Slow signal strength fluctuation and up/down client link

I have completed installation and configuration system which consist WLC5508(HA),MSE and WCS (all soft are last version). APs - 1252 a/b/g/n. But have problem, some clients have a slow signal strength fluctuation and up/down client link per 1hour or 30minuts. I see that this occur, when client change AP, but I can't understand why because client are not roam, they on the one point during all time (laptop on the table for test).

Signal strength measurement is not an industry standard measurement, although dB and mw conversions are a defined standard in the aspect that 100mw is always 20dB not every client card software defines an RSSI of -67dB to be excellent.
So the validation of signal strength can vary widely in the client card software between brands and even between models, or between software releases. So there are a number of factors that play into this also keep in mind that each client cards driver software has it's own roaming behavior, that varies as widely as its depiction of the signal strength values.
Additionaly power save functions and the antenna type in the device can all affect the perceived signal strength and roaming behavior.
So the flux your seeing could be a result of the any of the following items or something else
network design: meaning possibly there is insufficent coverage and the flux you are seeing is actually multipath.
Client Card: Some client cards just don't perform well and have sub-standard components that impact performance
Driver Software: some driver software is just bad, it has poor algorithims, poor logic, etc.
Bad antenna: the antenna in the device could be of poor quality or defective.
Hope this helps...

  • Signal strength fluctuation

    Hi all,
We are installing a WLC-4402 with 1252 APs connected; they have been working ok; but we have a problem with a Lenovo x61's wireless laptop card; the signal strength of this client fluctuate (up and down) each few seconds (sometimes it gets disconnected even though it is located very close - 20 feet - to the AP); has anyone experienced the same problem?

Check to see if you have any co-channel interference of some sort. You should see the "signal strength" meter flunctuate here and there. It's the wifi card that is negotiating best signal. If you see the signal drop to like 5.5mbps 2 mbps, usually it is noise around the area.

  • Slow to start up and shut down

    Hi.
I have updated MacBook Pro from 2.16 GHz with OS 10.4.11.
The old one started up and shut down very fast. Now my new 2.4 GHz one starts up very slow.
I see the gray screen forever till finally see my desktop. It happens even I installed the OS on a cleaned HD.
Cleared all the cache, there is no log in items.
    Reseted the PRAM.
    No problem with Disk permissions.
    Both 1GB memories are recognized.
I did everything I could think of.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong ?
I would be much appreciated if any one know !
    Thank you.

    22 sec startup
Definitely an improvement over our old IBM AS/400 mainframe that once took six (6) hours to start up after a bad shutdown....

  • Why is it slower to boot up and shut down

For the last few months, at least since I updated to Mac OS 10.7.3 (this may not be related), I have noticed that the boot up sequence is a lot longer (4 to 5 times) than it used to be.  Although not as extreme, the shutting down sequence is also taking a lot longer than previously.  My software updates are always done and I run VirusBarrier X6 and BOINCManager in the background.  Is this normal or is this symptomatic of a problem?  Thanks

It's symptomatic of a problem. You might start with:
Boot into Safe Mode and do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported. Then click on the Repair Permissions button. When it completes then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
If this does not help then create a new user account. Log into the new account and then see how startups and shutdowns go. If things have improved you have issues created in your normal user account.
I would also suggest uninstalling software like VirusBarrier. Unless you require BOINC software I'd uninstall it, too. Also, check your Login Items in Users & Groups. These can prolong both startup and shutdown.

  • HELP!! This accessory is not optimized for this iPhone. You may experience noise interference and a decrease in cellular signal strength

Ive seen loads of people with this issue and no luck.
Basically as of yesterday, The message
This accessory is not optimized for this iPhone. You may experience noise interference and a decrease in cellular signal strength"
appeared and wont go away. I have nit used my headphones for a month so i cant think of anything that has triggered it.
    Solutions I have tried..
Making sure my phone isnt on mute.
Letting the power dye and re charging.
    plugging in head phones etc.
    Still no luck.
    Model is iPhone 3GS 16GB.

