I live on the 20th floor of apartment building. Here what I see from what I believe is the NID for the apartment from where a tech was repairing the phone line about 7 years ago. There are 4 bundles of wires. One or two of those bundles have dozens of wires protruding from them. Of those wires about 6-8 lead into a gray plate that has about 10 screws. These wires are wrap around the screws. There are no test jacks of any kind, it looks like it predates DSL modems. No longer have voice service or a physical land line phone, drop it 3 years ago .

  • Slow speeds/disconnections in Coventry area (02476...

For past 4 days I've been getting slow speeds and disconnections.
Phoned support got through to India (waste of time), and was told to ring back tomorrow because they had so many problems.
Anyone else in Coventry area having probs?
Luckily I am nearing the end of my contract so I think I will be off soon.
    cheers,
    Robin

Yes still have disconnection problems although not as bad now.
The last time I got disconnected the hub was showing a steady orange b.
I have had broadband since early days so I have the filtered face plate.
An engineer has been out to rewire the main phone socket and fit a new filtered face plate.
He tested the line and didnt find any faults with it.
I have had two disconnections since then.
I called India who gave me the number of the network support team and a pin number.
I havent rung yet because the connection is working.
My neighbour who is with a different ISP is having similar problems so I dont know if there is a problem at the exchange.
We are both on the Binley exchange.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • Bt infinity 2 slow speeds and disconnection

hi all hi all after having spent over two hours on the phone with BT being passed from post to post from billing to technical support back to billing people slamming phones down on me and no  help what so ever today 22/05/2014 have been with bt over 5 years phone  line the broadband and all services
    it a joke now
2012 I have had fibre optic broadband service with BT and all was ok till November 2013 when start have slow speeds and in January year 2014 started having disconnections reconnection connections form 5 mins to to 60mnis or sum times 2mins  of the broadbands and the connections sometimes 3 to 4  times a day disconnections and so on .... when was supposed to be fixed the upload speed was very slow and the download speed was okay when I first started with BT with the fibre-optic broadband two years ago nearly I was averaging about 42 meg per day and average speed of upload was 6.5 Mag
but now 32.meg dowm /up is 3.5 Rwent off in February he did a shift in lift because the broadband was 42 meg download bought lacked upload speed of less than half meg for the day of the lift it ran at 52 meg  with an average upload speed of about seven meg from around February till the end of February then stat act erratically reboot the bt hub 4 rebooting all time DSL light off on the main openreach modem in one day was off and on 36 times
had  engineers visit last week 14th of May to test line all was ok with line but i had now found out that bt they'll are now only selling me option one broadband fibre-optic even though I am paying for option two they now states that the speed on my line will never go above 36 meg so why am I paying for option 2 fibre-optici be through to the billing department today said yes you are an option 2 but  the technical department to say my line will only support 36 meg and I did find out from the engineer that I am on option one and only for the supply of the broadband line but have been pay for BT infinity option2
I think this is just an easy way for BT to get out of fixing the mind correctly by downgrading the line but wanting the customer to carry on paying for option to have tried with billing to sort this problem out today they just said you need to speak to technical support technical support what support manages to say you need to speak to billing one of them even slammed the phone on me
No customer support spent over two hours on the phone today and got nowhere and one department saying we can downgrade you to option one broadband but it will cost you £30 to do so
who i speak to if billing are no help at all ??????

  • Slow speeds for the past 2 weeks

For the past 2 weeks I have been having very slow speeds. At first I thought it was the westell modem which kept powering down, rebooting every 30+ mins or would save the network settings. Purchase a new modem still have the slow speed minus the constant reboots and loss of settings.
Any chance to get my speeds up to what Iam currently paying for?

