Slow, Slow, quick quick, slow.
Here in the UK the Communities Support pages were down for 10 hours today for maintenance. Whatever they did that took so long seems to have reacted badly on the system. Moving from section to section, even page to page has suddenly become very slow most of the time ... with just the occasional flash of speed.
So what did they do and am I alone with this nuisance?
Hello ~Bee,
Fine by me, in fact something of a pleasure; I've added 4 years since I coined that name! Tell me, is there a link that tells me what Apple actually did that took all that time, what the improvements were.
Interesting that Klaus1 from southern England found a similar nuisance.

why are most of the apps (anything that has to search) on my iphone4 and ipad (1) running very slow (or not at all) since iOS5 update...esp google. Search seems to go quickly, but then when I try to open a link..nothing. I have turned off icloud.
I am having the same problem. Did turning off iCloud work? Did you just turn everything off or did you actually delete the account off your iPod?

I tried sending a smaller picture (about 300 kb) to some of my family members and before it got to them the computer timed out (very quickly, I might add) so it wouldn't send. We have fairly slow internet speed at times and when I was using XP, under tools there was a feature to increase the time so the computer didn't time out as fast. I had it set at about two minutes. I can't seem to find the same feature under tools in Windows8. I'd really like to be able to address this problem. Thanks for your help.
Pat SpelremYou could adjust the mailnews.tcptimeout preference, as explained in the 2nd point in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Can_not_send_large_attachments this article]. Also, make sure there's no security program scanning outgoing mail attachments.

I have a 2008 Macbook 2GHz 2GB that initially ran on Snow Leopard, and I upgraded it to Lion about 6 months ago. Since the upgrade, it has become slow to start up, open programmes and regularly stops responding - especially when I'm on the Internet - leaving me with the processing colourwheel, and forcing me to turn it off by the button.
I have tried repairing permissions and it doesn't seem to make a difference, could it just be that I don't have enough RAM (only 2GB) to run Lion? I don't want to revert back to Snow Leopard because I sync my laptop with my phone using iCloud, and Snow Leopard would complicate that.
I have also noticed that it heats up especially quickly and gets very hot, although I'm not sure if this problem is related or something to do with the version of Adobe or Microsoft Silverlight that I run on my Macbook.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks a lot!Honestly I would never run both Win 7 & XP at the same time in a VM. 7 needs at least 4GB to run properly and uses more resources then XP.
I personally use VMware Fusion and XP. At this time there is no software, that I'm aware of or use, that does not run on XP. So for my Mac Win VM purpose I only run XP with the software in need to use in Windows. This work very well for me. I have 2 CPUs and 3GBs of RAM assigned to XP. Leaving the other 2 CPU cores, 4 HT cores, and 5GBs of RAM for OS X.
Not sure why you need, or want, to run both versions of Windows at the same time. I don't see the need as stated above. -
A month or so ago FF starting taking forever to load any page using Google scripts, also Google search. Not always, about half the time, the other half the time FF works fine. Can go on and off like this three or four times a day. No discernible pattern. Pages without Google scripts and other search engines (Bing, Yahoo) always load fine with FF, only Google doesn't. Even while FF is slooowwwly loading Google scripts/searches, Chrome and IE load the same scripts and searches quickly with no problems. WTF?
I had this problem, I checked my add-ons one by one as suggested and it was the Avast online security add-on slowing me down on Google. Disabled it and FF works ok.
No idea why the avast add-on would do that? Still using the full version of avast but not the add-on. -
Very slow pasting data from the Clipboard into a Sharepoint 365 list by using the Quick Edit view
<p>In sharepoint 2010 it was very fast to paste data from the Clipboard by using the Data Sheet view. Why is it so slow in Sharepoint 365 when using the Quick Edit View? is there a workaround?</p><p>also in Sharepoint 365 if you try to
paste a large number of records (2,000) it will freeze.</p>I'm interest about same thing. Clipboard is often only way to migrate lists between sharepoint versions and now it is almost unpossible to use.