My mum's phone had that message too. I googled it. Sometimes the connection becomes dirty due to dust, dirt, water or a combination of all three. It is recommended to clean out the connection using a clean, dry brush, like a paint brush.
    It worked for her
    I hope that this helps

  • Is Lion slow booting up and shutting down?

After I installed Lion, my macbook pro is slow to boot up and shut down.  How can you turn off "re-open windows when logging back on"?

The beeps on startup are often indicative of RAM problems.  The opening chime is the only normal noise on startup.  Shutdown should be essentially silent.  To the Apple store, PRONTO!
    Ciao.

  • Mid 2010 iMac Wifi signal strength issue

I am having issues maintaining a robust Wifi signal on my 21.5 inch 2010 iMac with 10.6.5 installed.
my symptoms are very similar to what is described in this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2596933&tstart=0
in addition to that I am experiencing the following symptoms:
can't print to HP wireless printer
remote app for iphone doesn't find the iMac
mobile mouse remote app doesn't find the iMac
can't ping the iMac from Windows laptops on the same subnet or from the router itself
accumulation of send and receive errors in Network Utility
these symptoms occur after the machine has been connected to wifi for 30 minutes or so. Turning off Airport and turning it back on temporarily fixes the issue. the Mac firewall is turned off.
as reported in the post mentioned above, signal strength for my Windows laptops and other devices is consistently -25 but the iMac signal strength fluctuates wildly.
One more troubleshooting step that I have taken is to install Windows 7 on a boot camp partition to rule out the iMac hardware and physical location as the issue. While booted into Windows the iMac did not exhibit any of the above symptoms and held a steady -25 strength signal.
Lastly I am using a TrendNet Wireless N Access Point but have also tried an Apple Extreme and Express (both N). I've tried 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz on various channels. I've even tried dialing down to G mode.
I've read other posts about DNS settings, Static instead of DHCP addressing, etc. and none of these has solved this issue.
    Thoughts anybody? TIA

Update concerning additional troubleshooting steps that I have taken.
    1) did a clean install of OS 10.6.3 onto an external drive and managed to replicate the issue....so that rules out apps, preference files, etc.
    2) managed to get a little bit more stability by setting up an Airport Express in 5Ghz mode with Interference Robustness turned on and the multicast rate set at 9Mbps....of course ios devices don't do 5Ghz so I still have to run another AP...so not an acceptable solution.
What else do I need to do to prove that it's a Mac OS software issue?

  • EA6500 Signal Dropping off and restarting on its own

Hi Community, I have a EA6500 AC1750 linksys wireless router.  I recently purchased a new Motorola Modem it is the motorola sbg6782-ac modem.  I have the modem in Bridge mode and the wireless networks on it disabled so that I can use the Linksys AC1750 wireless router as I need to the extended range of the router as my office is upstairs where my internet cable access point is.  I have 10 devices connected to my router, however, I have a 30mbps package from Time Warner.  I can say that I have had a noticeable increase in speed and performance since purchasing the Motorola modem, it's been installed for about a week and the signal has better consistency and quality.  However, I have noticed some funky acitivity with the Linksys router.  I had to previously restore to factory default settings about once a month as the communication between the Linksys and the old Arris Modem from TW that I had was just nonexistent, it seemed like when the lease time expired the communication between modem and router would reset and then I would need to reset to factory defaults in order to reset the communication so it worked properly.  After week 1 with the Motorola that does not seem to be the case as it seems much more consistent.  However, today I was working next to the router and I noticed the Linksys rebooted randomly, and the modem never flinched, since the reboot today I have noticed that the signal is fluctuating with ranges down to 32mbps and then up to 180mbps, however when I work next to my router the speed is a consistent 450mbps with 5 signal bars.  I know the range has something to do with it, but the random rebooting and signal speeds going up and down makes me think it is in some kind of power save mode or something, I can't find anything in the settings that suggests that but that is what it seems like to me.  Please let me know if there is anything in the settings of the router that needs to be adjusted.  (on a side note, I use a VPN connection to work from home on a day to day basis, in addition, I make a lot of VOIP calls and do a lot of webex conferencing using my internet connection.  Also I do use xbox one where I am using matchmaking and playing online)
    Thanks in advance

Hmm. There could be some wireless interference or conflict with other networks or devices. I suggest that you try changing the wireless channel. I am using channel 9 for my EA4500 router, but you can also try other channels and see which one suits your network setup. What’s the current firmware version of the router?
If it has an up to date firmware, you can relfash it to make sure that there’s nothing wrong with firmware that was uploaded. Simply download the firmware file and manually load it to your router.

