Slow since lion upgrade

since i've upgraded to lion. my macbook is slow!!! also iphoto very slow and blacking out photos when trying to use them for editing. the screen goes blank. any help is appreciated:)

Test iPhoto in the other account. You can put some photos in Users/Shared from your normal admin account. Then switch back to the test account and test on those files. If iPhoto seems to work fine, then log back into your problem account.
Quit iPhoto.
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library".
Then go to Preferences folder and delete com.apple.iPhoto.plist
Relaunch iPhoto and test.
iPhoto shouldn't do that, but you are running on a bare minimum of RAM. The requirement says 2 GB but IMO 4GB is a minimum for effective performance. Add RAM, it cheap & easy. You can use the wizard at Crucial to find the modules you need.

  • External firewire 800 Iomega HD too slow since Lion Upgrade

    Hi all,
Since my upgrade to OSX Lion im having the issue that my external Iomega HD is too slow to even playback my song (only audio files, About 9 Tracks of them). I removed all 3rd party plugins but the issue still occurs.
Is anyone experiencing the same issue? Any ideas on how to resolve it?
    System:
    iMac Middle of 2010
    4GB 1333 Mhz DDR 3 Ram
External Harddrive is a iomega 1TB firewire 800 disk.
With Snow leopard it worked well... Maybe i was too fast with updating this time...
    Cheers

    Sorry little addition:
It s about an external fw hd working with Logic- not in general slow performance.

  • Wireless slow since Lion upgrade

Is anyone else finding that their wireless is slow after updating to Lion?  My desktop is plugged in and fine which leads me to believe it's not Comcast but my laptop, iphone and apple tv all of the sudden are not working well.  Especially the apple tv.  Did something change in the update that would affect the wireless router?

I use only wifi, and my laptop is fine.
Have you noticed any new wireless networks popping up in your area?
Wireless networks can be slowed down by interference.
Eg: If you have new neighbours, and they recently added a wireless network which is close enough to your network, they will interfere with each other.

  • Screen saver won't start since Lion upgrade. Two different machines, same issue.

Screen saver won't start since Lion upgrade. Two different machines, same issue. Help

For anyone following this thread, I've found a solution to my problem. Turns out that a cute widget called FishTank appears to be the culprit. With it running in Dashboard (even when I don't see Dashboard) the Screensaver and Sleep functions don't work. I turned it off, not because I'm clever, just because I tired of it, and voilà, Screensaver and Sleep are now working. It can stay in my widgets list without any problem, it just can't be turned on. I'm going to delete it anyway, however.
Hope this points the way to solutions for some of the rest of you!
    Cheers!

  • Why is my iphone 3g slower since software upgrade...

I know other people who have complained about the same thing that the 3g is slower since the software upgrade a few months back. Why? Everything on the phone is a tad slower since the upgrade. Weren't upgrades designed to improve the performance, not decrease it?

are you up to date with the siftware?
do you have a lot of memory left?
have you tried a hard reset? a reset network settings? a restore?
all can be done to try to resolve the issue, try those first before giving up

  • Mid 2009 macbook slow since yosemite upgrade

I am getting a little tired of the spinning beach ball, my formerly well performing macbook is so slow since I upgraded it.
I have 4Gb ram, activity monitor suggests I am not low on that.
It is particularly slow when I start up anything new; when an email comes in the whole thing grinds to a halt.
3rd party programs like Chrome seem to be sucking the life out of it, I have checked it is up to date and it is.
Is this a common experience and what have others done to speed things up?
System spec: Yosemite version 10.10, processor 2.13 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb SDRAM
    15Gb disk space free.
    I have repaired disk permissions.
    Maura

The large number of problems with System items looks suspicious: I'd strongly suggest a reinstall of Yosemite. (Make sure that you have a backup of all your files; e.g. a Time Machine backup.)

  • Time Machine slower since Lion?

I don't know if any of you have noticed as well, but since Lion my TM on my MBP is WAY slower than before. I mean it's taking more than 10 minutes to clean up after a 50MB backup...
During this time kernel task and mds are taking up about half the CPU.
Before you should ask, the Lion migration took place more than a week ago, it HAS finished indexing... ;-)
    Any thoughts?

