Slow slower slowest

my intel-mac mini duo core 1,6 GHz, 1gB RAM is incredibly slow. I routinely repair permissions and followed the suggestion in this forum to reset by unplugging. All to no avail. My HD still has 10Gigs or free space so this is not the problem. True I run a lot of microsoft applications, Word powerpoint etc that need rosetta but even opening the HD or folders seems to take for ever, like scrolling web pages. This is annoying any suggestions ??
Thanks,
Marc

There are any number of things that you can try...
- Run Apple's Disk Utility to check for drive corruption.
- Run the hardware diagnostics that came with the Mac (on the original install disc, accessible by starting up from the DVD and by holding down the 'D' key... if I recall correctly)
- I also use a free program called MainMenu to run multiple maintenance tasks including flushing caches, checking for corrupt preferences, updating databases etc... Other programs like OnyX will do the same. It may or may not affect you or your problem but who knows....
- If possible, download and re-apply the 10.4.9 combo updater. Check your disk's integrity before installing (Apple's Disk Utility).
- Archive & Install from the original boot disk (followed by the usual updates). Select 'Preserve User & Network settings' if you'd rather not redo them.
- Keep your desktop relatively free of unnecessary icons - each icon represents a window and uses additional memory as a result. That being said, I've read that a slowdown that can occur from a cluttered desktop seems more directly related to constant log file writing as a result.

  • Slow Slow Slow emac: More

There have been some discussions over the past few months that apply to me:
+Slow Slow Slow eMac, Desperately need help with eMac, Can I salvage my e-mac, or is it time to upgrade to an iMac.+
Background: I have an eMac: Purchased in 1984: Panther 10.3.9 It's 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4; 1GB DDR SDRAM; 80GB HD; DVD/CD Superdrive. It came with 2@256 but I upgraded memory to 2@512 (crucial memory) about 12/2006. Of the 80GB about 23GB is left=~57 in use. Of this, a lot is in iPhoto, perhaps 26GB or so. We upgraded the memory as the speed was slow back in 2006, but it didn't markedly increase speed. We also have a 120GB LaCie drive (Firewire) that we put a copy of our eMac Hard Drive onto for back up.
I'm wondering how to get the eMac to be peppier/faster.
    Ideas/Questions/Issues:
    (1) _General Maintenance:_ The Slow Slow Slow eMac thread mentioned MacJanitor if the maintenance needs help. I did this: OK, but not much change. Perhaps it’s not altogether necessary as the eMac may normally run the appropriate scripts.
    (2) _Defragmentation Software_: Again, the Slow Slow eMac thread mentioned two things from the MacUpdate site: (1) a tool, +ShowVolumeFragmentation (0.80)+ that will show the level of fragmentation, & (2) a commercial tool to use to actually do the defragmentation work. (1) This tool didn’t load on my Panther machine & the +HFS Debug-3.10+ (a part of the ShowVolumeFragmentation tool) didn’t install, BUT perhaps it doesn’t matter because it might be good to just use a commercial defragmentation tool anyways. (2) MacUpdate identified a tool +iDefrag 1.6.6+ for (a) Demo which is limited to only 100MB drives & (b) a $35-$36 download version. Questions: (1) has anyone used this tool +(iDefrag 1.6.6)+ & if so does it work well; (2) is there another defrag tool that works well? The MacUpdate site brings up some others for the Defragment search; and (3) based upon my background information above, is defragging a reasonable thing to pursue?
    (3) _Tiger O/S:_ Not that anyone has suggested this, but would upgrading to the next—albeit not the most current—O/S be worthwhile?
    (4) _Panther O/S reinstall_: (a) +Erase & Install+ (b) +Archive & Install+. The Slow Slow eMac mentioned the +Erase & Install+, but it would erase everything. I understand that this would be effective as it goes back to a clean starting point, but what’s the experience & value in doing this (comment?). Perhaps saving everything on our LaCie drive first, then pulling back what’s needed would keep the process/eMac clean(er). (2) However, would the +Archive & Install+ method be effective? Pros/Cons?
    (5) _Other places to house iPhoto_: What’s the process & benefit of housing iPhoto on a separate Hard Drive?
    (6) _Other (General)_: Any other ideas &/or comments.
Prior to doing this I did copy my entire Hard Drive to the LaCie so that I had a back up. I then started deleting any old/unused stuff. I freed up some space, but the speed didn’t really change much.
    Thanks--gse