  • How to measure LTE signal strength?

Ive used LabView for years but have been away a while.  so much is new.    Can the USRP be used for testing LTE mobile signal strength? and decode various fields like mibs and sibs? signal to noise?  CIR?  if not, is there something that is able to?
    thanks

    Hello Bradley,
Here is a short video showcasing one application involving NI Software Defined Radio for an 8x8 LTE MIMO, along with an article describing the application:
    http://zone.ni.com/wv/app/doc/p/id/wv-2864
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/14311/en
    http://electronicdesign.com/4g/getting-ready-8x8-mimo
There is a lot of additional information about USRP available at the following sites:
    http://www.ni.com/sdr/
    http://www.ni.com/usrp/
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/8787/en
Note that the LTE application above utilized the FlexRIO with FPGA in their system.  Using the FPGA allows you to fully customize your I/O to match the needs of your application, such as ensuring you have the bandwidth to handle LTE.  USRP products have tunable center frequency options from 50 MHz to 6 GHz, which includes the frequency spectrum of LTE measurements.  What exactly do you want to try and do with USRP and LTE?  Are there any products in particular that you are interested in?

  • Looking for VZW 4G tab-cell signal strength widget/app?

The 4G signal strength bars in the task bar of the VZW 4G tab don't quantify the strength of the 4G signal and I'm looking for something that will do better.
For background I have a 4G modem [VL600] and use VZAccess Manager which does give a 4G readout [called RSSI] in db so we know its possible to get a value.
I've searched the market for "cell signal widget" and have tried everything that looked promising-nothing worked on the tab.
Anybody got any suggestions for something that may work?
    Thanks.
    Jim Kirk

I do not think there is a app that can access and read the 4G (LTE) signal information... This was covered at http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-htc-thunderbolt-forums/104759-way-see-4g-signal-strength.html and it was reported that this does not seem to be possible at this time.

  • When I switch off cellular data, I still get signal strength dots.

New iPhone 6 here and going through settings I noticed that I still get signal strength indicators and Verizon name in the upper left even when cellular data is turned off. Should this be happening? I turned the phone off and then on with the same results.
    I'm running iOS 8.02. iPhone 6 128g.

Thank you folks. You see, I normally travel with my iPhone and iPad. Much of my surfing is on, of course, my iPad and I have on occasion, turned off the cellular data. On the iPad, the signal strength and logo goes away. Last night at the MBP, I was playing with features on the phone and noticed what I described. I initially had thought there was an issue because I had read about excessive data usage with the new phone.
As you fine folks pointed out, this is the way it's supposed to be. Thank you for your replies.

  • IMac wifi signal fluctuates between -24 and -80 other clients stable.

I'm experiencing Airtunes dropouts. The problem seems to be fluctuations in signal strength as shown in the screenshot in this link: http://gallery.me.com/alex.slaets#100343/wifi&bgcolor=black .
    Network:
3 Airtunes express in 802.11n only 5 GHZ mode, configured to extend the range of one wireless network.
    Clients:
    1 iPad.
    1 iMac.
All software and firmware is on the very latest version.
    Observation:
As shown in the image, the signal strength S/N remains stable at -24/-95 db for all clients in the network EXCEPT the iMac (22:FF) which fluctuates between -24 and -80 in 5 to 10 second cycles.
The iPad (C8:FB) is located near the iMac and its signal, remains stable.
Any ideas on what this might be ?

    any cordless phones nearby ?
perhaps one of your neighbor's wireless networks is interfering with yours. download iStumbler (free) or AirRadar (it has a trial period) and note the channels other networks in your vicinity are broadcasting on. *change the channel(s) of your network as far away as possible from those*.

