Slow speed with WRT54GS Wireless-G router

I have install a WRT54GS wireless router.
Since then my download speed on my pc (the one directly connect with the router) has come down from 4mb to 1mb.
If I connect the modem directly to the pc I get 4mb but when i connect the wireless router between them it goes down to 1mb.
I have call tech support, upgrade to version 1.52.0 but nothing change.
I have try it without a firewall and get the same result
One thing I have notice, when I do a tweak test at http://www.dslreports.com my RWIN  without the router is 56000
If I connect the router is show 9800 even if my PC who as XP is set to 56000
Thanks

Check for latest firmware and upgrade if necessary. Then do a factory reset.
Help fight lag! Wire up that gaming machine!!!!!

  • Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router Not working

I have a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router and it has worked good for a couple months and yesterday it stopped. When I plug it in all the lights are lit even though there arent any ethernet cables connected and the power light blinks constantly. I tried holding the reset button on the back and it didnt help. Anyone know whats wrong or anything I can try to fix it?

You need to try again to reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Improve Download Speed with Mobile Wireless Card

I just purchased a GT MAX 3.6 Express LaptopConnect Card from AT&T to allow mobile internet access. While I can connect to the internet, the speed is very slow (I'm getting 3 of 7 bars). I understand there might be a Mac "booster" I can purchase. Has anyone heard of such a thing? Or, do you know how I can improve my download speeds with a wireless card? Thanks kindly for your help on this...

I received M Q today. To my surprise, there is no way to connect M Q to PB or any computer. I called Verizon and talked with their data connect department. They confirmed that M Q cannot be used as a modem The only device that will is Treo 700p. I am returning the unit by FedEx today. Treo is xpensive. So I will downgrade from MBP to PB G4 15" and use Verizon's Broadband Wireless PCMCIA card

My podcast app started playing all unplayed episodes at slightly slower speed with everything doubled. How do I return it to normal play?

When you're listening to a podcast, slide the current artwork up from the bottom, and you will reveal the control panel. Adjust the little switch in the middle so that it is pointing North, instead of Northwest. That will fix your problem.

  • Need major help, I have a WRT54G Wireless-G Router and theres too much Lag with My Xbox 360...

I cant host a game on Gears of War no more on my xbox 360 cuz it also drops and when i play on someone else's game, i get dropped from the middle of a game.
I have Comcast Hi-Speed Internet and that shouldnt be a problem,
I have my PC and my Xbox 360 hooked up and thats it,
On my computer i have McAfee Security, but i dont kno if that would slow it down??
Well when i unplug my router, and do a direct connection to my xbox 360, it is pretty **bleep** good connection. So what is there I can do to fix this slow connection with the router being hooked up?? i have my router in the same room too as my pc and 360.

  • Very slow connection with WRT54GS.

It appeared out of nowhere 2 days ago... slow connection for websites, very high latency for online games to a point where it's unplayable... i tried to reset my router, change channel(i'm usually at channel 6), moving the antennas... nothing. when i reset, the speed is fine for a few minutes, but after a while it's back to slow connection. My router isn't even 1 year old yet and it's already broken? I can't believe that, there must be some solution. Anyone can help please?

The latest firmware is 1.02.0 if you have wrt54gs v6 & V5 if yout got v7 the latest firmware is 7.50.0
First step you need to check is your direct connection from the modem.
    1. hardwire your computer straight to the modem using a cat 5 ethernet cable, if your download speed and your internet connection is slow, the problem is with the modem or with your ISP so you need to call your ISP and double check your connection.
If your speed if fine straight to the modem then its with the router.
2.Hardwire your computer straight to the router if your speed is fine when its hardwired through the router, then the problem is with your wireless card or the wireless settings of the router.
In US the standard channel is 11,6 and 1. So play around with the channel. If its still doesnt work then access the setup page of your router click on the WIRELESS tab click on ADVANCE WIRELESS SETTINGS sub tab. set beacon interval to 50, RTS and Fragmentation Threshold to 2304.
After that turn off the modem the router and your computer for 1min. After a minute turn on the modem first after lights of your modem are steady, turn on the router and lastly turn on your computer, check your connection if its fine then its fixed if not call linksys tech support.
I hope this would help. Good Luck!