Hello, and welcome to Apple Discussions!
First, see if your model falls under this repair extension program:
    http://www.apple.com/support/emac/repairextensionprogram/
Your symptoms don't sound like it's haivng the probelms the extension covers, but still worth checking.
Your 1G of RAM should be adequate with Panther. That's enough to reduce virtual memory writes to the hard drive, which is good when free space on the drive gets small. However, your space is OK for now.
I understand that the Mac OS now handles defragging on it own pretty well. More farther down.
Use Activity Monitor ( in HD > Applications > Utilities ) to see if any odd applications you don't know about are eating a lot of processor usage. You want to change the view to "all processes" if it's currently set to "my processes." Post any apps that sound suspicious here before removing one; there are some things that are supposed to be running in the background.
Tiger will not make the computer faster by itself but will open access to newer software versions, especially browsers. The Dashboard Widgets and Spotlight that come with Tiger could reduce performance on a machine that's already acting up. You have a SuperDrive so installing from the Retail DVDs is no problem.
A great place to start is this third-party site hosted by one of our Level 4 members, Dr. Smoke:
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html
There is info on defragging is in the article titled Maintaining Mac OSX. Focus on articles whose titles have words such as "cleaning," "maintenance," and "troubleshooting." However, all the articles are good and you will come away with a much fully understanding in your Mac.
If the computer has been used for years with little if any maintenance and other maintenance procedures don't seem to help, a full reinstall to a nicely cleaned hard drive can help limber things up. As you have a full backup, this is not so daunting.

  • Just upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard - slow slow slow

macbook has slowed - molasses in winter slow.
slow to switch aps, slow to save, aps freezing requiring force quit.
have 1Gb ram and plenty disk space - 15Gb+

Snow Leopard should work fine on your system. First, if you're still at 10.3, install the 10.6.8 combo update from: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 . Use Disk Utility to repair permissions, then install the combo update, then repair permissions again.
Next, you have 15GB empty hard drive space ... you want 10% to 15%+ free for systems usage. If it's below 10%, then you need to free up space, otherwise the system will crawl.
Download Smart Utility from http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php . It will give you insight into the health of your hard drive.
Run the Apple hardware test to see if there are any obvious hardware issues. Find the original OS X disks, and insert the one that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot holding the alt/option key down (might work holding the D key down too), choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. While in the extended test, you might push command and L to make it loop several times. Sometimes hardware issues don't show up on one run.
This FAQ may help too: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/performance.html

  • Anyone else notice poor WiFi performance on iPhone 4 after IOS5 update? I have two iPhone 4 at home, slow slow downloads. One of them I've tested WiFi at work, Same issue. e.g. Apps take forever to download over WiFi compared to a AT

I have two iPhone 4 at home, slow slow downloads. One of them I've tested WiFi at work, Same issue. e.g. Apps take forever to download over WiFi compared to a AT&T-3G connection.

I have only just got an iphone 4 which I immediately updated to ios7 so have nothing to compare it with. But it doesn't even see networks that come up clear on the macbook. Same thing for a colleague in the same spot. previously I had an android phone which picked up just fine.

  • Apple TV slow slower slowest

When I first unpacked my Apple TV everything was fine but now a year or so later I can't stream from iTunes, or the iTunes store. When I try to sync my Apple TV I have to leave my computer on for days and it still never finishes the sync. I have tried factory reset after factory reset. I looked into the app firewall settings but nothing works. Do the drives in the Apple TV just have a limited use built in? All my software is up to date. The only thing I haven't tried is just disconnecting and putting it back in the box and forgetting the whole experience.

Sounds to me more like a network issue than an apple tv issue. Are you using wifi or ethernet?
If ethernet, what happens if you hook a computer up to jack your apple tv is plugged into? do you get decent internet downloads? what about copying files from one computer to another?
If wifi, have you tried moving the atv closer to your wireless source?