I've had a used MacBook Pro for the last two years. In the past 6 months it has taken a turn for the worst: slow, doesn't follow trough on commands, quits applications, dies very quickly, and safari has gone to ****. Safari feels like dial -up at this point: it loads very slowly if at all, can't handle multiple tasks, and requires constant reloading. I have moved a lot of my documents, all photos, some music, and whatever else I could put into an external hard drive and it hasn't changed anything . My desktop is clear and I never have more than 4 apps going at a time- honestly doesn't make a difference how many are open but I don't want to over work the poor thing. I have also tried checking the utility disk/drive thing, and "cleaned" my hard drive. What is the problem? Am I due for an upgrade or is my laptop on its last legs ? I have the 2nd to latest software on my computer. Any answer would be greatly Appreciated !
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
While investigating the problem, you may have started the computer in "safe" mode. If possible, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing. If you can only boot in safe mode, you can still use this procedure, but not all of it will work. Be sure to mention that in your reply, if you haven't already done so.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. The commands are safe and do nothing but produce human-readable output, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. I am not asking you to trust me. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; { o=$(( $(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256 )); [[ $o -gt 1024 ]] && printf "\nPageouts: %s MiB\n" $o; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; o=$(crontab -l); PR "User cron tasks"; o=$(cat /e*/lau*); PR "Global launchd configuration"; o=$(cat ~/.lau*); PR "Per-user launchd configuration"; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\nRestricted user files: %s\n" $o; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist"); ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s\n\t(%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}* L*/Fonts; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2>&- | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message. No typing is involved in this step.
Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2>&- | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
You can then quit Terminal.
To prevent confusion, I'll repeat: When you type your password in the Terminal window, you won't see what you're typing.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
Important: If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of these commands, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
Remember, Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your password. Also remember to post the output. -
RAM Used up quickly, Macbook Pro Becomes Slow
Over the past week or so I've noticed my Macbook Pro getting increasingly slower as the day goes by. Looking in activity monitor, my free RAM is often under a couple hundred MBs - and too often below 50MB. Figuring that I just had to clear up some inactive RAM left over from other programs, I purged the inactive RAM, but only to have it get used up again within minutes.
This hasn't ever been a problem to me in the past year that I've had my Macbook Pro, but now it becomes unresponsive very quickly. As an experiment, I booted up my laptop, and even then I had less than a GB of free RAM (never had that little upon bootup before). The only programs I have setup to start on boot are iTunes Helper, Caffiene, and Mail (Hidden). This hasn't changed in at least six months, so I know it's not one of these causing the RAM hogging.
Here is a log of my current Activity Monitor stats- after rebooting about an hour ago, the only programs I've opened were Chrome, iTunes, and Firefox. Everything was fine for a few minutes, then I noticed severe slow down and massive RAM loss, in addition to the cooling fans exceeding 6000rpm for a short while. Does anything here look abnormal?
*I should also note that I've verified the startup disk and repaired permissions, and the Page in/Page Out ratio is fine.

Ableton Live, a music production program, where ~500MB of RAM is needed to load some drum samples).
I had just installed Sophos Anti-Virus a few hours before my post, so that's probably running at startup along with a few others, which I will have to take a look at. Are there any other startup processes that you noticed that I should look into?
Lastly, I installed Final Cut Pro 7 about a week and a half ago. I only open it maybe three days out of the week, so I didn't think that's what would be causing it. However, there may be some background processes that are running even when the actual program isn't running. Can you spot anything like that?
updating the Mac OS X version was the fix for it.
I eventually will udgrade to Mountain Lion, but I would like to get this fixed first. I'm also looking at buying more RAM, but up until recently, 4GB was working fine. I couldn't have everything running, but the programs that I did have open ran fine.
Simple stop leaving program open that you are done using. Make sure you close the Program and not just close the window that the program is using. By default most Mac programs do not close when you close the window they are using. You have to manual close, Quit, those programs.
That's the thing though- I always close programs that I am not using (cmd+q, not just closing the window). I come from a Windows background, so closing a program entirely became a quick habit of mine! -