  • Droid 2 Global Massive Signal Fluctuations and unreliable data speeds

I've had my Droid 2 Global since January now, and have been using it in Burlington, VT where I go to school since the middle of January, and speeds have been a bit slow, but technically within verizon's average speed estimates of 600-1400kbps on average. However The weekend before last my phone started getting really good signal consistently, always 4 bars, and 1200-2400kbps down nonstop day and night all weekend, which was honestly what I was expecting from Verizon all the time anyway given that my signal strength was always stronger than -70dbm where I was, and so I was happy. However Monday came and the signal became terrible again, ping went up to 500-1300ms, speeds were well below 600kbps all the time, and though speeds improved over the week, they never really reached what I would call normal until the weekend. But around that time my phone started jumping from G to 1x a bit and last night around 4 the phone freaked out, switched G and 1x constantly, couldn't use the market or speedtest or anything. I did a factory reset in the morning since the problem was still there, but then the phone refused to activate, and when I set it to "home only" mode for roaming it found no signal. Eventually when I was on the phone with Verizon support the phone activated, and G seems to be working okay now, but I still have jumpy signal, within my one dorm room, even if the phone is sitting in one spot next to me, it will happily jump from 4 bars to 3 to 1 to 3 to 2 to 1 to 3, all within a minute or 2. As a result speedtests show highly unstable download speeds. I am wondering if Verizon has a way to determine if it is my phone that is having issues or if it is the network up here. I get great signal when I go closer to the tower and don't usually have problems there, though speed can still be super slow sometimes.
Sorry for the rant, just wanted to explain what's kind of been going on and get some feedback, some people are saying it's my phone, some the network, and the only ideas I've gotten are to go right below the tower and see if I have issues there, but if I don't, then either there is interference between my dorm and the network, or there is something wrong with the phone, but if the network is the problem then I wonder why sometime signal is stable, such as the weekend before last. Anyway thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Just to confirm, when you say switching "G and 1X", you mean "3G and 1X"?
If it is actually saying "G", that means that you are picking up a GPRS signal from a GSM carrier, which would be very slow.  Unless you have had a major ToS violation (DroidBandUnlock), you shouldn't be picking up US GSM, so this would have to be a weak signal from Canada....

  • IPhone 5s call signal strength is 3 bars and my calls are breaking up?

I switched from an iPhone 4s to an iPhone 5s and now my iPhone signal strength is 3 bars and my calls are breaking up? what gives?
I live on top of a hill in a major metropolitan city and my carrier has always been Verizon and my call signal strength has always been 5 bars and occassionally on a cloudy rainy day I had 4 bars. Since upgrading to the 5s my call signal strength at my home has never gone past 3 bars even when Wi-Fi is connected. When W-Fi is turned off and LTE service kicks in, the call signal strength flutters between 2-3 bars and if I am on a call, the person on the other end is telling me I am breaking up.  This has never happened with my iPhone 4, my iPhone 4s.  Is anyone else noticing signal problems?

I am also having the same exact issue. I had an iPhone 4S with Sprint servince and always had at least 4 bars of service (4 dots after iOS7 upgrade) and I am now fluctuating between 1 and 2 dots on my new iPhone 5S. I am also having people I am on the phone with tell me that I sound like I'm in a tunnel and or that I am breaking up. I am also hearing the breakup of voice service even when speaking to someone on a landline. I took my first iPhone 5S back to the store and traded it in for a new one and am having the same exact problem with this new 5S phone. I was told by the salesman at the store that the problem was due to the 5S is using different towers than the 4S and that the new towers for the 5S were still being implemented. Do I know this to be true or necesarily believe this? No. Do I hope it's true or that Apple will come up with a fix for this problem in the very, very near future? Yes. Apple, what is going on with my service? It's obvious that it's happening to users from all of the major American networks.