  • How can i revert back to an earlier version of Firefox? I have had nothing but slow, slow loading eversince I upgraded to4.01.1. I hate this version of Firefox. I hate the toolbar, it's a horrible colour and I can hardly read it.

Ever since I upgraded my Firefox to 4.01.1, everthing loads much, much slower.......I can go make a coffee while the page loads. Sometimes, it is soooooooooo slow, that it times out and I have to start all over again. Even when I sign on and load google, sometimes it takes forever.
I also do not like the toolbar at the top. It's grey and hard to read, what is wrong with white?
Can I revert back to the earlier version of Firefox? It worked much better. I use ancestry.com a lot and they even recommend a 3.??? version of Firefox.
Anything is better, so I don't have to sit and wait and wait and wait.

Thank you, Zenos. I tried rolling back to v31.2.0, since I had not encountered problems prior to December. However, that didn't help. So I followed your valuable suggestion to revert to v24.6; that seems to have done the trick.
I would like to mark this problem as "Solved" -- the rollback seems to have worked. However, since my original post was a complex mix of things, before I do that, should I post the individual problem sets that I had noted (address fields/nicknames problems -- numbers 1-3; default font problem -- number 4; attachment reminder problem -- number 5) as separate issues which have not been solved?
Do you know if these various issues are being worked on? I'm glad to have the temporary fix of rolling back to an earlier version, but I'd like to get back on the current update schedule at some point if and when these problems have been corrected.
    Thank you again!

  • Tiger Upgraded to Snow Leopard and computer runs SLOW, SLOW, SLOW

I have Leopardcy and itch'n for a cure! Has anyone loaded Snow Leopard onto a Tiger, 4.0.?? operating system? I was told I could. I backed up the info I had in my computger on an external hard drive first, then loaded Snow Leopard. Now it runs so slow I could cry. It took 90 seconds to open Pages, 4 minutes to get onto Safari. The Geek Squad at Best Buy store said to reload Tiger, but first back up the current info onto my backup with Time Machine. Questions: If I take Snow Leopard out and reinput Tiger, will Time Machine still be there?? Is it now in my external so it will work or ???? What will be the ramifications of reloading Tiger??
I may need more RAM, but I don't know how to determine that. Any ideas of how to figure out what it is?
Any ideas are most appreciated. Thanks,

It sounds like you have very very limited RAM and very limited free hard disk space.
The lack of RAM causes the OS to attempt to buffer information to hard disk. The lack of hard disk space causes everything to become 'slower than molasses' as the system tries to find free space available on the hard disk.
I'm wondering if you read the installation requirements before you installed Snow Leopard?
Snow Leopard minimum requirements are 1Gb RAM (but note that MORE is recommended) and 5-7Gb available hard disk space, just to install it.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Snow_Leopard_InstallationInstructions.pdf
Click on Apple, About This Mac, More Info. Memory shows how much RAM is installed.
Serial-ATA shows details about your installed hard disk but you have to scroll down to see how much disk space is in use and how much is available. If you have less than 10% to 15% of your hard disk free after installing Snow Leopard, you should get both a larger hard drive as well as more RAM (Snow Leopard runs pretty well in 2Gb).
Since it came with Tiger installed, I'm guessing you probably have a 2006 or 2007 1.83Ghz or 2.0Ghz MacBook with 512Mb or 1Gb RAM and an 80Gb or 120Gb drive. You can find factory specs for your model here:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/by_capability/mac-specs-by-machine-model-machine -id.html
TIme Machine was added with Tiger, OS X 10.5.x, so NO, *a Time Machine backup cannot be restored to Leopard, 10.4.x.* (And you now have a good reason to avoid that BB for future technical support.)

  • Slow Slow Slow page loading times using Iweb......

I used Iweb to create a photo gallery / web site and it loads very slow...I expect the images to load slowly but even the text hangs up a bit. It is worse on IE and the layout is messed up on Firefox....is there a way to make a website created on I-web uniform for all browsers and of course load and unload faster? I have cut my image files down in half ...they are about 400-600 kB (JPG) each but they still load slow...not to mention an annoying white block where the image and text is loading?? Any help from a seasoned I-web vet?

  • Flash sprite in Director: slow, slow!