  • Slow speeds with roaming network

I just got a new HTC One M8 which has the wireless AC capability.  I am getting really slow speeds on my home network and hoping someone can help.
My current setup is as follows - a motorola surfboard modem hooked up (ethernet) to the new model Airport Extreme (with the AC), from there I have a powerline adapter hooked up to another part of the house where I have the older model Airport Extreme (I think 5th gen) - and I am using this in roaming mode to extend the signal.
This works fantastic for my devices which run on N, and everything flies with little to no issues no matter where I am in the house.  But this phone - it is incredibly slow.  When I run speed tests, at times I am getting decent download on the phone (20mbs) but getting absolutely 0 upload (literally 0.0 mbs).  It works from time to time but is cutting in and out frequently.. So - What I am wondering is, would the fact that the router downstairs broadcasting an AC signal conflict with the upstairs broadcasting an N?  I am wondering if the phone is constantly switching from one band to another and causing my speed issues?  I tried the wifi on another network which just had an N signal, and had no issues whatsoever so I know it is something to do with my home network.
Again - I don't have this issue with any of my other devices (iphone 5, laptop, Ipad etc) so I don't believe the issue lies with my ISP, just looking for advice or if anyone knows if this setup would cause issues with AC devices?  I like having the 2nd router upstairs as it really boosts the signal for my N devices and also gives me the ability to hard wire the PS4, xbox etc - so I definitely want to keep it setup - but am thinking I might need to set it up as a new network and turn off the roaming.. Thoughts?  Thanks in advance.

i'd tweak it and think you're making it worse by having 2 different networks, both your routers are very capable dual mode so you should let the router and the devices decide which band to use (2 vs 5) vs your choosing it for them
once your network is setup correctly, restart any stationary clients ensuring that they are grabbing the strongest signal present
keep flatex downstairs, factory reset it and create a new network, trust me you'll want to factory reset to avoid issues when setting up the towerex
for now, put towerex next to flatex, factory reset it, and connect an eth cable from LAN on flatex to WAN (circle icon) on towerex
give it a minute or 2, open airport utility and you'll get the option to setup towerex as a WIRED extension, do this
now the painful part, play around with different set of electrical outlets to find the ones that give your towerex the best connection
remember, to turn the wifi on/off for the device you're using to test the towerex after each move or it will likely be connected to the flatex

  • Slow speed Enhanced - can't connect router/modem

After speed slipped to 0.2 to 1.5 MBPS with current router I convinced Indian contact to send me new router. It would not connect to any of my MAC/apple products. Returned to original router and continued to face slow speeds daily. Today was .12 MBPS. Must go to reliable internet service soon!! Any suggestions??

  • E3200 - Dramatically slowing speed with a switch behind...

I changed my old Linksys router with a new e3200 with gigabit eth-ports.
When i directly connect to the router (ethernet) i get the right speed. (speedtest @ 98Mbits)
But the crazy thing when i put a switch (non gigabit) on my router and connect my pc to the switch
    i get a really bad connection. (speedtest @ 18Mbits).
Tested different times and still this slow speed..
When i connect the pc directly to my router i get the right speed again.
I tried everything but cannot find a way to fix it.
In my old sitation i got the right speed. That was also  a linksys, but older model and non gigabit.
The only last thing i think:
maybe a conflict between gigabit(e3200 router) and the non gigabit(switch).??

    Thank you for you response!
I didnt change anything and before my new E3200 router everything worked OK.
    I was getting speeds round 100 MB/S on speedtest.net
But saturday i switched the old switch (non gigabit) with a New Gigabit switch (Sitecome).
And now everything is back to 100 MB/S.
    So conclusion:
Dont use a non gigabit switch with the E3200. Cause it wil conflict.
I tested 3 differtent non gigabit switches and all gave me lower speed. With my Fiber connection and saw immediately the problem.
People who normaly not get speeds above 20MB/S on internet, dont sees the problem.

  • Problems with WRT54GS Wireless

    Hi,
I bought a WRT54GS over two years ago and has been a really good unit to have, but we did see problems recently when adding a WET54G wireless bridge.  Initially I thought it was the bridge locking up and preventing access to the server it provides network access for.  After upgrading its firmware it appeared fine until a couple of days ago when all wireless in the house stopped.
It appears the WRT54GS just gave up the wireless activity.  I could connect via the browser admin tool through a wired switch port and it said everything was fine, even the wireless light on the front was on, but continuously - no activity.
I've tried unplugging, saving the config and defaulting back to factory setting and then reimporting the config, but no matter if it was in custom or default mode no activity at all.
So I ordered a new unit that is still to arrive only to find to my surprise that last night all of a sudden wireless started working again with no user intervention at all?
Now I need to understand if I should use the new unit when it arrives and keep the old box with the wireless turned off, as it's still a worthy 4 port switch or send the new unit back for a refund?
    Any ideas, anyone?