Your line isn't in a very good shape to be running on the 1.5Mbps-3Mbps package. As it stands, you barely have enough capacity to support even 1/3 of the 1.5Mbps provisioning. There's simply too much noise.
What you should do first is take one of your modems out to your NID, if you have access to one and plug it into the test jack found inside of the NID. If there is a telephone plug already inserted into it, remove it to gain access to the jack (this will disconnect your home's wiring until you reconnect it). From there, sync up the modem and post up the new Transceiver Statistics you obtain.
Have your speeds been at 1.5-3Mbps in the past? That would also help us. Lastly, if you have Voice Service with Verizon, do you have any noise on your line, such as humming, buzzing, loud static or popping?

  • Slow speeds/constant drop outs

    Hi,
I have been having a lot of problems with my BB speed for the last few months. I have generally lived with it, but now its getting difficult to do anything including online gaming using Xbox Live.
Sometimes the speeds are quite healthy, then suddenly drop very slow, router disconnects from the Internet, reconnects, slow speeds, speeds up, slow down, etc etc etc. Its not a quick cycle, sometimes its OK for most of the day.
Every now and then, some websites wont want to load at all. I have to reboot the router (sometimes have to restore to factory settings) before anything starts to work. I get similar issues to the Vision box.
I have tried a few different routers (all HH3) - version a and b. The only way the web starts working for the longest periods is when I have done a factory reset of the routers.
I have also noticed that the ping is generally quite high (100ms+). Usual ping rate of around 183ms.
Can anyone suggest a way to fix this long term? My K/D ration on MW3 is getting heavily screwed!
    Thanks all.

are you connected directly to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal

  • Slow speeds, almost dead, can't figure out what's ...

Hi all, I've had very slow speeds from my homehub for almost a week. I've tried a factory reset on the hub to no avail. I also spoke to technical support in India I think, but they were no help.
When I perform a speed check the speed from the exchange to my house is fine, it's after that it dies a death.
I've checked all cables and it is not cabling after the hub as this problem effects internet tv's that are connected via ethernet cable and others that are wireless and also tablets that work on wifi.
In the last week I have had download speeds as low as 0.03 and for only a few hours last Monday has it been OK all of a sudden. I presumed a fix elsewhere but the problem came back an hour or two later.
At the moment we can't use iplayer, youtube and every webpage takes ages to load. It's quite horrible.
Has anyone got any idea's what could be wrong and are there any diagnostic tests I can run on the hub to see if it's borked.

  • Very slow speeds and ridiculous email and bill for...

    Hi
i have several issues. I have been a very satisfied customer for over 15 years until early summer of this year:
    1. My broadband speeds remain painfully slow despite 3 complaints and investigations. In fact my line is still connected to the test line as I was advised to do and I have never had a call back as promised.
    2. I have now received an email message to say I have used 90gb at a cost of £50. This is almost all uploads. i upload nothing and this figure is impossible. Until June my usage was quite small and I came nowhere near my limit on option 2. Nothing has changed with my usage since then. I do not download or stream films and do not upload large quantities. I probably would stream films, but the slow speed does not allow it.
    3. I spent over an hour on the phone trying to sort this out today, but was not helped by a succession of people who barely understood the situation and had even less understanding of customer service. I have now emailed, but have had a message saying it might be 72 hours before a reply.
Any advice would be really helpful as I am at my wits end
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Ok....since the original post the problem has continued. I have spent literally hours on the phone to people who say all the same things and never come up with a solution.
The test results are below. I do not experience speeds as reported. And if I use another tester it correctly comes out as about 1 4 - 1.9. or even lower. The upload usage is still showing as high....but it is just not possible. I have now reset the hub wireless key, but I have not shared this with anyone in range. Apple TV is now disconnected after it was going to take 20 hours to download a film!
I am at my wits end with this and really do not want the hassle of changing provider but even after 20 years BT broadband I am so very close to that.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • K9N2 Sli Platinum + SSD OCZ Vertex 3 = Slow Speed Problem [PARTIALLY SOLVED]

