Slow speeds even slower live chat

Is there anyone actually answering live chat for sky?I signed up with Sky in January with great hope it would be faster then Tiscali. So im paying £10 more for what seems to be a worse service. The speeds i should be getting according to Sky is between 5-11 mbps, but reality is i get about 2mbps.When i reboot the router the speed is between 5-6mbps, great......BUT its short lived a few hours later the Internet drops completely and im back to 2 mbps again. By the evening times its as low as 0.2 mbps.I have been watching live chat all day but its never available.Connection Speed3926 kbps1113 kbpsLine Attenuation43.5 dB27.7 dBNoise Margin2.8 dB6.6 dBModem Status Connected DownStream Connection Speed3926UpStream Connection Speed1113VPI0VCI38 This is starting to drive me mad....im thinking of going back to Tiscali.

You should be getting around 7.9mbps based on your attenuation figure. Rhe one thing that stands out is your Downstream Noise margin its lower than it should be which leaves no room for the drops that happen during the day, which will be causing your connection to drop. You need to try using just the test socket to see if it helps,if it doesn't then you need to call Sky and ask them to manually profile your line(you may need to speak to tier 2 support to get that done).

  • Slow speeds even after BT Engineer visit, Whats ne...

We've always had really slow internet speeds, around 1.5mbs down 0.4mbs up. (From the BT speed tester)
After many conversations with the helpdesk, an Engineer was sent out today to try and solve our speed issue.
Various tests were carried out on the line, all reported back as a good quality line. S/N ratio was 96% etc.
We are located pretty close to the exchange and the engineer has said we should be getting alot more than what we are. He has tried a reset on the line but this hasnt improved anything.
Whats the next step? Do we contact the helpdesk again? Are there more advanced level of engineers, i.e. for exchange issues?
All of the standard checks have been done :-
    - using main socket only. (BT Openreach ADSL)
    - line test 17070 option 2, results in a very faint crackle but could be the handset
    - BT Home Hub 2, package is BT Broadband Option 3 (unlimited)
    - The exchange is Billingshurst and has ADSL Max enabled
    - The engineer has now installed a dedicated socket. (phone and internet on the socket). Previously we had tried two sepereate filters.
    - wired conection
    - Hub is left on 24/7
Our next door neighbour is on an identical package/setup to us and gets 3.7mb down on the speed test.
The engineer has just reset the line hence the time log being low. Currently measuring at 1.2mb down, so slightly lower than before.
The Noise margin was at 6.5db, the engineer reset this down to 6db and it has slowly krept to the figure below:-

ok there is certainly something restricting your connection speed as i posted earlier you should be connecting at 8mb with your current noise margin and attenuation
you say about a slight crackle there should be no noise heard on the could you try another handset

  • Q180: Slow download speeds even slower then upload speed?

Just looking for answers. I have recently brought a Q180, using it wifi upstairs. And I just upgraded to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem gateway (Moto SBG 6580) I have Charter as my IP I pay for data plus 30 Mbps download. My son's laptop, my HP laptop and my Mac book (used up stairs) all seems to have benefited from the upgraded modem. Showing 20-25 Mbps. Charter provides a webpage (speedtest.charter.com) to test your up/download speeds. The Q180 shows an average of 4 Mbps! And uploads of avg. 6 Mbps!? Q180 shows 811.N as selected and full signal strength of 54 Mbps?
Where could the chocking be coming from? How can I fine tune the Q? Any help would be really appreciated

that website for testing is crap i have tested mine and i get http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/1593897921.png 20mb down and 3.5mb up and i am on 50mb down and 5mb up
try something like speedtest.net and also do a pingtest.net
even speedtest shows my speed as 35mb and 4mb a little better but i am in the uk