    I had the same issue.
I use an external USB hard drive for time machine and had backups from Snow Leopard stretching back about four or five months. After upgrading to 10.7 it seemed as if time machine kept reindexing and reading the entire contents of my disk before and after every backup. It would take several minutes for the copying to even start and finishing off the backup would also take up to five or even ten minutes for relatively small data sets of around 50-100 MB.
As an experiment I made sure that all my data was safely backed up on another drive, repartitioned the USB drive and started over with a fresh time machine partition. Now backups are just as fast as they used to be. Might be something with my previous configuration that confused time machine into making deep scans or reindexing after making a restore point...

  • Mac is much slower since the upgrade to 10.8.3  freezes and opens up slow accompanied by the beach ball

Since leaving snow leopard and Mountain lion to Lion , it has been much much slower and freezes while doing simple internet browsing. a few of my apps won't work since the upgrade. Even when i boot up it takes a long while to log in.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

There is a huge discussion of this issue:
Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read...: Apple Support Communities
It is not caused by third-party software. The true cause is unknown, or at least unknown to me. It's either a hardware fault or a bug in Lion that only affects certain Mac models. Take the machine to an Apple Store for testing.

  • Midi / USB drop out since Lion upgrade!

Hi all, i have had great responses and success in the past with this forum, i really really hope this will continue.
I have been gigging using mainstage 2 and a M-Audio Oxygen midi keyboard controller for a few years now and until lately it's been fantastic. I will never go back to a stand alone manufactured synth. I am using a macbook pro, 2.93ghz with 8 gb ram. I initially upgraded from snow leopard to lion when it was launched but had to go back as Creative hadn't any lion drivers for use with my emu 0202 audio interface. Last month i found that they had done them and i re-upgraded to Lion. Since the upgrade i am experiencing Midi drop outs. This is to say that whilst performing i get an error message saying something like midi input device no longer available. This has happened a few times now but last night (new years eve!!), not only did i get this message which i sorted with a reboot but a few minutes later i had a midi note hang and i noticed that there was no longer any usb supplied power to my keyboard. The answer again at this stage was a reboot.
I would ideally not like to reinstall snow leopard as there are quite a few great things in lion which i would miss, but obviously if i can't resolve these issues i don't see that i have any other choice.
Any possible suggestions as to what may be causing these problems will be very much appreciated.
    Thanking you in advance
    Mark
    PS    Happy New Year

My experience with Lion was great for a while, it was effortless, everything I had attached still worked with no problems aside from needing occasional drivers.  Once Lion 10.7.2 was released, I updated my system and again, no problems.  If I recall correctly, 10.7.2 was released in October.  Suddenly in December, I began having random software and midi issues all around my system.  I do not use Mainstage but I have noticed others have had similar problems with various software and USB midi controllers, and have not seen a fix.
I regularly use Pro Tools 8, Ableton Live 8 and occasionally Reason 5.  I also have an M-Audio Axiom 61 and Korg padKontrol attached via USB.  After about 2 months of trouble-free operation, Live and Reason would not open and the accompanying software for my padKontrol no longer would either.  These apps would just "hang" and I would eventually have to force quit them.  In addition, Audio Midi Setup would also hang when attempting to switch to the midi preferences page.  Pro Tools still worked, but I could no longer receive midi signals.  I also use a wireless USB stick to connect to my home wifi signal and that no longer worked and neither did the accompanying software.
It's possible that there are deeper issues in your system as well as mine and the others having similar problems.
At times, I wonder if there is some kernel errors embedded in my computer.  I got my MacPro when Snow Leopard was fairly new and had numerous kernel errors resulting in many applications not functioning.  I eventually sorted them out but ran into similar USB related issues with the Snow Leopard 10.6.8 update, so I remained on 10.6.7 until Lion was released.
The only successful fix I've had is switching from Lion back to Snow Leopard 10.6.7 after erasing my entire hard drive.  I've tried reinstalling Lion through both upgrading from Snow Leopard and a clean install of 10.7.2 after erasing my hard drive again.
I believe my USB and midi problems stem from kernel errors somewhere but cannot find them (I have used Disk Utility many times).  I really liked using Lion but I lose so much functionality and my internet connection so I have determined that I will not be using it.  I may try Lion again when 10.7.3 is released but am wary.  If anyone has ideas on how to fix these issues, I would love to hear them.

