Slow, Slow, Quick? no slow.

I am having broadband speed issues. I will try to cut a long story short but it has now been two weeks and no solution.
I have been a very happy customer with an average speed of 12 to 14Mb/s
Returned from a 2 week break and found that broadband speed was very slow the best being 1Mb/s and at worse 0.15Mb/s. While away we did leave the hub switch on.
Contacted the overseas call center for help and guidance. Got the usual list of things to try and we completed all of the steps, both wireless and wired. A forced reset was to be done and we would soon see a better speed. This continued all week with them ringing up to see how the speed was. During that week each time the same tests, wired and wireless, reset the hub and they would do a forced reset. Also discovered the during the week the broadband would drop out at random times, when the telephone rang or if an out going call was made. At the end of the week we had a lot of line noise. Br Friday I was getting a little annoyed at the whole situation as things were getting worse and no solution was offered. Late friday we were told that an open reach engineer would call Monday and to expect to pay £129:99 as ther was nothing wrong with the line or broadband connection!?!?
The engineer called as promised and could not do enough to help resolve the situation. A thorough check of the line did reveal a few possible problems which were resolved/repaired/replaced. I was shown how much better the line was and the speed I should be getting, 15 to 18Mb/s. I was advised that it may go done as things settle over the next few days.
The speed did infact decrease that very afternoon/evening, back down to 1 to 2Mb/s. Decided to call the help center again but his time we got through to the UK call center. Numerous line tests, hub resets, wired and wireless and to wait 24 to 36hrs. Still no improvement at all. Called them again and a repeat of the tests but no solution. In the mean time we got an IT expert to have a look at our computer. His tests showed up no virus/malware, no start up issues, no conflicts, hardware working and up to date drivers. He carried out a speed test connecting on our hub using his and our computer. They both showed the same low speed.
Called the UK help center again and reported no change and that our computer had been checked out and all appears to be working fine. The reply to this was a dismissive, " well I do not know who the hell he is or what qualifications he has got." Then the usual run of the mill tests, wired and wireless. The BT Wholesale test showed zero up and down load to which we were told that is wrong and the fault has to be with your computer. Not being very happy with the help or what felt like lack of we continued to force the issue of what is wrong and how to fix. It was then mumbled something about line variations and showing peaks and troughs at the exchange but, that would not be responsible for our speed issue. We were told that engineers would be working to resolve the variations at the exchange.
On with the tests results and our findings in the next post due to only allowed 20 000 characters.

Results as promised.
Distance from exchange 560m with no green cabinet, as per open reach engineer investigations.
Quiet line test result, very quiet.
I tend to use speedtest.net for my results as quite often the BT Wholesale times out a lot of the time.
Hub is a type 3
Here are the test results showing last night speed, this morning. Notice the huge increase and then drop like a stone in a short time period.

  • EXTREMELY SLOW XQUERY PERFORMANCE AND SLOW DOCUMENT INSERTS

    EXTREMELY SLOW XQUERY PERFORMANCE AND SLOW DOCUMENT INSERTS.
    Resolution History
    12-JUN-07 15:01:17 GMT
    ### Complete Problem Description ###
    A test file is being used to do inserts into a schemaless XML DB. The file is inserted and then links are made to 4
    different collection folders under /public. The inserts are pretty slow (about
    15 per second and the file is small)but the xquery doesn't even complete when
    there are 500 documents to query against.
    The same xquery has been tested on a competitors system and it has lightening fast performance there. I know it
    should likewise be fast on Oracle, but I haven't been able to figure out what
    is going on except that I suspect somehow a cartesian product is the result of
    the query on Oracle.
    ### SQLXML, XQUERY, PL/SQL syntax used ###
    Here is the key plsql code that calls the DBMS_XDB procedures:
    CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE "XDB"."RESOURCEARRAY" AS VARRAY(500) OF VARCHAR2(256);
    PROCEDURE AddOrReplaceResource(
    resourceUri VARCHAR2,
    resourceContents SYS.XMLTYPE,
    public_collections in ResourceArray
    ) AS
    b BOOLEAN;
    privateResourceUri path_view.path%TYPE;
    resource_exists EXCEPTION;
    pragma exception_init(resource_exists,-31003);
    BEGIN
    /* Store the document in private folder */
    privateResourceUri := GetPrivateResourceUri(resourceUri);
    BEGIN
    b := dbms_xdb.createResource(privateResourceUri, resourceContents);
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN resource_exists THEN
    DELETE FROM resource_view WHERE equals_path(res, privateResourceUri)=1;
    b := dbms_xdb.createResource(privateResourceUri, resourceContents);
    END;
    /* add a link in /public/<collection-name> for each collection passed in */
    FOR i IN 1 .. public_collections.count LOOP
    BEGIN
    dbms_xdb.link(privateResourceUri,public_collections(i),resourceUri);
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN resource_exists THEN
    dbms_xdb.deleteResource(concat(concat(public_collections(i),'/'),resourceUri));
    dbms_xdb.link(privateResourceUri,public_collections(i),resourceUri);
    END;
    END LOOP;
    COMMIT;
    END;
    FUNCTION GetPrivateResourceUri(
    resourceUri VARCHAR2
    ) RETURN VARCHAR2 AS
    BEGIN
    return concat('/ems/docs/',REGEXP_SUBSTR(resourceUri,'[a-zA-z0-9.-]*$'));
    END;
    ### Info for XML Querying ###
    Here is the XQuery and a sample of the output follows:
    declare namespace c2ns="urn:xmlns:NCC-C2IEDM";
    for $cotEvent in collection("/public")/event
    return
    <cotEntity>
    {$cotEvent}