    Hey folks,
I have a problem with my new SSD. I only get sequential reads of 140MB/s and writes of 114MB/s.
I think it is a driver related issue. I once got faster SATA2-like speeds but cannot reproduce the system settings again... Everything back to SATA1-like speeds after reboot.
    First my pc specs:
MSI K9N2 Sli Platinum, BIOS v3.9
    - 6 SATAII ports by nForce 750a SLI
    - 2 ESATA (External-SATA) ports (back panel) by JMB363
    - Supports storage and data transfers at up to 3 Gb/s
    AMD Phenom II 965 Black
    Patriot PV224G8500ELKB Viper II Series DDR2 4GB (2 x 2GB, CL5 PC-8500/1066MHz)
SSD SATAIII OCZ Vertex 3, 120GB, FW v2.11
    LG Internal BlueRay BH10LS30
    Windows 7 Ultimate x64
I only get very slow speeds with the SSD. I tried so many things that I am getting very frustrated now, I am even thinking about getting a new board and ram just to get the SSD up to speed...
    1)
I installed Win7 first with all the default settings in Windows Setup from DVD. Default "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" driver was "Standard AHCI1.0 Serial ATA Controller".
SSD was connected to SATA1-port,  On-Chip Sata Controller AHCI enabled in BIOS,  Extra RAID/IDE Controller disabled.
All fine, but whichever benchmark I used (AS SSD, HD Tune Pro, Atto Disk Benchmark, CrystalDiskMark; other tools used: DriveControllerInfo, AIDA64/Everest, CrystalDiskInfo ) I got e.g. 140MB/s Read and 114MB/s Write sequentially (CrystalDiskmark, similar with random data AND only zeros ).
Trim working (it seems) with AHCI driver. I also changed to nvstor64 driver (nforce driver setup 15.56), with is marginally faster but not what you would expect from a SATAIII drive on SATAII controller.
    2)
I installed Win7 using "diskpart" (Shift-F10) during disk setup, setting a cluster size of 64k instead of default. No real change.
    3)
After reinstall of Win7 x64 (again...), I changed from SATA1 port to SATA6 port, also enabled Extra Raid/IDE controller set to AHCI as well.
Nothing changed. With all settings to default in Windows (ahci default driver), I then manually updated the ahci to nvstore64 driver in Device Management, rebooted.
Then a minute later after reboot I got the following Sequential speeds with CrystalDiskMark:
273MB/s read and 137MB/s write (random data)  +  274MB/s read and 220MB/s write (with zeros) !!!
While I ran this benchmark Windows came up with a message: "You must restart your computer to apply these changes - Restart Now/Restart Later".
After the previos reboot, when I changed manually from AHCI to NVSTORE, I had changed nothing in the current session, apart from running CrystalDiskMark.
I did reboot and I was back to the slow SSD speeds again = 140/114 MB/s...
    4)
I have tried every possible combination of mainboard SATA ports, drivers changing with nvidia setup/manually, deleting and disabling controllers (incl BSOD and startup repair :D ), chaning bios settings around, but I just cannot get back the faster speeds
There is never any change in speed, whether I use ahci or nvstore64, whichever benchmark I use, whether random or zeros...
    5)
Could the SSD be broken, something internally preventing it from faster speeds (with this one random exception)?
Could it be that my K9N2 SataPorts only allows for / reduced to SATA1 speeds?
Am I missing something with the driver setup?
Do I need additional drivers for the extra JMicron Controller when using SataPorts 5/6 ?
I have no other mainboard to test this with...
Please guys, I am going to jump out of the window if I can't fix it... :(
    Thanks, Mike