  • Since lion upgrade iMac keeps looking for old server

    Hi,
I have a NAS prior to Lion upgrade which was working perfectly. Now with the Lion upgrade the NAS (Sitecom) ther were some issues. I have reinstalled the NAs and had given it a new name. I can find the NAs now so thats not a problem.
But almost every hour I get 2 warning that he can not find the "old NAS", it really start annoying me and I've looked everywhere and I don't even find any link (Finder) towards it so I don't know what to do to get rid of this message, receiving it every hour twice really start getting on my nerves.
    Sorry for th Dutch, but the message translates;
A problem has occured with connecting to the server 'VanBeeckNAS'
The server doesn't exist or is currently not available. Check the servername or the IP-address of the server, ...
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Peter

Same problem since lion. Not only can I not back up to the server it keeps looking for it several times on start up. Real annoying.

  • Cannot import Canon DSLR video since Lion upgrade

I use Aperture to import video from my Canon 60d DSLR.
Since upgrading to Lion, Aperture has designated all of my Canon h.264 clips as "unsupported video format." They will play in the QuickTime X Player, but nowhere else.
iMovie used to recognize video clips imported into Aperture and add them to the events list. Any videos added since my Lion upgrade remain unrecognized.
Has anyone else encountered this? Is this something either Apple or Canon have noted publicly? It's a total pain and it's verging on being a Lion deal breaker for me. I really want to be able to import my Canon clips into iMovie without jumping through hoops.

    SdeS,
Good idea to wait. I tend to be an early adopter on my MacBook Pro, but the other machines I use will stay on Snow Leopard for now.
It doesn't seem like a Lion/Canon incompatibility. Rather it is a more generalized issue with applications being able to handle video types. I've read reports of problems with Nikon DSLRs and Flip cameras too. There are multiple reports in these forums of the problem, but not too many, which leads me to wonder if:
People haven't experienced the problem yet; or
The issue is related to legacy code or codec components on the affected users machines, but which doesn't impact the vast majority of Lion users.
Still, it is huge problem as I would like to use my Mac to edit HD footage shot with my DSLR (or Flip camera for that matter).
You're right, Apple obviously missed something in their beta testing, because with respect to video, Lion doesn't appear ready for prime time.

  • IPhoto library not loading since lion upgrade

    Hi,
Since upgrading to lion, iphoto will not load the iphoto library anymore. iPhoto starts with the error message "your iphoto library is either in use by another application or you don't have permissions...". iPhoto was perfectly running on 10.6 (a few days ago) and luckily i have some time machine backups from before the lion upgrade.
    So i tried
-to start iphoto with option+control and rebuilt the library. Unfortunately it stops with item 9000 or something.
-tried to rebuild the library with iphoto library manager, but it causes so many problems with duplicates that i stoped the process. I guess it would probably fix the library but too much hassle.
-tried to restore the library from time machine -> same error message
Has anyone experienced same behaviour after upgrading to lion? It's too bad i can't just restore from the backup (i thought that's the point of having it) but may lead to the idea, that the iphoto application might be corrupted. I tried to download the ilife image from my university's software distribution server again, but last but not least, lion does not support the server version anymore "the version of server you are trying to connect is not supported...." So no download right now...
Thx for any help and hints
    regards, dorian

    Hello,
I am having this extremely frustrating problem as well. My iPhoto was working perfect two days ago and today after installing an upgrade (i always keep up with them) it refuses to load and all i get is a white gear looking shaped loading symbol.
    Help anyone....??
    Thanks!

  • Harddrive spinning nonstop since Lion upgrade?

Since my upgrade to Lion two days ago, my HD is spinning all but continuously. Significant change from how it was just the day before the upgrade.
    Any others? Ideas?

Have you found a cure for this disease yet? I'm in a similar situation but all queries seem to lead to dead theads.

  • Aperture running at a crawl since lion upgrade

I upgraded to lion and my Mac, including aperture, is slow and pausing often. Will this improve on it's own?

My Aperture is also running very slowly after Lion upgrade (latest Aperture-for-Lion upgrade is installed). Lion update occured on day of release so the Spotlight rebuild (as well as a TimeMachine huge backup) cannot be an issue any more. Moreover, cpu and mem stats do not suggest a system overload (config: early 2008 Macbook Pro, 2.2 GHz Core2 Duo, 4 GB RAM).
Issue is most obvious with large pictures, i.e. 16MP 16bit-TIFF from slide scans. Even simply rotating a pic takes ages, applying presets can take 30-60s. Loss of speed around 2/3.
No other performance issues with Lion though also in my case Aperture is the most challenging application I run.
This is annoying for professional users. I wonder whether Apple wants to kick itself out not only of video editing but also out of foto processing.