    return

  • Muse slow to start and slow to react to commands - only recenty observed, rest of system and programs are fine

    Over the last week, since the problems loggin into the password server that authenticats the CC program login, the muse application is very slow to start and slow to resond to commands. Like its in molasses.
    My system has not changed, only the normal windows updates have been applied.
    Has anyone else seen this please ??

    Bad form answering my own question, but I think I found the culprit, I installed, beacuse I thought it was a good think and might be useful, Google drive onto my system. After deinstalling this program, the sluggishness that I experienced within Muse, went away.
    As this was the only new thing that I had installed, I think that it was the problem,

  • Io6 update lost Youtube in my iPad and is really slow and Facebook is slow and don't what to upload photo

    io6 update lost Youtube in my iPad and is really slow and Facebook is slow and don't what to upload photo the iPad is slow to.

    Youtube is no longer integrated with iOS. You can download the app fromt he app store.. it's designed for iPhone... but states that it works with iPad.
    As for running slow... trying holding down the power and home button at the same time for 10 seconds to do a hard reset.
    Also.. if you double tap your home button it will bring up a small window across the bottom of your screen... this is called the multitasker.
    Hold your finger one of the apps til they jiggle... then tap the red minus button to kill the app. If you kill them all this should help your ipad run alot faster.
    Good luck

  • Saving files in CS5.1 becomes unbearable slow very quickly.

    Let me start by saying, I really really really like Fireowrks for web visuals preperation works. It just does 95% of what I want to do in the way I want to work.
    I've search the web far and wide and found quite a few people asking similar questions, worryingly spanning many versions of Fireworks, but I still havn't found any sort of comprehensive answer
    I'm running a macbook pro
    OSX 10.7.3
    i7
    8gb Ram
    Fireworks CS5.1
    Plenty of space on my hard drive.
    Levels of undo set to 10 (ten)
    The symptoms seem already well documented elsewhere and mine seem no different.
    I create a file in Fireworks (approx 1100 x 2000px) create a website screen mockup, and then perhaps duplicate the framework to several more pages within the file and editing them to show different website pages. There is another issue that at some point Fireworks WILL crash, so I've got a long standing habit of saving very regularly (to the point of being OCD about it) I can live with that issue but the problem is that saving very soon becomes very slow to save.
    I can open up my file (34mb in totoal, 8 pages) from a fresh reboot, no other apps running and move one item 1 px and hit save and firework can take 13 seconds to save the file. As I'm saving because of the crashing issue, every couple of minutes, this 13 seconds is quite a big percentage of my time.
    If I "save as" and then restart everything from scratch (mac and app) and open the new file and do the same test its still 13 secs to do a save. If I delete 7 of the 8 pages and then "save as" again, the save time does drop to 5 seconds.
    Is this normal? I handle much much bigger files in different apps, such as photoshop, without this sort of problem.

    I've now upgraded my MBP to a SSD drive and the machine in general flies (opening Aperture down from  26 secs to just 3 secs) and I've installed the trial of Fireworks CS6.
    BUT...
    The problem is still there. Take a 36mb file using no symbols, move an item hit save and it still taking 10-12 seconds. So there its nothing to do  hardware - Its a real shame as Fireworks is close to be the ideal product but this major flaw makes it almost unusable in busy day to day environment

  • Macbook pro running slow, macbook pro running slow

    Hi.  My Macbook pro is about three years old and running slower and slower.  I'm not savvy with computers.  Are there any things I can do to speed things up?

    Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
    If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
    Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
    Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
    OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
    OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
    An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
    Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
              Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
              OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
              OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
              About file quarantine in OS X
    If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
    I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
    If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
    For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
        used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
        requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
    Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
    Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
    Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
    Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
    Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
    Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
    Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
    Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
    Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • A plea to Apple please fix slow finder, slow "save-as" options, slow address search in mail

    Like many I am adding my voice to those whose finder has slowed to a crawl, it takes many seconds for it to "see" a folder.
    I found one fix to the above at http://osxdaily.com/2013/11/13/fix-finder-slow-high-cpu-use-mac-os-x/which basically resets the com.apple.finder.plist file.  Thanks to the user who posted this.
    And the "save-as" function that is also very slow.  I have seen some work-arounds but I am not comfortable messing around in Terminal and would probably forget to get rid of a turn-around when an OSX update comes.  So apple please solve this.
    The mail problem is similar.  It is now quicker to drag an e-mail address from contacts into mail than typing in a name!  Apple please fix.
    None of these problems were there with Mountain Lion and judging from the hundreds of posts out there, it seems it can only be a Maverick issue.
    Thank you.

    I am in OSX Mavericks discussions so not sure where you get the "Which iPad" item from.
    I surmise it was from the link you provided.
    Most problems reported on this site are directly attributable to incompatible system modifications and poorly written or otherwise ill-conceived utilities. They exist in roughly the same proportion that have existed with every OS X upgrade since Jaguar, at least. Apple has no way to fix problems caused by software they did not develop and cannot control.
    If you are interested in solving your problems more information is required. Start by ruling out hardware defects, including an impending disk failure that would cause the symptoms you described. Back up your system if you have not already done so.
    To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting, assuming you are interested in doing that.
    Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
    When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
    Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
    Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
    Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
    It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
    Copy and paste its output in a reply.
    Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
    EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
    When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
    After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
    Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
    You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
    Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
    Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
    To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
    System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

  • Premiere Pro CS6 opening slow when connected to slow network.

    I recently setup a user with his computer running behind a VPN router so that he could work from home. The VPN router is used to give him access to local resources.
    A strange thing started to happen with Premiere where it would be very slow to open. Either it hangs on the splash screen for a few seconds to a few minutes or the splash screen loads normally but when the program opens, it is just white for a few minutes until it finally opens. If I try to click on the program Windows tells me that the program is not responding. Being that the premiere was working fine before putting the PC behind the VPN router, I feel like it had to be a network thing. I had the user momentarily unplug the Ethernet cable from the router and Premiere loaded up quick like it normally does. So when Premiere opens, it must be trying to access some local resources.
    The problem is I cannot figure out what that is. I went through all of the preferences and nothing is set to use a network resource. Media cache is set to us a local SSD. What else could Premeire be trying to access to launch?

    Premiere communicates with Adobe as it opens. I'm assuming it is verifying that you have an active account/aren't pirating the software. On my computer the maximum bandwidth usage is 1Mbps (that's bit not byte), so unless your VPN is incredibly slow, this probably isn't the issue. Maybe there's some firewall interaction that is limiting Premiere's ability to talk to Adobe as it launches?

  • Late MBP 2010: Does anyone find that startup is slower and system runs slower?

    I have a late Macbook Pro 2010 and once I downloaded the new OS X I've noticed that when I turn my MBP on at start up it is a lot slower and I have to wait 30-45 sec for it to get me to the main screen plus I've noticed my programs are running a little slower. Is anyone finding the same problem? Need help...how this is just a bug that can be fixed. Any ideas or fixes?

    After upgrading from Snow Leopard, you may find that older, incompatible software may cause the sort of problems you describe.
    Back up your documents and everything else important to you, not that there is any reason to believe your hard disk may be failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.

  • Why is my macbook pro running slow.  It runs slow even if only one app is open, especially if it's a browser.  I don't know how to read Etrecheck, but was hoping someone who does can help me out.  Would be super grateful.  :-)

    Hi.  This is my first time posting.  My Macbook Pro with Os X Mavericks has been running super slow since before I installed Mavericks so I'm pretty sure it's not the OS that has the problem.  It runs slow even if only one app is open, especially if it's a browser, particulary google chrome.  If mail is open...forget about it, down to a crawl.  I don't know how to read Etrecheck, but was hoping someone who does can help me out.  Would be super grateful.  :-)
    P.S. - Also, it sounds like something is loose inside my mac.  How should I proceed?

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • No Sound, Safari Slow & MacBook Pro Very Slow after upgrading to Yosemite.

    Hi All,
    Upgrading to Yosemite has resulted in the following issues with my computer/laptop:
    1. I have lost all sound and the sound options are no longer there after looking in Preferences.
    2. Safari only loads parts of pages and then takes forever to load the rest.
    3. Generally the computer has been slow with processes taking over the CPU and there seems to be a lot of hard memory swaps.
    Attached is the EtreCheck.    Any help would be appreciated.   It appears that I also am missing some daemons that are launching.
    Problem description:
    MacBook Pro has been running slowly ever since upgrading to Yosemite.
