10 seconds). The sleep, restart, and shutdown functions in the apple menu also do not work.
    Any ideas anyone?

  • Windows 8 slow on MBP Retina 15

i just got MBP retina 15 and installed windiws 7 pro on it via bootcamp and win was running smoothly. I then upgraded to windiws 8 pro and it stucks/freezes frequently like if i make a new folder or sometimes oopen ny location like c drive or my documents or my pictures it just stucks and waits and waits and then opens it. I then removed entire windiows and restored partition to mac os x and then installed windows 7 and upgraded to windows 8 but i am again having same problems ... its slow in response, not always but most of the time and the mouse pointer gets busy and busy and busy and finally opens the application .... from some other blogs i have tried this with on power and on battery but the result is same !! has anyone faced such an issue and how did it get solved ??

hi all, i have found a strange thing with this issue... i have tried thsi many times and now im sure that this happening because of this .... when i use windows 8 with power plugged in then the windows gets stuck repeatedly, the mouse curser hangs and after a minute or so it starts to work but it again happens after sometime.... when i remove power (MBP running on battery) windows 8 run smoothly without any delay !!!! i have tried this even now ... i was unable to type this as it gets stuck again and again and now i ve removed power supply and now its working fine ........... has anyone experienced same thing with MBP retina 15 ???

  • Where is the shutdown/restart buttons from the logout dialog

After I followed the almost all postinstall in Howto(s) from Archlinux Wiki, I lost the shutdown/restart buttons from the logout dialog box.
    Where are they?
    I set in the kcontrol:
KDE Components -> Session Manager -> General (Offer shutdown options) and Default Shutdown Option (Turn off computer)
    has no effect.
Could someone give me a hint?
    Thanks.
    Regards,

    export DISPLAY=localhost:0
I did not read it carefully
    I put
    xhost+ localhost
    export DISPLAY=localhost:0
    together in my user .bash_profile
    I should split this:
    xhost+ localhost
    in my user .bash_profile
    and
    export DISPLAY=localhost:0
    in my root's .xinitrc
    That should do the job.

  • MacBook Pro won't restart, shutdown or logout once in a while.

From time to time I want to restart my computer and when I do it it doesn't restart. I even try to shutdown or logout and it doesn't do it as well. I have to hold down the power button to shut it down completely. Why is my computer behaving like this once in a while?

    The most likely explanations are:
    1) something that it is connected to - a network (even just another computer on occasion) , or a USB or FW peripheral (printer, hub, external drive, memory stick etc that doesn't fully comply with the relevant USB or FW protocols ).
    2) Background software that runs at such a time -= maybe a virus checker, drive scanner, etc etc.
    Cheers

  • MBP C2D shutdown/restart problems

I have had problems with my new C2D 2.33 MBP. recently it would not shut down/restart. i played with things are discovered that if i turn off the airport before shutdown/restart then it proceeds normally, but if my airport is on while i try to shutdown/restart then it will go to the blue screen and stay forever then i have to do a hard reset. Does anyone else have this problem? Anyone know why so many problems with Airport this time around?

Based on your description, it may suggest a conflict within permissions. You can verify permissions to see if your system identifies a conflict or otherwise perform the repair. The process will not compromise or harm anything with your Mac so it’s worth a shot.
    Repair Permissions:
    Go to: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
    Select: your Hard Drive
    Select: the First Aid tab
    Select: Repair Permissions

  • MBP Retina Random Restarting

    Hi Guys,
I've been finding recently when I've been turning on (lifting the lid) my mid 2012 MBP Retina that it is reporting I have restarted from a error.
Tonight however it restarted whilst in use, Im a DJ and it was in the middle of my set, killing the music and making me look very very stupid in front of a thousand people!
I've got the log here and was wondering if anyone knew the cause of the restart, I can't be running the risk of this happening again!
    Thanks for your help!

  • MBP Retina 15" Unused for 2 weeks now slow, unresponsive?

    Hi all,
Hoping someone can help. I've been away on vacaction for 2 weeks - before I left I shut down my MBP retina and left it in a drawer.
Upon returning today it booted up normally, then immediately

any chance it is trying to backup to a TimeMachine drive?  That can make things slow?  If it is the icon in the menu bar will be turning.
What about indexing the drive?  This would be indicated by the magnifying glass for Spotlight pulsing in the menu bar (very far right).

  • My MBP Retina 15" shutdown when I plug it with Power adapter.

My MBP Retina 15" will auto-shutdown when I plug it with Power adapter.

  • MBP retina slow Safari when connected to Buffalo

    Hi.
I am new to Mac world. I recenlty purchased MBP retina. As soon as I brought to home I connected to WIFI (broadcasted by Buffalo WZR-HP-G450H) and noticed very slow Safari despite uncompromized internet connection. It is always written Sending request at bottom left corner of the Chrome window (same in Safari).
I checked on Windows machine, ipad and and experienced instantanous page loading. I switched back to old TP-Link and got very fast page loading in Safari and Chrome as well. It is very frustrating because I need Buffalo for transfering HD videos wireleslly to my TV and cant use the old TP-link router.
So, could you tell me what is the problem that MBP retina' is very slow downloading pages on Buffalo but quick on old router? Am I destined to have slow brosing speed on Retina?
    Thanks for your help.

This isn't customer support - this is a user-to-user forum. You can contact Apple's customer support by calling the AppleCare phone number: find your country here - http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57.
I don't know anything about Buffalo routers - but it sounds as if the router is the problem, since your 'old' router works well.
    Sorry,
    Clinton