  • Toshiba P-755 getting slow, internet even slower

Hello everyone, this is kind of my last resort for places to turn with this problem, so bear with me here. I bought this laptop new from best buy less than a year ago, its a P-755-S5120 with i7, and windows 7. Its been great until latley ive had some issues with it.
At my college where I live in the dorms, the wireless has become very slow (.18 Mbps) I went to the IT guys and they said im the only one having this problem so it must be on my end. They did some tests and found out I have a significant packet loss when we ran a trace route, this means nothing to me but im told its bad. I tried booting in safe mode with networking and recieved the same results. Which made me think it is on their end. I've recently updated my wireless driver.
Another thing its been doing that may or may not be related, is every single time I shut it down (every night) it installs 1 update before it shuts down. It seems strange that there is a new update it wants to install every single night. Could this update not be installing completely? Also, when I first power it up, it is very slow. What I mean by that is, it turns on fine, I login, and it takes me to the desktop, but I have to wait a good 2-3 minutes before I can do anything on the desktop. The only program I have opening on startup in skype. What could be doing this?
Ive had Kaspersky anti virus on this computer since i bought it, and when I do a full scan it says I'm just fine.
    Thanks for any thoughts!!

It sounds like you may have a couple issues. How long has this been happening?

  • Even our new modem connects to the internet only briefly and at slow speeds, if it connects at all

After nearly four years usually acceptable DSL service, our connection started getting too slow to email photos or steam anything, especially during peak hours. After several live chats and phone calls we got a new modem, and things are even worse, even after a marathon support call last night. After restarting the modem we sometimes get a few minutes of service, sometimes with download speeds in excess of 1.0 Mbps, but usually in between 0.20 and 0.40 Mbps. A few minutes after this, though, any device loses the internet; a few minutes later, the internet light on the modem goes dark. The DSL light stays solid throughout. But for the most part we're spending lots of time and money in exchange for a few minutes of slow DSL at a time. We've registered the new modem online, changed wireless channels, tried using an Ethernet cables, tried different jacks, disconnected the phone, cleaned browser caches. Modems just won't maintain an internet connection for more than a few minutes any more. What else can I try?

It seems your issue is most likely outside your home. have you tried connecting the modem to the NID and testing ? This will help isolate the issue. If the problems persists it may be an issue at the Central office. I would try to get a tech to your home ASAP and also contact Customer service & ask for a credit. When I had a similar issue a 24 hour monitor was implemented by upper level support.
Do you know how far you are from the CO you are; and how old the wirng from the CO to your home is? Good Luck!

  • I have very slow internet even though my provider says the speed is fast

I am experiencing very slow internet even though my provider says that my speed is fast.  The uploading of a page takes long to complete

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
    and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here: http://www.opendns.com/home/nobloat ) and further independent information can be read here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
    and here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The later versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:

Things You Can Do To Keep Your Computer From Slowing Down
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

    Hi,
I have been having trouble with slow speeds in the evening and at weekends on BT's Option 3 service recently. It varies from 0.5mb to 1mb between 5pm and 10pm. Outside that time window it is always at a reasonable speed(5mb+). The line is very stable and internet never drops unless the router is restarted. What could be the problem?

  • Reset hub and now getting extremely slow speeds...

    Hi there,
So I have had bt broadband for 3 months and had nothing but problems. The speed is very slow, though I do live in a rural area so somewhat to be expected. However in the evenings I have noticed I can get extremely high pings (1000+) and slow speeds (below 0.5 mbps).
Recently however my usual daytime speeds of around 1.2 mbps shot up to around 3 mbps, which to me is quite high! (compared to what I have been getting).
Though it dropped off a bit over the past few days (to around 2.2 mbps) it was still working ok, until last night when I reset my homehub as my sister was unable to connect to it at all.
Since then I have had nearly none existant speeds. Even getting on here was a mission. I am getting speeds of around 0.10 mbps, though my ping seems to vary wildly from around 50 all the way back up to silly numbers.
I attempted to use the bt speed test, but it told me it couldn't get a reading cos my line was too slow!
I did however get one eventually from BT wholesale as below. (it won't let me copy it in?...)
    Download speed (mbps): 0.14
    Upload speed (mbps): 0.35
    Ping Latency (ms): 69.63
    Speedtest.net give the following
Really getting fed up with the unreliable and slow connection. When added to the problems getting a line installed in the first place (it took 3 months!) and problems I have had in the past, I am seriously looking to see what other options I have, but there aren't many good providers that will set us up out here