    Hey guys - problem 'solved':
I tested the OCZ SSD Vertex 3 120GB with following sata3 controller card http://www.lycom.com.tw/PE-115H.htm.
The card itself works immediately (needs at least PCIe x4 slot, will work slower otherwise but still faster than the OCZ SSD @sata1 with nvidia chipset).
There is some raid setup, doesn't apply to me, the boot even with the card is really only a few seconds longer and not annoying at all. Windows (7 x64) needed a driver, supplied on CD (which is cheap and making noise like h**l). The card works w/o the driver but doesn't harm to install it...
Also, just to clarify, this sata controller card did not need any specific setup at all. Just put it in, plug in sata cable (I use akasa sata3-rated), maybe change boot device in BIOS (I didn't even have to), done - booting Windows as usual.
Benchmark CDM with sata controller card Lycom PE-115H:
    http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/3845/cdmpe115hahci0x00.png
    http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/7549/cdmpe115hahcirand.png
Speed is much better than before with nvidia chipset 750a SLI controller: sata1 (sata2 whenever it randomly worked):
    http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/505/cdmahci0x0.png
    http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/6258/cdmahci0x0sata6contnv64.png
    Final thoughts:
Well, I am happy with the SSD speed now (PCIe limited to 5Gbps). However, I had to spent quite some time to get it working on my sata2-cabable mainboard. Finally, I had to buy a extra controller card to get it working reliably at speeds faster than sata1. There is hardly any useful information on why this problem occurs with (older) nvidia chipsets and OCZ (sata3) SSDs. I still think that OCZ must know about this problem, but regards this issue as low priority, while at the same time not planning on giving up on sales to people with nvidia chipsets. Maybe OCZ should just make a big sticker on the box the drives come in with something like "Does/Might not work with nvidia chipsets, please use third-party sata controller card or different SSD manufacturer".   But then none of these potential customers would buy OCZ SSDs...
I will keep the sata3 controller, anyway handy to have, but return the OCZ Vertex 3 120GB and replace it with a SSD from a different manufacturer (Corsair Force GT, Patriot and OWC are not that great to get around here). The benchmarks for most people will not achieve the maximum advertised OCZ speeds anyway, so why not go with a brand that allows for some plug'n'play with some customer support.
Hope this post helps others like me with their nvidia chipset  + sata1 speed problem
    Cheers, Mike

  • I'm wondering if anyone else has had problems with their imac fans being extremely loud when running at slow speeds?  When the computer heats up enough for the fans to run at higher speeds they quiet down. New HD fan was just installed.

I have an imac that I've had for a couple years.  The fans have always been loud when running at the slower speeds.  When the computer heats up enough for the fans to run at a higher speed the fans quiet down.  I had installed SMC fan control after multiple attempts with Apple to get the fan issue resolved.  That seemed to keep the fans quiet enough.  I've never had a problem with overheating.  Recently the fans were becoming loud again even running at the slightly higher speeds so I took it to my local Apple store and they replaced the hard drive fan.  I got it back and it's now as loud or louder than ever!!  And, now SMC fan control won't "stick."  The fans will speed up, but then gradually go back to the lower "loud" levels.  I'm at a loss as to what to do next.

    Thanks jared,
I'm still dealing with this issue through Apple. Some time after I posted this, I contacted Apple again. They did start a case up for me, as I was experiencing the same behavior on two different machines, with two different versions of Windows.
So far it remains unsolved. I've logged iClouds for Windows on my desktop, which is brand new, then logged for awhile after completely uninstalling Norton Security Suite, depending on the Microsoft security for some time, and finally logged after I uninstalled iCloud for Windows, restarted, installed a clean download, and connected using a completely different test account, which Apple set up for me. None of this made any difference. Looking at the logs, it seems every 10 minutes, iCloudServices.exe creates a new TCP connection to confirm I'm using less than 5GB on iCloud, (which I am by a good margin, using less than 2GB), it seems this connection is not closed, and when the next iteration rolls around 10 minutes later, a new TCP connection is created. I come very close to having 6 TCP connections created per hour, until I restart my computer. This works out to... 6 x 24 = 144/day.
Perhaps the article you posted will shed some further light on this. I'm thinking seeing the state of the connection through netstats, at the least, could help.
For the last week, I've been putting a hold on further logging, as Apple wants me to create a new user account on one of my computers, install iCloud for Windows there, and log it running in the other account. This however basically means I cannot use my computer for a fair number of hours, and I've been busy enough with work the past week that I haven't the time or energy to afford to set this up and run it. I've had need of my computers too much for the past week.