It's not a new problem but maybe there's a new solution?...
I have a Flash game in a Director projector. The Flash games
works fine by itself (not embedded in Director), but inside
Director, everything runs much slower. Is there any ways to speed
    things up?
    Thanks
    Serge

Yea Flash tends to run a bit slower in director, be sure the
    default
direct to stage flash member property is set.
Mx 2004 has an updated flash xtra that runs a little more
    effeciently,
with an option to run multiple flash sprites in the same
    memory space.
There's a downloadable director update for flash 8.0

  • SLOW SLOW SLOW SBS 2011

    Hi --
I have an SBS 2011 Standard SP1 box that continues to be a major annoyance because of how slow and unworkable it becomes. This server is running on dual four-way 3-GHz Xeon processors, 16 GB of RAM and several terabytes of SATA-3 disk space. It is intended
to support the needs of THREE users. Right now, it is working essentially as installed; except for the antivirus program, all it's running is software installed by the SBS installer itself. It's providing file and print and email services to three users on
eight devices (three deskside PCs running Windows 7 Pro, two laptops (one running Windows 7 Pro, one running Windows Vista Ultimate), and three PDAs (two WM 6.5, one iPhone). And it does it dismally (except for email on Outlook and pushed to the PDAs).
Response times on this server start out passable right after the machine is booted and go downhill from there. Opening server shares or starting a remote desktop session might be OK after the server reboots, but after it's been running for a while it becomes
virtually impossible to get the machine's attention. Trying to open an OWA or RWA session is an ordeal no one wants to tackle. It can take one to two minutes after the user enters the URL for the challenge page to be returned from the server. And after the
user logs in, it can take up to six minutes for the OWA or RWA landing page to be displayed. From that point, response times on these apps are awful for the duration of the session. We haven't even attempted to set up and use SharePoint on this server yet.
The server and all other devices have gigabit connections to the LAN, with a 6 Mb pipe to the Internet.
The longer the machine runs, the more resource-bound it becomes. On Friday night, with none of the PCs logged in and no one logged in remotely (i.e. the only activity was Exchange pushing email to the PDAs), the server was reporting from 47 to 56 percent
of CPU usage and a staggering 95% of physical memory in use, claiming to have just shy of 600 MB of RAM unused. 45 minutes after I rebooted the server, those numbers dropped to 3% CPU usage and 3.9 GB of physical RAM in use. By Sunday afternoon -- in the middle
of a three-day weekend during which NO ONE logged into the system -- those numbers had risen to 35% CPU usage and 9.3 GB of physical RAM in use.
And I'm not quite sure I understand how these CPU usages are being reported, either. If I sort the process stack by CPU usage from highest to lowest, on many occasions the total CPU usage being reported does not match the individual CPU usage being reported
by the processes. And it's not a round-off problem, or a problem of one or two percentage points. One time I took a snapshot of the Task Manager window, and the sum of the nonzero CPU usages differed from the displayed total by 21 points.
About the only component that's working well on this server is Exchange. Whether on the internal PCs running Outlook through TCP/IP, the laptops connecting -- from anywhere -- via Outlook Anywhere, or the PDAs, mail comes and goes smoothly and promptly.
Mail arriving into Outlook hits the PDA an instant later. A reply from the PDA is readily available in Outlook's Sent Items folder. Contact and Calendar updates immediately propagate to all pertinent devices. Just don't try to use OWA ...
This server replaced an SBS 2003 SP2 box running on dual 1-GHz P3 processors, 2 GB of RAM and ATA-133 hard drives. That server also ran software that has not yet been installed on the new box, including the full installation of the Symantec Endpoint Protection
Small Business suite v11 (with the SEP server component managing the PCs). The new server is only running the SEP v12 unmanaged client; I have not dared burden it with any additional software. The old server dramatically outperformed this new platform. And
the old server also acted as the network's firewall and access control device, so it was doing more work than this new machine is doing here now ...
I have looked high and low for an explanation for this and have not gotten anywhere. Every piece of hardware has been rigorously tested several times; none has shown any problem. To the best of my knowledge, all programs, drivers, and firmware are at the
latest available revs and are all compatible with Server 2008 and/or SBS 2011. The server has three HP network printers installed. It has updated drivers and management software for the RAID controller, which we downloaded from the Intel site. It's running
SEP 12.1.1000.157 RU1 (unmanaged client only). Everything else it's running is right off of the SBS 2011 installation media (plus every available update from WU).
I've found one KB article that references the slow OWA and RWA issue (#2493361). Its solution is to install SP1 -- which this server already has.
I need to fix this ... What is wrong with this installation?
    Thanks
    CL