I currently have the hub connected to the master socket via a filter. I have tried on the main socket and master socket with two different filters and nothing changed...
As for the btspeedtester, I was unable to successfully run that...It just says my connection may be too slow (no kidding!)
Finally, regarding the quiet line test...I don't actually have a phone at the moment. I only wanted broadband as I rarely make phone calls from the house and use my mobile. I am looking to get one for the sole purpose of fixing this issue (and ringing bt to have a whinge at them)
    Thanks,
    Richard

  • Re: Slow Speeds, Please stop us from severing our ...

I currently live in a hamlet approx 3miles from the nearest town and according to Sam Knows.com, approx 4km from the nearest nominated BT Openreach exchange. My current provider Talktalk advise me that it is the length of my line that is the cause of the slow speed, and although fibre will be hitting the exchange in spring 2013, due to me being 4km away will be of no use as BT have chosen to leave copper to the doorstep in place!  My average speed is 0.68mbps (less than 1mb) but as stated in previous posts, I am paying full price as if I was receiving close to 24mbps, and I think this is unacceptable, as it is in nearly all other retail industries so why should ISP's be exempt?? Clearly Talktalk are not to blame, as after all, BT own the lines of most of the UK phones lines, and Talktalk just pay BT.  I have had email correspondance with openreach, and am told it is too expensive for any improvements to be made to the existing line as the population here is so little!  Here I see a multi billion profitable company turning their back on rural britain shame on them.  The old saying, Rome wasn't built in a day, but they got there eventually!  Cutting corners is not the way to go, sewer channels was the way to go according to previous company H20 but that crashed after just 4 years and only served Dundee & Bournemouth, although could of been successful as it is cheaper to lay fibre in that way vs digging up roads.  Sadly, I will soon be cancelling my landline/broadband service as I am fed up of buffering on Video-Audio streaming (even spotify!)
I am led to believe that the goverment are meant to be funding some improvements, but I am sure broadband is bottom of the priority list!

Unfortunately the above posts are true, you allude too BDUK- http://www.culture.gov.uk/what_we_do/telecommunications_and_online/7763.aspx .
These projects are now being ratified (delayed) by the European Commission. http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/5355-are-bduk-projects-really-delayed-by-eu-state-aid-rules.html
You might be interested in this scheme, I assume you reside in Devon http://www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk/ .
    Also this http://www.broadband-notspot.org.uk/map/devon-broadband-notspot.html#8,50.724209,-3.71814,all,2  .
Its hard to recommend other methods of obtaining broadband as you mention Video and buffering, as usage on other methods is no where near as generous as fixed lines, usage is where the meat is!

  • Southern California Fios Slow Speed 7/1/13

Did anybody experience very slow speeds today? My internet was down for like 1-2 hours not so long ago and extremely slow speeds..it just went back up right now... am i the only one who experienced this?Oh and is there a system status page to see the network statuses? Thanks

To answer the last question, the network status page has been gone for ages. Best way to check at this point is phone or live chat with Verizon. The reps are always willing to check for outages if you ask nicely.

    Hi,
Ive had BT Infinity for a couple of months now, and it was absolutely fine, lightning quick, was connecting at roughly 70mb down and 16mb up, 2 months later im barely getting 40mb down and 12 up, and now starting to see packet loss as well. Im a livestreamer which is why I went with infinity in the first place, but streaming to the internet is becoming increasingly impossible.
Ive reset the router several times, disconnected every phone in the house etc, and nothing, still the same issue, and at times Ive seen my connection drop as low as 22mb in spikes.
Here is a tracert to live.twitch.tv which is their servers, but ive also had packet loss to twitter.com, news.sky.com and even google.co.uk at times.

    Hi jr_uk,
I'm sorry to read about your BT Infinity speed issues. Are you connected via ethernet or wireless and if you connect via ethernet do you still experience slower speed issues?
    Thanks