  • E1200 - Had a weak signal and slow speed

Pros: Price, nice sleek shiny box, kind of worked when new. Good as a paperweight in a light breeze.
Cons: Not really a good doorstop - too light. Died at 35 days of ownership. Won't let me in to the web interface to make some changes. When working it had a weak signal and slow speed. Doesn't support access point mode like my old wireless router did.
Other Thoughts: Not the first time I'm had problems with Linksys/Cisco branded products but this is the last product I'll ever buy with the Linksys/Cisco name on it. Fact is ever since Cisco bought out Linksys, every product I've bought from them had failed/died within a few months. You'd think they would get this right by now but they haven't.

There are many reasons why you experience poor signal or connection. Well, there are few things you should keep in mind with regards to N routers:
    1) For the best possible speeds, you need to be using WPA2-AES as your security mode. Any other security mode will see your speed/range capped.
    2) Make sure the drivers for the Wireless Card for the computers should be updated as well..
    3) The router by default uses a channel setting of auto, which means that it would keep switching channels depending on the interference. I’d recommend you set it to a fixed channel. Usually, 1, 3, 6 and 9 give you the best performance depending on your environment of course. I’d suggest you try different channels, observing each for a while, to see which gives you the best performance. You can follow the link here on how to change channels.
Second, all Linksys/Cisco can work as an Access Point. There are two (2) ways to cascade a Linksys router to another router:
    1. LAN to LAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the Linksys router (router A) to one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of another router (router B).
This type of cascading requires the main and the secondary router to be on the same LAN IP segment to allow the computers and other devices to connect to both routers.  This configuration is recommended if you want to share files and resources within the network.
    2. LAN to WAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of router A to the Internet port (WAN port) of router B.
This type of cascading requires the main router and the secondary router to have different IP addresses.  This connection makes it easier to identify which router the computers and other devices in the network are connected to since they will have different LAN IP segments.  However, computers that are connected to router A will not be able to communicate with router B, and vice versa since they are two different networks.

  • Upgraded to ADSL2 now get slower speeds than befor...

    Hello
Well last Tuesday my line was upgraded to the 20mb ADSL2 and I was looking forward to some increase in bandwidth (even though before the upgrade my line was pumping 7mb most of the time which I was happy with)
Now for some reason I am getting slower speeds than before I upgraded. Something tells me I should not have bothered with the amount of effort it took to get the upgrade.
I cant understand why my DL is saying 3000+ and before upgrade it was reading 7500+
I have not reset my hub manually all disconnections have been done automatic.
Here are my router stats and I have been reading a few posts and I am hoping someone can shine some light on this for me:

  • Time Capsule disconnects every few days

Hi, my Time Capsule disconnects every week to ten days, as indicated by a flashing yellow light.  To reconnect it, I have to unplug and disconnect it from the ethernet cable.   It's then able to reconnect until the next failure.  This seems to be a different problem than previously described in this forum, as it is not able to reconnect on its own.
I'm using an iMac running on OS 10.6.8.
Capacity is 999.9 GB of which 192 GB is used on disc.
The Time Capsule is a 1TB Sim Dualband Time Capsule bought on May 21, 2011.  It's past the end of the one year warranty but has been doing this pretty much from the start.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,