There is no third-party software other than the SEP package. We were having these issues before I installed the SEP client. I installed the SEP client only (not the full-blown package, v. 12.1.1000.157 RU1) after almost two weeks of running the machine with
no antivirus protection at all, which was making me uneasy.
And we've run the full SEP package on older SBS machines without issue. On the SBS 2011 box, we have the latest available version. All I've found that might implicate the antivirus program and explain what's happening on the machine is a reference to problems
with TDI drivers, but the solution it presented was to install SP1. The article did say to install Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, but the link to the SP1 page says to install it though Windows Update. Since this server is showing that it is running SBS 2011 Standard
SP1, and there are no outstanding patches or fixes to install, I'm assuming that the necessary patches are already installed. But again, we've had these problems with this server even before I installed any antivirus program.
The only other "third-party" software is the IASTOR driver and support programs for the Intel RAID controller. The original driver came from the SBS installation media. As part of the troubleshooting efforts to try to resolve the problems with this server,
I installed an updated IASTOR driver and application that I downloaded from the Intel site (v. 10.0.0.1046).
The three HP printer drivers all came either from the SBS installation media or from Windows Update.
The latest chipset and motherboard support drivers were downloaded from the Intel site. This included an updated graphics driver for the on-board graphics chip that came with the download package.
And that's it. This server has no specialized hardware. The only "extra" hardware is an external eSATA WD drive used for backups.
The server had multiple Intel gigabit NICs, but all but one were disabled since SBS 2011 only requires (and apparently can only work with) one NIC.
I haven't even installed Office on this server ...

  • CS3 on Snow Leopard... slow slow slow

Just recently updated to Snow Leopard (iMac, intel dual, 2G ram), Photoshop is working but very slow... feel like as if it's in 1995. Don't know if this mean anything... showing on Activity Monitor, PS runs 1.9G ram... with a 20mb file open. It took, roughly, 1 min 36 second to open a 23mb file with only Mail and Safari open. Also, I cut and past a jpg image from PPT back to PS, it crashed a few times (crash = hang, I force quite it). Then it worked when reopen sometimes restart the system. It just doesn't feel right to me (I don't have data to support it but I think it was working nicely before Snow Leopard).
I know I am behind... still on CS3... I thought about update to CS4 but a lot of complains I read were mostly from people already have CS4. It made me think that it's not worth it, at least for now.
Get rid of Snow Leopard is the only solution?
    Anybody has any suggestions?
    Thanks

I posted my issue on Apply's site as well... here is one answer:
CS3 is not completely compatible with Sno. And, Adobe is not supporting CS3 on Sno. Some have more problems with CS3 than other on CS3. Perhaps, you are one of the unlucky ones. You could try some standard fixes for problems (see below), but you may end up needing to get CS4 or go back to Leopard for CS3 happiness.
    1. Get OnyX and perform any deferred maintenance you think you may need.
    2. Repair permissions and disk, the first from your desktop and the second using your install DVD.
    3. Try resetting your PRAM/NVRAM. If everything isn't fixed, then follow the steps here including resetting your SMC if necessary.
    4. Use Font Book to eliminate bad and duplicate fonts.
    5. Reinstall (or install for the first time) the .6.1 and .6.2 updates by downloading and installing the combo updater.
    6. Reinstall 10.6 using you Sno install DVD by installing Sno over Sno using the upgrade method. Test your system after returning to 10.6. If is good there, then you may not want to install the updates, .6.1 and .6.2. But, if you do, then use the combo updater again.
The time to do what this list says may well cover the cost for CS4.
Is CS4 working nicely on Snow Leopard... as well as CS3 on Tiger? I'll pay if that's true... or should I wait for the next update?
    Thanks!