I have had this problem for the last 1yr since I switched to Linksys wireless routers. I started with the one with the SRX200 technology (WRT54GX2) and after 1yr, Linksys replaced the router. Within a month the problem appeared. So, I purchased one with SRX400 (WRT54GX4 with v1.00.13 firmware) three weeks back and the same problem has appeared again. I just don't know what to do next. !@##$$%&*
I have connected my laptop to the wired port of the router and I am able to access the internet while typing this. The wireless settings seem to be OK and the front panel LED shows that it is ON.
Sometimes, disabling the radio and re-enabling works. When it doesn't, I cycle the power to the router and it works sometimes. Many times, none of these methods work and I have to do a hard reset of the router where the configuration is completely erased. I have to reload the config from the backed up file and then the wireless would start working again.
The chat support from Linksys is terrible as their response seems to be extremely canned, it almost makes me feel that they are just bots with human names. Replacing the router is NOT going to be the solution and even after over a dozen chat sessions with Linksys, I haven't received a solution. I thought they will atleast tell me to capture some internal logs/status which will help them to debug the issue, but just being a Cisco company doesn't mean that they represent a quaity brand and are able to rectify issues. I am extremely disappointed with Linksys and Cisco. So, I am turning to this forum for any advice. Appreciate any.
I noticed that there is a new version of firmware (1.00.17). So, I upgraded my router to the new f/w just now. Lets see what happens in the future...

  • Do you have to set up AE inBridge mode with existing wireless modem router?

    Hi
I've just bought the AE and Apple TV. My plan was to basically use my existing Netgear wireless modem router for the internet only and set up the AE as the wireless router. I also bought the AE to boost the strength, print wirelessly and I thought it might work better with the Apple TV. The other things I use on my home network are ipad, iphone 4, HP DV6 Notebook, Toshiba Notebook and PS3.
I've plugged the Netgear into the AE with an Ethernet cable. I initially started with the "replace existing access point with AE", as I thought I was replacing the Netgear with the AE. This option left me with internet working and a blinking amber light on the AE.
I then did a hard reset and started again. I diabled the wireless on my old modem/router and chose the "create wireless network" option in airport utility. I think it worked because I have internet and a green light but to be honest I have no idea what I did. I know it's in bridge mode but only because I didn't know how to set up the other options.
Also, I've ended up with three networks out of this process. The default network for the AE (but it has one of those yellow error icons next to it in the available network list), the one I set up and a 5ghz of the one I set up. Neither the default network of the 5ghz network show up in the Internet and Networking control panel, which is where I delete them. I just thought this was odd.
    What I'd like to know:
Do you have to set it up in bridge mode when you have an existing wireless modem/router?
If not, is there any benefit to setting the AE up as the router instead of using the Netgear?
If I create a new network should the default network still be showing up in my list of available networks or have I done something wrong?
If I have a 5ghz network, does that mean that the other network I created is only 2.4ghz or is it still dual band?
Considering the devices I have would it be beneficial for me to have a 5ghz network for certain devices only like the Apple TV?
As you can probably tell I have no idea what I am doing. I'm basically just clicking stuff and seeing if it works.
    Any help/advice is much appreciated
    Thanks
    Jo

Hello Jo Sugden. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Do you have to set it up in bridge mode when you have an existing wireless modem/router?
You don't have to but, most likely, it will be the best configuration choice when you have the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) connected to your main Internet router by Ethernet. In this configuration, all NAT & DHCP services will continue to be provided by the Netgear router. This will allow all wired or wireless clients connected to the AEBSn to get their IP address (and be on the same subnet) from the Netgear ... and this would allow clients connected to either router to "see" each other.
If not, is there any benefit to setting the AE up as the router instead of using the Netgear?
If, for some reason, you wanted to create a separate subnet, configuring the AEBSn as a router would allow for this.
If I create a new network should the default network still be showing up in my list of available networks or have I done something wrong?
By default, your AEBSn will create two wireless networks with the same Network Name; one broadcasting in the 5 GHz band, and the other in the 2.4 GHz band. The default name for both of these will be Apple Network NNNNNN. You have the option, within the AirPort Utility, to change the names of each network.
When connected by Ethernet, and in bridge mode, it would be beneficial to name your AEBSn's networks the same as that provided by the Netgear. This would create what is called a "roaming" network ... where you literally can roam with a laptop from one router to the other and still be on the "same" network. This also is a way to extend the wireless range of the Netgear.
If I have a 5ghz network, does that mean that the other network I created is only 2.4ghz or is it still dual band?
As a minimum, you will have three wireless networks: one provided by the Netgear and two provided by the AEBSn. By giving them all the same Network Name, they will appear as one to any wireless client. However, they will all show up in a utility like iStumbler or AirRadar.
Considering the devices I have would it be beneficial for me to have a 5ghz network for certain devices only like the Apple TV?
Yes. Operating a wireless network in the 802.11n Radio Mode in the 5 GHz Radio Band offers the best potential bandwidth ... around 300+ Mbps. The only real drawback of the higher frequency band is that the signal strength drops off more rapidly with distance than in the lower frequency band. Also higher frequencies cannot penetrate objects (like walls) as well.
Ideally, you would want to place your Apple TV or other streaming devices in the same room as the 5 GHz network ... or connect them to the router by Ethernet.