How do I access the logs?
logs are in advanced area of v5 utility. there is no access to logs in the v6 utility.. I guess Apple thought that looking at logs was beyond the average users ability so no longer needed in new slick interfaces.
Use v5 utility.. if you run Lion download it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
If you are on Mountain Lion.. then you will need to trick it to install. Download and install and run unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Download the 5.6 utility from reference above.. open the dmg file to see the pkg file.. AirPortUtility56.pkg.. drag that file over unpkg.. it will create a new directory on your desktop. of the same name.. drill down, Applications, Utilities. There is the real utility.. drag it to your main Applications Utilities directory. Ignore completely the toyland v6 and run only 5.6.
"is the TC router or bridged or worse possible, join wireless network."  - Are you saying joining a wireless network may fix it or that being in one may be the cause?
    Thanks.
You have not provided any indication of the network layout. If you want to pursue this I need full info..
Is the TC the main router or in bridge mode?
What broadband do you have? What modem? Is it a router?
Have you tested with the TC out of operation.. with another router?
Give complete details... that way we can narrow down the issue and work out if the TC is in best possible mode.
The worst mode as I indicated above is join wireless due to wireless being flakey at any time and TC not the most stable. This will be slow, although ironically the other problems might stop.. who knows unless you try it.
What OS is your computer running? If you are on Mountain Lion, well join the club.. this is a major issue and I doubt there is a solution.
But you can start by setting SMB names.. short, no spaces pure alphanumeric for everything.
    TC name ... TC
Wireless names.. different for both bands. TC24ghz TC5ghz
    Hard disk share name.. Data
If the TC is the main router set very short lease time for dhcp.. 20min. and see if that improves anything.

  • Another one with slow speeds - sorry!

We have been BT BB customers for years and have been fine most of the time. We are supplied by an ADSL max exchange and we are about 1.5 miles away. In the last few days my download speeds are VERY variable sometimes taking minutes to load a page if at all, sometimes fine.
We have a Home Hub 3 with a master socket fitted with an i-plate, microfilters to all sockets were replaced last year.
I'm a bit clueless (better since I've been stalking on this board for the last few days)
Quiet test is - well quiet. No crackles, hisses or anything added.
I.m not aware of any connection drops, I do admit to one reset press. and there have been a couple of episodes of disconnection to attach to the test socket.
I have a fault reported with BT who say the problem is with my internal equipment and private engineer booked to fit me a ADSL service specific faceplate and trace my fault but TBH the price quoted might be more than I can afford so if you guys can help me I'd be very, very pleased.
    Thank you in advance

If my speeds are fine using the master socket - do I assume that the BT fault finder was right and my internal wiring/kit is at fault in that speeds are slow when using the normal front plate socket.
Dumb question - can I not just stay plugged into the test socket as that works well, (apart from not being able to use the landline phone)
Dumb question 2 do you need to know what the ADSL stats when im experiencing slow speeds - this was a snapshott this afternoon using a different speedchecker

Your line looks to be pretty long to be using 5Mbps service on it. I think your disconnects may be from copper that is experiencing changes in how it is able to carry the DSL signal due to the changing weather. Perhaps the copper cabling is also deteriorating as it is exposed to the elements. Either way, we need to rule out some things first before deciding on a course of action.
Right now, your modem's margin is low, the downstream speed is not synced up correctly, and the attenuation is high. In addition, transmit powers are not reported but can be assumed, which also suggest a lenghty or degraded line as well as the equipment attempts to compensate for the speed.
If you have access to your NID, I'd like for you to plug your modem into it first to see if we can pull better statistics from the line. If they are much improved, we'll need to start troubleshooting where in the home the copper is giving issues. If there is no change, the next course of action would be to get Verizon out to repair the line on their end of things to try and improve the signal coming in. If they really cannot do anything, then I believe the line will require a bumping down in speed to 4Mbps/768kbps after overhead, instead of trying to aim for a full 5Mbps.
If the slow speed issues are not from the poor line stats, please give us some information on what is taking place when the speeds are reduced. Is it during the evening or night time hours when this occurs? Is there any particular usage pattern in your home that could be perhaps causing this issue? How about your modem sync speeds? Traceroutes?