Incoming email to my iMac is incredibly slow - yet the emails download quickly to my iPhone - any suggestions? Thanks
This is an update from mariefromarnold:
I am now unable to download email to both my iMac and my MacBook Pro. I have accessed my verizon.net account directly and all of the emails are there. The issue appears to be that the messages will not download to either of these machines - they do download directly to both iPhones. Any suggestions? Thanks -

illustrator cc 2014 running slow, how can I make it quicker? file size is only 45.7 meg, I've newly installed a 512 gig solid state drive and 8 meg of ram into a mid 2009 Macbook pro. Surely it can go quicker than this.... help please.
Try This first...
Close All Open Apps... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

My production team is experiencing slow opening of relatively small files in Illustrator - the work around is to restart and then the same files open quickly. I ran system software upgrades recently, could this cause conflict with CS4? Photoshop does not act this way at all. We are a gift manufacturing company and some of our files are relatively large. I ran disc utilities to repair permissions and still slow opening.

saving after editing in elements 8 - this is painfully slow, including waiting through the "not responding" message, though after quick editing in organiser saving is very quick - what is the problem?
None of my pictures that I uploaded into iPhoto are in my Finder under Pictures. Should I copy and paste my folders from iPhoto into here, in case something happens to my iPhoto program (in addition to backing them up onto an external hard drive like I already do)?
No, that's just wasting space. A back up needs to be on a different disk.
Your photos are within the iPhoto Library. -
I have a problem when i open Safari.it takes a few minutes to open, the home page opens but if i try to open ( say Amazon) it just sits there for more minutes before opening ,but once it has opened i can switch from web site to web site very quick.can anyone tell me why this and is there anything i can do to
Try changing the "Top Sites shows:" to the smallest number possible. Safari is loading these sites when its starts so it can give you an image of what the site looks like when you start blank new window. A smaller number of sites will make that quicker, assuming the top sites do not have a very slow site in the mix.

Macbook Pro running slow and getting hot very quick
So I own a macbook pro, and i bought it last november. Lately its been running really slow, and it gets hot really quickly.
when i go to look at my storage, it says i have 435.14 GB free out of 499.25 GB so i dont think space is an issue.
What can i do to fix this? I can't get on my macbook for longer than 10 minutues without it getting hot, and it takes me forever to load pages, etc.
It's still fairly new so i dont see why i would be having problems already. I only really use it for school and some misc web surfing. can someone help me out please! You are still under warranty. Call Apple tech support. Let them deal w/it.

Mac OS X (10.7.4)
2x 2.26 Ghz Quad Core
16GB
The problem:
Logic 9 is responding really slow. Mute, Solo, copying, dragging, loading an instrument.
It all works with seconds in between, even moving the mouse a bit after pressing solo it will press the button where you are on at the moment after. All in 64 bit Logic 9.
The strange thing is, when i open the mixer (x on my keyboard) editiing a chanell and press solo, mute or load any effect or plugins its does work like it should! Quick! Instant!
When i play a project, the CPU peaks to the max but the HD indication remains almost zero. Loading to many plugins will make Logic even slower, but i'm running 64 bit mode and with 16GB. Checking Activity monitor, and only about 4 GB is in use. See screenshots below.
I did al possible thing read on forums, reorganising memory, undo steps, disk repairs, and so on. Spent hours reading the net...
So what could it be?
THANKS!
QuintinWho knows. Apparently faster doesn't mean faster. As can be seen in the thread below.
Why does timer code (by dbasnett) no longer work splendidly?
So an application is written in VB2010 and uses and is distributed with during install apparently an Access 2003 database which runs fast on startup on Windows 8 or maybe Windows 8.1 some style of PC yet the same app installed on Windows 7 PC's
either 32 or 64 bit doesn't run fast on startup.
Have you tried compiling the app to x86 to see if that alters its startup performance?
